Chapter 706 - Chapter 706: The Brightest Star

Chapter 706: The Brightest Star

"Barcelona has paid a heavy price for their own mistake!"

"1:2—Manchester United has turned the game around against Barcelona."

"This is undoubtedly a devastating blow to Barcelona, who have struggled to create meaningful opportunities on the attack. The damage isn't only tactical but psychological as well."

"Ter Stegen must bear responsibility for this goal. His foolish error gifted Manchester United an indirect free-kick inside the box, which resulted in the second goal."

"Notably, Ernesto Valverde has already used two substitutions without finding any way to change the game. Meanwhile, José Mourinho hasn't made a single change, which highlights just how satisfied he is with the game's progression."

Watching Bruno Fernandes sprint out of the pitch, celebrating his brace with unrestrained passion, Lionel Messi felt deeply frustrated. Compared to Bruno's dazzling performance, Messi had been entirely overshadowed in this match.

Not just him—the entire Barcelona team seemed lacking in energy.

Throughout the first half, Barcelona had dominated possession, but Messi had managed just 16 touches and 12 passes, most of which were on the flank.

Luke Shaw's relentless marking had been a nightmare. Shaw focused on cutting off passes to Messi from the midfield and left flank, forcing Messi to remain isolated on the wing. Whenever Messi did receive the ball, Shaw's main priority was to block his path to cut inside, leaving Messi stranded without the option to play his preferred game.

To make matters worse, Messi's weaker right foot offered little threat.

With Philippe Coutinho stranded and isolated on the left, the midfield suppressed, and Luis Suárez struggling to find form, Barcelona's entire attacking setup appeared paralyzed.

Messi desperately wanted to make an impact and help his team, but he found himself unable to deliver.

Before the match, the Catalan media had pinned their hopes on Messi, expecting him to lead Barcelona to victory over Manchester United. For Messi and Barcelona, this match represented a chance to regain their former glory.

Since 2012, while Barcelona had maintained dominance in La Liga, their magic in Europe had faded. For seven years, they had failed to reach the Champions League final. During this period, Messi, who had won four consecutive Ballon d'Or and FIFA Best Player awards, hadn't claimed either prize in seven years.

Many hailed the past five years as the era of "the three giants" in football. However, some questioned whether Messi still deserved a place among them.

Over the last seven years, Messi hadn't secured a single Ballon d'Or or FIFA Best Player title. From being three awards ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo, he had been overtaken. Meanwhile, Bruno Fernandes, a rising star, had already caught up.

2019 was considered Messi's best chance to reclaim the top spot. Without a major international tournament that year, performances at the club level were poised to decide the awards.

So far, Barcelona and Messi had performed brilliantly in La Liga, with the league title almost guaranteed. Individually, Messi's stats were comparable to Bruno's and better than Ronaldo's.

The Champions League clash with Manchester United was seen as a decisive moment. A victory would symbolize Messi's triumph over Bruno. Advancing to the semifinals would likely set up a matchup against Ronaldo's Juventus, where Barcelona's strength gave them a good chance of victory.

If Messi could defeat his two main rivals and lead Barcelona back to European glory, the 2019 Ballon d'Or and FIFA Best Player titles would be his without question.

Everything hinged on tonight. Victory against Manchester United was the foundation for Messi's return to the top.

"Tonight will belong to Messi," proclaimed Mundo Deportivo.

But as the game progressed, it seemed instead to belong to Bruno Fernandes—or, as Barcelona fans might call it, a nightmare night.

Messi wasn't alone in his frustration. Many Barcelona players shared his sense of helplessness.

They wanted to step up, to put on a better display. But with their tactics thoroughly suppressed by United, their individual efforts felt futile.

In such moments, everyone looked to Messi. They hoped he could transform into the superhuman figure he often became in La Liga, capable of dismantling any defense.

But it was clear that Messi no longer possessed the same magical influence he once had. He seemed like a magician who had misplaced his wand, struggling to conjure the brilliance expected of him.

Barcelona's most dangerous moment in the second half did come from Messi.

Suárez managed to bypass Harry Maguire, breaking into the box for a shot, only to be denied by a spectacular save from David de Gea.

