Chapter 239 - 14-16

Chapter 14

First, let me review what I know about magic. It feels strange that my first real battle was against a magician. To be honest, I'd imagined fighting demons and fallen angels in my head a few times, but I never thought I'd end up facing off against a stray magician.

This world is overflowing with enemies I might actually have to fight.

For now, based on what I know from the original story and the book my master bought me about magic in this world, here are the basics: Magic is a supernatural phenomenon created by humans with great precision to fulfill wishes like "I want to do this" or "I wish that were possible."

Magic apparently reproduces the miracles or supernatural phenomena caused by demons or gods, using unique theories and equations to the greatest extent possible. Every phenomenon follows certain laws, and the power derived from measuring and calculating those laws is what constitutes magic. The "magic circle," a familiar concept from the original work, is supposedly the solution to the calculations needed to create such supernatural phenomena—a unique formula made manifest.

This is confusing stuff.

Some fallen angel leader was researching anti-magic, but all they came up with was "Magic is just overwhelming physical attacks!"—which is completely useless. Actually, in the original work, almost everyone relied on brute force or their own unique abilities to get by. There are too many examples that are useless for ordinary people like me, you power-type characters from the original work.

Well, anyway.

In other words, I was all fired up and ready to go, but in the end, this is how it turned out.

"Hahahaha, what's wrong? It seems your bravado is all talk, boy."

"Shut up! I don't want to hear that from someone who can only use their voice against a helpless kid!"

Damn, not again! I kicked off the ground and threw myself into the next alley. At that moment, an explosion thundered behind me, and part of the wall was charred black. My mouth twisted, and sweat poured down like a waterfall, but I quickly gathered my strength and started running again.

However, no matter how much I ran, there was no sign of reaching the main street. Even when I hid behind something, I was immediately spotted. From this, I concluded that my opponent had cast some kind of magic on me.

I might be able to nullify the effect with my divine artifact, but my partner is my greatest trump card. I can't afford to activate it carelessly. My divine artifact has the effect of "annihilation," so I thought of countermeasures like that high school student who shouts "Such misfortune!" or the lancer wielding the Red Rose Spear that nullifies magic—but I can't do the same as them. First, my divine artifact is influenced by my own power.

After observing the enemy's magic several times, my partner mentally informed me that we could probably nullify a few spells. However, if the power increases or the number of spells rises, I'll be in trouble. It's obvious that the enemy isn't taking this seriously yet.

"Continuing to nullify spells will likely drain my stamina. Stealth is also ineffective when the enemy can see me, and if they realize I have a divine artifact, they might take this seriously."

I can't let the enemy, who still underestimates me as just a child, grow any more cautious. A divine artifact has that much presence. If I'm going to use it, it should be when I can finish them off with one blow or create an opening to escape. Until then, I'll keep the power of the divine artifact hidden as much as possible. I'll only use it sparingly to eliminate impacts or enhance my movement.

A head-on battle is too risky. So, to look for an opening to escape, I ran at full speed, dodging around. Attacking suddenly with the sacred treasure was out of the question—the enemy's strength was too unknown. Above all, time was on my side. After shouting, "I'm coming!" I sprinted at full speed into another alley. I smiled briefly at the enemy's stunned face, but of course, I had no time to spare.

I couldn't let myself be captured and taken to Lavinia. I didn't know if she could handle two stray mages on her own, and I couldn't risk her being forced into a two-on-one fight with me as a liability. So, I planned to keep running, looking for an opening, then escape to the main street to call for help. If I caused a commotion, someone from the association would come to my aid.

However, it seemed that my opponent had seen through my shallow plan. The fact that I couldn't get out of the back alley meant that I was probably trapped by some kind of spell.

"A barrier or a suggestion spell? In this case, a barrier spell to prevent me from leaving is the most likely option. My location is probably being tracked by a detection spell."

If it's detection or suggestion, I can neutralize it by casting "Magic Effect Nullification" on myself.

But a barrier is troublesome. Unless I can touch the barrier directly with my spear, I can't get out of here. I want to head toward the center of the barrier, but it's too dangerous to go straight there with magic lightning falling all around me. Even if I try to hide my presence, I'll have to move based on predictions or they'll notice me.

"Hmm, you're pretty quick. Maybe I should consider adding a tracking function next time."

"...Hey, you hate wasting time, don't you? Instead of chasing me around, why don't you do something more meaningful?"

"Hahahaha, you sound desperate. Of course, I don't plan on spending that much time on this, but I thought this would be a good opportunity to experiment with my magic. Besides, I thought it might be more effective if the hostage was injured to some extent."

"You...!"

He's just playing around. Using his strength against a weaker opponent to feel superior—what kind of person is he? Out of anger, I picked up a stone at my feet and threw it at the magician. The stone, which would have definitely injured him if it had hit, was deflected by a defensive magic array that appeared in front of him. The array's pattern shifted slightly, and lightning struck toward me again.

I quickly rolled to the ground, kicked a nearby box toward the lightning, and managed to neutralize it. Then, sliding my body, I jumped into another alley.

"Attacks are blocked by defensive magic. My partner might be able to dispel the defensive magic, but the opportunity will likely only come once. I don't have the stamina to dispel something imbued with magic multiple times. Plus, once I show the effect of the sacred artifact, they'll probably defend against it with maximum power next time..."

I've dispelled a stray demon's barrier before, so I have a rough idea of how much stamina it takes. If I get close, the enemy will cast lightning magic like before and use defensive magic. In other words, I have to charge through the rain of magic, break through the defensive magic, and defeat that mage. This is way too harsh for a complete novice in combat.

I could use the sacred treasure's effect to hide my form and presence, but I'd still be trapped inside the barrier. The enemy would surely grow suspicious, so I wouldn't be able to hide for long.

"For now, maybe I can somehow avoid detection without the sacred treasure."

I took out the magical tool my master had bought for me from my backpack.

It's a powder in a bag. Made from plants found in the underworld, this powder is said to disrupt magical power and magic in the surrounding area. In other words, it makes it harder for them to detect my location.

I also tried using a communication talisman, but it didn't connect to the outside, so communication is likely being blocked. I made a face like I'd swallowed something bitter, then sprinkled the powder over my head and started running around the alleyways.

Then, the sensation of being watched that I had been feeling earlier seemed to fade. Did it work?

"I see, a tool to block detection. It's surprisingly effective."

I jerked my shoulders and immediately looked up at the sky where the voice had come from. There, a large magic circle had been created, covering the alley. It was probably a spell with a sound amplification effect.

