"Wait!" Tong Ran shouted.
Mo Nanjue paused his steps. He didn't turn around, nor did he continue walking out. It seemed he was waiting for her to speak.
Tong Ran stared at his back. In just the span of one night, it seemed as if a deep chasm had formed between them. She felt a weight pressing on her chest, one that refused to disperse.
Her lips opened and closed several times, yet she couldn't utter a word.
Mo Nanjue did not look back. The silence between them was terrifying. After a few minutes of pause, he opened the door and walked out.
Tong Ran watched the redwood door close and suddenly called out, "I'm hungry!"
No one responded. She sat on the edge of the bed, feeling an unbearable emptiness in her heart. Tong Ran didn't follow. Her lower abdomen still hurt a bit as she curled up in the blanket and lay back in bed.
