The dust finally began to settle over Konoha.
A gray-brown haze floated through the air like the lingering breath of war. The once vibrant village, full of noise and everyday life, now stood wounded. The buildings lay cracked and broken, rooftops smashed apart, and entire streets bore deep trenches from jutsu impacts.
The smoke rose in thin ghostly plumes, curling upward into the reddening sky as the evening sun struggled to pierce through the murk.
The village was still too still.
The cries of civilians had died down hours ago. Now only the distant groans of the injured, the flicker of burning rooftops, and the hurried footsteps of medics moving wounded to triage tents broke the silence.
Jōnin and ANBU stood guard over streets littered with broken stone and shattered signboards, their eyes grim and sharp, weary but determined. Their armor and clothes bore new cuts, their foreheads glistened with sweat, but no one dared relax.
The adrenaline had not fully faded yet.
The children clung to each other in hiding shelters, eyes wide with shock, their small bodies trembling despite the comforting whispers of academy teachers who did their best to remain calm.
Even with victory, this night had changed them.
Not many of the well-known figures had died, but the price of the battle could not be ignored.
Dozens of chūnin lay covered with cloths, their comrades standing silent in mourning.
Several skilled jōnin who had fought bravely until their last breath were now being carried away by medical teams, their bodies processed for the funerary honors they would receive at dawn.
Their deaths were not meaningless.
They had protected the civilians and bought time as they had defended their home.
But it still hurt.
Shikaku Nara stood beside a broken street lamp, eyes narrowed behind a face full of exhaustion. His voice was low as he spoke to Inoichi and Chōza, who stood beside him, armor cracked and scorched.
"…We lost more than we should have," Shikaku muttered, rubbing the bridge of his nose. "Even knowing it was war… it doesn't sit right."
Chōza clenched his fists, lips trembling ever so slightly. "They died protecting their home. There is honor in that."
Inoichi closed his eyes. "Honor doesn't make the ache smaller."
Their chakras were low, their bodies tired, but none of them moved to sit, as the village still needed them.
But the greatest shadow cast over the village was that of their leader.
The Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, had fallen in battle.
The word spread quickly, whispered at first, then spoken aloud, then shouted as confirmation came from the Sandaime's personal ANBU squad. The moment that truth landed, the entire village shifted in mood, filled with panic, grief, disbelief, and anger.
A young academy teacher knelt in the street, staring blankly ahead as a medic told her the news. Tears slid down her cheeks without her noticing.
A market shopkeeper covered his face with both hands, muttering, "No… not the Third… not him…"
The children who did not fully understand looked around at the adults crying and felt fear for the first time.
Even the hardened ANBU, masked and emotionless, bowed their heads in silence.
Hiruzen Sarutobi had died protecting the village he had spent almost his entire life nurturing.
He had met his end fighting his own student.
No death could hurt deeper.
Meanwhile, Orochimaru, with his mission completed, had slipped away during the chaos, vanishing like a serpent into the tall grass.
Not even Jōnin-level sensory ninjas detected him in time.
He left behind nothing but destruction, corpses, and the memory of a twisted smile that even now made the surviving shinobi grit their teeth.
They could not chase him, not while the village itself was bleeding.
And then, there was Alex.
In the panic of war, he had moved with ruthless precision.
Important nobles who had built their power on the tears of civilians were cut down like rotting branches.
Even merchants, who had schemed and profited off the suffering of the masses, lay dead in their lavish compounds, shocked expressions frozen on their faces.
Alex had turned the corrupt people into ash in one night.
When the truth surfaced, panic spread among the officials like wildfire.
Those who had benefited from those dead men looked pale with fear and those who hated them whispered prayers of thanks.
But politically, socially, and economically, it was devastating.
A storm had been triggered, and within an hour, Alex was classified as an S-Rank criminal.
He was now wanted globally.
Alex was now a man whose existence was a threat to entire nations.
A bounty was placed on his head that rivaled even the notorious missing-nin.
His name entered the Bingo Book in crimson ink.
If not for one man, the devastation could have swallowed the entire village.
Perched atop the toad Gamabunta, Jiraiya of the Sannin battled the enormous serpents Orochimaru had summoned. His roars, the crashing of Gamabunta's sword, and the raining explosions from giant jutsu had prevented even more catastrophic losses.
Without Jiraiya, entire districts would have been crushed.
Many more civilians would now be dead.
He stood atop Gamabunta even now, bruised, cut, and heavily breathing, staring down at the broken rooftops.
"…Sensei," He whispered under his breath. "Even in the end, you carried the weight we couldn't."
Despite everything, the worst had been avoided.
ANBU and Jōnin had managed to push out the invading forces from Sunagakure and Otogakure. The bodies of enemy shinobi lay scattered through alleyways and smashed storefronts.
The civilians who could not fight had been evacuated safely into shelters beneath buildings, guarded tightly by ninja who never left their posts.
Kurenai patted a crying child on her head, whispering softly. "It's alright. We're safe now. You're going to be okay."
Asuma sat on a broken step, smoking without speaking, staring at the ground, his jaw clenched painfully tight. His eyes were red.
Iruka walked through the shelters one by one, checking each child, forcing himself to smile even though his heart was breaking.
A single sob escaped from a girl in a blue dress.
That sound echoed through the quiet ruins.

In the Konoha Hospital
The sterile scent of medicine and disinfectant hung heavily in the air as a nurse finished tying the last strip of white bandage around Naruto's arm. The boy winced slightly, but his grin never left his face.
"You're lucky, Naruto," The nurse sighed. "If that attack had gone any deeper—"
"I know, I know!" Naruto waved his good hand sheepishly. "Sorry for worrying you!"
She exhaled helplessly. He was a handful, but there was something contagious about that fearless smile. With a gentler expression, she stepped aside, allowing him to stand and walk out into the corridor.
The door slid open, and Naruto froze as he saw his mother standing in the hallway.
The moment she saw him, her expression collapsed into relief.
"Naruto Uzumaki… what did you think you were doing, rushing into battle like that?!"
Her tone sounded harsh, but the tremble beneath it exposed her heart.
Naruto blinked, rubbing the back of his head. "M–Mom! I told you, I'm fine! It's just a scratch, see?"
Before she could respond, he wrapped his good arm around her waist, pulling her close and burying his face into her shoulder like a child half his age.
Kushina's breath caught, the reprimand dissolving instantly. Her fingers hesitated and then slowly closed around his back, embracing him fiercely.
Naruto laughed lightly and said. "You know, Mom. I'm tougher than I look."