From the irritated tone of his voice, I could tell that my location had become unclear. I realized this was my chance to escape, so I used the divine artifact to erase my presence and magical effects. I immediately began running toward the end of the alley to search for the starting point of the barrier.

There was no doubt that this was my best chance while the opponent hadn't caught me yet. Even if I couldn't find the barrier, I should be able to hide for a while. That's what I was thinking.

Still, somewhere in the back of my mind, I hadn't fully grasped the true power of this stray wizard.

"This is getting tiresome. You're right—wasting any more time here is not a good idea with the Ice Princess and the other members of the association around. Therefore, I will show you a glimpse of the essence of our wizardry."

"What?"

At the same time as his ominous voice reached my ears, the sky above me lit up brightly. From the large magic circle, sparks began to fly, and the moment I saw them, a chill ran through my entire body. The sacred artifact in my hand pulsed repeatedly, warning of danger.

I must not activate it recklessly. But to destroy the magic circle in the sky, I had no choice but to fly there in zero gravity and attack it with all my strength. But up there, even if I could destroy the magic circle, I wouldn't be able to avoid the enemy's attacks.

What should I do? Instinctively, I raised my spear toward the sky and thrust it straight toward the magic circle above me. Of course, since there was no long-range attack, nothing happened. But something inside me told me that this was the only way to stop it. And a few seconds later, I would learn the truth of that instinct the hard way.

"It seems you're trying to escape the barrier, so I'll tell you. The space you're in is like a labyrinth made by connecting alleys, and it's actually not that large. It's a simple barrier, but since you're not a magician, you probably can't find the core of the barrier."

Thanks for the exposition, you bastard! If the alleys are connected, that means it's a subspace barrier. So, if I don't find the core of the barrier, I can't escape from here. Don't mess with me. That means I was as good as trapped the moment this thing spotted me!

"I could search every inch, but finding you with your detection-blocking magic will take some effort. So, how can we make this quick? Simple. Just make the entire area where you are the attack range. You're trapped inside the barrier, after all."

Ah, I see. That's effective. No matter how much I hide my form or presence, the attacks won't miss—I'm still here, after all. The magical power I feel from the magic circle makes my skin crawl, and my teeth chatter instinctively, warning me of danger. I can't escape, and I can't stop it from activating. All I can do is defend myself.

"I focused the power on area coverage rather than concentrated strength, so you should survive. I'll pray to the gods that you don't die. Now, take the full force of my magic on your puny body!"

Amidst the wizard's laughter, I trusted my partner and gripped the sacred weapon tightly. Then, the sky flashed, and purple lightning rained down on the entire alley where I stood.

"Huh, I thought you were just a boy, but it seems my eyes were a little clouded. I never thought you'd come out unscathed from that magic. I underestimated you."

"I'd appreciate it if you kept underestimating me."

"I'm sorry, but I can't do that. I can't let my guard down against someone with that."

"I knew it," I spat out, breathing heavily and clicking my tongue. The eyes peeking out from under the hood were clearly focused on me, and I knew there was no way he would let his guard down now.

Though it was unavoidable to defend myself, I had shown my greatest trump card—my only chance for a comeback—to the enemy.

Against that area magic's purple lightning, my action was simply "magic elimination." However, if I had just swung my spear around randomly, I would likely have been hit. The fact that I could block it without injury was thanks to the enemy's magic having lightning elements. By thrusting my spear toward the sky, it acted as a lightning rod, diverting the thunderbolts away from me. As the magic reached the tip of the divine weapon, I continued to dispel it with all my strength until the attack ceased. I was utterly exhausted, but I was able to stand here unscathed thanks to my partner.

To be honest, the enemy was far too powerful for me. The labyrinthine barrier and everything else had easily surpassed my expectations. What's more, even after unleashing such a wide-ranging spell, he hasn't even broken a sweat.

I've exhausted both my physical and mental strength, but even in this state, my opponent's arrogance has disappeared. He's narrowing his eyes at my exhausted appearance, so he may still be letting his guard down to some degree. Even so, I don't want to imagine facing an opponent of his caliber who has become truly wary of me.

"Hey, you just wanted me as a hostage for Lavinia, didn't you? I'm a weapon bearer, as you can see. That spell was pretty powerful, so there's a chance the others outside noticed. You probably intended to finish me off with that one blow, but I'm not even injured. Even if I just keep defending and hiding like this, I still have a chance to win. If we fight here, there's a high chance we'll be captured by the association."

It's painful that the enemy knows about the weapon, but escaping from this guy is the priority right now.

The person I thought was an ordinary human was hiding an unimaginable weapon. Normally, one would retreat to regroup. I dropped the polite language I had been using out of respect for his age and adopted a bold tone. Even if it's just bravado, I have to make him think that fighting me here is disadvantageous. My physical and mental strength are nearing their limits. Even though I had only been running around, this first real battle had left me exhausted.

My mental strength was especially depleted; I was barely standing on willpower alone. So I desperately tried to suppress the urge to say, "Just go home already!"

However, this world was not kind to mob characters.

"You have a point. But my goal has changed at this moment. Your sacred treasure looks quite interesting. I think it would be more meaningful to give up the fight against the Ice Princess and take you with me. I'd like to study that power and gain a glimpse of new magic!"

"What?! Hey, if you give up the fight, what about your comrades? You took hostages for this!"

"Comrades? Yeah, we were allies. But that's all. I'm here for myself, to gain the mysteries of magic and pursue the path of a wizard! This was just a warm-up for that, and a warning to the association that expelled someone with my potential. So if you think of it as a stepping stone for me to gain a glimpse of new power, then my comrades' lives won't have been wasted."

"You're insane."

I can't understand him. This isn't a matter of discussion. His way of thinking is so alien that it feels like I'm talking to an extraterrestrial from another planet. He really only cares about himself.

He doesn't care about others' feelings at all—he doesn't even consider them. He tried to take me hostage, use me as research material, and abandon his comrades without a second thought. To him, everyone around him is just a tool. If I fall into his hands, I'll lose myself. He'll probably start messing with my mind. He won't care about human rights or emotions at all. Maybe he'll brainwash me and make me fight against Lavinia.

Because of me, research might be carried out that involves hurting ordinary people like my family and Kei-san. Once the research is complete, I might be killed or sold somewhere.

No, I don't want that.

"Well, shall we go together?"

