Chapter 121 - Chapter 119: Songs of the White Wolf

Chapter 119: Songs of the White Wolf

Winter had arrived early at Winterfell.

Thick snow blanketed the ancient stone walls, turning the castle into a silent white fortress. Servants hurried through the courtyards with braziers and heavy cloaks, while guards stamped their feet against the cold on the battlements. Life continued as it always had in the North — sturdy, enduring, and uncomplaining.

Yet beneath the familiar rhythm, something had changed.

Every merchant caravan arriving from White Harbor brought new tales. Every sailor who had seen the monstrous ship spoke in hushed, awed voices. Every traveler who passed through carried impossible stories. And nowhere were those stories devoured more eagerly than among the young ladies of Winterfell.

In Sansa's warm chambers, embroidery hoops lay forgotten on the table. Jeyne Poole sat cross-legged on the bed, practically vibrating with excitement as she recounted the latest gossip for the third time that afternoon.

"Old Thom spoke to one of the knights who actually went aboard the Winter's Titan," Jeyne said, eyes wide. "He said the decks are wider than the Great Hall! And below them — gods, Sansa — there are entire streets of rooms. Hundreds upon hundreds. All warm. All lit by magic lanterns that never go out."

Sansa smiled softly, her needle paused above a half-finished direwolf pattern. "You've told me this part already."

"But not all of it!" Jeyne leaned forward, lowering her voice to a conspiratorial whisper. "He said the streets of the city shine through the night. No torches. No servants running around with oil. They simply… shine. Like stars trapped in glass."

Sansa blinked, trying to picture it. "How is that possible?"

Jeyne threw her hands up dramatically. "Magic, obviously! What else could it be?"

Sansa laughed, a light, musical sound. "You think everything is magic these days."

"Well, what else could it be?" Jeyne huffed. "Smooth roads wider than marble. Iron beasts that carry hundreds of people faster than horses can run. Granaries that never empty. And they say no one goes hungry — not even the poorest."

Sansa's smile softened. She lowered her gaze to her embroidery.

"And they say their king is very handsome," Jeyne added with a mischievous grin.

Sansa rolled her eyes. "Jeyne."

"What? It's true! They call him the White Wolf King now."

"He's not really a king," Sansa said quietly. "He's our brother."

Jeyne sighed dreamily, resting her chin on her hands. "He's your brother. To everyone else… he's a king."

Later that afternoon, as Sansa walked through the inner courtyard, she overheard two young maids speaking near the well.

"They say he built it all himself," one whispered excitedly. "The whole city. In just a few years."

"Aye," the other replied. "And he's young too. They say when he left Winterfell at six years old, Lord Stark himself let him go because the boy was already considered a genius — blessed by the gods. Maesters and septons spoke of him."

Sansa slowed her steps, listening.

The first maid continued, "The people there love him. Truly love him. One sailor swore they cheer whenever he walks through the streets."

The maids noticed her then and quickly curtsied. "My lady."

Sansa nodded politely and continued on her way, but their words lingered.

Jon had left Winterfell when he was only six. Father had allowed it. Everyone at the time had whispered that the boy was special — touched by the old gods, a prodigy beyond normal children. And now those whispers had become legends.

That evening, Sansa slipped away to the Godswood.

Snow fell gently around the ancient heart tree, its red leaves stark against the white. She sat on the stone bench, pulling her cloak tighter, and let the quiet wash over her.

Memories surfaced, soft and fragmented.

Jon at six years old — already quieter and sharper than other boys his age. The way Father had watched him with a mixture of pride and worry before finally allowing him to leave. The quiet farewells. The way Jon had looked back only once, offering a small, serious nod.

He had never demanded attention. Never boasted. Never tried to prove he belonged.

And now the world spoke of him like a figure from the old songs.

The White Wolf King.

The Builder of Winter's Heaven.

The Boy Blessed by the Gods.

It felt like a dream. Yet every traveler told the same tale.

Sansa closed her eyes and tried to imagine it — shining streets, warm homes in the dead of winter, a city that never slept. And at its center walked Jon. No longer the quiet six-year-old who left Winterfell, but a man who had turned frozen wilderness into a kingdom.

Did he still remember them? Did he still remember her?

A small, private smile touched her lips.

Supper that night was livelier than usual.

Bran spoke rapidly, gesturing with his hands. "Maester Luwin says the iron beasts must run on some kind of mechanism. Like clocks, but much larger."

Rickon frowned, chewing loudly. "They're beasts. Jon rides wolves. Real ones."

Bran shook his head. "No, they're machines. They run on metal tracks."

Rickon puffed his cheeks stubbornly. "Jon's stronger than machines. He was blessed by the gods even when he was little. Father let him go because he was too clever."

Robb laughed loudly from the head of the table. "He probably is."

Arya grinned, stabbing a piece of meat with her knife. "Jon can beat anyone."

Theon rolled his eyes. "They're all just exaggerated stories."

Robb shook his head. "No. White Harbor merchants don't lie about trade. The Manderlys themselves are doing business with Winter's Heaven. They've seen it."

Theon snorted but said nothing more.

Ned Stark ate quietly, listening to his children. Sansa noticed the small, proud smile that occasionally touched her father's face whenever Jon's name came up. He said nothing, but his eyes were warm with memory.

After the meal, as the family began to disperse, Arya suddenly appeared beside Sansa in the corridor.

"You've been smiling all day," Arya said, narrowing her eyes suspiciously.

Sansa jumped. "What? I have not."

Arya grinned wickedly. "Liar. You're thinking about Jon again."

"I am not!"

"You are. Jeyne's been filling your head with stories about how handsome the White Wolf King is."

Sansa's cheeks flushed. "Arya!"

Arya laughed, dodging Sansa's attempt to swat her. "I'm telling Robb!"

"Don't you dare!"

That only made Arya laugh harder as she darted away.

That night, Sansa lay in her bed beneath thick furs. Moonlight spilled through the window, painting the room in silver.

Sleep would not come easily.

Her mind wandered north, far beyond the Wall.

She imagined shining streets covered in snow that never seemed to stick. Great iron beasts gliding silently along tracks. Warm homes where children laughed instead of huddling for warmth. And somewhere in the heart of that impossible city walked Jon — no longer the solemn six-year-old genius their father had reluctantly let leave Winterfell, but a king who had turned frozen wilderness into legend.

Did he still carry that quiet intensity? Did he remember the Godswood? Did he remember his siblings?

Did he remember her?

A soft, wistful smile curved her lips in the darkness.

One day, perhaps, she would see this Winter's Heaven for herself.

One day, she would see her brother again.

Meanwhile, thousands of miles to the north, inside the brightly lit Hall of Governance of Winter's Heaven, Jon Snow sat buried beneath mountains of paperwork.

Ygritte had once again claimed half his desk as her personal territory, swinging her legs lazily while flipping through reports upside down.

Val sat across the room, pretending to study a trade ledger while shooting occasional glances their way.

Tormund Giantsbane lounged near the fireplace, laughing so loudly that several officials had already fled the chamber in embarrassment.

Jon rubbed his temple, fighting a smile. "Must you corrupt my entire staff, Tormund?"

The big wildling grinned. "They need corrupting. Too serious, these southern types."

Ygritte leaned over and plucked a quill from Jon's hand. "You've worked enough today, Snow."

Jon sighed, but there was fondness in it. "The kingdom doesn't run itself."

"Aye," Ygritte said, "but tonight it can wait."

Far to the south, in the ancient halls of Winterfell beneath the falling snow, songs of the White Wolf — the boy blessed by the gods who left at six and returned as a king — had begun to take root in the hearts of those who remembered him.
