A few minutes later, he came back with a very serious expression on his little face.
He was carrying a small plate with both hands, walking carefully as though he were carrying something extremely precious.
Bella looked up in surprise.
"Eli?"
He carefully placed the plate in front of her.
"Mumma, I brought you food."
Bella blinked. "You did?"
He nodded proudly.
"I told Aunty Flora to make it."
Bella looked down at the plate. On it were a few crackers, some sliced apple and a small piece of plain toast. Simple things. Safe things that wouldn't upset her stomach.
She looked back at Eli.
"Did you choose all of this yourself?"
Eli nodded again, his little chest puffing up. "I checked my book."
Bella tilted her head.
"Your book?"
Eli's eyes widened. He immediately slapped both hands over his mouth.
Oops.
Bella raised an eyebrow.
"Eli… what book?"
He shook his head quickly.
"Nothing, Mumma. I didn't say book."
"Eli."
"Nothing, Mumma," Eli said quickly.
