Chapter 15 - The Commander Falls

The sky split open like cracked glass.

From the tear above the battlefield, something stepped through.

Not falling.

Not flying.

Arriving.

Its body was layered in dark armor that looked grown rather than forged—like the void itself had formed it. A massive blade dragged behind it, carving a faint line through the air.

The entire battlefield slowed.

Even the wave paused for half a second.

Then resumed like it was obeying a signal.

DING!

WAVE COMMANDER DETECTED

Designation: UNKNOWN

Threat Level: EXCEEDING CURRENT INSTANCE LIMIT

Rex's voice dropped immediately.

"Sam…"

"That thing is not part of the dungeon ecosystem."

I narrowed my eyes.

"So what is it?"

"…A system override unit."

"Something is controlling the wave from outside this instance."

That made my grip tighten.

"So I'm not fighting the dungeon."

"I'm fighting whoever is running it."

Rex didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

Below me, Ben shouted something I barely heard.

Zora's voice came through the party link.

"Boss! The commander is locking onto YOU!"

Leon appeared beside me instantly.

"I'll intercept."

I raised my hand.

"No."

"Everyone holds position."

"This one is mine."

Silence hit the battlefield.

Even the elves stopped firing for a moment.

The Commander tilted its head.

Its voice echoed directly into my mind.

"Vessel anomaly detected."

"Necromancer-type deviation."

"You should not exist at this level."

I smiled.

"Yeah?"

"People say that a lot around me."

BOOM.

The Commander moved.

No warning.

No buildup.

Just disappearance.

I barely reacted.

Shadow Step.

My body blurred backward as the blade cut through the space I was standing in.

A shockwave erased the ground behind me.

I landed on the broken edge of the cliff.

The Commander reappeared instantly in front of me.

Too fast.

Still no emotion.

"You are inefficient."

I exhaled.

"Rex… I need data."

A system window flickered.

COMBAT ANALYSIS ACTIVE

Enemy Speed: EXTREME

Enemy Strength: UNKNOWN

Enemy Armor: Adaptive

Enemy Core: Hidden

Rex spoke sharply.

"This is not a stat-check enemy."

"It learns."

I grinned.

"So do I."

The Commander struck again.

This time I didn't dodge first.

I met it.

VERTICAL INSTANT SLASH

A full arc of condensed energy collided with its blade.

The impact detonated the air.

For the first time—

The Commander slid back half a step.

"…Noted."

The battlefield below erupted again as monsters resumed attacking.

But the real war was above.

Just me and it.

I exhaled slowly.

"Rex."

"Party skills off."

Silence.

"…What?"

"I said turn them off."

"You will lose buffs."

"I know."

The glow around me faded.

The strength boost vanished.

The pressure hit instantly.

My body felt heavier.

Slower.

Real.

The Commander tilted its head again.

"Self-nerfing behavior detected."

"Illogical."

I smiled.

"Good."

"Then you won't understand this either."

I stepped forward.

No boost.

No system push.

Just my body.

The Commander attacked.

I didn't dodge fully.

The blade cut my shoulder.

Pain exploded instantly.

But I didn't step back.

Instead—

I grabbed its arm.

"Arise."

Nothing happened.

I gritted my teeth.

"Not for you."

"FOR ME."

A flicker of dark energy sparked.

Not full necromancy.

Not full summon.

Something unstable.

Something incomplete.

The Commander paused for the first time.

"…Soul manipulation?"

I smiled through the pain.

"Yeah."

"You don't like that?"

I forced energy into its armor.

Not to control it.

To disrupt it.

CRACK.

A small fracture appeared.

Rex spoke quickly.

"Sam—its adaptive armor is reacting."

"You've triggered its learning cycle early."

"Then let it learn this."

I raised my sword.

No flashy skill.

No named attack.

Just raw intent.

"Break."

I slammed the blade down.

BOOM.

The Commander was forced back across the air, crashing into a floating stone pillar in the sky.

It stood again.

But slower now.

Analyzing.

Learning.

"You are evolving mid-combat."

I wiped blood from my shoulder.

"So are you."

The Commander raised its blade.

But something changed.

The air around it sharpened.

Like reality itself was being compressed.

Rex's voice turned serious.

"…It's going second phase."

I tightened my grip.

"Good."

"Me too."

My shadow shifted.

Something inside me responded.

Not fully awakened.

But waking up because of it.

DING!

NECROMANCER CORE REACTION DETECTED

Skill Evolution Triggered

My vision flickered.

For a split second…

I saw something behind the Commander.

A throne.

No—something above it.

Something holding strings.

Then it vanished.

I smiled faintly.

"…So you're just a pawn too."

The Commander didn't respond.

It attacked.

This time—

I didn't block.

I met it head-on.
