Chapter 793: A New Record
"Manchester United moves the ball to the right side, passing it to Bruno."
"Bruno has the ball at the right corner of the box, one-on-one!"
"Brilliant! Bruno reaches the byline and crosses into the box!"
"Leicester City's center-back Morgan takes control at the near post and clears with a big kick."
"Another long clearance from midfield…"
...
With two successive clearances, Leicester City quickly pushed the ball near the halfway line.
At the back, United's center-back Harry Maguire calmly controlled the ball and immediately sent it back into Leicester's half, finding João Cancelo on the right wing.
Cancelo received the ball and glanced up toward the penalty area, noticing a key development.
After clearing the ball earlier, Morgan had not immediately returned to mark Harry Kane. This left the English striker matched up against Leicester's 22-year-old defender James Justin.
Justin, standing at 1.83 meters, was known for his technical skills and ball distribution but lacked an edge in aerial duels.
Recognizing this, Cancelo adjusted his positioning, and with a precise 45-degree cross, he lofted the ball toward Kane in the box.
Kane immediately moved toward Justin, leaping high to overpower the Leicester defender and direct a header toward the bottom right corner, aiming to catch goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel off guard.
However, Cancelo's cross had traveled a long distance, giving both Schmeichel and Morgan time to react.
Schmeichel sprang into action, punching the ball away with one hand.
A Swift Reaction
Kane's header from the left-center of the goal sent the ball rebounding sharply toward the right side of the penalty area.
Bruno, already anticipating the play, rushed into the box as the ball bounced into his path. Without waiting for Morgan to close him down, Bruno swung his right foot with precision, opting for an inside-foot strike to ensure accuracy.
The ball shot forward in a near-perfect straight line, bypassing the sprawled Schmeichel and smashing into the back of the net.
"GOOOAAALLLLLLLLLL!!!"
"BRUNO FERNANDES SCORES!!!"
As the first half neared its conclusion, Bruno seized the opportunity with composure, netting on his fifth attempt of the match.
Overcome with emotion, Bruno sprinted off the pitch, leaping over the advertising boards to celebrate with the fans in the stands.
1–0!
He had finally broken the deadlock!
Jubilation and Milestones
"What a goal!"
"That was a sudden strike! But we have to say, Manchester United's perseverance in the first half has finally paid off!"
"Bruno Fernandes, with his fifth shot of the match, has found the back of the net!"
"This goal marks Bruno's 41st league goal of the season, tying the record he set in the 2017–2018 Premier League season for most goals scored in a single campaign!"
As his teammates swarmed him in celebration, Bruno shouted breathlessly, "There's still another half! There's still another half!"
The first goal was always the hardest, but Bruno believed that once they broke Leicester's defense, more opportunities would come.
As Leicester's players tired and their concentration waned, their defense would inevitably falter. Bruno was confident the second half would bring more chances.
Leicester's Threat
Leicester City had been exceptional this season, thanks to both their solid defense and their potent attack.
Over the first 37 rounds, Leicester had scored 67 goals, ranking fourth in the league behind Manchester United, Manchester City, and Liverpool.
Much of this success was owed to their talismanic striker, Jamie Vardy. The 33-year-old forward had already netted 23 goals this season, placing him second in the Premier League's scoring charts, behind only Bruno Fernandes.
Since Leicester's promotion to the Premier League, Vardy had been a consistent force. In his debut season, he recorded five goals and eight assists in 34 matches, helping Leicester avoid relegation.
The following year, during Leicester's miraculous 2015–2016 title-winning campaign, Vardy scored 24 goals and provided six assists in 36 games, finishing second in the scoring charts behind Harry Kane.
Although Leicester's overall form dipped in subsequent seasons, Vardy remained a consistent threat, recording 13, 20, and 18 goals over the next three seasons.
Facing a team spearheaded by Vardy, no defense could guarantee a clean sheet. This meant United's slender one-goal lead was far from secure.
Second Half Intentions
When the second half began, United returned to the pitch with one goal in mind: to extend their lead and seal the victory early.
Knowing Leicester's attacking prowess, Mourinho urged his players to maintain their focus, press high, and seek a second goal to avoid leaving the result to chance.
