In a faintly lit room, Christian sat relaxed on a sofa. A low table nearby carried two drinks and a few snacks, its presence halflost in the shadows that filled most of the space.
He held his phone in one hand, reading the first two messages Nina had ever sent him, one eyebrow raised in mild surprise. His other hand moved absentmindedly through Anastasia's hair, occasionally brushing against her cheek as she lay with her head resting comfortably on his thigh.
It had been more than a year since he had last seen Nina. Even if she hadn't contacted him herself, Christian had already been considering asking her to come see him. Interestingly, she had ended up doing it on her own.
What business could she have with him?
Christian was curious, but he didn't dwell on it for long. Whatever she wanted, he would find out when she came.
For now, he returned to the novel on his phone.
