A knock on the door tore me away from my calculations, making me feel annoyed—after dinner, I had warned everyone that I would be busy in the basement and not to disturb me unless absolutely necessary.
"Come in," I said, simultaneously deactivating the lock with a small burst of chakra.
"Ryo-kun, Shenesu is here with something important and urgent," Saya peeked inside. "Can you spare some time?"
"Send him in," I said after a moment's thought, waving my hand. "There's no need to bother me unless it's really important. My uncle never bothers me unless it's urgent, and if he's come this late, it must be something serious."
While she was gone, I tidied up my desk, sorting through the piles of scrolls and putting them in the appropriate drawers and shelves, turned on the overhead light, and moved to the armchair next to the small sofa in the corner.
"Ryo-kun, hello," nodded the tired head of Nara, dressed in the standard jonin uniform, 'sorry to bother you so late, but it's important.
"Yes, of course,' I waved him off, "what's so urgent?
"We've lost contact with the jonin team," he said, sinking onto the sofa, "and now we need to send someone to clarify the situation and return the bodies, if possible, but the union only has four free jonin in total, which will clearly not be enough against those who took out an entire team.
"What kind of mission is it?" I raised my eyebrow in surprise.
"Just a routine escort for a trader visiting business partners," he explained. "Yoru Sauri has been hiring our ninja for several years now, and so far there haven't been any problems, except for the usual bandits and a few nukenin, which our experienced and well-coordinated fighters were able to handle on their own without any injuries.
"Where does the client live?
"The Land of Swamps.
"A real shithole you have to reach by ship," I couldn't resist a sarcastic remark, "and where are you going to find enemies there capable of dealing with three well-coordinated jonin from a great village?
"That's what we need to find out," my uncle frowned.
"Sending me to that godforsaken place," I rolled my eyes.
With all the possible delays, it'll take a week and a half just to get there, and we'll be lucky if we can manage it in a month.
"Exactly," Shenesu nodded seriously, "there's no one else to send, and we can't afford to lose any more jonins.