The battle was far from over, and every move in the second half would determine the fate of the Premier League trophy.
Bruno had the same determination as the second half began, displaying relentless energy as he tirelessly searched for opportunities. To evade Leicester City's defenders, he frequently shifted from his central position to both flanks.
However, Leicester City was prepared for this. They treated Bruno with utmost caution, guarding him vigilantly. Despite trailing by one goal, they refused to give Manchester United—and especially Bruno—even the slightest opening.
Meanwhile, Chelsea had taken a 2–0 lead over Wolves at Stamford Bridge, virtually ending Leicester's hopes of qualifying for the Champions League for the first time in four years.
At this point, Leicester was no longer fighting for victory or points. They were playing for honor and professionalism.
They were willing to concede goals or even lose, but they demanded that Bruno and United demonstrate their very best to earn it.
United's players, including Harry Kane, kept running tirelessly. Kane actively moved wide or dropped back to pull defenders out of position and create space for Bruno.
Since joining United, Kane's performances had been solid, thanks in large part to the numerous assists provided by Bruno.
Bruno's strong rapport with his teammates made them eager to help him during critical moments.
The Opportunity Arrives
Bruno's chance came quickly.
In the 70th minute, Leicester City made a midfield passing error, losing possession before the ball crossed the halfway line.
Kanté intercepted the ball and immediately delivered a direct pass to Harry Kane. Kane, using his physical strength, shielded the ball from the defender before passing it to the left, where Rashford was waiting.
At the same time, Bruno, now positioned on the left flank, looked poised to strike, like a predator ready to pounce.
"United intercept the ball and launch a counterattack."
"Harry Kane passes to Rashford."
"Rashford threads a through ball behind the defense…"
"Bruno takes off in full sprint…"
"Leicester's center-back sprints back quickly and gets in front of Bruno."
Bruno, now at the left edge of the penalty area, faced Leicester's center-back and former United player, Jonny Evans, in a one-on-one duel.
The moment Evans approached, Bruno feinted as if to cross toward the byline but abruptly cut inside with a quick touch.
The instant he sidestepped Evans, Bruno instinctively swung his right foot, firing a powerful shot.
The ball, spinning fiercely, curved beautifully before grazing the fingertips of Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel and slamming into the top right corner of the net.
A perfect finish! An absolute top-corner goal!
A Record-Breaking Goal
Bruno erupted in celebration, sprinting off the pitch and straight toward the live television camera. His elation was palpable as he thumped his chest repeatedly, shouting silently but confidently:
"I did it! I really did it!"
With this goal, Bruno reached 42 league goals, breaking his own Premier League single-season record.
A Moment of Triumph
His teammates swarmed around him, hugging him tightly. Each one shouted in his ear, congratulating him on his historic achievement.
"This was a true top-corner goal!"
"Bruno's 42nd league goal this season is simply stunning. Leicester goalkeeper Schmeichel had no chance!"
"Congratulations to Bruno for breaking the Premier League single-season scoring record he set two years ago!"
"To all United fans and viewers at home, let's give Bruno the loudest applause and cheers to celebrate his incredible feat!"
"Bruno has also become the first player in Premier League history to win the Golden Boot four consecutive seasons, surpassing legends Alan Shearer and Thierry Henry!"
"In the history of England's top flight, Bruno is now tied for fourth-most Golden Boot wins. Only Jimmy Greaves (6 titles) stands ahead, alongside other greats like Dave Halliday, Steve Bloomer, and Henry, who each have 4 titles."
"Moreover, Bruno is only the second player in England's top-flight history to score at least 40 league goals in two separate seasons. The other? Everton legend Dixie Dean, who famously netted 60 goals in the 1927–28 season—a record that still stands across Europe's top leagues."
"Dean later scored 44 goals in the 1931–32 season, though it's worth noting that his era featured 42-match seasons, with significantly less competitive intensity than today."
"Since joining United, Bruno has scored no fewer than 38 league goals each season. For perspective, no other Premier League player has ever surpassed 32 league goals in a single season during this period. Bruno's dominance is almost incomprehensible!"
"And now, with 20 minutes left in the match, perhaps we should continue to cheer Bruno on. Who knows? He might score again!"
