"Today's the day," Ryu said as he approached me, his usual grin in place. His jovial nature had returned after the intensity of the last few days. "You've done well, Aldrich. But it's time to put everything to the test."
I nodded, already anticipating what was coming. "What's the challenge?"
Ryu's eyes sparkled with a mix of excitement and seriousness. "You're going out to the barren lands again, but this time, no weapons, no magic. Just your body. You'll be facing the magical beasts that inhabit the area, and you'll need to defeat them using only your Steel Tyrant Body."
A thrill of anticipation ran through me. The thought of testing my new abilities against actual opponents was exhilarating. "Understood. What's the objective?"
"The objective is survival," Ryu said, his tone dropping a notch. "These beasts won't be pushovers, and there might be something unexpected out there. Your goal is to come back here, alive, and stronger."
"I can handle it," I said confidently. The training had hardened me, both physically and mentally. I was ready.
"GUAHAHAHA!" Ryu laughed, slapping me on the back. "We'll see, Aldrich. The beasts out there are fierce, and some of them are smarter than you'd expect. Don't underestimate them."
I nodded, taking a deep breath. "When do I start?"
"Right now," Ryu said, gesturing toward the gate that led out of the village. "Head to the east. The further you go, the more dangerous the beasts."
I tightened the straps on my boots, adjusting my gear out of habit more than necessity. There wasn't much to bring; I wouldn't need any of it where I was going. As I made my way toward the village gate, Ryu's words echoed in my mind.
"Remember, Aldrich," he had said, his eyes hard and unforgiving. "This isn't just about brute strength. This is about control, precision, and knowing when to strike. Out there, you'll be facing creatures that rely on instinct, but they're still dangerous. Don't underestimate them."
The barren lands loomed ahead, a desolate expanse of cracked earth and jagged rocks. The air was dry, the wind carrying the scent of dust and decay. I could feel the weight of the land's history—the battles fought, the blood spilled—embedded in the very ground beneath my feet.
I took a deep breath, stepping forward into the wilderness once again but now I have to explore it deeper. There was no turning back now.
.
.
.
The first few beasts I encountered were nothing more than nuisances. A pack of feral wolf-like creatures with snarling maws and bloodshot eyes lunged at me from the shadows. Their claws raked against my skin, but they might as well have been swiping at steel.
SNAP!
My fist collided with one of their skulls, the sound of bone shattering echoing in the still air. Another leaped at me from the side, and I grabbed it by the throat, squeezing until its body went limp. I tossed it aside, turning to face the rest of the pack. They hesitated, their instincts screaming at them to flee, but it was too late.
I moved faster than they could react, my body a blur as I tore through them. Each strike was precise, every movement calculated. My fists and feet became weapons of destruction, leaving nothing but mangled corpses in my wake.
It was almost too easy.
The last of the wolves whimpered, attempting to drag itself away, but I didn't give it the chance. With a swift kick, I ended its misery, sending it flying into a nearby rock with a sickening CRUNCH.
I wiped the blood from my hands, looking around at the carnage. My breath came steady, my heart barely racing. The thrill of battle had been there, but it was fleeting, almost unsatisfying. These creatures were nothing more than pests—fodder.
But I knew there were stronger beasts out here. There had to be.
I ventured deeper into the barren lands, the landscape growing more treacherous with every step. The ground beneath me cracked and crumbled, revealing deep fissures that seemed to stretch into the bowels of the earth. The wind picked up, howling through the jagged rocks like a chorus of lost souls.
And then, I felt it—a presence. It was faint at first, like a whisper on the wind, but it grew stronger with every passing second. Something was watching me. Something powerful.
I slowed my pace, my senses on high alert. The air was thick with tension, the stillness before a storm. My muscles tensed, ready to spring into action at a moment's notice.
The ground beneath me trembled, a low rumble that resonated in my bones. I could hear it now—a deep, guttural growl that seemed to reverberate from the earth itself. Whatever it was, it was big. And it was coming for me.
