Chapter 169 - Chapter 165: Survived the god

She had it all planned out.

From the very moment she had tried to collect on her end of the bargain, only to be met with a surprise from that arrogant, non-mortal entity that she did not have a word to classify. The Fairy Queen had been watching. She had been thinking. She had been meticulously planning how best to seize absolute control from those two insufferable monarchs, Eliot and Margo.

And then, a miracle had occurred. The total disappearance of magic from the universe. Oh, what a sublime boon that had been for her and her people! With the grand wellsprings dried up, Fillory had become perfectly ripe for the taking. Without their precious spells and whimsical parlor tricks, those two royal children had absolutely no way to oppose her rule. The throne room of Whitespire was practically hers, an easy picking just waiting to be harvested.

But, of course, fate always has a sickening twist in store. Fate always denies an easy victory.

It had all come crashing down because of him. That abomination, Kai Parker. The two-faced interloper who had arrogantly denied her the chance to take what was rightfully owed to her. Worse still, he had somehow, through some twisted display of impossible power, granted magic back to her enemies. He had rewritten the cosmic rules and handed power right back into the hands of those insufferable ingrates.

That alone had forestalled her plans, but the true insult had come later. They had tricked her. They had found her private breeding ground here in Fillory. Those merciless savages had practically kidnapped her defenseless, unhatched offspring, treating her royal lineage like common livestock and threatening to eat them if she did not comply with their demands.

The memory alone made the Queen's jaw tighten, a cold, elegant fury washing over her features. As if that monstrous extortion wasn't enough, they had forced her into a humiliating public compromise. They had coerced her into gifting her most treasured possession, the bathtub to the masses, stripping away her secrecy and forcing her to reveal her hand, and the existence of all fairies, to the common Fillorian people.

Yet, those human fools failed to realize that every decree they forced upon her was a double-edged sword. And the Queen knew exactly how to sharpen both sides.

The arrival of the fairies had thrown the already volatile kingdom into utter chaos. The citizens of Fillory were already deeply tense, their lives disrupted by the floating islanders and the ruthless pillaging and plundering she had secretly ordered the people of the floating islands to carry out across the countryside. The commoners were bleeding, their crops ruined and their livelihoods shattered, and they were looking for someone to blame.

They just needed a gentle push in the right direction.

Standing in the shadowy recesses of the Whitespire courtyard, the Fairy Queen watched a gathering of angry, impoverished peasants whispering violently near the castle gates. A slow, chilling smile touched her lips, and her eyes narrowed into two slits of pure, calculated malice.

It was so deliciously simple to shift the narrative. All it took was a few quiet words passed through the servants, a little venomous whispering in the taverns about how the High Kings were the ones truly at fault. It was Eliot and Margo who had invited the floaters whose islands had fell due to the disappearance of magic. It was the crown that had brought the invisible, plundering terrors directly to Fillory's doorstep.

The strategy was working beautifully. The resentment brewing in the streets was no longer just aimed at the floaters, it was aiming straight for the throne. The Fillorian people didn't just want answers anymore; they wanted retribution against their own rulers. And the Queen was more than happy to help them burn the kingdom down to get it.

It had all been going perfectly according to her design, until she decided to approach the grand throne room where both Margo and Eliot were holding court.

She had been taking a slow, triumphant stroll through the castle corridors, ready to subtly observe her handiwork, when the air itself suddenly fractured. Without warning, a colossal, suffocating wave of pure panic and primal dread slammed into her essence. The vibrant colors of Whitespire's tapestries bled away in a single heartbeat, and the world took on a dead, uniform shade of grey as what looked to be shadow snow began to fall out of thin air.

It was not anything she had expected. The sheer, crushing malice of the feeling rooted the Fairy Queen on the spot. Her throat constricted violently; for a terrifying moment, she completely forgot how to breathe.

Fairies were creatures born entirely of magic. They were intricately in tune with the fundamental energy of the universe itself, capable of wielding it and feeling it freely, more so than almost any other creature in existence, save for a very noticeable few. And that exquisite sensitivity was exactly why this localized eruption was an absolute catastrophe for her kind. Not only she, but every single fairy currently hidden or stationed in Fillory either collapsed to the ground clutching their heads or became paralyzed, rooted in their spots as the ambient magical energy weighed down on them like a collapsing mountain. The pressure was so sickeningly absolute that she almost wanted to fade away into nothingness just to escape the terror.

Then, as suddenly as it had arrived, the suffocating sensation stopped. The gray haze lifted, and the shadow snow vanished into the ether.

The Queen stood trembling, gasping for the dry Fillorian air. A sensation of that magnitude wasn't something she would ever expect from a mortal wizard, or even a skilled witch. No, an aura that profoundly terrifying belonged only to the grand anomalies of existence, clear dragons, niffins and literal gods.

Her black eyes fixed on the massive doors to the throne room. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. Slowly, deliberately, she moved back. One step. Then another. And another. She turned away entirely, gripped by a sudden, paralyzing fear of the two monarchs sitting just beyond those doors.

