Episode 6: New Connections
"Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask and he will tell you the truth."
— Oscar Wilde
Black Rose stood before the mirror, studying her reflection.
She wore a short black dress that stopped just above her knees. A subtle slit revealed part of her legs, while the open back gave the otherwise simple dress an elegant edge. The fabric hugged her figure without appearing overly extravagant.
Her jewelry was minimal, and her makeup was equally restrained.
Her hair was neatly gathered into a bun.
The only thing that seemed slightly out of place was the pair of glasses resting on her nose.
They gave her an innocent, almost studious appearance.
Lander Spencer stood behind her, dressed in a black shirt and trousers.
"I see you like the dress," he said. "It fits you perfectly."
Black Rose smiled at her reflection.
"Of course. It is beautifully crafted, and I love beautiful dresses."
Lander folded his arms.
"I still don't understand why you want to go to that club. If you're looking for clients, I could come with you. You'd be surprised how quickly people become interested when they know who I am."
Black Rose turned away from the mirror.
"I don't want to depend on you for everything."
Lander raised an eyebrow.
"You've given me shelter and clothes because we're business partners, and I'm grateful for that. But I need to create my own path."
There was a brief silence.
"I hope you understand."
Lander nodded.
"I do."
He paused.
"Will you be available for Mr. Rico Alfredo's shipment tomorrow?"
"No."
Lander gave her a curious look.
"But I want to ask you something."
"Go ahead."
"Why don't you go to the club like most men? And besides me and the people you work with, especially the men and women around you, don't you have any friends outside your circle?"
Lander smiled faintly.
"I'm not most men. I'm Lander Spencer."
He adjusted his sleeve.
"I've established myself as one of the most important fashion designers in Sownsville. I don't make friends easily, especially when I'm working. I have a reputation to maintain."
He paused before adding,
"And I like my wife."
Black Rose smiled.
"Your wife?"
"Yes."
"She must be lucky."
Lander chuckled.
"She's a good woman. Dense sometimes, but a good person and a great mother."
"Wow."
Black Rose nodded.
"I think that's why we're good business partners."
She picked up her handbag.
"Anyway, wish me luck. I'm meeting Steve at the location I sent him."
"Good luck."
Black Rose smiled and left the room.
The servants opened the mansion's doors and gates for her.
She stepped outside and took a taxi to the meeting location.
---
Sunset Club
Steve Harper was already waiting beside his car when she arrived.
He looked at her and smiled.
"You look amazing."
He took her hand and kissed it politely before opening the car door for her.
"Thank you."
A short while later, they drove toward Sunset Club.
The club stood in one of the wealthiest parts of Sownsville.
From the outside, it looked more like a private palace than a nightclub.
Towering black doors guarded the entrance, while security personnel stood nearby, carefully observing everyone who approached.
Steve reached into his pocket and handed Black Rose a black mask.
"Put this on."
She looked at it.
"A mask?"
He put on his own.
"Everyone wears one."
Black Rose slowly covered her face.
As they approached the entrance, Steve lowered his voice.
"There is an informal rule here."
"What rule?"
"Whatever happens inside Sunset Club stays inside Sunset Club."
Black Rose looked at him.
"Everyone obeys it?"
"Everyone who wants to keep coming back."
The doors opened.
The atmosphere changed immediately.
Sunset Club was not simply a nightclub.
It was the biggest and most exclusive club in Sownsville, a place where wealthy businessmen, celebrities, influential figures and people with secrets came to disappear into the night.
Golden chandeliers hung above polished marble floors.
Purple and crimson lights swept across the crowded hall.
Music pulsed through the building while laughter, expensive perfume and the clinking of glasses filled the air.
Young people danced beneath the lights while others sat around tables, drinking and talking.
Black Rose looked around carefully.
Steve noticed.
"That's why I don't allow ordinary guests to use their phones."
"Why?"
"Privacy."
He pointed toward another section.
"Only VIPs are allowed to use their phones, and even they can only use them inside the private lounges."
He looked at her.
"That is why I asked you not to bring yours."
Black Rose nodded.
