Chapter 123 - Hold On

In underground shelters across the world, people watched the battle unfold on salvaged screens. The footage was raw. Unedited. Stark's suit was broadcasting everything.

"He's losing," a woman in London whispered. Her children huddled close. "Iron Man is losing."

"No." Her husband pointed at the screen. "Look closer. He's lasting longer than he should. That monster should have killed him by now."

In a Tokyo shelter, an elderly man studied the fight with sharp eyes. "The armored one fights with purpose. Every move has meaning. He's not trying to win. He's trying to survive."

"What's the difference?" a young woman asked.

"Survival buys time. Time allows plans to unfold." The old man smiled slightly. "This is not a warrior's battle. This is a strategist's game."

In New York's deepest bunker, military analysts watched with professional interest.

"Stark's combat efficiency is dropping," one officer noted. "Power output down 47%. Armor integrity at 23%. He should retreat."

"He can't." Another officer pointed to Pepper's rescue. "He just burned his escape option saving the woman. He's committed now."

"Then he's dead."

"Maybe. Or maybe he knows something we don't."

The analyst pulled up tactical data from sensors scattered across Cairo. Her eyes widened. "Sir. Energy readings across the city are spiking. Multiple locations. All synchronized."

"Synchronized how?"

"Like they're building toward something. A convergence point." She checked timestamps. "And it's all timed to... oh."

"What?"

"Every spike started exactly when Stark rescued the woman. He's been counting down this whole time."

Back in the battle, Tony absorbed another devastating blow. His chest plate cracked. The arc reactor beneath flickered.

'Fifteen seconds. Just fifteen more seconds until convergence. Can I last that long?'

Apocalypse sensed victory. He pressed harder. Faster. Each attack designed to break bones and shatter armor.

Tony's quantum multiplicity ability activated again. Involuntary this time. His body's survival instinct kicking in.

He existed in three states simultaneously. Each one taking a different action. Dodging. Blocking. Countering.

'This power is growing. Unstable. But useful. My species adapting to extreme threat.'

Apocalypse's fist passed through one version of Tony. Hit another. Missed the third.

"You cannot hide in probability fields forever!" Apocalypse roared. "I will drag you back to singular existence and crush you!"

He released another Celestial energy pulse. This one targeted quantum signatures specifically. Designed to collapse probability states.

Tony's three versions slammed back together. The forced collapse was agonizing. Like being torn apart and reassembled in the same instant.

He screamed. Couldn't help it. The pain was beyond anything physical.

'Ten seconds. Hold on. Just ten more seconds.'

Tony cast a desperate spell. One the Ancient One had taught him for emergencies. Temporal dilation within a limited space.

Time slowed in a ten-foot bubble around him. Not stopped. Just slowed. Enough to give him a fraction more reaction time.

Apocalypse moved through it like it wasn't there. His Celestial enhancements made him partially immune to temporal manipulation.

"Clever. But insufficient." He grabbed Tony's arm. Squeezed until the armor crumpled. Bones underneath cracked.

Tony bit back another scream. Used his free hand to channel raw Starktonium energy. Point-blank blast directly into Apocalypse's face.

Boom!

The explosion was massive. Both of them were thrown apart by the force.

Tony landed hard. His arm hung useless. Broken in three places. His healing factor worked but slowly. Too slowly.

'Five seconds. Almost there. Come on. Hold together.'