A sticky gaze sends shivers running through my body. The emotion that had been dominating me until a moment ago was not anger, but fear. It was like encountering an unknown creature. I never knew that not understanding something could be so terrifying.

In this world, I now understood, at least in part, the thoughts of those who feared and sought to eliminate children with sacred artifacts and powerful abilities. I still think what they did was terrible, but I now strongly understand their rejection of something they couldn't comprehend.

Seeing that I was paralyzed with fear, the stray wizard spread a magic circle in front of me and fired purple lightning at me again. I reflexively thrust my right hand forward with the spear and canceled out the magic that flew toward me.

"Hmm, it seems you are canceling out magic. Does that mean that if the tip of that spear hits something, it will cause it to disappear?"

Muttering to himself, he released a spell that was many times more powerful than the purple lightning from before. Once again, I could only thrust the tip of the divine weapon forward, and the magic and spear collided. The residual force from the collision that couldn't be completely neutralized blew my body backward, slamming me violently into the wall. The pain running through my body from the impact, the burns from the magic that hadn't completely vanished, and the agony from both left me gasping for breath.

"I see, so there's a limit to how much power can be used for elimination. Can only magic be destroyed, or can other substances be eliminated as well? Hahahaha, the tools created by the gods are amazing! I never expected this to be so fascinating!"

"Who the hell are you, some kind of researcher?" I muttered sarcastically, but despite the shock of being blown away, my body, which had been immobilized moments ago, could now move again. It might have been a form of physical shock therapy. I certainly don't want to experience that again.

"Ow!"

I have to escape somehow. I tried to move my right foot, but a sharp pain shot through it, and I couldn't stand up. I cautiously turned my gaze and saw blood flowing from my right foot, which was bent in an odd direction. The sight filled me with despair. I couldn't escape like this. The impact from the previous blow had broken it. There was no way a human child's body could withstand that.

This is definitely a desperate situation. Even if I can move a little, my body is still trembling. His magic is too powerful, and even if I try to get closer, I won't be able to withstand being hit by that spell multiple times. Plus, even if I get close, his defensive magic will stop me. Once he realizes there's a limit to my elimination ability, he'll definitely cast his strongest magical barrier to block me.

Even if I try to escape, I can't run with this leg. The enemy will also take measures to prevent me from escaping. If I disappear, they might cast that area-of-effect magic again. If that happens, I have no way to block it twice. The core of the barrier hasn't even been found yet.

I want to wait for Lavinia and the association's help, but will they arrive in time? He probably knows the situation better than I do. How long do I have to hold on? How much longer do I have to endure before help arrives? In the first place, will help really come for me?

If help doesn't arrive in time, will I just become this guy's toy?

"I can't let that happen."

The words slipped out unconsciously, strengthening my grip on the sacred treasure. Yes, that's right. I absolutely refuse to accept such a future. I haven't accomplished anything yet. I haven't left anything behind. I don't want to die. Above all, I don't want to give up here.

If help doesn't come, is it over? No, that's not right. Even if help doesn't come, it can't be the end! Keep fighting until the end! Face it head-on! Don't give up here! Isn't that what you promised her?!

If you hate that future, if you don't want your precious things trampled on, if there's something you want to protect, then you have to win it with your own hands!

Gah! I thrust the sacred artifact into the ground to support my collapsing body and stood up, using it as a crutch. My battered body screamed in pain. The sensation in my right leg was almost gone. Fear still lurked within me. But a stronger determination drove me forward.

Even in this state, my mind felt strangely clear. A powerful, hot rush of energy was flowing through my body. My clear mind began to greedily search for a way to survive.

The difference in strength—desperate. I couldn't win if I fought head-on. Then I wouldn't fight a fair fight. I didn't need to stay on the same level as my opponent. I would just drag him down to my level.

The state of my injuries—desperate. I can't move a single step properly. My right leg is especially bad, and even walking is difficult. But so what? I still have my hands. I still have my left leg. My limbs aren't severed. Above all, I'm still alive. And there was one method I could think of. A chance for a comeback. Then I'll use my injuries to my advantage. I'll endure any pain.

"Huh, I'm surprised. You're still standing? You're tougher than I thought. But with those injuries, there's nothing you can do. If you agree to my plan, I'll stop hurting you. Swear to become my ally right here and now."

"Who would swear to that? It's worthless."

"But then what will you do? You can't do anything with those injuries. You're like a foolish child. You have no choice but to rely on me."

"Rely on you? No way. I have someone I trust more than anyone else always by my side. That person has seen all my weaknesses, my foolishness, and even the times I've had to bow my head and beg for mercy. Yet, they still refuse to abandon me and are willing to fight alongside me until the very end. That's why all I can do is keep pushing forward and do my best."

The wizard raised an eyebrow at my words.

I laughed it off, pulled the red spear out of the ground, and propped my right foot on nearby debris. Come on, partner. My legs are shaking with fear, but I believe in your strength more than anyone else. So show me your power. Let's show them the true strength of us cowards who refuse to give up.

"Hey... you said something earlier. You said I couldn't do anything anymore. But too bad. There's one thing I can do to get back at you."

"What?"

"Your goal is my sacred treasure. But you know, sacred treasures disappear along with their hosts unless a special method is used. You know that, right?"

He must be trying to figure out what I'm planning and what I'm trying to say. You think you know the full extent of my sacred treasure's power, but unfortunately, that's not all. There's one more ace up my sleeve that I've kept hidden from you until now. He doesn't know about it, so he'll definitely fall for it. This is my last and only chance.

"Also, Lavinia was hoping I'd be safe. If she finds out I died because of you, she might feel responsible and come after you relentlessly."

"What are you trying to say?"

"Don't you get it? If I die here now, you're finished."

Master, am I smiling right now? Looking at his expression, it seems my face is doing its job properly. My master told me to keep a poker face so the enemy wouldn't guess my intentions, but I guess I'm not good at keeping a straight face. Well, then, I'll just smile. If I'm going to laugh, I'll do it well.

I pointed the tip of the red spear in my right hand toward myself. Finally realizing my true intentions, the wizard showed a look of panic for the first time and tried to activate a magic circle. But it's too late. With a resolute expression, I thrust the sacred weapon into my own abdomen with all my strength.

The sensation of piercing flesh. Ah, damn, it hurts. My thoughts flicker like a dying light. But I won't let my consciousness fade. I have to do this to outsmart him. So please, partner. I trust you more than that scum or any help that might come from nowhere.

And I sank into the pool of blood.

Chapter 15

Thud.

