Chapter 799: Duel of the Kings
August 15, 8:00 PM.
Cristiano Ronaldo stood in the center circle of Lisbon's Estádio da Luz, waiting for kickoff.
This was the final match of the Champions League quarterfinals, a highly anticipated showdown: Juventus vs. Manchester United.
In the wake of the shocking 8–2 rout of Barcelona by Bayern Munich just a day earlier, both Juventus and Manchester United took this match with the utmost seriousness.
For Ronaldo, this match was deeply personal.
In this game, Ronaldo partnered with Gonzalo Higuaín as a dual-striker setup, while Bruno Fernandes played as the attacking midfielder. At the kickoff, Bruno was positioned close to Ronaldo.
Before the match, the two Portuguese stars had exchanged polite handshakes and some casual conversation in the players' tunnel.
But now, as Ronaldo glanced at Bruno, his gaze was filled with a fierce challenge.
Bruno returned the look, equally unyielding.
Their locked eyes sparked an unspoken rivalry, and the atmosphere of the entire stadium was electric with tension.
This wasn't just a football match—it was a war between the two Portuguese kings of the modern game.
Due to pandemic restrictions, local fans were left disappointed, unable to witness this monumental clash in person, instead relegated to watching the broadcast from home.
The Match Begins
"The match is about to start!"
"The referee for this game is Dutch official Danny Makkelie."
"During the coin toss, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes won the choice of sides over Juventus captain Bonucci. As a result, Juventus will kick off."
"Both teams have fielded their strongest lineups, underscoring just how crucial this match is to both sides."
At the sound of Makkelie's whistle, the match commenced, with Juventus taking the opening kick and United immediately pressing high up the pitch.
"United looks aggressive from the get-go, applying intense pressure in the opening minutes."
"Juventus' passing was intercepted—United quickly transitions into attack, shifting the ball to the left."
"Luke Shaw takes possession… goes for a long shot—"
"Oh, that was rushed! Luke Shaw's shot came from a bit too far out, clearly hasty. United needs to stay calm and composed at this stage."
"United is attacking again—Cancelo delivers a cross from the right."
"The ball switches to the left… Bruno takes control—what a beautiful touch… he sends it into the box!"
"Harry Kane couldn't trap it cleanly! Bonucci and De Ligt close in swiftly to neutralize the threat."
"Juventus remains solid at the back in the early stages."
"Another attack from United! They're orchestrating yet another offensive move."
"Bentancur intercepts—Juventus launches a counterattack, feeding the ball to Higuaín."
"Higuaín takes a shot on the volley inside the box, but it deflects off Maguire and goes out for a corner. Maguire's block was crucial there!"
"Juventus earns their first corner kick of the game."
Ronaldo Strikes Early
Miralem Pjanić stepped up to take the corner, calmly placing the ball before stepping back.
United manager José Mourinho stood on the touchline, barking instructions, signaling his players to stay alert.
Bruno Fernandes remained stationed near midfield, ready to spring forward for a counterattack.
As Pjanić swiftly delivered the corner, chaos erupted in the penalty area.
Juventus players scrambled to break free from their markers, while United defenders frantically tracked their opponents. The focus was heavily on towering threats like Bonucci and De Ligt.
Yet amid the commotion, a black-and-white blur emerged from the pack. Ronaldo, leaping higher than anyone else, connected perfectly with the ball. His powerful header redirected the ball toward the bottom-left corner of the net.
From such close range and with little warning, David de Gea could do nothing to stop it.
"GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOALLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!"
"It's in! Juventus takes the lead in the fifth minute, and who else but Cristiano Ronaldo with the header!"
"What a brilliant goal! In a sea of towering defenders, Ronaldo positioned himself perfectly to claim the best spot for the ball and scored with precision."
"This was Juventus' first real threat of the match, and they've made it count, scoring on just their second shot."
"Let's take another look at the goal: Pjanić's corner deceived many, drawing attention toward Bonucci and De Ligt. But in the confusion, Ronaldo slipped free. It's an unforgivable lapse from United's defense, given Ronaldo's well-documented aerial prowess."
Ronaldo celebrated with unrestrained passion, his trademark leap punctuating the moment as he let out a thunderous "SIUUU!" The Juventus bench erupted in cheers, while Mourinho wore a frustrated expression on the sidelines, shouting instructions to his defenders.