Her thoughts spiraled into frantic, breathless panic as the lingering sensation of the dread increased her fear. 'Those two did that.' her mind screamed in absolute certainty. 'What exactly was that? What had they done, and just how had they achieved such a level of corrupted and vile magic?!' Believing that Eliot and Margo had just flexed an apocalyptic, dark god-like power to warn her, the Fairy Queen fled down the corridor in a desperate hurry, completely terrified.

Meanwhile, inside the throne room, the reality was entirely different.

Eliot and Margo were not basking in a display of dark majesty; they were sprawled across the floorboards, completely shattered. Having just endured the agonizing mental feedback of Kai being violently ripped from a pocket dimension and dumped back onto Earth, they had been hit with the absolute worst of the god's backlash. The pure phobia energy of Phobos had caked their skin in cold, frantic sweat right before the Unity Key link went completely dead.

With a weak, ragged groan, Eliot was the first to move, pushing himself up onto his elbows. Margo followed a second later, coughing as if she had just swallowed sand, her crown clattering uselessly against the stone as they finally, painfully, got up.

The agonizing energy that had just paralyzed the entire fairy population of Fillory hadn't been a deliberate spell; it was the raw, violent kinetic snap of the corrupted Unity Key link finally being severed.

The exact same psychic whiplash detonated in the minds of everyone connected. On the Muntjac, the crew collapsed over the rigging; at the estate, Julia fell to her knees clutching her temples; and back in the physical world's cottage, Josh, Alicia, and Marina were left shivering on the floor, soaked in a cold, phantom sweat.

In the Whitespire throne room, Margo and Eliot slowly oriented themselves, their brains vibrating with a colossal, splitting headache.

"Fucking hell," Margo groaned, pressing the heels of her palms into her eyes as she dragged herself up. "My head feels like it's been skull-fucked by a rampaging gnome with a grudge. What the actual shit was that?"

"I believe," Eliot wheezed, adjusting his crumpled vest with trembling fingers as he leaned heavily against the arm of his throne, "that was the sensory equivalent of drinking cheap tequila through your ears. I can taste my own thoughts, and they taste like copper and regret."

Suddenly, the air cracked open. Penny materialized in the center of the room, flanked by Kady, Quentin, Alice, and Poppy. The moment their boots hit the stone floor, the entire group let out a collective, synchronized groan, staggering under the weight of the lingering psychic backlash.

Penny looked the worst of them. A thick stream of dark blood was actively leaking from his right nostril. Because of his innate telepathy, his mind had acted like a satellite dish for the god's corrupted frequency, amplifying the horrific effects of Phobos's aura far more than anyone else.

"Son of a bitch," Penny snarled, wiping the blood with the back of his hand and instantly wincing as the movement aggravated the jackhammer pounding behind his eyes. "Next time Kai decides to play tag with a fucking deity, I'm cutting my own brain out."

Quentin didn't even say hello. He just staggered blindly toward the side table, grabbed a decanter of royal wine, ripped the stopper out with his teeth, and took a massive, desperate gulp. He didn't even swallow before Alice aggressively snatched the decanter right out of his hand, tilting her head back to gulp down a massive swig of her own, completely abandoning her usual clinical decorum.

"Well," Eliot noted, raising an eyebrow despite his own agony. "Good to see the pain hasn't ruined our collective coping mechanisms."

Margo rolled her eyes, swaying slightly as she stood up. "Welcome back, cunts. Glad to see you survived the mind-rape." Her sharp gaze then drifted past Quentin and locked onto the unfamiliar ginger woman standing awkwardly at the back. Margo's eyes narrowed. "Who the fuck is this?"

Poppy blinked, looking around at the sweaty, bleeding, wine-chugging disaster zone that was the Fillorian high court. She cleared her throat, adjusting her jacket. "Hi. I'm Poppy. I study dragons and apparently inherit front-row seats to cosmic horror shows. Are we... is this a bad time? Because honestly, seeing your faces, I'm guessing no? Wow. Okay then. Great energy in here."

Quentin, finally finding his footing, reached into his coat and dropped the Fourth Key onto the heavy table. Surprisingly, the ambient air remained completely still. There was no sudden drop in temperature, no terrifying whisper, and none of the plus-one wraiths that usually materialized out of the shadows the exact millisecond someone touched one of the keys.

"Well, look at that," Penny muttered, glaring at the quiet artifact. "At least the ghost stowaways decided to take a break. Small favors."

"I don't give a shit about the ghosts," Kady muttered, rubbing her temples as she leaned against a pillar. "I am so incredibly tired of gods trying to kill us. Can we go one Tuesday without a mythical entity trying to liquidate our assets?"

"Statistically? Unlikely," Eliot sighed.

The room fell into a tense, heavy silence as they all tried to process the lingering terror of what they had seen through the link, the terrifying agility of Phobos, the blue-fire dragon, and the absolute destruction of the pocket dimension.

Then, Alice set the wine decanter down with a heavy thud, her pale face turning incredibly grim as she looked around at the group.

"We're missing the biggest problem," Alice said, her voice shaking slightly. "The link snapped because the realm collapsed. Kai is still out there. Kai is still with the god."