The small boy's body sank into the pool of blood. The moment he drove the sacred artifact into his own abdomen, the crimson weapon vanished from the rogue wizard's sight as if it had never existed. The disappearance of the sacred artifact was proof of its host's death.

The child lay face-down, motionless. The rogue wizard was consumed by such rage that he canceled the magic circle he'd been forming mid-cast and slammed his fist into the wall with all his strength.

His heart was nearly shattered. Every subject he'd experimented on had begged for their lives, clinging to him in the face of his overwhelming power. That's why he had driven this boy to the brink and brutally crushed his spirit. Yet he never imagined that the very thing that had fascinated him so deeply would vanish before his eyes in an instant.

He had underestimated the boy. Indeed, it was an effective act of revenge. His nerves were frayed to the breaking point. That act of suicide had rendered all their time together meaningless. Unable to process the torrent of emotions surging within him, he struck the wall again, despite knowing it would only bruise his knuckles. His teeth ground together with a sharp, grating sound.

Still, what was done was done. Above all, he couldn't remain here any longer. The survival signal he'd been transmitting to his comrades had cut out a short while ago—they must have been killed or captured. He had led them away from the main battlefield, but he didn't know when the "Ice Princess" might appear here. And most critically, as the boy had predicted, he had led the child to a gruesome death and would now face the ice maiden's wrath.

From now on, he had to move with extreme caution.

In the end, everything had been turned upside down. He glared at the boy's lifeless body as if to blame him for this outcome, then stepped forward heavily. He knew he needed to escape immediately, but the anger that wouldn't subside drove him onward. It was because of a despicable impulse—he wanted to use the boy's corpse as experimental material even in death, to humiliate him further.

He crouched near the boy's body, concentrating on casting a teleportation spell to carry him away, but just then—

Shlunk!

A red spear pierced straight through the rogue wizard's abdomen.

"What the—!"

He felt a sudden shock of piercing pain in his gut, followed by a searing agony like fire, then the sensation of something vital rapidly draining away. Before he could even think to cast an attack spell to dispel the weapon, the boy's blood-soaked body sprang up with startling force, yanked the spear free from his abdomen, and leaped backward. The crimson spear was now slick with the wizard's blood, and though the boy grimaced at the sight, he still aimed the weapon's tip directly at his enemy with clear hostility.

What in the world was happening? Why was this boy still alive? Along with shock and pain, he felt unease, confusion, and a creeping hint of fear. Ironically, both of them shared the same dread of something they couldn't comprehend.

"...I didn't have the courage to erase a person from existence. But I did have the courage to point a weapon at someone for my own sake. That's good enough for now, right, partner?"

"You bastard, how...? Why are your right leg and abdomen completely intact?!"

"...Sorry, but I don't have the luxury of explaining it to you dramatically."

The boy shrugged and forced a faint smile. However, as he'd said, his complexion was deathly pale, and cold sweat trickled down his cheeks. But the wizard was in no better condition.

Still, he couldn't believe that the injuries to the boy's right leg—the fracture—and the wound that should have been pierced through his abdomen had completely healed. It was as if the injuries had never existed in the first place, utterly erased.

When his thoughts reached that conclusion, the man's eyes widened in disbelief at the realization that had just struck him.

"Could it be that this sacred artifact affects not just physical matter, butconceptsthemselves?!"

"...That's why dealing with smart people is so exhausting."

The wizard's near-certain declaration made the boy's lips twitch in annoyance. Yes, the boy—Kuraimoto Sota—had done something simple yet decisive. He had erased the wounds he'd sustained in battle.

The conversation and the spear in his abdomen had all been an elaborate performance to make the wizard believe he had committed suicide. Then, while feigning death by using the sacred artifact to silence his heartbeat, he had shrunk the weapon to palm-size, erased the wounds on his abdomen and right leg, and when his opponent approached carelessly, restored the spear to full size and struck.

If the wizard had simply fled without approaching Sota, that would have been acceptable. The fact remained that he had achieved his revenge, and the wizard would believe him dead. He had planned to escape immediately afterward.

If his opponent had tried to destroy the corpse with magic, Sota would have used the sacred artifact to erase his appearance and presence at the crucial moment, then escaped and hidden until the wizard lifted the barrier. However, his opponent was such a vile creature that he even sought to defile Sota's corpse. Therefore, all hesitation within him vanished, and he could now harbor pure hostility toward the wizard.

Of course, Sota's own exhaustion had reached the point where he could collapse at any moment, but the divine weapon was supporting him to its absolute limit in response to his resolve. The pseudo-healing technique was extremely taxing. Despite that, he had managed to pull it off at the last second and was standing here now. By entrusting everything to the divine weapon and exploiting his enemy's carelessness, he had grasped a sliver of hope—just enough to keep his body moving a little longer.

"Damn it! Why won't my magic work properly?! My body won't move..."

"...I didn't have the resolve to eliminate you completely. But I did eliminate something else. I erased the magical power within your body. It was too dangerous to leave intact. Oh, and I took a bit of your stamina too."

"What—?!"

The fact that he had just erased his own wounds right before the wizard's eyes gave his words undeniable weight. Though he had only managed to make contact for an instant, so the effect might only last a short while—Sota thought to himself, but there was no need to tell the man that. Besides, that was more than enough time for what he needed to do.

For someone who had been drunk on overwhelming magical power, having that ability stripped away was devastating. That fact alone was more than sufficient to shatter the very foundation of what it meant to be a mage. The light faded from his eyes, and he muttered "It's a lie..." as if in delirium. Sota watched the man's expression calmly, then slowly took a step forward.

By the time the mage noticed Sota approaching, the distance between them had nearly vanished. The man tried to back away, but a sudden sensation of weightlessness threw him off balance, and he found himself trapped in a small pit. The boy had stabbed the sacred weapon into the ground where the man stood, creating a depression. With nowhere to flee and no strength remaining, the man's face turned ashen with despair, and tears streamed down his cheeks.

"...Unlike you, I don't enjoy hurting people. But I can't forgive what you tried to do. So this is the end."

The protagonist, Hyoudou Issei, had said something similar. It was his solution when anger couldn't be contained any other way. Sota agreed with that approach this time. It was simple, but it was the most direct way to confront someone with your true feelings.

"Just take this one punch!"

With a resoundingthwack, Sota, empowered by the sacred artifact's effects, struck the man's cheek with all his might—his first real punch in his entire life.

"...Did I go too far? No, but this much should be okay, right?"

