Lucian ate before dawn and crossed an already crowded section of Caldris to reach the South Freight public cemetery as the registration clerks opened their windows.
The cemetery occupied three terraces between a workers' market and a canal. Its oldest stones stood on the highest ground. Newer sections extended behind them in orderly rows divided by species, faith, family ownership, and public use. Resurrection alcoves had been built into a stone hall near the main gate so returning adventurers did not appear among ordinary mourners.
Lucian presented his visitor record.
"Current selection is the starter village churchyard." the clerk said. "Do you want this site registered as an option or selected immediately?"
"Selected."