THUD. THUD. THUD.
The sound of heavy footsteps echoed through the barren land, growing louder with each impact. I turned toward the source, my eyes narrowing as a massive figure emerged from the shadows.
It was a beast unlike any I had ever seen. Towering over me at nearly twice my height, its body was covered in thick, stone-like scales that glistened in the fading light. Its eyes glowed with a malevolent intelligence, a deep crimson that seemed to pierce through my very soul.
It opened its massive maw, revealing rows of jagged teeth. "HU-MAN," it rumbled, the word distorted and guttural, as if it was struggling to speak.
I took a step back, my heart pounding in my chest. This was no ordinary magical beast. It was intelligent, powerful, and dangerous.
"Finally," I muttered
I clenched my fists, my body tensing as I prepared for the fight. The beast snarled, its muscles coiling as it prepared to strike.
BOOM!
It moved with a speed that belied its massive size, charging at me with the force of a runaway train. I barely had time to react, diving to the side as it crashed into the ground where I had been standing. The impact sent shockwaves through the earth, the ground cracking and splintering under the force.
I rolled to my feet, my eyes locked on the beast as it turned to face me. It was fast—faster than any creature its size had any right to be. But I was faster.
I launched myself at the beast, my fist aimed at its head. It swung one massive claw at me, but I ducked under the blow, driving my fist into its jaw with all the force I could muster.
CRACK!
The sound of impact echoed through the barren land, but the beast barely flinched. My attack had left a dent in its scales, but it wasn't enough. The creature roared in anger, its tail whipping around to strike me with the force of a battering ram.
I barely had time to react, crossing my arms in front of me to block the blow. The impact sent me flying backward, my body crashing into a nearby boulder. The force of the impact shattered the rock, leaving me dazed and struggling to catch my breath.
I pushed myself to my feet, shaking off the pain. The beast was already charging at me again, its eyes blazing with fury.
"HU-MAN," it growled again, the word filled with venom.
I smirked, wiping the blood from my mouth. "Yeah, I get it. You don't like me. I don't like your ugly face as well."
The beast lunged at me, its claws outstretched. I waited until the last possible moment before sidestepping its attack, bringing my fist down on the back of its neck with all my strength.
THUD!
The beast stumbled, but it didn't fall. It turned on me with a snarl, its tail whipping around to strike me again. This time, I was ready. I leaped over the tail, landing a solid kick to its side as I passed.
THUD!
The beast roared in pain, its body slamming into the ground with enough force to shake the earth. I didn't give it a chance to recover, rushing forward to deliver a flurry of punches to its head and neck.
BAM! BAM! BAM!
Each strike was met with the sound of cracking stone, the beast's scales beginning to give way under the relentless assault. But it wasn't enough. The creature was still too strong, too resilient.
It lashed out at me with its claws, and I barely managed to dodge the attack. The beast was getting desperate, its movements growing more erratic and unpredictable.
I needed to finish this. And I needed to do it now.
I took a deep breath, focusing all my energy into my next attack. My muscles tensed, my body vibrating with power as I prepared to unleash everything I had.
"THIS ENDS NOW!" I roared, launching myself at the beast with a speed that caught even it off guard.
BOOM!
My fist connected with the beast's head, the force of the blow sending shockwaves through the air. The sound of cracking stone filled my ears as the creature's skull gave way under the impact.
CRACK!
The beast let out one final, ear-piercing roar before collapsing to the ground, its massive body shaking the earth one last time before falling still.
I stood over the creature's lifeless body, my chest heaving with exertion. The battle had taken more out of me than I'd anticipated, but I had won.
The beast was dead, its body lying motionless at my feet.
I wiped the sweat from my brow, looking down at the creature.
As I caught my breath, I felt a familiar sensation wash over me—a warm, tingling feeling that spread through my body like wildfire. The system was reacting to the battle, and I knew what was coming.
Ding!