Moments later, Messi received the ball, sidestepped Luke Shaw, and attempted a shot. But his effort, rushed and imprecise, was blocked by João Cancelo before it could reach the goal.

For all their possession and effort, Barcelona lacked the means to break through.

Meanwhile, Manchester United, emboldened after their two goals, grew in confidence. They defended steadily and waited patiently for opportunities to counterattack.

As Barcelona's frustration mounted, so did their errors—and soon enough, United found another chance to exploit them.

"Manchester United intercepts the ball in midfield. N'Golo Kanté wins possession and passes it to Fred."

"Fred takes the ball on the right flank and decides to drive it forward himself."

"Manchester United launches a rapid counterattack, with their front three joining the charge."

"Marcus Rashford makes a diagonal run into the box, pulling defenders away for Fred."

"Fred reaches the right side of the box and crosses to the near post, aiming for Rashford."

"Rashford goes for a header... Ter Stegen dives and punches it away!"

"The ball is still in the box. Harry Kane gets the first touch, heading it across to the far post..."

During the fast-paced counterattack, Bruno Fernandes had observed Fred surging down the right flank. Instead of rushing into the box, Bruno chose to hang back slightly, creating more space and depth in the attack.

He also positioned himself confidently, anticipating a potential delivery to the far post where he could make a late run.

Fred opted for the near post, targeting Rashford. Although Rashford's header was saved by Ter Stegen, Bruno quickly noted Kane's positioning. Seizing the moment, he surged into the box.

As expected, Kane used his aerial dominance to head the ball to the far post. Bruno, perfectly timed, found himself in the right place at the right time.

Defender Carles Aleñá was hot on Bruno's heels, while Clément Lenglet retreated, trying to predict the ball's trajectory. The two defenders closed in, sandwiching Bruno. But despite their efforts, Bruno leapt higher than either of them.

Though Lenglet had a height advantage of three centimeters over Bruno, his backward momentum hampered his jump. Bruno, with a full running start, soared past both Lenglet and Aleñá.

Bruno timed his leap perfectly, meeting the ball with a powerful header. The ball changed direction sharply, flying into Barcelona's net.

"Wow!!!!"

"Oh my god! He's done it again!!!"

"Hat-trick! Hat-trick!!"

"Unbelievable! Bruno Fernandes has scored a hat-trick at the Camp Nou! This is absolutely incredible!"

"His leap was astonishing, towering over Lenglet by nearly a full head. The French defender stood no chance as Bruno powered his header into the net!"

"3:1! Manchester United has sealed the victory!"

As Bruno landed, he immediately turned and sprinted toward the sideline. This marked his third goal and his third celebratory glide across the Camp Nou turf.

At that moment, the Camp Nou fell into complete silence. The 95,000 Barcelona fans in attendance were stunned—no boos, no applause, just a deafening void.

Surprisingly, Bruno wasn't overly ecstatic this time. The third goal, while spectacular, felt almost too easy—an outcome of perfect teamwork and timing.

He acknowledged that his decision to hang back and make a late run into the box had indeed paid off. But the chance created by his teammates had been so ideal that missing it would have been inexcusable.

Perhaps because he had already celebrated twice, or maybe because the goal came so effortlessly, Bruno's reaction was more subdued. He jogged to the sideline, raised a hand to acknowledge the crowd, and then turned back to embrace his jubilant teammates.

"Barcelona has suffered a complete and utter defeat!"

"This is undoubtedly a hard pill to swallow, but Manchester United played the better game tonight, showcasing more energy and tactical superiority. Bruno Fernandes was the star of the show, securing a hat-trick at the Camp Nou!"

"Valverde must reevaluate his strategy. Both Philippe Coutinho and Messi were neutralized by Manchester United, yet his substitutions failed to reignite Barcelona's attack. This is a glaring oversight!"

"From 1:0 to 1:3, Barcelona has endured a nightmarish collapse. At the Camp Nou, no less! This result has almost certainly dashed their hopes of reaching the semifinals."

"That said, there's still a second leg. If Valverde can restore Barcelona to their peak form, the tie is not yet over."

"As for Manchester United, Mourinho's tactical brilliance deserves recognition. His game plan effectively stifled Barcelona, and Bruno's incredible form was the icing on the cake. This hat-trick is undeniable proof of his excellence!"
