Chapter 481 - Chapter 481: The Strength of Will

[Third Person Pov]

Lucian kept his eyes tightly shut. It was the only way he stood any chance of surviving being caught between a fully manifested Goddess and an enraged Titan. Even with his lids sealed, the pressure of their clashing divinities pressed against his mind like a physical weight, threatening to crush what little composure he still possessed.

Atlas lunged forward without warning and drove a colossal fist across Artemis's face. The impact snapped her head violently to the side and sent her tumbling through the air in a streak of silver-blue light. She twisted mid-flight, righted herself with elegant precision, and immediately began channeling the pure essence of her divinity.

Two of her four arms rose skyward. The night sky itself answered her call. The full moon bloomed into existence above the battlefield, vast and luminous, while a canopy of stars unfurled around it. For a moment it appeared as though the Goddess of the Hunt were holding the entire heavens in her hands.

With her remaining two arms she drew back the string of her antlered bow. No physical arrow rested against the string. Instead the stars surrounding the moon flared like countless arrowheads. Beams of piercing silver light erupted outward, streaking toward Atlas in a continuous, glittering barrage.

The Titan crossed his massive arms in front of his chest and simply endured. Each star-beam detonated against his skin with the force of an explosion, crackling and sparking as they drove him backward step by grinding step. Scorch marks bloomed across his radiant form, yet he never once cried out.

Then Atlas charged.

He came at her like a reckless bull, a living avalanche of pure strength. The moment he closed the distance he gave Artemis no opportunity to breathe or reset. Every punch carried the weight of a mountain. Every fist distorted the air and threatened to unravel the environment itself. Atlas raised one enormous hand high; the stars themselves seemed to circle his clenched fingers as light bent under the sheer gravitational pressure of his power.

"Demigod or Goddess—it makes no difference!" he roared, his voice shaking the fabricated dimension. "I am the one who stands at the pinnacle of power!"

His fists rained down upon Artemis in a relentless storm. Each blow tore golden ichor from her luminous form, the divine blood scattering like liquid starlight.

"To believe you stand any chance against me can only be described as arrogance!!"

"Argh—you talk too damn much," Artemis snarled, finally managing to slip free of the onslaught. "Shut up."

She slid past his guard with impossible grace, planted both feet against his broad chest, and used him as a springboard to launch herself backward, creating desperately needed distance. As she flew she waved all four hands in fluid, circular motions. Moonlight bent and folded at her command. With movements of pure celestial elegance she sculpted the essence of the moon into living constructs.

Silver wolves, stags, and mountain lions blossomed into existence around her, each one radiating soft lunar light. They surged forward as her personal army, leaping upon Atlas in a coordinated wave of fangs, antlers, and claws.

The Titan of Strength barely acknowledged them. A single flex of his colossal muscles sent the entire pack flying apart in bursts of dissolving silver light. One casual punch distorted the air so violently that a shockwave blasted outward, erasing what remained of the constructs in an instant.

Undeterred, Artemis began using all four of her arms in perfect unison—two drawing the bowstring taut while the other two rapidly wove new arrows of condensed starlight into place. She loosed them in continuous streams, each shaft hunting Atlas with unerring precision.

Yet the Titan simply charged through the storm of projectiles as though they were nothing more than rain. He was the very definition of overbearing force; his strength rendered him nearly invincible.

Artemis, however, was the Goddess of the Hunt. In her eyes Atlas was not an unstoppable force—he was simply another prey animal that had grown too large and too proud.

"I am the hunter," she declared, her voice ringing with divine authority, "and you are the prey!"

Her arrows pursued him relentlessly while she herself became a blur of nimble motion, always maintaining distance, always circling, always searching for the perfect opening.

"I am the strength that once bore the heavens themselves!!" Atlas roared, resisting her divinity with raw, overwhelming presence. He unleashed his own authority in answer. "And in the face of true power, you learn to kneel!!"

