Chapter 941 - 940-Do you understand the damage you’ve already caused?

The question hung in the air like a blade suspended above them all, its edge glinting with the weight of Minato's barely contained fury. "Now, why the hell did you think that doing this in front of the other Jōnin was better than coming to me with this?"

The room became completely silent; the kind of silence that pressed against eardrums, that made the very air feel thick and unbreathable. The council chamber, which had been filled with the murmur of departing Jōnin moments before, now felt cavernous and empty.

Danzō's expression remained carefully neutral, his visible eye betraying nothing. But Renjiro noticed the subtle tightening of his fingers around the polished wood of his cane, the almost imperceptible shift in his weight.

Homura and Koharu, the other two elders who had accompanied Danzō, were less successful at concealing their discomfort. Homura's jaw tightened, a muscle twitching beneath his weathered skin; Koharu's hands clasped together more tightly, her knuckles whitening with tension.

Hiruzen watched Minato carefully. The Third Hokage stood near the back of the room, his posture relaxed but his attention razor-sharp. He was observing, analysing, cataloguing every detail of the confrontation; the way Minato's chakra was beginning to flare, the way the air in the room seemed to grow heavier with each passing moment.

Renjiro felt the pressure too. Minato's chakra was not being directed at anyone in particular, but its presence was impossible to ignore. It filled the room like a rising tide, pressing against the walls and the ceiling, making the space seem to grow smaller. The temperature seemed to drop, or perhaps that was just Renjiro's imagination; the cold certainty of what was happening settling into his bones.

He's furious, Renjiro thought, the observation carrying a strange sense of detachment. I've never seen him like this.

Minato's voice cut through the silence again. "You called an emergency council. You gathered the village's most senior Jōnin. You stood in front of them and accused the Jōnin Commander of treason." He paused, letting the weight of his words sink in.

"Public. Explosive. Unverified. Directed at one of the most trusted shinobi in this village. And you didn't consult the Hokage. You didn't even give Renjiro an opportunity to respond before branding him a traitor in front of his peers."

Danzō opened his mouth to respond, his voice carrying the particular calm of someone who had prepared for this conversation. "Hokage-sama, the matter was of such urgency that-"

SLAM!

The sound echoed through the chamber like thunder. Minato's hand had come down on the council table with enough force to crack the polished wood, a fissure spreading from the point of impact like a spider's web across the surface.

Everyone reacted. Homura actually flinched, his carefully maintained composure cracking for just a moment. Koharu's hands flew to her chest, her eyes widening. Hiruzen's posture shifted almost imperceptibly, his body tensing with readiness. Danzō's visible eye narrowed, his grip on his cane tightening.

Renjiro felt his own body respond, his muscles coiling with instinctive readiness. The display of strength was a reminder, a warning; Minato was not just a diplomat, not just a politician. He was one of the most powerful shinobi in the world, and he was angry.

Minato's voice was cold, controlled, carrying an edge that none of them had ever heard before. "You had no authority to bypass me, Danzō. You had no authority to publicly accuse one of Konoha's highest-ranking shinobi without presenting evidence to the Hokage first. You had no authority to do this." He paused, his blue eyes blazing with barely contained fury.

"And doing this only days after the village suffered an attack borders on insubordination."

He began to pace, his movements measured, deliberate. "The village is already unsettled. The Jōnin are already questioning the recent attacks, already wondering if our defences are adequate, already looking for someone to blame. And you chose this moment to publicly accuse the Jōnin Commander of treason?" He shook his head, his voice carrying a note of genuine disbelief.

"Do you understand what you've done? Do you understand the consequences?"

Minato listed them, his voice cold and precise. "Shinobi confidence is fractured. The Jōnin will now question whether their commander is a traitor. Foreign enemies will sense instability and probe our defences. The other villages are like sharks in the water, Danzō. They smell blood, and they will attack."

Danzō remained leaning on his cane, apparently unmoved by the cracked table, by the display of fury, by the weight of Minato's accusations. His expression was placid, his voice carrying the particular calm of someone who believed they were in the right. "National security takes precedence over protocol, Hokage-sama. Treason within Konoha's military leadership cannot be handled delicately. It must be exposed, rooted out, and eliminated."

