Chapter 31 - moat around wall

The sun rose over the settlement like a fiery crown, casting long shadows across the silver dunes that stretched endlessly into the horizon. The flat world, a patchwork of stitched-together landscapes from countless universes, seemed deceptively calm in the morning light. But the residents of the Kim settlement knew better. The system ping that had echoed in every mind at dawn was a stark reminder: thirty days until the First Incursion. Phase one would bring probes—shadow-avatars that slithered through cracks in reality, testing defenses and corrupting the weak. Then the waves: star-warped beasts, eldritch horrors descending from tearing skies, bringing catastrophe that could level civilizations.

Minho Kim, the elder brother, stood at the base of the perimeter wall, his muscular frame tense as he inspected the fused stone. His body was a map of scars—three massive horizontal gashes across his torso from a colossal silhouette in a past timeline, hundreds of minor marks from survival scenarios that had hardened him into the ultra survivor he was. His void-blades hung at his hips, ready for any threat. "This wall is our first line," he said to himself, his voice low and gravelly. "But it's passive. We need teeth—turrets that bite back. And a moat to slow the tide."

Junha, his younger brother, approached, the emerald glow of his Dreamwalker system panel flickering in his vision. "Hyung, the engineers from Elias's camp are ready. Thorne says the generators can power eight turrets. We start with the mechanics, then the moat. Beastmen for labor—wolves dig fast."

Minho nodded, cracking his knuckles. "Good. Rally them. No one's idle today. The constellations won't wait."

The settlement was already alive with activity. Hyejin, their mother, a mature beauty with modest attire and a warm smile, moved between the cookfires in the central square, handing out mugs of herb-infused tea. "Drink this, dears," she said to a group of tired settlers. "It'll keep your strength up for the work ahead. We all need to pull together."

Suho, their father, the ex-gangster with a no-nonsense demeanor, patrolled the area, his rifle slung over his shoulder. "Eyes open," he barked to a mixed patrol of human guards and wolf-kin sentries. "The stars are stirring. No slacking, or you'll answer to me."

Mi-young, the cunning little sister, bounded through the crowd, her sand-devourer butterflies fluttering around her like a protective cloud. "Oppas! Mochi Supreme scouted the dunes—no threats yet!" The lead butterfly projected a holographic map, showing clear horizons.

Jihoon, the young builder with Architect's Touch, was already at the workshop, golden threads weaving from his palms as he prepared turret mounts on the wall. "Hyungs, I've outlined eight positions—spaced for overlapping fire. Thorne's team is unpacking the generators from the ruins. Pre-reset tech—fusion cores that convert essence shards to plasma."

Minho clapped him on the shoulder. "Perfect. Get Elias and Thorne. We begin."

The call went out—rabbit runners dashing between apartments, fox illusionists projecting announcements: "All to the square! Defense build—turrets and moat!"

The crowd gathered: three hundred souls—humans from the ruins and Mara's group, beastmen allies. Elias stood front, Thorne beside him. Yuri leaned nearby, tails swaying.

Minho on the dais: "Thirty days to incursion. Probes first, waves after. I've seen the end—won't happen here. Build turrets—essence-powered. Engineers lead. Moat—deep, trapped. Everyone works."

Junha: "Laws: Unity, Contribution, Justice, Defense. Incursion: Shadows corrupt, horrors descend. Fight as one."

Assignments: Engineers to workshop, diggers to moat.

Workshop: Thorne: "Generators—feed shards, output plasma. Kara, wiring. Finn, barrels."

Jihoon: "Fuse mounts."

First turret: Assembly, test-fire—success.

Moat: Ryn: "Dig deep!"

Ssilith: "Venom spikes."

Yuri: "Illusions hide us."

Hyejin: "Eat—strength!"

Evening meeting: Brothers explain laws, incursion details.
