Chapter 756 - 755-Conditional Request

The sizzle of meat on the grill filled the space between them, a mundane soundtrack to a conversation that had suddenly become anything but ordinary. Renjiro sat motionless, his chopsticks frozen halfway to his mouth, as Nakada's words settled into his consciousness as stones dropped into still water.

'She also intended to break the engagement.'

The revelation should have been a relief. It should have been the clean resolution to a problem he had been wrestling with for months. Instead, Renjiro found himself caught in a strange, disorienting space—a void where expected emotions should have been.

'Why do I feel… off?'

He ran through the possibilities with clinical precision. Relief? Present, but muted. Satisfaction? Absent. Gratitude? Not quite.

Then it hit him—an uncomfortable realisation that made him want to cringe inwardly.

'Was I expecting her to be hurt? To be distraught? Did I want her to fight for this arrangement?'

The thought was arrogant. Borderline narcissistic. He had spent so long preparing for a difficult conversation, bracing for emotional fallout, that the absence of resistance felt almost like a letdown. As if her easy agreement somehow diminished the weight of his decision.

'The world doesn't revolve around you, Renjiro,' he reminded himself sharply.

'You are not the protagonist of this story.'

He thought of Naruto—the orange-clad whirlwind who would one day reshape the shinobi world through sheer force of will and relentless optimism. Compared to that, Renjiro was a supporting character at best. A footnote. A variable in someone else's narrative.

He forced the thoughts down, locking them away behind the mental walls he had built over years of survival. When he spoke, his voice was calm, controlled—the mask firmly in place.

"Why?"

Nakada tilted her head, a slight smile playing at the corners of her mouth. "Why what?"

"Why do you want to break the engagement?"

She chuckled softly, the sound warm rather than mocking. "I could ask you the same question. Why do you want to break it?"

Renjiro exhaled slowly, the air carrying the scent of grilled meat and charcoal. 'The deal wasn't made with my consent. I was forced into it.'

But he didn't say that directly. Instead, he chose his words with care.

"When the agreement was made, I had no real say in it."

Nakada's eyes narrowed slightly, a flicker of something—interest? assessment?—crossing her features. "Do you mean you were forced into it?"

"Not exactly." Renjiro paused, weighing his next words. "But I'm not the same shinobi I was back then."

She studied him for a long moment, her gaze uncomfortably perceptive. "You're stronger now. Your reputation has grown. So you have leverage against the clan."

Renjiro sighed. The interpretation was accurate, but incomplete. "If that's how you want to frame it, fine. But that's not my main point." He leaned forward slightly, his voice gaining intensity.

"We were both pushed into this arrangement. Now that I have more influence—within the clan and the village—the agreement should be reconsidered."

Nakada said nothing, her expression unreadable.

'I need to push her more.'

"My parents," Renjiro began, the words coming more easily now, "came from different clans. Different villages. My father was Uzumaki. My mother was Uchiha." He held her gaze. "Despite all of that, they chose each other."

He let the statement hang, allowing its weight to settle.

"They married for love." His voice hardened slightly. "Being forced into a marriage arrangement is wrong. When I marry someone, it will be because I chose them. Not because a deal was made over a table when I wasn't even in the room."

Nakada's response was calm, measured—the question of someone who had already anticipated his argument.

"Do you think you could never love me?"

Renjiro felt frustration rise, hot and immediate. He pushed it down.

"That's not the point."

His voice was sharper now, the control slipping just slightly. "The shinobi world is dangerous. Every mission could be our last. We live in survival mode—constantly. I don't know if I'll live long enough to see the next great war, let alone build a life with someone I was ordered to marry."

He paused, gathering himself.

"What bothers me most is losing the freedom of choice. Not whether I could eventually feel something for you. The fact that the choice was never mine to make."

He turned the question back on her, his eyes narrowing.

"But why are you acting like I'm the one in the wrong here? You also wanted to break the engagement."

Nakada's expression shifted—a subtle change, but Renjiro caught it. The playful mask slipped, revealing something more genuine beneath.

"You're right," she said quietly. "The engagement wasn't fair. My father and brother—" she paused, choosing her words carefully, "—they strong-armed you into the arrangement. I know how they operate politically."

Renjiro blinked. That was not what he had expected.

Nakada continued, her voice carrying the weight of someone who had spent years observing the men who ran her clan.

"Father was… pragmatic. He saw your potential and wanted to secure it. Fugaku inherited that same mindset. They don't see people; they see assets. Pieces on a board."

She met his eyes. "I want you to understand something, Renjiro. While the village leadership mistreats the Uchiha, the ordinary villagers respect the clan. They don't see the political tensions. They see the police force keeping order. They see shinobi protecting their homes. The resentment isn't universal."

Renjiro filed that information away, but his focus remained on the contradiction in front of him.

"If we both agree about the root problem," he said slowly, "then why are you acting like I did something wrong?"

Nakada's silence was answer enough.

Renjiro pressed forward, the realisation crystallising as he spoke.

"Did you want the upper hand?" His voice was quiet but sharp. "Did you want to be the one who initiated breaking the engagement?"

She didn't respond. Didn't confirm or deny. But her silence was confirmation enough.

The moment stretched, uncomfortable and charged. Then Nakada exhaled, some of the tension leaving her shoulders.

"There's no point in arguing further." She met his eyes, and he saw something there—a decision, already made.

"I'll agree to break the engagement."

Renjiro was appalled. 'What the hell is she talking about?'

For a moment, he was too stunned by the Kunoichi's audacity.

"Under one condition." Nakada continued.

Renjiro almost laughed. Almost. "You're not really in a position to make demands."

"But I'll indulge you, so humour me."

He gestured for her to continue.

Nakada leaned forward, her voice dropping to match the intimate space between them.

"I will only agree to break the engagement if you become a bridge between the village and the Uchiha clan."

Renjiro's mind, which had been preparing for any number of personal conditions, stuttered.

"Use your influence," Nakada continued, her voice carrying the weight of genuine conviction. "Help reduce the tension between Konoha's leadership and the Uchiha."