Penny let out a harsh, ragged breath, wiping the last of the blood from his nose. "It was hungry. Like, fundamentally hollow and looking to erase anything in its path."

"We all felt it, Penny," Kady muttered, her arms crossed tight over her chest to stop the lingering tremors. "It felt like a walking grave."

Quentin shifted on his feet, his anxiety spiking as he stared at the floorboards. "Then how the hell is Kai supposed to survive that? He's powerful, sure, but we just saw a literal Greek deity drag him through three layers of a pocket dimension. He's alone out there!"

Eliot snorted loudly. Without a word, he turned on his heel, sauntering over to a completely different corner of the throne room. He bypassed the elegant wine decanters, bypassed the royal goblets, and reached deep into a hidden velvet-lined cabinet to pull out a massive, unlabelled bottle of dark rum. He held it up like a prized treasure, rocking slightly on his heels with a distinct sway.

"Why is the rum always hidden?" Margo muttered as she watched Elliot rip the cork out with his teeth and take a massive swig straight from the bottle.

Margo marched right over, snatched the bottle from his hand, and took an equally aggressive gulp, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand.

"Because I hide it from myself when I'm sad, Margo. Give it back." Elliot said.

Quentin stared at them, his jaw dropping in absolute disbelief. "What the hell is wrong with you two?! Your friend, our literal lifeline right now is currently being hunted by a cosmic manifestation of dread, and you're practicing your high-seas coping mechanisms?"

Margo let out a loud, mocking sigh, rolling her eyes so hard it looked painful. "Oh, relax and get that majestic dildo out of your ass, Q. This is Kai Parker we're talking about." She took another sip of the rum, gesturing wildly with her free hand. "The man is a cockroach. A highly offensive, sociopathic, unkillable cockroach that will actively outlive the nuclear winter and all other cockroaches. He'll be fine. Not a hundred percent fine, obviously, he's probably getting his teeth kicked in as we speak but he'll live."

"Exactly," Eliot chimed in, leaning against a pillar and tilting his head. "Besides, this is hardly the first god he's completely fucked up. Frankly, I'd be profoundly disappointed in his brand of toxic malignancy if he didn't find a way to cheat his way out of a divine execution."

Margo smirked, a wicked glint returning to her eyes. "Honestly? If the god gives him a little bit of a beating, it'll just make up for the absolute agony he just shoved into our chests with that stunt. A little cosmic karma is good for the soul."

Kady immediately nodded in solemn approval. "Yeah, actually. I can get behind that. Let the god break a few of his ribs first before he tricks him."

Quentin blinked and looked at Alice who shrugged, looking around the room at the completely unbothered monarchs and the vindictive nods. He deflated, rubbing his eyes. "Well... I guess. If you guys are that confident."

——-

Meanwhile, back on Earth and miles away from civilization, in the blinding, scorching expanse of the Sahara Desert, the silence was broken by a long, miserable groan.

Kai woke up with a start, his eyes snapping open as a massive, cavernous hunger gnawed at his dead stomach. He forced himself to sit upright, a shower of loose sand cascading off his tattered clothes. Every single molecule in his body felt like it had been run over by a freight train, explicitly designed by Ares.

"Ow," Kai wheezed, clutching his ribs. "Everything hurts. My knees hurt. My hair hurts. Why does my hair hurt?"

He groaned again, bracing his hands on a smooth sheet of freshly formed green glass to push himself up. But just as he was about to stand, a sudden, bizarrely intense urge washed over him. A violent spike of supernatural irritation hit him, and he had the overwhelming, instinctive desire to aggressively track down Margo and Eliot and make them suffer a mild inconvenience.

Kai paused, narrowing his eyes at a cactus in the distance. 'Someone is talking shit about me,' he thought with absolute, petty certainty. 'I don't know who, but the magical universe is whispering that Margo called me a pest, and I am highly offended.'

Then, a flicker of genuine panic and worry cut through his narcissism. He pressed a hand to his chest, realizing the Unity Key link was completely dark. 'Hopefully, the rest of them are okay,' he thought, his brow furrowing. 'That feedback loop was nasty. If Quentin died because his brain melted, I'm going to be so annoyed.'

A sharp, painful cramp in his abdomen brought him right back to reality. The hunger was clawing at his throat now, the Original Vampire instincts screaming for sustenance after draining his wellspring so thoroughly to trigger that banishment trap.

'Right. The squirt squad can wait. First, I need blood. A lot of blood. Like, an entire stable of camels or a very lost tour bus,' he thought comically, wiping sand from his lips.

He cracked his neck, shivering despite the desert heat as the reality of his situation settled in. "Fuck you, Phobos," Kai muttered into the wind, dusting off his charred sleeves. "And fuck the rest of your family tree."

He needed to be incredibly careful now. Surviving one Olympian was a fluke; if Ares was actively sending his kids to play repo-man for the Heka stone, the cosmic target on his back had just gotten a massive upgrade.

"Time to vanish," Kai muttered.

With a soft pop of displaced air, he teleported away from the glass-streaked wasteland, leaving the empty Sahara behind to find a snack.