I looked down at the wizard before me, his face a mess of tears and snot. He had fainted the moment my fist connected. Even though I'd given it everything I had, the fact that a child's punch could knock him unconscious must have been shocking, considering how much of his magical power had been drained. If my partner were gone, I wouldn't be able to stay composed either.

Another problem was the wound in this man's abdomen. If I left it untreated, he would die. I didn't want to become a murderer, so I needed to contact the Mages' Guild somehow. However, I was already at my absolute limit. After fashioning a makeshift bandage for the unconscious man's abdomen using his own clothes, I leaned against the wall and couldn't move another muscle. Honestly, I was surprised I'd managed to do even that much.

I had been desperate and acting on pure instinct, but I could tell my partner was doing everything it could. When I suddenly thought of "erasing the wound," my partner had hesitated, knowing how difficult it would be. It wasn't impossible, but the chances of success were fifty-fifty at best. Still, I'd had no choice but to take that gamble. I really don't want to fight like this again. I truly want to live a peaceful life, working hard in my own way... But at the same time, I also want to become stronger.

Still, it's incredible that I managed to develop a pseudo-healing technique, even under these circumstances. In the original story, I believe Rias's divine artifact, which possessed healing properties, was also considered extremely rare. Even in contracts between devils and mages, countless applicants would gather hoping to receive the blessing of healing. Mine is an unconventional method that simply erases wounds I've already received. Of course, I haven't recovered the lost stamina or blood, so I'm currently collapsed from anemia and exhaustion. But the ability to erase what exists is truly reassuring.

"Ugh, I really wish someone would come help me soon. It'll be seriously bad if this guy wakes up."

"He won't be getting up anytime soon. What you did caused significant psychological damage."

Huh? That's strange. It's a very deep voice, clearly from a third party.Tap, tap—the footsteps that seem to respond to my words make me turn my head. Emerging from the alley with measured steps is another hooded figure. This one is taller than the previous one, and a terrible feeling swirls in my gut. If it turns out a new enemy has appeared at this point, I think I'd be willing to pick a fight with God himself. Even though God doesn't exist.

"By the way, may I ask which faction you belong to?"

"Well, I'm not in the best mood right now, but I'm one of his comrades."

"You've got to be kidding me! What the hell do you want from me?! This is supposed to be the part where my allies show up to save me, isn't it?! Ugh,cough!"

"You don't have the strength to throw a tantrum."

"...Thanks to you people. Could you please take that guy away and let me go?"

"..."

Ah, I knew that wouldn't work. I see. It seems this guy witnessed our earlier fight, and I don't know why he didn't come to help his comrade, but these people clearly don't have any sense of loyalty to each other. Plus, I showed him my "pseudo-healing technique" and "magical power drain" earlier. If I were in their position, I'd either try to eliminate me because I'm dangerous, or brainwash me and drag me back to base. My abilities would definitely seem appealing to someone harboring hostility toward the Mages' Guild.

Damn it. I worked so hard. I gave it everything I had, and this is the result? I bit my lip and couldn't stop the tears from streaming down my face. Before fighting the first wizard, I had considered the possibility of his allies intervening.

And that's exactly what happened. I've truly exhausted every last ounce of strength I possess. I have no power left to resist. The towering wizard, magic circle aimed at me, began walking toward me cautiously. Too bad for him, though—I'm completely drained, so his caution is pointless. Even moving a single finger feels like an insurmountable task. Still, I gripped my partner in my right hand as tightly as I could, at least to show some defiance.

Out of fear, I squeezed my eyes shut.

As the wizard approached, I suddenly felt a cold breeze brush against my skin. It was cold, yet somehow carried a gentle warmth. What was that? I slowly opened my eyes and saw the tall wizard sweating profusely as he looked behind him. Following his gaze, I saw her.

"Because of my poor judgment, I've dragged an innocent person like Sota-kun into this mess. I won't let you hurt him any further."

"As expected of the 'Ice Princess.' Have you taken care of all our comrades?"

"Yes, I've frozen them all. Now it's just you."

There stood a girl with beautiful golden hair and sapphire eyes, as lovely as a fairy. However, her expression was completely different from when I first met her. Her eyes burned with piercing hostility. Cold air swirled around her, and an icy wind brushed against my cheek. A pale blue radiance emanated from her form, making her appear fantastically beautiful.

"...Partner?"

In response to the girl—Lavinia's—frigid aura, my sacred artifact pulsed in reaction, emitting a faint crimson glow. What was happening? This cold wasn't caused by magic, was it? Gradually, the chill began to envelop the entire area around us. I noticed my breath had turned white. In other words, the temperature in this whole district was definitely dropping. The one causing this impossible phenomenon, standing at its very center, was Lavinia.

"Lavinia"—I had assumed that name was simply her magical alias. But if that was a misunderstanding, there was only one other sacred artifact with a similar name that I knew from the original work. However, since the details hadn't been revealed in the source material yet, I had dismissed that possibility. But as the frigid air surrounding her intensified, that possibility began to take concrete shape, however faintly.

Lavinia's sapphire eyes had turned dark, like the abyssal depths of the ocean. She exhaled white mist while spreading her arms and beginning to chant something. It was a sorrowful, lonely, and mystical incantation. For some reason, it seemed to embed itself in my ears. Was this it? Was this—that?

"—Awaken from your eternal slumber. And grant eternal rest to these fools—"

Cold air swirled around her like a living entity. I was completely overwhelmed by the sight. An aura of unimaginable power emanated from Lavinia, growing stronger alongside the arctic winds. Then, something began to take shape near her. Was ice moving of its own accord, forming something? My questions went unanswered as the ice continued to transform.

First hands formed, then legs, a torso, and finally a head. If you looked only at the process, it might resemble a robot, but it felt more like an elegant doll. It towered above the alley walls, probably around three meters tall. The ice figure wore a dress befitting a princess, which made sense if that was the origin of the "Ice Princess" moniker. However, there was so much more to this Ice Princess.

The doll possessed an awe-inspiring beauty rather than Lavinia's mortal loveliness. The left half of its face bore six glowing eyes, while the right half was covered in thorns. It had four slender arms, though its hands were unnaturally large. Despite its unbalanced proportions, there was an eerie, mesmerizing beauty that made it impossible to look away.

"...Is this one of the Thirteen?"

Transfixed, I snapped back to reality at the voice of the wizard nearby. When I glanced over, the man's face was pale even beneath his hood. That was only natural, though. Their downfall was underestimating her power. Being shown such a thing and having it turn on you as an enemy—feeling fear was only human. If this Ice Princess was what I thought it was...

