Chapter 44: The Shadow Beneath the Throne

The night didn't end with silence.

It ended with alarms.

Across the capital, warning sigils flared red as the forbidden weapon pulsed again—stronger this time. Towers trembled. Soldiers who had barely finished celebrating rushed back into formation.

X was already moving.

"Report," he said sharply as he descended into the war chamber.

Kaido slammed a blood-stained gauntlet onto the table. "Enemy shadows breached the outer archives. Not an army—precision units."

"Not an attack," Akira added. "A retrieval."

X's eyes narrowed. "He's not advancing."

"He's preparing," Seraphina said quietly.

Before anyone could respond, the chamber lights flickered—then died.

Darkness folded inward.

A presence arrived.

Not physically.

But unmistakably.

> "You defend my leftovers well, heir."

The Supreme Commander's voice echoed from everywhere and nowhere at once.

Weapons were drawn instantly. Veil vanished into shadow. Duskblade stepped half a pace in front of X.

X raised a hand.

"Show yourself."

A figure formed in the air—partial, unstable, made of layered shadow and fractured light.

Not fully manifested.

Not yet.

> "Still standing after awakening that blood," the Supreme Commander said.

"Impressive. Your ancestors screamed louder."

Kaido growled. "Say the word, X."

X didn't blink. "Why are you really here?"

The shadow tilted its head.

> "To remind you of your place."

The chamber walls cracked.

A pressure descended—heavy, suffocating. Several soldiers dropped to one knee. Even Kaido grimaced.

X stepped forward.

The pressure broke.

Phoenix-gold veins flared across his arm—not fully unleashed, but enough.

The shadow recoiled slightly.

Just slightly.

X noticed.

"So that's it," X said calmly. "You can threaten everyone else."

"But not me."

Silence.

Then laughter—low, bitter.

> "You feel it, don't you?"

"The gap."

X's gaze hardened. "I feel desperation."

The Supreme Commander's projection sharpened.

> "Your family built the Throne.

They crowned kings.

And beneath all of it—

they hammered Nails."

The shadow's form flickered, revealing scars—old, ritual-etched, deliberate.

> "I was one of them."

Seraphina whispered, "A Nail…"

X understood instantly.

Not royalty.

Not chosen.

A survivor.

"You stole power," X said.

> "I carried what you wasted," the Supreme Commander snapped.

"Your blood was worshipped. Mine was used."

The forbidden weapon pulsed again—hard enough to crack the war table in half.

Outside, thunder roared unnaturally.

Eira shouted, "X—energy readings are spiking continent-wide!"

The Supreme Commander's voice lowered.

> "That weapon was never meant to destroy the world."

"It was built to silence bloodlines like yours."

The shadow leaned closer.

> "To make gods bleed."

X's aura surged—not explosively, but controlled.

Calm.

Deadly.

"And yet," X said, "you still can't face me directly."

A pause.

The shadow trembled.

> "Not yet."

The projection shattered.

Darkness fled the chamber.

Alarms resumed.

Breathing returned.

Kaido exhaled slowly. "He backed off."

"No," X replied. "He measured."

X turned toward the balcony overlooking the city. The sky was split with red-black lightning where the forbidden weapon pulsed in the distance.

He clenched his fist.

Phoenix fire and Blood Eater shadow twisted together—stable now.

Evolving.

"If a Nail climbed this high," X said quietly,

"then my blood can go higher."

Seraphina looked at him. "Higher than your ancestors?"

X didn't answer immediately.

He watched the sky.

"Higher than the Throne itself."

Far away, unseen, the Supreme Commander whispered to the storm:

> "You are not the first heir."

The forbidden weapon pulsed again.

Stronger.

The war had crossed its point of no return.
