Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: New Friends

Ruby and Jaune were walking along in awkward silence, trying and failing to think of things to say to fill the void. As they walked, Jaune could be seen fiddling with a Silver spider shaped pendant hanging from his neck, twirling it around in his fingers.

Finally it seemed that Ruby had enough of the silence and took a red rectangular object from her back, which then extended out into a scythe, gears whirring inside of it, "Soo, I have this thing. Pretty neat huh?"

Jaune who was now eyeing the scythe whistles, "Pretty cool, you little reaper! So what kind of gun is it?," he asked this knowing that most huntress weapons functions as a blade and a gun.

Ruby frowned a little at the reaper comment then brightened back up at the question, all too happy to talk about her weapon, "It's a custom made, multi caliber high impact sniper rifle that fires different types of rounds depending on what I need them for, 20mm anti-material rounds are the biggest ones I use, which I can then modify further with dust versions of those rounds."

She droned on so much about her weapon that Jaune was contemplating stopping her when she stopped on her own to ask a question, "So what about yours, I don't see an obvious weapon on you, do you have it in your luggage?," she nodded to the obviously stuffed black bookbag strapped to his back.

He smirked at this adopting a smile, "No, my weapon isn't something that needs to be hidden in a bag like that, I can wear it just fine without drawing attention. I won't tell what it is though, that will spoil the surprise, you'll have to wait till initiation to see it."

Ruby pouted at this calling him a meanie and after failing to get the info out of him, proceeded to spend the rest of the walk trying and failing to guess at what his weapon could be before they arrived at the auditorium.

He just got finished rejecting her latest guess, a pen that turns into a sword, when they arrived at the auditorium and she went to join her sister, who he found out was the blond girl from earlier. Now alone Jaune looked around the auditorium.

It was starting to fill up, but the place was so big there was still quite a bit of room despite that. A stage dominated the front of the room, with a podium and microphone set up for a speech, though someone had yet to come up to give one. People milled about, talking to old friends who joined them in trying to get into the school.

He sighed at this, now that Ruby was off with her sister, he had no one to talk to. He sulked a bit at that before sitting upright as he felt a strong emotion behind him, giving him the feeling someone was looking at him.

Due to the nature of Grimm being drawn to negative emotions, Jaune naturally developed the ability to sense emotion as well, and what he got from this emotion was a sense of curiosity, stronger than the other emotions form the other people in the area and more directed.

Looking behind him and searching, he caught a pair of bright, emerald green eyes looking at him. The eyes were attached to to a rather pretty face, if Jaune did say so himself. This girl had long red hair that was tied up in a ponytail and was rather eye-catching with her get up that looked rather spartan, like she was ready for war at anytime.

Seeing that he was looking at her, the girl had the decency to look away, albeit with a bit of blush dusting her cheeks at being caught. Seeing that she was the source of the emotion he was feeling, Jaune made his way over to her. Reaching her he opened up the only way his awkward persona knew how, with a joke.

Yes for all his combat capability and training, Jaune was still very much awkward with social interaction. "I know I look good but you don't have to stare that hard," he chuckled light-heartedly when that comment only made the red head's blush more pronounced.

She mumbled something under her breath, so low that even Jaune's enhanced hearing was unable to tell what she said. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to embarrass and although I didn't quite catch what you just said, I realize I made you a bit uncomfortable. My name is Jaune Stephen Arc, may I ask your name?," he said this as he realized she would be a bit too embarrassed to start talking herself as the one who was caught staring.

Seeing his calm demeanor at the situation she was also able to relax and then couldn't help a bit of surprise appearing on her face when he asked for her name, "Y-you don't know?"

Seeing this Jaune sighed and put his hand to his forehead, a bit frustrated. "Second time today someone acts like I'm supposed to know their name. I am sorry to say I do not know, can you tell me?" Seeing this the girl's face had a slight, tentative smile on it, as if she were afraid of his reaction to her next words, "Hello Jaune, I am Pyrrha Nikos."

Her eyes searched his face, obviously looking for a reaction of some kind but he gave none, "It's nice to meet you Pyrrha, so why were you looking at me earlier?," he adopted a bit of a more mischievous smile which in turn made her feel like she needed to defend herself.

"It wasn't for anything like what you were implying, I was thinking a little too much over something in my head and apologize if a I stared bit," she said this in a truly apologetic manner. "Hmm," Jaune nodded in affirmation at this answer, "What were you thinking on so hard?"

She smiled politely, "Forgive me if I don't spill my brain out to someone I just met, but that's something I'd rather keep to myself." He shrugged, "That's fair I guess." The next few minutes passed in small talk between the two until the microphone on the stage was tapped, emitting a screeching noise that got everyone's attention, although some faunus did cover their ears at the noise, Jaune included.

A blonde woman with green eyes and rectangular glasses stood next to a man with gray hair and glasses with lenses so small that he might as well not wear them at all.

