Tony woke slowly. His mind felt foggy. Distant. Like he was swimming up from deep water toward the surface.
Pain hit him first. Dull. Manageable. But present. His entire body ached. Muscles. Bones. Even his cells seemed to hurt.
'Where am I? What happened?'
Memory flooded back. The battle. Apocalypse. The Anti-Apocalypse armor. The four Infinity echoes burning out. Stage 2 evolution. Victory. Then collapse.
'I won. We won. Apocalypse is dead.'
Tony's eyes opened slowly. Bright light made him squint. His vision adjusted. He was in a medical tent. White canvas walls. Basic equipment. Field hospital setup.
Someone was holding his hand.
He turned his head carefully. Pepper sat beside his bed. Her eyes were closed. She'd fallen asleep in the chair. Her hand gripped his tightly like she was afraid he'd disappear if she let go.
She was still wearing the Mark Sanctuary armor. Partially retracted. Enough to let her hands and face be free. But the rest remained. Protecting her.
Tony's gaze moved to her stomach. The slight swell was visible even through the armor. Eight months pregnant. With his child.
'A father. I'm going to be a father.'
The thought was overwhelming. Terrifying. Beautiful. All at once.
He squeezed her hand gently. "Pepper."
Her eyes snapped open immediately. Wide. Shocked. Then filled with tears.
"Tony!" She leaned forward. Her free hand touched his face. "You're awake. Oh God, you're awake."
"How long was I out?"
"Eighteen hours. Doctor Strange said you'd wake when your body finished healing." Tears ran down her cheeks. "I thought... when you collapsed... I thought I'd lost you."
"I'm hard to kill." Tony tried to smile. His face hurt. "Comes with the species upgrade."
Pepper laughed. It came out more like a sob. "Don't joke. Not about this. You almost died. I watched you almost die."
"But I didn't." Tony's voice was gentle. "I'm here. I'm alive. And so are you. That's what matters."
She leaned down and pressed her forehead against his. "You idiot. You beautiful, brilliant idiot. You gave up your advantage for me. Sacrificed your plan's best chance because of me and...our child."
"Of course I did." Tony's voice was steady. "Some things are more important than winning. You're one of them. Our child is one of them."
Pepper pulled back slightly. Her eyes searched his face. "You know. About the baby."
"Apocalypse told me. During the fight. Used it as leverage." Tony's hand moved to her stomach. Rested there gently. "Eight months. You've been carrying our child for eight months and I didn't know."
"I tried to tell you." Pepper's voice broke. "Before you locked yourself away. Before you disappeared. But there was never time. Never the right moment."
"I know. It's my fault. I was so focused on becoming strong enough to face threats I knew were coming that I forgot about the present. Forgot about you. I'm sorry."
"Don't." She covered his hand with hers. "Don't apologize. You saved the world. Saved billions of people. Saved our child. That's what matters."
Tony wanted to argue. Wanted to say he should have done better. Should have made time. But the tent's entrance opened before he could speak.
Doctor Strange entered. His expression showed relief. "You're awake. Good. I was beginning to worry the healing process was taking too long."
"How bad was it?" Tony asked.
"Bad enough that anyone else would have died. Your left arm was gone below the elbow. Your ribs were crushed. One lung collapsed. Multiple internal injuries. Blood loss that should have been fatal." Strange sat in another chair. "Your new enhanced healing factor saved you. But it took time. More time than I expected."
'Stage 2 evolution.'Tony thought. 'My body was evolving while healing. That slowed everything down.'
"I understand." Tony nodded.
"You have clearly become different in power. I'm curious, what can you do now that you couldn't before?" Strange asked.
Tony hesitated. He didn't want to reveal everything. Didn't want people knowing the full extent of his abilities. That knowledge could be dangerous. Could paint a target on him. On Earth.
'Need to be careful. Share enough to satisfy curiosity but not everything. Keep some cards hidden. Always keep some cards hidden.'
"I'm stronger. Faster. My abilities are more stable. Energy absorption is better." Tony's voice was measured. "Nothing too dramatic. Just incremental improvements."
Strange studied him. His eyes showed he knew Tony was holding back. But he didn't push. "Fair enough. Your secrets are your own. Just know that if something goes wrong with your... training, I'm here to help."
"I know. Thank you."
Strange stood. "I'll let the others know you're awake. They've been waiting anxiously."
He left the tent. Pepper looked at Tony. "You didn't tell him everything."
"No." Tony admitted. "And I won't. Not to him. Not to anyone. My abilities are my business. The less people know, the safer everyone is."
"Even me?" Pepper asked quietly.
Tony met her eyes. "You know I'm Ultron. Or was trying to be Ultron. Apparently the world decided on Iron Man instead."
Pepper smiled slightly. "That name did catch on faster than you expected. News outlets. Social media. Everyone started calling you Iron Man after New York."
"Figures." Tony sighed. "I wanted Ultron. Sounded more imposing. But Iron Man it is, I guess. Can't fight public opinion."
"It's a good name." Pepper's thumb rubbed circles on his hand. "Strong. Heroic. It suits you."
"Maybe." Tony changed the subject. "You know I'm Iron Man. You know I have powers. But the specifics of what I can do, how I got them, the process. That stays secret."
"Why the secrecy?" Pepper asked.
"Because knowledge is power. And power makes people nervous." Tony's voice was serious. "If they knew I was constantly evolving, getting stronger with every threat, they'd see me as a potential danger. Better they think I'm just a guy in a really advanced suit with some unexplained abilities."
Pepper nodded slowly. "I understand. It's better that way."
"This doesn't mean I don't trust you, you know? We have mind readers here so you can understand." Tony held her hand and she just smiled.
The tent entrance opened again. Captain America entered. His expression showed relief when he saw Tony awake.