He paused, his visible eye meeting Minato's gaze with unwavering intensity. "And I would argue that your attachment to Commander Renjiro has compromised your judgment in this matter."

The words landed like a physical blow. Renjiro felt his stomach drop, felt the cold realisation of what Danzō was doing. He wasn't defending his actions; he was shifting the focus, turning the argument from "Why did you bypass the Hokage?" into "Can the Hokage be trusted to judge Renjiro?"

Danzō continued, "Renjiro is not merely a subordinate to you, Minato. He is your friend. He is connected to your family through Kushina. He is trusted with Konoha's barrier and sensitive operations. He has access to information that few others possess." He paused, his eye narrowing. "How can you investigate him objectively when he is so deeply embedded in your inner circle? How can the village trust your judgment when your loyalty to him is so personal?"

Minato's chakra flared even more intensely; the pressure in the room became almost unbearable. The air seemed to crackle with energy, with barely contained power. Renjiro could feel it pressing against his skin, could see the way Homura and Koharu were beginning to sweat, could see the way Hiruzen's eyes had narrowed with concern.

He's provoking him, Renjiro realised, the thought carrying a cold clarity. Danzō is deliberately provoking Minato. He wants him to lose control. He wants him to appear unstable, compromised, unfit to lead.

But Minato was too experienced to fall for such an obvious trap. He took a breath, visibly forcing himself to calm down, to regain control. The pressure in the room eased slightly, but only slightly. His voice was cold, controlled, carrying an edge of steel.

"You're trying to redirect the conversation, Danzō. But I won't let you. Not this time."

He stepped closer to the elder, his presence dominating the space between them. "I asked you a question. What proof do you have? What evidence justified calling an emergency council? What evidence justified publicly accusing Renjiro of treason and damaging his reputation before an investigation had even begun?"

Danzō began to answer, his mouth opening to form words, but Minato cut him off with a sharp gesture. "Suspicion is not proof. Vague insinuations are not evidence. You have damaged a man's reputation, possibly irreparably, on the basis of what? A hunch? A whispered rumour?"

Minato's voice rose, his passion bleeding through his carefully maintained composure. "Even if Renjiro is completely cleared, even if the evidence proves to be fabricated, the doubt will remain. There will always be those who wonder, who whisper, who suspect. You cannot take back a public accusation, Danzō. You cannot undo the damage you've already caused."

He paused, his gaze locking with Danzō's. "Do you now understand what you've done? Do you understand the damage you've already caused?"

Renjiro remained silent, watching Danzō prepare his response. His expression was cold and controlled, a mask of professional composure that betrayed nothing of the storm raging within him. His EMS flared active, the eternal Mangekyō Sharingan spinning slowly in his eye sockets as he registered every detail of the room.

Through the enhanced perception of his eyes, he could see things that others couldn't. Danzō's elevated heart rate, the subtle increase in his pulse despite his outward calm. The minute changes in his breathing, the way his inhalations had become slightly shallower, slightly more controlled. The tension in his fingers around the cane, the way his knuckles had paled with the pressure of his grip. The muscle contractions in his face, the almost imperceptible twitching around his covered eye. The controlled stillness of someone who had rehearsed this conversation, who had planned for every possible response.

He's prepared for this, Renjiro thought, the observation carrying a cold certainty. He knew exactly how Minato would react. He's been planning this for weeks, maybe months.

Renjiro began calculating the layers of the trap, his tactical mind automatically analysing the possibilities. The public accusation was only the first stage, the initial blow designed to destabilise and disorient. The real objective was likely more complex; to force Renjiro to explain himself, to make him appear defensive and guilty, to create suspicion around his relationship with Orochimaru, to turn Minato's loyalty into evidence of bias.

He's prepared multiple layers of accusation, Renjiro realised. If one fails, he'll move to the next. If that fails, there will be another. The goal isn't to prove anything definitively. The goal is to create enough doubt, enough suspicion, that even if I'm cleared, I'm never fully trusted again.

He waited, watching, analysing, calculating. Danzō had revealed the first piece of his evidence, the Hashirama cell allegation. But Renjiro knew there would be more, that Danzō had likely prepared a cascade of accusations designed to overwhelm and confuse. He would reveal them one by one, each new piece of "evidence" building on the last, until the room was so saturated with suspicion that no one could see clearly.