The woman cleared her throat, "Hello Everyone, I am Glynda Goodwitch, the Deputy headmistress here at Beacon and the man beside me is the headmaster, professor Ozpin. He has something to say to you all before you go to about your business, so pay attention please."

She stepped away after saying this and the man stepped up to the podium, " I'll... Keep this brief, you have come here in search of knowledge, to hone your craft and...," he droned on about how knowledge will only get them so far and how they need to take the final steps themselves. After that he directed them to the ballroom where they would be sleeping for the night before initiation.

He looked at Pyrrha and she looked back, "so to the ballroom we go I guess, huh?" She smiled lightly at him and nodded. They started walking after taking a look at the map in front of the auditorium and headed to the ballroom.

Later that night, Jaune came out of the locker room from his shower, dressed in gym shorts and a t-shirt, all ready for the night. The spider pendant was no longer on his neck as he put it in the locker assigned to him.

Entering the ballroom, he walked over to an empty enough space with his bookbag and prepared to roll out his sleeping bag for the night, but someone else beat him there. He looked a bit surprised before smiling, "Guess it seems we can't keep away from each other, huh Pyrrha?"

Pyrrha had gotten used to Jaune's teasing, but not so used that she didn't have a bit of pink on her cheeks, "I guess so Jaune. I'm sorry I was taking the spot you wanted. I'll move so-," he stopped her motioning to the roughly 10 to 15 feet of space in front of them.

"No need, there's plenty of room here, so let's just plop our sleeping bags down and relax," with that said he plopped his sleeping bag in the space right next to hers, smiling all the way. After doing that he lay down, sighing in relaxation.

Pyrrha eyed him for a bit before shrugging and following suit. With them both laid down they began to talk once again, "so, how do you think they are choosing teams, it'd be nice to be in a team with someone you get along with."

She answered, "I'm not sure, they never said, but it can't be that bad, I'm sure they'll pair us responsibly." Jaune frowned, "You see I would like to take you at your word for it but 'it can't be that bad' or 'it can't get worse' is just inviting things to happen."

Pyrrha waved her hand, brushing away the concern, "oh that's just superstition, there is no actual correlation between saying things and bad stuff happening."

Their conversation was abruptly interrupted by an orange haired girl who poked her face in between them, " you just jinxed yourself, you know. It does happen, like that time when Renny and me were caught out in the rain, his hair was soaked and he looked like a wet dog. I started laughing when he tried and failed to shake it out and then he said 'at least it can't get worse than this'. Next thing I know Renny is tripping on a twig, falling face first in the mud, sliding into a pile of leaves. They stuck to his face like he was growing a leafy beard."

She said all of that in one breath without pause, like she was on a sugar rush. Jaune and Pyrrha just stared at her in incredulity, their mouths opened wide. After some silence Jaune spoke, "Umm okay, who are you exactly?"

She opened her mouth as if to answer before another voice sounded out, "Nora, never-make me- run like that- again!," a man walked up to them in green clothing. He had black hair with a strip of pink in it and was currently gasping for breath, clearly running after the orange haired girl in front of him.

The girl giggled, "Sorry Renny, but I needed to join this talk, jinxes are serious business," she rubbed her chin with her fingers while nodding sagely as she said this, as if it was the smartest thing ever said.

This Renny guy had finally stopped panting enough to look at Jaune and Pyrrha properly, "I'm sorry if she bothered you guys, she didn't mean anything by it. She just doesn't know how to not butt in on conversations is all." There was an indignant, "HEY!," from the girl, Nora as she pouted at that, which Renny ignored.

He continued, "The name is Lie Ren by the way, the one who looks like she just drank twenty liters of soda is Nora Valkyrie." Nora pouted at the comment, clearly they have known each other for a while now and were very close.

Pyrrha, finally breaking from her stupor giggled, "well it's great to meet you two, and while it was a little surprising, she wasn't a bother at all." Nora grinned triumphantly at that, "See Renny, I knew they wouldn't mind."

The pink haired guy sighed, slapping his forehead at the statement. They had clearly been through this talk before, "and I told you, whether they are ok with it or not you shouldn't interrupt someone's conversation."

They bantered back and forth for a bit more before some noise in the corner of the ballroom caught their attention. Ruby and her blond haired sister were fighting, a dust cloud formed around their fight with the odd limb seen here and there. As they all watched the fight was broken up by Weiss who was calmer but still a little irritable at being bothered while she was trying to get to sleep.

Deciding it was a good idea themselves Pyrrha and Jaune excused themselves from Ren and Nora's conversation to get some shut-eye before the initiation tomorrow.

"Well it was nice talking to you two, but I guess we should be turning in so we're not tired tomorrow," as Pyrrha said this, Ren nodded in understanding. "that's ok we still need to get our spots ready to sleep too. Come on Nora, let's go," Ren turned as he said this, looking for a spot to lay down their things.

Accepting this as the end of the conversation, Nora skipped along behind him, "coming Ren!" The last light in the room went out and they were surrounded in darkness as they slept.