Though he still stood some distance away, a single casual gesture of his fist caused the pressure across the entire battlefield to spike. The weight of the world itself seemed to settle upon Artemis's shoulders.

She cried out as her knees buckled, forced down toward the earth by a force no amount of grace or skill could simply evade.

"Strength alone has no meaning in the wild," Artemis gritted out between clenched teeth. She pressed both pairs of hands flat against the trembling earth. "It is survival of the fittest!"

At her command the ground erupted. Trees of impossible height exploded upward in a single heartbeat, their trunks thicker than castle towers, their canopies interlocking so tightly that the entire battlefield vanished beneath a living roof of silver-leafed wilderness. In moments the landscape had transformed into an endless primordial forest that swallowed everything—sky, storm, and Titan alike.

Atlas spun, suddenly blind within the dense growth. Artemis's voice echoed from every direction at once, seeming to come from the trees themselves.

"The hunter is not the beast that possesses the greatest strength," she intoned, "but the one cunning enough to bring down beasts greater than himself."

Shadows deepened unnaturally. The forest floor and the spaces between the trunks filled with monstrous creatures of pure moonlight—wolves the size of horses, stags with antlers like spears, mountain lions whose eyes burned with cold silver fire. They circled the Titan in silence, waiting.

Then the moon, still hanging low and massive overhead, flared. Its light spilled downward in a flood, illuminating every predator and every arrow that now streaked through the canopy toward Atlas. Animals leapt with jaws open. Arrows of condensed moonlight sought every joint and vulnerable point. The wild itself seemed to turn against him, whispering that he was lost, that the world itself demanded his surrender.

Chains of freezing lunar energy rained from the moon and wrapped around Atlas's limbs and torso, tightening with each passing second. They tried to drag him to his knees, to force him into submission.

The chains only fueled his rage.

"I have endured!" Atlas roared through gritted teeth, every muscle straining against the bindings. "I have endured the weight of the world, the wrath of the gods, and the punishment meant to break a Titan for eternity! I did not survive because I was the strongest—I became the strongest because I endured what would have destroyed everything else!"

With a maddened bellow he shattered the lunar chains in a single explosive surge of power. The pressure radiating from his body spiked so violently that the canopy groaned in protest. Trees bent nearly double. Branches snapped and splintered. Wood exploded outward in showers of silver leaves and shattered bark.

Atlas straightened to his full, terrifying height, rising until he stood above both the wilderness and the moon itself. Then he drew back one colossal fist and drove it straight into the glowing lunar disk.

The moon transformed in an instant—revealing itself as Artemis's true form. She cried out in agony as the Titan's punch sent her slamming into the earth with catastrophic force. The impact generated an earthquake of impossible magnitude. Golden ichor sprayed from her mouth in a glittering arc as the ground cratered beneath her.

The shockwave blasted Lucian clear across the battlefield. He tumbled violently, skidding and rolling until his already depleted body finally came to a stop. Energy reserves scraped down to almost nothing, every limb trembling with exhaustion. Yet the nurturing presence of Artemis's divinity had done its work; the wound to his psyche, though still raw, no longer threatened to unravel him completely.

He pressed one bloodied hand over his eyes and cursed under his breath. Then, with deliberate finality, he forced his own vision to fail. When he lowered his hand, his eyes had turned a milky, sightless white.

"Lady Artemis…" Lucian called hoarsely, pushing himself onto his hands and knees. He could hear nothing but her cries of pain and the heavy, bone-shaking impacts of the battle still raging. The vibrations traveled up through the earth and into his bones.

'I see… so this is how gods truly fight,' he analyzed, fingers clawing into the dirt. 'They use their words to impose their authority over reality itself… and over each other.'

His fists tightened until his knuckles cracked.

'I have to help her. But what the hell can I even do—'

Lucian smashed his forehead into the ground.

