Chapter 710 - Chapter 710: Professor Busquets vs. Bruno

Chapter 710: Professor Busquets vs. Bruno

After letting go of his brief hold, Busquets focused on using his body to block Bruno's progress, forcing him into a more difficult position while hoping that Piqué would step up to provide cover.

Despite the physical battle, Bruno managed to hold his ground. As he dribbled into the penalty area, he could feel Busquets easing up—aware of the potential risk of conceding a penalty in such a sensitive area.

Bruno's peripheral vision scanned the surroundings while his eyes locked on Piqué. The former Manchester United defender was closing in, having just shaken off Harry Kane.

Bruno needed only a glance to calculate his timing—he was confident.

As soon as he stepped into the box, his first touch set up the shot.

Busquets, ever the experienced defender, immediately recognized the danger. Throwing caution to the wind, he lunged forward in a desperate sliding tackle to block the shot.

But Bruno was quicker. Before Busquets could react, Bruno had already swung his leg and unleashed his strike!

The Decisive Strike

"Bruno dribbles into the penalty area…"

"Shoots!"

"GOAL!!!!!!"

"Gooooooooooooooal!!!"

"In the 7th minute, Manchester United breaks through Barcelona's defense!"

"Once again, it's Bruno making a diagonal run into the box. Gündoğan's through ball was perfectly weighted, and Bruno surged forward into the penalty area. Busquets was helpless to stop him!"

"Piqué, distracted by Harry Kane's movement, couldn't close down in time, leaving Bruno free to shoot."

"The ball rockets into the bottom right corner of the net!"

"1–0! Manchester United takes the lead!"

A Frenzied Stadium

The Millennium Stadium erupted into wild celebrations. No one had expected such an early breakthrough, nor for United to dismantle Barcelona's defense with such ease.

This wasn't even United's first chance. Within the opening three minutes, Bruno had unleashed a thunderous long-range strike that rattled the crossbar. Just moments later, Rashford, Kane, and Bruno each had opportunities, including a fifth-minute shot from Bruno that grazed the post.

Tactical Superiority

"Bruno's performance in these opening moments has been electrifying," a commentator exclaimed. "His two long-range efforts set the tone and caught Barcelona off guard, forcing Busquets to stay tight on him. But ultimately, that pressure created opportunities, as we just saw."

"Piqué's inability to provide timely support highlighted Barcelona's defensive fragility. But who can blame him? Kane, Rashford, and Bruno—this quartet is a nightmare for any defense!"

Bruno's Celebration

Bruno sprinted toward the corner, arms wide, as though gliding across the Millennium Stadium. Behind him, teammates chased him down, joining the euphoric embrace under the main stand as fans roared his name.

This goal was more than just the opener—it was a psychological blow. For Barcelona to progress, they now needed three goals just to force extra time.

The expressions on Barcelona's players told the story. Their confidence wavered, particularly among the defenders who now carried the weight of their struggles.

Barcelona's Decline

"Barcelona's defensive frailty has been exposed once again. Last season's success was largely down to their offensive prowess masking these issues, but cracks in the defense have grown increasingly evident this campaign," noted a commentator.

"With Real Madrid weakened by Cristiano Ronaldo's departure and the aging of key players like Modric, Barcelona has faced little domestic competition. Despite a nine-point lead in La Liga, their defensive struggles are undeniable. Tonight's performance only highlights their decline."

United's Rise

"On the other hand, Mourinho's Manchester United continues to impress. Over the past two seasons, they've dominated the Premier League, set a record 69-game unbeaten streak, and dethroned Real Madrid in Europe, reclaiming the Champions League after a decade-long drought."

"Bruno Fernandes epitomizes United's resurgence. His staggering output over recent seasons has been jaw-dropping. In the current Premier League campaign, he's scored 35 goals and provided 23 assists in 32 matches—averaging two goal contributions per game.

"In the Champions League, his numbers are even more astonishing—14 goals and 10 assists in just 10 appearances, averaging 2.4 goal contributions per game. He's simply on another level."

Bruno had delivered yet again, setting the stage for another chapter in United's resurgence and further solidifying his place among football's elite.

