Bang!
A cloud of dust and a bitter scent of smoke filled the clearing. The massive silhouette of Gamabunta folded in on itself, then with a disgruntled croak the great toad vanished back into the summoning world. At the same instant, Namikaze Minato, still standing with the infant wrapped against his chest, vanished in a ripple of light, taking the Nine-Tails with him.
Senmei Asahi, Sarutobi Hiruzen, and the remainder of the sealing squad watched the space where they had stood collapse into silence.
'He took it…' Hiruzen's hands trembled despite his effort to appear steady. The old Hokage's face was drained of colour as he stared at the spot Minato had occupied. A thousand calculations and possibilities flashed through his mind and died.
"Sandaime-sama!" Asahi's voice cut through the stillness, grounding him. He stepped forward and placed a steadying hand near Hiruzen's sleeve.
"Ah!" Hiruzen blinked, forcing himself to the present. "Everyone! Spread out! Find where the Fourth Hokage went. Pinpoint him."
The squads scattered, chakra-sensing and tracking in practiced, efficient motions. The village still trembled with aftershocks; fires licked at shattered shingle and splintered beams as medics and rescue teams rushed to the wounded.
Not far outside the broken rim of Konoha, beyond where the last flames still hissed, Minato's figure snapped into being. He had already prepared the ritual space, an altar of excruciating intent, stones arranged and etched with sealing formulas, lines of chalk and chakra forming a precise cage.
There, Uzumaki Kushina knelt, pale and shaking, the crimson of her hair muddied with ash. Her breathing was shallow, every intake a struggle against the emptiness left by the Nine-Tails' removal. Beside her, their newborn lay sleeping in a swaddled bundle, small fists curled and face flushed with new life.
Minato's hand trembled as he set the child on the altar. Even at a distance, Hiruzen and Asahi could feel the exquisite, terrible charge of fate gathered in that place.
"Kushina—" Minato's voice broke for the barest fraction of a second. He composed himself, then breathed again, eyes steady with a resolve that was almost luminous. 'If there is a path that lets her live longer, if there is a chance for our son, then take it.'
Kushina opened her eyes. Despite the blood on her lips and the pallor of death edging her cheeks, she smiled at Minato with a tenderness that steadied him. "Minato… I can feel it loosening. If I have to go, I want to drag it away with me. I'll buy time, enough for you to protect him, to make sure he has a future."
She coughed, and a hot splatter of red painted the stone near her. Her hands trembled as she formed a faint seal in the air.
Sealing Jutsu ∙ Adamantine Sealing Chains
A chain of living chakra erupted from Kushina's body like braided light. The links struck into the ground and recoiled, twining around the Nine-Tails' flank as if the earth itself had found new fingers. The beast struggled, a rage-filled quake that rattled the stones beneath their feet. It was heavily restrained, more by Kushina's iron will than by the fragile threads of her remaining life.
She gasped. "I'm sorry… Naruto," she whispered. Her lips curved toward the infant. "I'm sorry I—"
"Don't say that." Minato told her firmly, cutting through the spiralling despair with the one calm voice he could manufacture. He carefully lifted Naruto into his arms and held the child to Kushina's forehead. The new father's fingers were steady, but his eyes were glassy with unshed tears.
'If she dies here, then it ends.' Minato thought. 'But if I can place her chakra into him, if I can give him time, however brief, then she will still live as part of him.'
Kushina stared at him, confusion and hope wrestling across her features. "Minato… what are you planning?"
Minato swallowed. The words he spoke tightened the air like a blade. "I will seal your chakra into Naruto, and bind him with the Eight Trigrams Seal. I will then use the only tool I have left to hold the Nine-Tails, no half measures. I will use the Reaper Death Seal and pay the cost."
Kushina's hands clenched in trembling protest. "No, no, Minato! You cannot take your life for this. Don't make that choice for me. I do not want you to die, to leave Naruto without a father!"
Minato looked down at their son for a long beat, then back to Kushina. The quiet in his voice made the words worse.
"Leaving the village to suffer because we save ourselves is cowardice." he said. "You know what losing a country is like, Kushina. You know what it does to the children left behind. I cannot let that be our son's fate. If I perish, so be it, but not uselessly. If my death seals this darkness away, then I will go willingly."
Kushina's face crumpled as the truth landed. She had known the world was cruel; she had not expected this price. She tried to speak, to argue, to bargain with the inevitable, but breath failed across her lips.
Minato turned and began the hand seals. The night air around them thinned as if in respect, charged with the gravity of what was being offered. As the seals tightened, a shadow gathered behind him, a shape like the silhouette of old, endless judgment.
Sealing Jutsu ∙ Reaper Death Seal!
The outline of the Shinigami, ancient judge and collector, materialised faintly, eyes empty and terrible. It hovered, a presence of finality. Its shadow cast a long bar across the earth and touched each of them with a chill that made the heart feel too large for the chest.
"Please," Minato whispered to Kushina, voice fierce with suppressed pleading, "trust me. Let me put your chakra into our son. Let him carry your strength. I will bind him and then I will give the rest of me to end this. Believe in him, in us."
For a long breath Kushina did not move. Then, with a strangled sob, she extended her palms and let what remained of her chakra spill into the altar. Threads of warm, living red poured, bright and intricate, spiralling into Naruto like a river entering a lake.
Minato's hands glowed as he guided Kushina's essence, compressing the swirl into a lattice and weaving the famous seal around the infant's abdomen, an intricate pattern that hummed with the power of an entire clan.
Eight Trigrams Seal!
The seal took, a living knot of protection and restraint, and Naruto's chest rose and fell as the small life absorbed the weight of ancient jutsu.
Kushina smiled, faintly. "If… if you can do this, Minato, then promise me one thing. Please, promise me he will not be used as a weapon. Promise me you will guard his heart."
Tears tracked down Minato's face. He bent and pressed his forehead to hers, answering with a whisper: "I promise."
Far beyond, Hiruzen and Asahi had found the barrier that enclosed the sacrificial space. Through the barrier's pale membrane, they could see the mountain of a beast crouched and bound, and the small, luminous altar below it. Golden chakra-chains braided around the Nine-Tails' shoulders like wound rope. The sight of Minato, Kushina, and the infant within the ring of fate made both of them still.
"Could that be… the Reaper Death Seal?" Hiruzen murmured, tone thick with disbelief and dread.
"Reaper Death Seal…" Asahi echoed under his breath.
Hiruzen's hand hovered against the barrier. His fingers could not break through; trying would risk disrupting the ritual and injuring the caster. He closed his eyes for a long moment and steadied himself.
Asahi readied himself, "I will try breaking the barrier."
"We cannot force our way in." Hiruzen told Asahi quietly. "If we smash the barrier, it will affect the caster. We will unmake whatever Minato is attempting. He must be allowed to finish this as he chose."
Asahi swallowed hard. Even with all his strength, all his planning, this was something he still could not interfere with. The weight of helplessness settled in his gut like cold stone.
'Farewell, Namikaze Minato.' Asahi thought, gaze fixed on the ritual beyond the barrier. 'May the future you buy with your life be worth the price.'
