I used Blink to teleport directly into the sky beside my professors.
I floated in the air, my eyes widening with absolute astonishment. "I can fly?" I murmured, my voice trembling with disbelief.
Marlowe, watching me with a knowing smile, nodded. "I granted you the ability to fly while I was casting the sealing incantation on Mizawa's demons. I wove a levitation spell into your aura so you could join us."
A genuine smile of profound gratitude spread across my face. "Thank you so much, Professor! I thought I wouldn't be able to contribute from the ground."
Garlock, hovering beside us, let out a hearty, booming chuckle and stroked his beard thoughtfully. "Looks like the three of us will take Mizawa down together."
Marlowe chuckled, his gaze playful despite the apocalyptic threat. "Could you stop stroking your beard in the middle of a crisis like this?"
Garlock raised an eyebrow, still grinning defiantly. "What can I say? It helps me think."
The Battle in the Sky
The academy grounds had turned into a chaotic battleground. Mizawa hovered high above, her dark aura crackling with malevolent, six-element energy. The sky churned with roiling black clouds and incessant lightning. Each burst of dark energy from her hands shook the very foundations of the academy.
Marlowe, Garlock, and I strained against Mizawa's relentless assault. Marlowe wielded his Light Affinity, creating a massive, radiant shield that cast a blinding glow over the courtyard. However, Mizawa's dark tendrils lashed out, striking the barrier and causing the holy shield to flicker and dim. Garlock, his face set in a grimace of deep concentration, summoned a secondary barrier of steam and rock using his Earth and Water Affinities. The thick wall roared with defiance as Mizawa's dark vortex battered it, causing heavy cracks to form under the immense strain.
I darted through the raging storm, my newfound ability to fly giving me a crucial tactical advantage. My Fire and Air Affinities, seamlessly combined with my Assassin skills, allowed me to weave through the magical chaos with breathtaking agility. Highly concentrated fireballs streaked from my hands, each explosion adding to the brilliant chaos, but Mizawa's dark power seemed to easily absorb or deflect my direct attacks.
"Hold your ground!" Marlowe's voice cut through the howling storm, strained yet fiercely determined. His Dark Affinity wove defensive shadows that violently clashed with Mizawa's dark energy, while his Light Magic provided a fleeting glimmer of hope amidst the destruction. Garlock, sweat streaming down his face, summoned a colossal tidal wave of boiling water and liquid fire. The wave roared as it met Mizawa's dark vortex head-on, causing a cataclysmic upheaval that shook the entire mountain to its core.
My infinite mana was holding up, but the sheer physical and mental fatigue of the aerial battle was setting in. I pressed on through the storm. My fireballs exploded with renewed fury, but each strike felt less effective as Mizawa's relentless counterattacks began to take their toll. My Assassin skills, specifically Blink and Explosive Blink, allowed me to constantly evade Mizawa's devastating strikes and attack from completely unpredictable angles, but the sheer atmospheric pressure was crushing.
The battle reached a terrifying fever pitch as Mizawa, sensing her imminent victory, summoned a cataclysmic storm of raw energy. The sky darkened completely, violet lightning crackling violently as her swirling dark energy intensified. Mizawa unleashed her ultimate attack—a tempest of elemental fury that threatened to engulf the entire campus.
Garlock and Marlowe, their bodies battered and their spirits severely tested, summoned their absolute last reserves of strength. Garlock conjured a colossal, reinforced wall of earth and fire, its surface crackling with raw energy as he strained to hold back the storm's apocalyptic fury. Marlowe, wielding his Light Affinity to its absolute limit, created a blinding shield that pushed aggressively against the dark energy, while his Dark Affinity wove a shadowy buffer around us to shield our bodies from the tempest's might.
Hovering on the brink of physical collapse, I gathered the absolute last of my focus. I reached into my Item Space and drew the divine artifact dagger, the Wrath of God. Its runed blade glowed fiercely. Channeling my elemental power directly into the metal, I launched a final, desperate, dagger-infused fireball straight into the heart of her vortex.
The resulting explosion was immense, creating a blinding kinetic shockwave that staggered Mizawa entirely. The fiery blast illuminated the dark storm, giving the three of us a fleeting glimpse of hope.
The explosion had a massive cascading effect, causing Mizawa's perfect six-element storm to momentarily falter. For a brief second, the dark clouds parted, and the ruined academy grounds were bathed in an eerie, otherworldly light. Mizawa's scream of absolute frustration echoed through the storm; her dark shield flickered as the impact disrupted her control, and she plummeted from the sky toward the ground.
Garlock seized the opportunity immediately. Roaring with pure defiance, he slammed his hands together and summoned a massive earthquake. The ground below shook violently, giant fissures spreading through the academy courtyard as rock and debris flew high into the air. The earthquake's violent tremors completely shattered Mizawa's concentration, and massive chunks of earth rained down upon her.