"..."

As Lavinia's chant concluded, a massive sphere of energy materialized. The Ice Princess fixed her six eyes upon her target, unleashing a bone-deep cold that froze the man's movements entirely. A terrifying yet beautiful power that froze everything in its path and granted it eternal slumber. That was the power she had been born with—her lifelong companion.

Yes, Lavinia was the wielder of one of the Thirteen Longinus. An existence feared by all factions, said to be capable of even slaying gods—she was the possessor of such a being.

Chapter 16

"Is that really okay, Lavinia-chan? You possess a God-Destroying Weapon and have talent as a magician. That's precisely why it's important to observe your surroundings more carefully and respond appropriately to each situation."

"Yes..."

"I understand your regret, anger, and guilt over the child you tried to protect ending up in danger. But using your magic to freeze everything around you—even in such a narrow alley, twice, and at a level that could have been handled with magic alone—isn't that a bit excessive?"

"You're right..."

Um, could you please stop? Lavinia is starting to cry and tremble. Watching her makes me feel guilty and heartbroken. But what you're saying is correct, and since you're the one lecturing her, I can only hang my head in defeat. I'm sorry, Lavinia, my benefactor. I can't seem to help you.

"Well, you seem to be fine now. Even though you were healed by magic, I think young people have incredible resilience."

"Ah, um, yes! Thank you so much for treating me and helping me!"

"Haha, no need to be so formal. Children should be full of energy. Besides, I'm the one who dragged you into this mess. I should be the one apologizing."

"No, it's not like that... I was the one who first approached Lavinia while she was working, and she tried her best to protect me. So I have no hard feelings toward her or the association. The real culprits are those stray wizards. I got what I deserved, so I'm not holding a grudge."

That's how I really feel. Of course, I can't say I don't wish they had handled those rogue mages better, but that was just an accident—bad luck, nothing more. Above all, in the end, heaven was on my side. Maybe my luck just ran out for a moment there.

Besides, even though I was caught up in that battle, I think it would have been dismissed as a common occurrence in the underworld. In other words, my own lack of foresight was also a contributing factor. I'm truly pathetic, with so many shortcomings. This incident made me realize that painfully.

More than that, if I condemn the association, Lavinia will be sad. She saved my life, and she's the cutest girl I know. At least, she definitely suits that dreamy smile she had when I first met her. I want to hold onto that pride as a man and not let it be clouded.

"Hmm, that's very kind of you, but I feel bad about that... Well then, I'll give you a pass to 'The Gray Magician.' If you ever need anything, feel free to come by. I'll do my best to help you within my capabilities."

"Wait, I can't accept something so grand! Besides, 'within your capabilities' means asking the association's chairman, which is far too much for me to request..."

"Hmm, I can see why Lavinia said you're a good kid. I don't like being asked to do things, but if it's something like sending a dragon after someone I don't like, I'll do it."

He laughs and casually says something terrifying. It's probably his way of joking, but knowing about his demonic followers, I can only manage a strained smile. The fact that he could actually do it if he wanted to is genuinely unsettling.

I never expected to meet a character from the original work in such a way. And to make it even more unexpected, my first encounter was with one of the oldest demons, the chairman of the "Gray Magician" association. He was sitting in a luxurious chair reserved for the chairman—a middle-aged man with a slightly intimidating face and an air of mystery. However, once he started talking, he was surprisingly lighthearted. His tone was very casual. There was only one person who could pull off such a gap.

And there he was—Mephisto Pheles himself, the demon with red and blue hair and odd-colored eyes. Honestly, how did someone like me, an ordinary person, end up knowing such an incredible being? I think I understand the circumstances, but my mind can't keep up. I've met someone I never thought I'd be able to meet so casually!

"Um, Shou-kun. I'm really sorry. If I had been more careful back then, this wouldn't have happened..."

"Um, Lavinia-san. I already told you, I'm not blaming you. You helped me, and I was really grateful. Besides, you're about the same age as me, so it's only natural to make mistakes. I'm fine now, so don't worry about it. You already apologized."

"But..."

"Lavinia-chan, if you worry too much, Shou-kun will be troubled too. Anyway, Lavinia-chan, you should first be careful about being called 'that' in your current situation."

"Ugh..."

The Indiscriminate Ice Princess is real? Also, I didn't expect the oldest demon to call me by my first name. Still, watching these two, they seem like a strict father and a troublesome daughter. The age difference must be well over ten thousand years.

Lavinia is the owner of one of the God-Slaying Weapons, and she's actually Mephisto Pheles's favorite disciple. Come to think of it, there was a mention in the original story that one of the God-Slaying Weapons was held by the Mages' Guild. She must be the one. And with how cute she is, it makes sense. I've only read up to volume 20, but she's probably one of the heroines who appears after volume 20, alongside the protagonist. I really want to be the first to take down that lecherous breast dragon emperor.

After she froze the stray mages with her God-Slaying Weapon, they were all captured. I lost consciousness from the tension, so I don't know the details. When I came to, I found myself on a luxurious sofa, and the first thing I saw was Mephisto Pheles lecturing Lavinia. I can roughly guess my current situation, but what an odd experience.

She probably tried to carry me to a safe place after I fainted. The safe place she chose just happened to be the principal's office. Lavinia... even so, letting an outsider like me into the top-tier room was probably a bad idea. The principal who gave permission was also questionable.

In the end, this trip has led me to meet the owner of a God-Destroying Weapon and the oldest demon. What a ridiculous trip this has become. My master probably never imagined that I would get caught up in a wizard's battle and end up being taken care of by the leader of the "Gray Wizards"...

Oh, I almost forgot about my master.

"It's okay. I heard about your master from this child. I've explained everything to him and told him that we'll send you back to Japan later."

"Oh, thank you. By the way, my master..."

"I haven't told him much. I only told him that I took you in because you got caught up in this incident. I didn't tell him that you defeated one of the stray magicians or that you have a sacred artifact. But he was very worried about you. He's a good master. Take good care of him."

"Ugh... Yes. Thank you very much."

I could only bow my head. His smiling words reassured me, but at the same time, I felt overwhelmed with guilt. They had taken care of everything for me. To be honest, they knew about the sacred treasure, but I felt secure knowing that they would be fine. Lavinia is admired for her character, and Mephisto for his knowledge from the original story. He is one of the few demons who doesn't place much value on his pieces. He has no interest in rating games and rarely involves himself in underworld politics.