"Understood."
Steve looked at her dress.
"By the way, why didn't you wear the dress I ordered?"
Black Rose glanced down.
"I like this one."
She smiled.
"And it's unique."
Steve looked at her for a moment.
Then he smiled.
"You're certainly different."
He gestured toward the club.
"Since you're looking for a job, why don't you be my escort tonight? Tomorrow, I'll see if I can find something suitable for you."
Black Rose smiled.
"Of course, Mr. Steve Harper. I'm grateful for the opportunity. I won't misuse it."
Steve smiled back.
But behind his smile, another thought crossed his mind.
I hope she can handle what she sees tonight.
He glanced at her again.
If she can, perhaps I'll make her my woman.
"Come," he said.
"I'll introduce you properly."
They moved through the crowd.
The DJ controlled the music from a raised platform while several bartenders served drinks below.
Steve approached the bar.
Two men and a woman stood behind it.
The moment they saw him, they straightened.
"Good evening, Mr. Steve Harper."
"Good evening."
Steve gestured toward Black Rose.
"These are my staff. They're responsible for drinks and attending to the guests."
Black Rose nodded politely.
"Nice to meet you."
They returned the greeting.
Steve then led her toward a staircase.
They climbed several steps before reaching another set of doors.
Two heavily built bouncers stood outside.
The moment they saw Steve, they opened the doors.
Music drifted through the room, but it was softer than downstairs.
The VIP floor was spacious and elegant, with private lounges surrounding the main hall.
"Welcome to the VIP floor," Steve said.
Black Rose looked around.
"So this is where the important guests stay."
"Exactly."
He smiled.
"You're catching on."
He pointed toward several doors.
"Those are private rooms. People use them when they want privacy. Couples, business partners, wealthy clients... anyone who doesn't want to be disturbed."
Black Rose nodded.
Steve then began introducing her to some of the guests.
Several already knew him.
One of them immediately called out.
"Steve!"
Steve turned.
A man wearing a flamboyant rockstar outfit approached them. His hair was dyed several different colors.
"Jill."
Jill Rock grinned.
"Man, you're alive!"
Steve laughed.
"I was never dead."
"I heard you were poisoned."
"I was."
Jill shook his head.
"I thought you were still in the hospital."
"I was discharged yesterday."
Jill suddenly noticed Black Rose.
His eyes traveled over her dress.
Then he whistled.
"Who's this?"
Steve's expression changed slightly.
"Jill, this is Tanya."
He turned toward Black Rose.
"Tanya, this is Jill Rock. He's one of the most popular rockstars in Sownsville."
Jill smiled.
"Hello, beautiful. Can I get to know you?"
He extended his hand.
Before Black Rose could respond, Steve stepped between them.
"She is my partner tonight."
Jill raised both hands.
"Relax. I only wanted to talk to her."
Steve stared at him.
"Did you understand what I meant?"
Jill laughed.
"You said she's your partner tonight."
He grinned.
"That means I have a chance tomorrow."
Steve shook his head.
"You idiot."
He laughed.
"One of my favorite idiots, but still an idiot."
Jill placed a hand over his chest dramatically.
"That hurts, bro."
Steve rolled his eyes.
Jill looked at Black Rose.
"But seriously, if you're done with her, at least give me her number."
"Goodbye, Jill."
Steve took Black Rose by the hand.
"Come."
Jill laughed as he followed them.
They soon approached an older man surrounded by several guests.
The moment he saw Steve, his face lit up.
"Steve!"
Steve walked toward him.
"Mr. Cole."
"I thought you were in the hospital."
"I've been discharged."
Several people immediately began asking questions about his recovery.
Mr. Cole laughed.
"Good to see you back. Now, when is the next entertainment? We've been waiting."
Steve smiled.
"Soon. My staff are arranging it."
Mr. Cole noticed Black Rose.
His expression changed.
"And who is this?"
Steve looked at her.
"Tanya."
He paused.
"She is my woman tonight."
Several people exchanged amused glances.
One man laughed.
"You've never brought a woman here before. What's changed?"
Steve looked at Black Rose.
