I kept it straightforward, what the alliance could look like going forward, why it was worth keeping even without the personal arrangement he'd come here expecting. By the end he said to send him a proposal and he'd read it.
"You did your homework," he complimented.
"I try to. My position here is new. I don't have the luxury of walking into important conversations without knowing what I'm talking about."
To my utmost surprise, he didn’t fight it when I told him all about what I shared with Kaden and the baby on the way. Perhaps, he didn’t want his daughter to be a stepmother at an early age.
That was something. I'd take it.

The corridor outside was quiet.
I was alone for maybe thirty seconds, one hand on my belly, letting the last hour decompress, moving slowly toward the main staircase. The meeting had gone okay. My brain was still running a little hot from it.
I turned the corner into the side corridor.
Lucy was already there.