I think his piece was Tannin, the "Queen." He was once a Dragon King, and his strength is recognized even in the original work. He was a serious, responsible, and capable dragon. And he was one of the unfortunate dragons affected by the protagonist's "milk power," making him the third of the "pitiful dragons." I remember that unnecessary incident well. I don't know any other council members' familiars, but in his case, it wouldn't be surprising if the Queen were his only familiar. I'm curious, but it's not the kind of thing I can just ask.

"Speaking of which, Lavinia-chan. Could you check the condition of the magic array we're using to send Shou-kun back to Japan? It's been a while since we've used teleportation magic to Japan."

"Understood. I'll take care of it. Shou-kun, please wait here."

"Alright, thank you. But there's no need to rush."

Perhaps because she had just been scolded, she straightened her back and left the council chairman's office. I wonder if she'll be okay. I hope she doesn't trip or something. I felt a little anxious, but she's a skilled magician and the bearer of a divine weapon. I'm sure she'll be fine, but why do I feel so uneasy? Maybe it's because of her natural innocence.

"She's a good girl, isn't she, Lavinia-chan?"

"Eh, yes. I think so too. She helped me, and she's cute, but she's a little clumsy."

"Yeah, that's right. You really see her for who she is."

"Huh?"

At the chairman's words, I shifted my gaze from the door she had left through to him. Leaning on his elbow at his desk, Mephisto was smiling ambiguously.

"Lavinia is the owner of a God-Slaying Weapon. Despite her young age, she possesses the power to kill even gods. At her age in this organization, it's hard to make friends. Plus, there are only eccentric people in this association, so her conversations naturally revolve around magic. Until she reached that age, I couldn't let her do anything childlike."

"Mephisto Pheles..."

"You're the only child who wasn't afraid of Lavinia even after seeing her God-Destroying Weapon with your own eyes. Maybe it's because you were also a divine weapon owner, but you always treated her normally, as if it were natural. Until you woke up, she looked lonely, as if she was afraid you would reject her."

"..."

Despite his light tone, it was clear that Mephisto truly cared about Lavinia. He sees her as a person, not just as a tool. That's why she didn't succumb to power like the other God-Destroying Tool wielders who joined terrorist organizations. She didn't become a tool like Valerie, the half-vampire who possessed the God-Destroying Tool. The fact that she was able to live here honestly until the original story is undoubtedly thanks to this person as well.

I don't think she's scary. The power of the God-Destroying Tool was both beautiful and terrifying. Still, Lavinia is Lavinia. Thanks to my knowledge of the original story, I have a better understanding of the divine weapons than others. I can see this world objectively from a third-person perspective.

"I'm sorry for bringing my personal matters into this. Once again, I apologize for involving you in our affairs. Please accept this apology on behalf of our organization."

"...Eh, yes. Yes, I accept it. I'm sorry for all the trouble."

I don't know how to respond in situations like this. I thought I was going to die after getting involved, but my anger has subsided. For now, they showed me sincerity even though I'm just a kid, so I think it's fine. I know my indifference is questionable, but that's how I honestly feel.

"Right, and about your divine weapon—it seems to have some interesting effects. So, if you're interested, would you like to get involved with us?"

"Involved?"

"Yes, you want to be an information broker, right? If so, why don't you become our exclusive agent? Being freelance isn't bad, but we can provide you with various kinds of support."

"Is that because my sacred treasure is dangerous if left unattended?"

He asked with a smile, his tone as light as before. It felt like he didn't care either way if I accepted or declined. Still, I couldn't help but unconsciously ponder the true intent behind his words. Why was I, who wasn't a magician, being invited to join an organization—not as a servant of the devil, but as a member?

I vaguely understood that he was a demon who supported Sirzechs and helped the protagonists, but I still didn't know anything about him personally. I don't know if he's really as lighthearted as he seems, or if he's calculating gains and losses in his head.

I know I shouldn't let my knowledge of the original work sway me. So, I decided to prioritize myself and talk to him honestly. To be frank, I'm not strong, and unfortunately, I don't think I have any outstanding abilities. Even if this was an apology, there's no need for the organization to go out of their way to take care of me. The result of that thought was the danger of my sacred treasure.

My divine weapon's attack power is probably on par with an average divine weapon. Its power to annihilate is incredible, but it also has numerous cheat-level abilities. However, the power of this spear cannot be measured by strength alone. The battle with that stray mage was proof of that. Normally, there's no way I could have defeated that mage, even if I stood on my head. That's how great the difference in power was.

But I managed to win by sheer luck. The enemy was also extremely careless, but even so, depending on how you think about it, there's a possibility of defeating a superior opponent. Above all, the "Magic Power Annihilation" I used this time—if I had taken the time to stab him with the spear, I might have truly annihilated the magic power he possessed. I have the power to erase a mage's entire life. From the perspective of the Mage's Guild, it's extremely dangerous, and it's only natural to want to keep such a power under control rather than release it into the wild.

"Shou-kun, you're perceptive. Yeah, your thinking isn't wrong. Depending on how it's used, that sacred artifact could be quite frightening if it falls into the hands of another faction."

"What, that bad?"

"The fact that you're not aware of it is what scares me the most. Sure, with your current power, there's only so much you can do. But the future is uncertain. Someone might discover terrifying applications that you never even imagined for your sacred artifact. And it's a troublesome thing that you wouldn't be able to deny."

His mysterious red and blue eyes were fixed on me. He wasn't threatening me; he was just stating the facts. I'm always amazed by the versatility of sacred artifacts, and I do think there are many elements that could be misused. But I think Mephisto is telling me that my sense of crisis isn't enough.

"Yeah, well, let's say, for example. If your sacred treasure can erase the concept of magical power, then maybe it can erase emotions too, right?"

"...I think so."

"Yeah, yeah, so let's say there's someone who wants Lavinia's power. But she's not the kind of person who would misuse the power of a divine weapon. So, the person would think, 'Let's erase any sense of good and evil from her mind.'"

"Eh...?"

"And then, she would lose her emotions and her heart, and transform from a beautiful girl into a deadly killing machine. ...Do you feel a sense of crisis now?"

...Ah, this person is a devil at heart. He's a good person, but he's still devilish. It's incredibly effective, damn it. So, if I wanted to, I could do something like that too. I never even considered it before. No, I've erased someone's memories before. I might even be able to brainwash someone. I realized that his analogy was not just a fairy tale.