"She is unique."
Black Rose smiled politely.
Then a member of staff approached Steve and whispered something into his ear.
Steve nodded.
"I think your entertainment has arrived."
The lights dimmed.
A platform slowly rose from beneath the floor.
Music changed.
A masked woman appeared on the platform and began performing beneath the lights.
Other performers entered the room.
The atmosphere immediately became more provocative.
Some guests watched.
Others approached the performers.
Black Rose stood quietly beside Steve.
She noticed something immediately.
She was one of the few women in the room dressed conventionally.
She looked around.
The performers wore masks and revealing stage outfits, and several moved between guests while music filled the room.
Black Rose's expression remained calm.
But she was watching.
Not enjoying.
Observing.
She watched who approached whom.
She noticed which guests received special treatment.
She noticed which doors the performers disappeared behind.
She noticed which staff members seemed to know exactly what each VIP wanted.
This was not simply entertainment.
There was an entire system operating beneath the surface.
Steve looked at her.
"You okay?"
Black Rose nodded.
"I'm fine."
"If you're uncomfortable, I can take you to my office."
"No."
She glanced toward the stage.
"She dances well."
Steve studied her face.
"You're calmer than I expected."
Black Rose smiled faintly.
"I've seen stranger things."
The performance continued.
Eventually, another performer stepped onto a raised table and the guests gathered around.
Steve leaned toward Black Rose.
"I'm sorry you had to see this."
Black Rose frowned.
"Why?"
Steve looked toward the crowd.
"Because this is where Sunset Club becomes different from ordinary nightclubs."
He gestured toward the guests.
"Every week, we hold private competitions for our VIPs. The highest bidders receive exclusive privileges."
A staff member began distributing numbered cards to several guests.
The atmosphere became competitive.
Money started being called out.
One bid followed another.
Five million naira.
Seven million.
Eight million.
The room grew louder.
Steve watched with amusement.
Then someone shouted:
"Ten million!"
The room went silent.
A man named Mark Wayne raised his numbered card.
Several people laughed and applauded.
"Ten million!"
The staff confirmed the winning bid.
Mark smiled.
Steve watched him leave with the prizes.
Then he turned back toward Tanya.
"Are you all right?"
She nodded.
"I'm fine."
But Steve could see the difference in her expression.
"Come with me."
He led her toward his private office.
---
Meanwhile
Sam sat alone in her room.
She stared at her phone.
Why haven't they activated me yet?
The phone suddenly pinged.
She grabbed it.
MISSION ACTIVATED
Her expression immediately changed.
She opened the message.
MISSION REPORT
A shipment was coming into Sownsville containing a large quantity of cocaine disguised within clothing, particularly thick jackets.
The shipment had been ordered by a man named Ricardo Leonardo.
Sam's eyes narrowed.
Her mission was simple.
Ensure the shipment does not pass through customs or reach its intended destination.
Sam leaned back.
"Finally."
---
Sunset Club
The bidding had ended.
Steve returned to his office with Tanya.
He opened a refrigerator and removed a bottle.
"Drink?"
"No, thank you."
Steve placed the bottle down.
Then he studied her face.
"You handled yourself well."
Tanya rubbed her hands together.
She looked nervous.
"I'm a little shaken."
Steve said nothing.
She adjusted her glasses.
"But I understand why people come here."
Steve waited.
"They want pleasure. They want an escape. And they're rich enough to pay for it."
She paused.
Then looked directly at him.
"But if you're asking me to become one of those women, I'm sorry."
Steve's expression softened.
"I can't do that."
"I can't."
She shook her head.
"I could work as a bartender. I could clean. I could do almost anything."
Her voice became quieter.
"But I can't become part of that."
Steve smiled faintly.
"This is exactly what I saw in you."
Tanya looked at him.
"When you first came here?"
"Yes."
He leaned against his desk.
"Most people who come to Sunset Club understand what they're getting into. Some want the money. Others want the access. Some want both."
He paused.
"But you aren't like them."
Tanya looked down.
"I don't think I'm better than them."
"I didn't say you were."
Steve smiled.