Marlowe, using his remaining magical strength, unleashed a blinding, concentrated beam of Light Magic directly at her falling form. The golden beam pierced through the storm, scorching the air and intensifying the brightness. Mizawa staggered under the holy assault, her dark energy desperately struggling to counter the blinding light.
Even though I was barely able to stay conscious, I unleashed a rapid flurry of fireballs aimed at Mizawa's weakened form. My attacks were relentless. Each fireball struck with intense, fiery precision, forcing Mizawa to fend off the barrage with frantic, depleting energy.
The storm continued to rage, but Mizawa's power was visibly waning. Her dark shield flickered erratically, and her once-formidable tempest began to completely lose its fury. With a final, highly defiant glare, Mizawa fell heavily to her knees on the shattered earth, her power exhausted and her aura severely dimming.
"You... you may have defeated me today," she spat, her voice filled with seething anger and despair. "But the Demon Lord will come. You cannot stop the true darkness that is approaching."
Marlowe, barely able to stay afloat, managed to address Mizawa through gritted teeth. "Surrender now, Mizawa. The academy is saved. You must yield."
Mizawa's glowing eyes were filled with absolute loathing, yet exhaustion and defeat were evident in her posture. With a final, venomous curse, she relinquished her physical form. "Do what you must," she hissed into the wind. "But remember, this battle is only a minor prelude to the coming darkness."
In a swirl of black shadows, Mizawa teleported away, her form entirely dissipating.
As she vanished, the apocalyptic storm she had summoned finally subsided. The academy lay in absolute ruins, a desolate landscape marred by deep craters and burning debris.
Suddenly, Garlock remembered the massive earthquake skill he had just used. Panic flashing in his eyes, he desperately looked for the other students in the academy. He let out a massive sigh of relief when he found Krisha and the others perfectly safe beneath the golden barrier Marlowe had previously established.
I dropped from the sky, nearly unconscious from sheer exhaustion, and collapsed heavily onto the debris-strewn ground. Marlowe and Garlock, also severely injured and drained, descended slowly beside me. Their ornate robes were torn, their faces grim with soot, and their bodies bore the heavy marks of our valiant fight.
The Aftermath
Krisha sprinted across the rubble and knelt beside me, her beautiful face filled with deep concern as she saw the sheer exhaustion etched into my features. "Kazu! Are you okay?" she asked gently, her voice laced with intense worry.
My breaths came in ragged, painful gasps, but I managed a weak smile. "I'm... fine," I whispered, though my struggle to breathe was highly evident.
Krisha took my calloused hand in hers, her touch incredibly firm and comforting. "I'm here," she said softly, her silver eyes showing profound concern. Her presence was a steadying, warm force as I tried to regain my strength.
Nearby, Garlock and Marlowe looked around with a complicated mixture of relief and immense weariness. The academy grounds, once pristine, were now a horrifying scene of chaos and destruction. But the immediate danger had passed, and the two professors allowed themselves a brief moment of respite.
Marlowe, his voice highly strained from the battle, looked at the ruined surroundings. "At least we managed to drive off Mizawa, the Demon Lord's right hand," he said, his tone reflecting both deep relief and fatigue.
Garlock wiped soot and sweat from his brow, closing his eyes for a brief moment. He nodded in agreement. "That's true, Elias. But just look at the unbelievable damage."
Marlowe surveyed the smoking debris and deep rubble, his expression thoughtful. "It will be alright. No one was seriously injured, and we can rebuild the academy. Our magic should help expedite the repairs," he said with a faint smile, trying to lighten the heavy mood.
Garlock let out a tired, booming chuckle. "Marlowe, you still have a sense of humor even now," he said, shaking his head in sheer amusement.
Marlowe grinned, his eyes twinkling. "Well, at least we have some time off from teaching regular classes while the academy is being fixed, right? Hahaha!"
The two professors laughed together, their voices echoing through the ruined grounds as they sat on the shattered stone, their energy entirely spent but their spirits lifted by their shared survival.
One Week Later
A week later, the academy was slowly being restored to its former glory. Although it wasn't quite as magnificent as before yet, the monumental efforts to rebuild were well underway, thanks to the combined power of magic and hard physical labor. Our daily routines had fully resumed, and Krisha now joined me every single morning for our exercises.
On this particular day, after our routine, Krisha and I returned to our respective dorms in the Scholar's Wing. A few hours later, the five aspiring scholars received an official letter. It was from Garlock, calling all of us to the partially restored Grand Hall.
When we gathered in the hall, Garlock stood at the front with a highly proud expression. "Today, we are here to honor Kazu for his absolute bravery," he began, his voice filled with deep respect. "During the invasion on the Zirabia Magic Heights Academy, Kazu demonstrated exceptional courage and combat skill. As a token of our deepest appreciation, we are awarding him for his heroism."