"Are you sure you want me to tell you about such cases? You could misuse that knowledge."

"The reason I interact with humans at the Magic Association is because I'm endlessly fascinated by their potential. Humans have unique ideas and a strong determination born from their short lives. If you're serious about it, you'll figure it out on your own eventually, even without hearing such examples."

"…Mephisto Pheles, you like humans, don't you?"

"Hmm, maybe. But it's not just humans. I believe every species has its own potential. Living a long life, one can't help but be drawn to the power of youth."

Sitting elegantly in his chair, he squinted his eyes as if dazzled by light. I listened to Mephisto's words and slowly sorted them out in my mind. I think he was probably saying that with me in mind. He probably has his own thoughts as the leader of the organization, but I think that's the root of it.

He could have drawn me in more skillfully. He could have charmed me into compliance without leaving me so confused. I don't want to misuse the power of this sacred artifact, nor do I want anyone else to. And I'm sure he wouldn't bind me here against my will. He truly intends to be my protector. With the oldest demon as my backer, no one would dare lay a finger on me.

I'm sure Lavinia has been protected from other organizations in the same way.

To be honest, I can't accept being treated the same as her, a god-slayer, but is that okay with him? With my limited understanding, I can't see the big picture. ...Then I'll stop overthinking it. It's my life. What's important is whether I can do what I want to do.

"Mephisto Pheles, if I become involved with this place, what restrictions will be placed on my actions?"

"Basically, you can do whatever you want. As long as you don't oppose other factions, I don't care. Tannin-kun—oh, he's one of my dragon familiars. He's dedicated to protecting dragons in the underworld. You should prioritize doing what you want to do, just like him."

"Does that benefit you, Mephisto Pheles-sama? Demons are supposed to operate on a quid pro quo basis, right?"

"Well, you could help me with my work occasionally, like Lavinia does. As I mentioned earlier, your abilities seem versatile. Also, I'd like priority access to information about rogue mages. Oh, and please avoid handling any information that could be detrimental to us. How does that sound?"

I pondered his conditions repeatedly. To be honest, it was a golden opportunity. It's so good that I want to ask if there's really such a thing. There are dangers in belonging to an organization, but the same is true for going solo. If you make allies, you also make enemies.

He didn't mention much about the three major powers, so I guess he's leaving that up to me. Demons value contracts, so I don't think what he told me is a lie. I've always been worried about my family's safety, but I think he can take care of that with ease.

Joining the mage side is completely new information for me, so my previous knowledge won't be of much use. In other words, I'll have to build everything from scratch. But then again, isn't that just part of life?

"Is there anything else you'd like to ask me?"

"What is it?"

"Well, regardless of whether I join or not, would it be okay for me to become friends with Lavinia? I don't think I can talk about magic, which she seems to like. But I'd like to talk about anime, games, go out and play, or just relax at home and chat about nothing in particular. I'd also like to learn about the magic she likes and talk more about sacred artifacts. It might be weird, but... would it be okay for us to be friends?"

Maybe I should ask her guardian first. But Mephisto-sama showed an expression other than a smile for the first time in response to my question. He blinked in surprise, then burst into laughter. It wasn't the calm, gentle smile he had been wearing earlier, but a warm smile that seemed to convey genuine kindness.

Ah, maybe. The main reason he wanted to protect me was...

"Hahaha, that depends on your efforts, Shou-kun. I'll support you in that regard. By the way, that girl has a few quirks, so be careful. And if you ever try to do anything inappropriate with Lavinia-chan, then—"

"Don't worry. What I want to build is a fun and pure friendship! Long live friendship!"

No way, I swear the last expression from Lord Mephisto wasn't a smile.

"I'm ready! The teleportation array to Japan should be operational without any issues."

"Perfect timing. Shou-kun, you should head back to Japan for now. You're probably still tired, and it's better to be in a familiar place. Plus, it might get too late if you stay out too long."

"Um, yes. Thank you for your concern. You've done so much for me..."

"It's fine. Also, if you show this to them, I'll make sure they let you through. ...Well then, I'll be waiting for your reply."

What he handed me was a card-like object with a mysterious magic array drawn on it, with a gradient of red and blue mixed with purple. He told me that it was the symbol of Mephisto Pheles. Huh, so that's what it is. I wonder if I've just been given something incredibly powerful without even realizing it.

And so, my extraordinary experience in the hidden world began. I learned the terrifying nature of stray devils, met a magical girl with blonde hair, blue eyes, and a god-slaying weapon, got caught up in an incident and fought for my life, and formed a connection with the oldest demon. When I list it all out, it really is unbelievable. I'll think about whether to join the "Gray Magicians" after I go home and sleep on it. I also want to go over the details with my master and use his wisdom.

As I got up from the sofa to move, I started thinking. I'm still considering whether to join this group, but my answer to one question is immediate. I should tell her properly. I want to be friends with her. I want to talk to her again. So, I decided to tell her. This is the only thing I can give her right now.

"Hey, Lavinia. As I mentioned earlier, Shou is my pseudonym."

"Yes, I understand."

"My real name is Kuramoto Sota."

"…Kura, Kana?"

"That's a pretty cool name."

Lavinia blinked in surprise, and I couldn't help but laugh. She then asked if she had pronounced it wrong. Still, before we knew it, we were both giggling.

"Well, let me introduce myself again. I'm Sota Kuramoto. Um, Lavinia, if you don't mind, would you be my friend?"

"…Sure, Sota-kun. You can call me Lavinia. Next time you come to this country, I'll show you all the best spots here, just like I promised."

"Alright, as I mentioned earlier, I'll bring you lots of Japanese food and cultural items as souvenirs. By the way, have you ever played any games?"

"Games? I've never played any."

"Alright, then I'll bring some easy puzzle games next time. Let's play together!"

"I'll be looking forward to it!"

We walked along the path to the magic circle leading to Japan, chatting about nothing in particular. We parted ways with Lord Mephisto in the principal's office. He was a lighthearted yet elusive individual until the very end. I had a vague sense of what was going on with Lavinia.

I glanced at the girl beside me, who was wrapped in a dreamy aura and smiling happily. Even in such a small body, she possesses the power to kill even a god. I believe she can live her life straight through to the original story even without me.

But since we've become friends, I want her to smile more. If she ever gets hurt, I might be able to be there for her and support her. After all, the fate awaiting her is probably harsher than mine.

With a puzzled expression on her face, Lavinia looked at me, and with a small smile, I set off on my journey back to Japan.
