"You really are someone I can't understand..." she said, staring at me with a look that was somewhere between disbelief and irritation. "You're saying something like that as if it's the most natural thing in the world. And the worst part is that you're saying it so seriously that I genuinely can't tell whether I should take you seriously or assume you've completely lost your mind."
I couldn't help but smile a little.
It seemed like she still wasn't quite where I wanted her to be, but I could tell she was slowly getting used to talking to me. Maybe "warming up" wasn't exactly the right phrase, considering she looked like she wanted to stab me half the time, but compared to how she'd acted before, this was already progress.
A little more, and I'd probably be able to push her exactly where I wanted.
"Why?" I asked. "Are you scared?"
She frowned.
"Scared?" she repeated, sounding genuinely offended by the suggestion.
I shrugged casually.