The room erupted in loud applause. I stood at the front, still slightly recovering from my magical exhaustion, looking both highly surprised and humbled. The acknowledgment from my peers and mentors was a powerful, unforgettable moment.
Krisha stood right by my side, her face glowing with immense pride. As I accepted the small, golden medal of valor, the academy felt a renewed sense of true hope. The battle had been fierce, but the spirit of resilience and unity within the academy was stronger than ever.
As the days passed, the academy continued to recover and rebuild.
Krisha and I spent almost every waking moment together. Whether it was during my morning routine, our spell-binding activities, or even dinner, we were completely inseparable. Despite my usual intense focus on training, I slowly began to realize that I was genuinely falling for her.
One morning, as we were walking side by side through the courtyard, I hesitated before speaking.
"K—Krisha…" I stammered, trying to muster the courage to ask what had been weighing on my mind.
"Yes? What is it, Kazu?" Krisha responded, a hint of curiosity in her soft voice.
"If… if a friend of yours were to, um, like you… would that be okay?" I asked, my heart racing faster than it did against the Demon Lord's right hand.
"O—Of course!" Krisha replied quickly, her mind instantly spinning with hopeful thoughts. Is he about to confess to me? she wondered, feeling her own heart flutter wildly against her ribs.
"Ahh… never mind. Forget I said anything!" I blurted out, my confidence entirely crumbling as heavy doubts filled my mind. What if it ruins our friendship? Maybe I should wait until I'm absolutely sure… I thought, quickly retreating into myself.
"Alright then," Krisha said, trying desperately to hide her disappointment. Why won't he just say it? I like him too… she thought. But instead of pressing me and making it awkward, she smoothly changed the subject. "By the way, I read in a book at the library earlier today that there's a highly elevated chance of shooting stars tonight. Would you like to watch them together?"
"That sounds like a great idea!" I exclaimed, visibly relieved at the easy change in topic. "I'll head back to my dorm and prepare for later."
"Okay… see you tonight." Krisha smiled softly, waving as I walked away. Why didn't he just admit it? she sighed, glancing back at the blue sky, already deeply anticipating our evening under the stars.
The Demon Lord's Wrath
Far from the peaceful, rebuilding scene at the academy, Mizawa arrived at the nightmarish grand palace of the Demon Lord. Rostiel stood tall, his back turned, gazing intently at his most powerful weapon—the Spear of Destruction—as Mizawa approached with her urgent news.
"Lord Rostiel, I bring news," Mizawa began, bowing respectfully to the cold stone floor. "I have successfully destroyed the capital city of Soradia and completely slaughtered its finest warriors."
"Well done, Mizawa," Rostiel replied, his voice cold and terrifyingly emotionless.
"However," Mizawa continued, a trace of bitter frustration in her tone, "I was unable to completely eliminate the professors at the academy in Druzka. They have powerful instructors who entirely countered my six affinities, and there is a boy named Kazu…"
"Professors? Kazu?" Rostiel interrupted, finally turning his monstrous form to face her. "Who are they?"
"They were the ones who actively thwarted my attempt to destroy the heart of Druzka," Mizawa admitted, her voice tinged with regret. "I apologize, Lord Rostiel, for failing to carry out your orders completely."
"Do not worry," Rostiel said, a deeply sinister, toothy grin spreading across his face. "Allow me to visit this place personally."
Mizawa knelt lower before Demon Lord Rostiel, her head bowed in absolute reverence as she expressed her gratitude for his unexpected forgiveness. "I will strive to do much better next time, my lord. I promise to complete every single task you assign."
Rostiel regarded her with a highly measured, predatory gaze. "It is a significant accomplishment that you simply returned alive to my kingdom," he said slowly.
Mizawa slowly rose to her feet, her voice steady. "Thank you, my lord."
Rostiel's expression remained completely unreadable as he asked, "And what of Kazike? Were you able to convince the assassin to join us?"
A sharp hint of regret flickered in Mizawa's glowing eyes as she responded, "I was not successful."
Rostiel leaned forward slightly, his tone laced with a highly dangerous edge. "Then you are fine with him becoming collateral damage in our total conquest of their world, correct?"
Mizawa swallowed hard, but nodded without hesitation. "Yes, Lord Rostiel."
A wicked grin spread across Rostiel's face. "Excellent. Soon, we will utterly crush the three nations in this world and enslave them all."
Mizawa's agreement was firm, her voice completely unwavering. "Yes, Lord Rostiel."
Outside the dark, looming fortress of the Demon Lord, a vast, terrifying army of battle-hardened demons stood in perfect formation, ready to invade. Though their absolute numbers were not yet sufficient, they awaited the right moment—when their forces would swell enough to unleash apocalyptic fury upon the three remaining nations of Harandur, Soradia, and Druzka.