"In the summer of 2016, Manchester United spent a record-breaking €200 million to bring Bruno from Udinese, a transfer fee that many considered excessive and highly risky. But looking back now, it's clear that the investment was worth every penny. Bruno's arrival has elevated Manchester United to an entirely new level."

"In the three years prior to Bruno's signing, Manchester United struggled even to qualify for the Champions League, hitting one of the lowest points in the club's history. But after his arrival, United has virtually won every major trophy, becoming the second team in European football history to win every available title in a single season—the second officially recognized 'Galácticos'."

Mourinho's Belief in Bruno

On the sidelines, José Mourinho clearly appreciated Bruno's outstanding performance. Particularly in the Champions League, Bruno seemed even more comfortable, showcasing consistent efficiency in attack.

In the Premier League, Bruno has played 32 matches this season, scoring 35 goals and providing 23 assists—an astounding 1.8 goal contributions per game. However, in the Champions League, he surpasses even that with an incredible 2.4 goal contributions per game.

The trend has been consistent. Last season, Bruno scored 41 goals and assisted 23 times in 38 Premier League games, averaging 1.7 goal contributions per match. But in the Champions League, his 14 goals and 11 assists in 12 games resulted in a 2.1 average per game.

It's safe to say that Bruno has been integral to Manchester United's dominant performances in the Champions League over the past two seasons.

In domestic competitions, United's dominance remains evident. The team is poised to become the third in Premier League history to achieve a three-peat. If successful, Mourinho would become only the second manager after Sir Alex Ferguson to win three consecutive Premier League titles.

"I have a strong feeling, Rui," Mourinho said, glancing up at the brilliantly lit stadium. "This season, we're winning the Champions League again."

Faria nodded in agreement.

With Barcelona now eliminated, United's semifinal opponent would either be Juventus or Ajax. If it's Juventus, the match would undoubtedly be a grueling battle—especially with "that man" still in Turin. However, reports from the Allianz Stadium suggested the match was still even, meaning Ajax had a strong chance of pulling off an upset.

While Ajax posed a respectable challenge, United's strength made them clear favorites to advance.

Building Another Dynasty

"If we win the Champions League, that would make it two Champions League titles and one Europa League trophy in three years…"

Faria didn't finish the sentence, but his meaning was clear.

Two Champions League titles and a Europa League trophy in three years would establish another red dynasty under Mourinho's leadership.

Mourinho didn't say it aloud, but his heart was filled with ambition. His gaze shifted to the field, landing on Bruno.

At just 24 years old, Bruno was not only Mourinho's hope but also the source of his confidence.

The Second Goal

After play resumed, Bruno continued his relentless pursuit of opportunities, using his dynamic movement and superior positional awareness to exploit gaps—particularly around Busquets. The 31-year-old Barcelona veteran struggled to keep up, visibly exhausted yet unable to step back.

Barcelona attempted a brief counterattack after conceding the opening goal. Manchester United had to endure yellow cards for Gündoğan and Luke Shaw to contain the pressure.

Then, in the 26th minute, United launched another lethal counterattack after winning the ball in midfield. Bruno carried the ball to the edge of the box before threading a precise pass to Mbappé on the right flank.

Mbappé surged into the penalty area, executed a sudden stop, then restarted with explosive acceleration, leaving Piqué in his wake. Spotting Ter Stegen rushing out, Mbappé delivered a perfect left-footed cross into the middle.

The ball zipped between Ter Stegen and Piqué as they scrambled in vain. From behind Piqué, Harry Kane emerged to calmly tap the ball into the net with his right foot.

2–0!

Jubilant Celebration

Harry Kane tumbled after the shot but quickly sprang to his feet, sprinting to the sideline to celebrate. Bruno caught up, leaping onto Kane's back as the English striker carried him in celebration.

The Barcelona players, meanwhile, looked utterly defeated, their heads bowed in dismay.

When the quarterfinal draw pitted them against Manchester United, they had been optimistic. Memories of past Champions League triumphs over United filled them with confidence.

But the reality was a harsh blow. Home and away, Barcelona had been thoroughly outclassed, suffering the indignity of a double defeat.

It was a result none of them could have anticipated—or accepted.