"You're simply different."
She looked at him again.
Steve continued.
"That is why I can't give you a job here."
Tanya's expression fell.
Steve immediately noticed.
"Wait."
He stepped closer.
"I didn't mean I won't help you."
She looked up.
"I mean I won't give you a job here."
There was a brief silence.
Then Steve took a breath.
"I want you to be my girlfriend."
Tanya's eyes widened.
"What?"
"I know how that sounds."
He raised his hands.
"I don't want you to think I'm trying to buy you or pressure you."
He looked directly into her eyes.
"I genuinely like you."
Tanya didn't answer.
"You're different. You're intelligent. You're not impressed by money, and you're not pretending to be someone you're not."
He smiled.
"I want you to think about it."
He stepped back.
"Take your time. If your answer is no, I'll respect it."
Tanya nodded slowly.
"Okay."
Steve picked up his keys.
"Let me take you home."
---
They left the club.
Inside the car, neither spoke for several minutes.
Eventually, Tanya looked at him.
"Steve?"
"Yes?"
"Can I ask you something?"
"Of course."
"What did you mean by the little dolls collection?"
Steve's hands tightened slightly around the steering wheel.
For a moment, he said nothing.
Then he looked at her.
"I thought you were a smart girl."
"I am."
She hesitated.
"But are there..."
She stopped.
Steve understood.
"You're asking whether the collection involves children."
Tanya's face became serious.
Steve looked back at the road.
"Yes."
She stared at him.
The silence inside the car became heavy.
"Sunset Club has clients who are interested in things that are illegal and disturbing."
His voice was quieter now.
"Some people are willing to pay enormous amounts for access to things they know they shouldn't have."
Tanya looked horrified.
"And you allow it?"
Steve didn't answer immediately.
"We create the illusion that they can get what they want."
He looked at her briefly.
"That's why they pay so much. They know their reputations would be destroyed if the truth came out."
Tanya's hands tightened around her handbag.
"So people are being exploited?"
Steve's expression hardened.
"That's the darker side of the club."
"And nobody stops it?"
Steve looked at her.
"People who talk too much don't remain welcome here."
The words hung in the air.
Tanya stared at him.
Steve continued driving.
"That's why the rule exists."
He glanced at her.
"Whatever happens at Sunset Club stays at Sunset Club."
Tanya looked out the window.
She was silent.
But inside her mind, everything was changing.
Sunset Club wasn't merely a gathering place for rich people.
It was a network.
A place where money could buy silence.
Where influence protected criminals.
Where respectable people could hide behind masks.
And somewhere inside that network was something much darker than she had expected.
Steve broke the silence.
"I trust you."
Tanya looked at him.
"You're too good for a world like that."
He smiled faintly.
"That is why I can't give you a job there."
The car eventually stopped.
Steve looked at her.
"Think about my offer."
Tanya nodded.
"I will."
"I really like you, Tanya."
He smiled.
"But if your answer is no, I'll understand."
She stepped out.
"Goodnight, Steve."
"Goodnight."
The car drove away.
Tanya watched it disappear before entering a taxi.
---
Laspa Mansion
Later that night, Tanya arrived at the mansion.
She entered quietly.
Laspa was sitting at the dinner table, sipping tea.
He looked up.
"How was your outing?"
Tanya removed her glasses.
"And Sunset Club?"
Black Rose stopped.
She looked at him.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she gave him her assessment in a single sentence.
"Much wealth and influence, little virtue."
She turned toward the stairs.
"It's rotten."
Laspa watched her disappear toward her bedroom.
His expression changed.
He slowly placed his teacup on the table.
For the first time that evening, he wasn't smiling.
Black Rose closed her bedroom door behind her.
She leaned against it.
The elegant mask she had worn all evening disappeared.
Her eyes hardened.
Sunset Club had given her something she hadn't expected.
A connection.
A lead.
And a much darker secret.
She walked toward the mirror and looked at herself.
The glasses.
The black dress.
The innocent expression.
Everything about Tanya Richmond looked harmless.
But Black Rose knew better.
She had only just stepped into the game.