Bruno Fernandes stood near the halfway line, visibly annoyed, clapping his hands to rally his teammates and urging them to regain focus.
The battle between the two Portuguese kings had only just begun.
Following his goal, Cristiano Ronaldo refrained from celebrating, a gesture of respect for his former club, Manchester United.
Bruno Fernandes, visibly frustrated, wiped his face.
The game was only five minutes in, and he hadn't even broken a sweat, yet his team was already trailing—courtesy of a goal from Ronaldo, no less. This left him with a bitter taste.
Bruno had immense respect for his Portuguese national teammate and United predecessor, but that didn't mean he was willing to concede defeat in front of Ronaldo.
Standing on opposite sides of the pitch, they were opponents, and Bruno was determined to give everything he had to help United win.
Although the goal wasn't his fault—his role was to position himself for counterattacks and play high up the pitch—he couldn't help but feel aggrieved.
On the sidelines, José Mourinho was equally animated, visibly displeased with the goal but quick to reorganize United's defensive structure to address the early setback.
Juventus Pushes Forward
When play resumed, Juventus seized the momentum and pressed hard, looking to capitalize further.
Ronaldo, in particular, seemed invigorated by his goal. Shortly after, he collected the ball on the left flank and, despite being surrounded by three United defenders, pushed forward on his own to carve out a low shot from 26 meters, though it lacked the power to trouble De Gea.
Moments later, Gonzalo Higuaín drifted to the right wing, exploiting the space behind Luke Shaw, and delivered a cross into the box. Ronaldo met it with another header, but this time, De Gea easily claimed the ball.
Two minutes later, Ronaldo attempted a central breakthrough, forcing his way toward the edge of the box. His shot deflected out for a corner, which Miralem Pjanić delivered from the right. However, United's defense, now more alert, saw Harry Maguire clear the danger with a header.
Juventus retained possession, and after a brief reorganization, Pjanić swung in another cross from the right. Ronaldo connected with a volley 12 meters out, but the ball narrowly missed the target.
Juventus seemed unstoppable, attacking relentlessly and testing United's defense. But Mourinho's defensive organization, honed over four years, began to shine through. Aside from occasional lapses from Luke Shaw, Juventus struggled to exploit United's backline.
Patient Defense and Strategic Pressing
United tightened their defense in the midfield and backline while keeping their forwards active in pressuring Juventus' defenders.
Bruno Fernandes, as always, covered significant ground. Despite the early goal, he remained composed, aware that conceding first had been accounted for in United's pre-match plans. The coaching staff had even devised strategies for how to play if they fell two goals behind.
With these contingencies in mind, Bruno stayed patient. He knew that if United held firm defensively, Juventus would eventually make mistakes.
As Franz Beckenbauer once said:
"In football, the strongest point is often the weakest."
As Ronaldo dazzled with individual brilliance, it became clear that Juventus' offense relied heavily on him. Mourinho recognized this and adjusted United's defensive tactics accordingly.
Ronaldo's relentless focus on creating chances often led him to take shots himself rather than involving his teammates. This made United's defensive task more straightforward while leaving some of Juventus' players visibly frustrated.
It was hard to tell if Juventus' other players were out of form or simply overshadowed by Ronaldo's dominance. Whatever the case, Juventus' attack devolved into a one-man show, which often ended in hurried shots or blocked attempts.
"Football is a team game played by 11 players," remarked Gary Lineker, commentating for the BBC.
"No individual can carry an entire team. Maybe the Ronaldo of a decade ago—or even five years ago—could have, but at 35, despite his incredible fitness, Ronaldo lacks the explosiveness he once had. He needs to integrate into the team's system more effectively."
Bruno's Steady Leadership
Bruno Fernandes continued to search for opportunities. With Juventus pushing forward and committing resources to attack, much of United's counterattacking responsibility fell squarely on his shoulders.
Bruno expanded his range of movement, seamlessly integrating into United's structure while excelling when the team needed his individual skills—whether through dribbling, passing, or orchestrating the attack.
Roughly ten minutes after conceding, United began to stabilize. The team rediscovered its rhythm, and the defensive midfield duo of N'Golo Kanté and Fred provided excellent cover, while the center-back pairing adapted to Juventus' reliance on crosses.
Though Ronaldo remained a constant threat, his efforts increasingly resembled solo performances and posed limited danger to De Gea's goal.