Blood burst across the soil with a sharp, wet crack. He lifted his head and drove it down again. And again. And again. Until the entire front of his face ran with fresh blood that steamed in the cold air, his milky eyes staring blankly forward.

'Pathetic!!' he roared inside his own mind. 'Is this really what my resolve amounted to?! I catch a single glimpse of real power and all of a sudden I start losing my mind?!'

Artemis's continued cries of pain only made the blood in his veins boil hotter.

He tried to rise, but a sudden spike of pressure from Atlas slammed him flat against the earth once more. Undeterred, Lucian braced both hands against the cracked ground and pushed with everything he had left.

Tears prickled at the corners of his blind, milky eyes. His teeth ground together so hard that a molar cracked with an audible snap; blood flooded his mouth and spilled over his lips. Bones creaked and groaned under the impossible weight. When he finally forced his mouth open to shout, only more blood poured out.

With the last scraps of magic still flickering inside him, Lucian began to chant. The blood pooling around his body ignited with a deep crimson glow. Sigils and arcane marks rose from every droplet, twisting into existence before fixing themselves across his skin in burning patterns. He had activated [Suicidal Branding].

Ribbons of living script—words linked end to end—unfurled around him like a halo, spinning in a protective orbit. They formed a metaphysical barrier that pushed back against the crushing pressure threatening to squash him into nothingness.

Lucian pressed one trembling hand to his forehead, breathing in ragged gasps. He could feel his own bones fracturing and knitting back together in the same agonizing instant—pure, mind-breaking torment that would have driven any sane person to madness. Lucian, however, had never claimed sanity.

"Lady Artemis… I'm sorry," he said, voice low and sobering. "I showed you such a pathetic side of myself that even my own mother would have been ashamed of me."

"Lucian—Ahh!" Artemis cried out as she continued to battle Atlas. "Please, just run! I've got this!"

"No, you do not! Liar!" Atlas snarled. Another thunderous punch drove the goddess into the ground. A single stomp of his massive foot pinned her there. "You don't have the power to stand against me!!" He kicked her away with contemptuous force, eliciting another cry of pain.

"True," Lucian admitted, his voice suddenly calm, almost quiet. "I might not have the power… but I do have the will."

He extended one hand into the darkness that filled his sightless world. The blindness, strangely, made it easier to conceptualize what he intended to create.

'Trace… on,' he commanded inwardly. 'This is a shot in the dark. It had better work.'

Energy crackled and accumulated between his fingers. The pommel of a sword began to materialize first, followed by the unmistakable sounds of a hammer striking heated steel—echoing from inside his own hands as the weapon took shape. The ribbons of Suicidal Branding continued to dance around him in a protective halo.

When the elegant blade finally completed itself and Lucian closed his fingers around the hilt, a violent wave of power erupted from the cracked skin of his forehead.

In his hands rested the sword of Alexander the Great.

From Lucian's body, pure willpower exploded outward like an uncontrolled tidal wave. Arcs of force and bolts of raw determination snapped and struck the ground around him as the surge swept across the entire battlefield.

"W-What is happening?! What is this?! How are you doing this?!" Atlas shouted in disbelief.

His colossal Titan form began to shrink. Artemis's divine body contracted as well. In moments both the Titan and the Goddess found themselves forced back into their mortal vessels, staring at Lucian in stunned silence.

He strained under the effort, every muscle trembling as he projected nothing but sheer willpower against them. The full weight of his determination pressed down like an invisible mountain.

"I am Lucian Blackheart," he declared, hair whipping wildly across his bloodied face, "and I have a goal."

His voice rose, steady and unyielding. His willpower settled like a crimson-black crown above his head.

"And if I am to accomplish everything my heart desires, then my will must be strong enough to carry me there. So even when I stand before a Titan… my will shall not falter. It shall not bend. It shall not yield."

Lucian clenched both fists, forcing the overwhelming presence outward with everything he had left.

"Because if a Titan possesses the strength to stand above all others, then I will possess the will to stand above even them!"
