Chapter 30 - Ch.30: Under the Stars

The city lights reflected against the windows as Raven's car moved through the streets of Chicago.

Eleanor sat beside her, quietly watching the city pass by.

She had been trying to figure out where they were going since they left.

Raven hadn't given her a single clue.

"You know," Eleanor said, breaking the silence, "you're terrible at giving directions."

Raven chuckled.

"You'll find out soon enough."

"That's what you've been saying for the past twenty minutes."

"Patience."

Eleanor smiled.

"I don't have much."

"I've noticed."

---

The car finally stopped in front of a discreet black entrance.

Eleanor looked up.

There was no large sign.

No crowd.

No paparazzi.

Just a small golden emblem beside the door.

Eleanor's eyes widened.

"This place…"

Raven stepped out.

"You know it?"

"Everyone knows it."

The restaurant was one of the most exclusive restaurants in Chicago.

Membership was private.

Reservations were nearly impossible.

And tonight, the entire upper floor had been reserved for them.

Eleanor stared at Raven.

"You reserved this entire place?"

"I wanted privacy."

"You could have just asked for a table."

"I didn't want a table."

Eleanor smiled.

"What did you want?"

Raven looked at her.

"Tonight."

---

Their dinner was elegant but surprisingly relaxed.

They talked about everything except business.

Eleanor learned that Raven hated overly sweet desserts.

Raven discovered that Eleanor loved strawberries.

Eleanor laughed when Raven admitted she couldn't dance.

"You don't know how to dance?"

"No."

"Not even a little?"

"No."

Eleanor shook her head.

"The mighty Raven doesn't know how to dance."

Raven smiled.

"Apparently not."

For the first time, Eleanor saw the woman beneath the intimidating reputation.

Not the CEO.

Not the mysterious masked Alpha.

Just Raven.

---

After dinner, Raven drove again. On the drive up the hill, as the city lights began to thin behind them, she finally reached up and removed her mask, setting it carefully in the console between them.

Eleanor looked at her curiously.

"Where are we going now?"

"Somewhere important."

"Important?"

"Yes."

The city slowly disappeared behind them.

The roads became quieter.

The lights became fewer.

Eventually, Raven turned onto a narrow road leading toward the hills outside the city.

Eleanor looked around.

"Where are we?"

Raven smiled.

"Wait."

---

The car stopped.

Raven stepped out and walked around to Eleanor's side.

She opened the door.

Eleanor stepped out.

And stopped.

The view was breathtaking.

Chicago stretched across the distance.

The skyline shimmered beneath the night sky.

Stars were scattered above them.

A cool breeze moved through the trees.

Eleanor looked around.

"This is beautiful."

Raven stood beside her.

"I used to come here when I was little."

Eleanor looked at her.

"With your mother?"

Raven nodded.

"Sometimes."

She walked toward the edge of the hill.

"My mother used to bring me here when everything became too loud."

Eleanor followed.

"She sounds wonderful."

"She was."

Raven's voice softened.

"She would tell me that no matter how powerful someone became, they still needed somewhere they could breathe."

Eleanor looked at her.

"Is this where you came after everything happened?"

Raven was silent.

"Sometimes."

Eleanor didn't push.

Instead, she stepped closer.

"Thank you for bringing me here."

Raven looked at her.

"I've never brought anyone here before."

Eleanor's heart skipped.

"Really?"

Raven shook her head.

"No."

The words hung between them.

The wind moved gently around them.

Eleanor looked at Raven's mask.

"Can I ask you something?"

"Yes."

"Why do you always wear it?"

Raven looked away.

"Because it makes me feel safe."

Eleanor nodded.

"I understand."

Raven looked back at her.

"You don't want to see what's underneath?"

Eleanor smiled.

"I already have."

Raven's expression softened.

"I know."

"And I still think you're beautiful."

Raven went completely still.

Nobody had ever said those words to her like that.

Not without wanting something.

Not without fear.

Just honesty.

"Eleanor…"

"Yes?"

Raven stepped closer.

Neither woman moved away.

Their eyes met.

Eleanor could hear her own heartbeat.

Raven slowly reached for her hand.

Their fingers intertwined.

"Tell me to stop," Raven whispered.

Eleanor's heart raced.

"I don't want you to."

Raven leaned closer.

Slowly.

Giving Eleanor every opportunity to move away.

She didn't.

Their lips met.

Softly.

Tentatively.

Their first kiss wasn't rushed.

It was gentle.

Warm.

Almost unreal.

Eleanor's hand rested against Raven's chest.

Raven's fingers tightened gently around hers.

For a few seconds, the world disappeared.

No business.

No revenge.

No family secrets.

No masks.

Just them.

When they finally pulled apart, Eleanor smiled.

Raven rested her forehead against hers.

"I've wanted to do that for a while."

Eleanor laughed softly.

"You could have said something."

"I wasn't sure."

"About what?"

"Whether you wanted me."

Eleanor smiled.

"I do."

Raven's heart skipped.

She leaned closer again, but this time Eleanor met her halfway.

Their second kiss was even softer.

When they finally separated, Eleanor looked toward the city.

"Tonight feels like a dream."

Raven looked at her.

"Maybe we shouldn't wake up yet."

Eleanor smiled.

"Maybe not."

They stood together beneath the stars.

For once, Raven wasn't thinking about Jeff.

She wasn't thinking about revenge.

She wasn't thinking about the secrets hidden inside the final property.

For one night,

she simply allowed herself to be happy.

And Eleanor didn't know that the woman standing beside her was carrying a past that could change everything.

But tonight wasn't about the past.

Tonight belonged to them.

To be continued…
