The entrance barrier soon activated. Renjiro turned, his new vision tracking the familiar chakra signature that was approaching. Kushina emerged from the tunnel, her expression carrying the particular intensity of someone who had recovered mentally and was now ready to see what he had been doing.
She stopped at the edge of the chamber, her gaze sweeping across the devastation. Her eyes widened slightly, but she did not seem surprised; she had seen him train before, had witnessed his growth over the years, and she understood that his new power would require new methods of control.
"Was this intentional?" she asked, her voice carrying a note of dry humour.
"No," Renjiro replied quietly, his voice carrying the weight of his realisation. "Even deliberately weakened C-rank techniques now produce far greater destructive force. I used the same amount of chakra as always, but the output was exponentially greater."
He paused, his gaze falling to his own hands.
"I need to learn control. I need to understand what I've become before I can safely interact with anyone."
Kushina nodded slowly, her expression shifting from humour to seriousness.
"Then let's find out together."
Renjiro explained his plan; he wanted to test the right eye specifically, but he did not want to test it against ordinary targets. He needed something lethal, complicated, unpredictable, and heavily chakra-based. He asked Kushina to build the most sophisticated trap course she reasonably could; he needed to understand the limits of his new ability, and ordinary targets would not provide the data he required.
Kushina began constructing the trial; this section showcased her mastery. She created layered barrier seals that would block passage and redirect attacks. She wove detection arrays that would track movement and trigger responses. She embedded delayed explosive tags that would detonate at unpredictable intervals. She designed chakra mines that would activate when chakra passed over them. She crafted sealing traps that would immobilise anyone who triggered them.
She erected rotating suppression fields that would drain chakra from anything within their radius. She constructed directional barrier walls that would deflect attacks. She wove hidden trigger formulas that would activate based on specific conditions. The maze gradually became an Uzumaki masterpiece, a labyrinth of sealing that would challenge even the most skilled shinobi.
Renjiro watched carefully; he realised that this was exactly why he had wanted Kushina. Nobody understood sealing complexity better. Her mastery was evident in every seal, every barrier, every trap. He would not find a better test for his new ability.
Before beginning, Renjiro explained what he believed the right eye should do. He spoke in terms of principles, not techniques; he believed that Spatial Duality and Purge of the Wicked had become one phenomenon. He wanted to understand what had changed.
"The right eye should allow me to manifest a second self," he said, his voice carrying the weight of his theory.
He activated only the right eye; he described the sensation. Instead of splitting himself, something different happened. His duplicated existence compressed; reality briefly felt thinner. The surrounding space bent slightly; green flames began emerging. Not violently, but quietly, purposefully.
"The flames are forming," he said, his voice carrying the weight of his observation. "They're assembling into a shape."
The flames slowly assembled; not clone creation, not summoning, but formation. The figure gradually developed; an outline, limbs, a face, a posture, until an exact copy of Renjiro existed, entirely made from translucent green flames. The phantom stood before him, its form flickering slightly, its eyes glowing with the same pattern as his own.
"I'm not controlling it," Renjiro said, his voice carrying the weight of his realisation. "I AM it."
He described the psychic experience; both bodies thought simultaneously, perceived simultaneously, moved simultaneously. There was no delay, no duplicated thoughts, no confusion, no memory lag, no split personalities. One consciousness, two perspectives. He could see through both sets of eyes, hear through both sets of ears, feel through both sets of hands.
He began with simple movement tests; he raised one hand, and the phantom mirrored the motion. He raised both; the phantom did the same. He walked separately, the phantom moving in a different direction. He circled one another, their movements perfectly synchronised. He swapped positions; the transition was seamless. He accelerated independently; everything felt completely natural, almost effortless.
Kushina watched, fascinated. She noticed that the phantom was not copying Renjiro; it possessed perfect autonomy. Yet somehow, every action remained synchronised. She commented that she had never seen anything like it; the phantom was not a clone, not a summon, not a technique. It was an extension of his consciousness.
"It's like you're in two places at once," she said, her voice carrying the weight of her observation. "Not as two separate beings, but as one being occupying two spaces."
Renjiro decided to begin the test; only the phantom would enter the trap maze. His real body remained safely outside, watching through the phantom's eyes. He wanted to know if the phantom could function independently, if it could navigate the complex traps that Kushina had designed.
The phantom advanced into the maze. It encountered a barrier seal; it did not attempt to break through. It simply flowed around it, its spectral form passing through the barrier without resistance. It encountered explosive tags; it triggered them deliberately, observing their patterns before moving on. It encountered suppression arrays; the flames flickered but did not dim. It encountered rotating seals; it passed through them without difficulty. It encountered detection grids; it triggered them, but the traps that followed could not catch it.
Kushina watched, her expression shifting from curiosity to recognition. The phantom was not just powerful; it was intelligent. It understood the traps, it anticipated their patterns, and it navigated them with the same analytical precision that Renjiro brought to everything.
"It's learning," she said quietly. "It's adapting to the traps as it encounters them."
Kushina silently activated the strongest trap; a massive chakra explosion designed to completely engulf the corridor. The energy surged forward, its pressure immense, its heat intense. It was designed to be normally unavoidable.
Instead of escaping, the phantom walked directly into it. It raised both hands, grasping the exploding chakra. The flames consumed it; the explosion shrunk; green flames fed; barrier seals collapsed; the explosion disappeared. Like a fire starving another fire, the phantom devoured the chakra.
Renjiro described the sensation; a wave of chakra, not foreign, already purified, already refined, flowing directly into his own coils. His reserves increased; fatigue disappeared. The chakra integrated instantly, no resistance, no impurity.
"It's not burning matter," he said, his voice carrying the weight of his realisation. "It burns chakra itself. It digests it, filters it, and returns only usable chakra. It's functioning as a living chakra refinery."
Kushina slowly walked toward the now-empty blast zone. Nothing remained; the explosion was simply gone. She understood the implications; enemy techniques, Bijuu Bombs, barrier attacks, massive ninjutsu—everything chakra-based could potentially become fuel.
"This is terrifying," she said quietly. "You could consume any chakra-based attack. You could turn your enemy's power into your own."
Renjiro dismissed the phantom; the green flames dissolved, their energy returning to him. He stood silently, thinking. He had proven that the ability worked, but he had not yet found its limits. He did not know how much chakra it could consume, nor whether there was a limit at all.
"We've only proven that it works," he said quietly. "We haven't found where it breaks."
