Chapter 40 - The Costume

Both Sanchez and Zoey sat with dark expressions, their moods equally foul.

And beneath the anger was humiliation.

Not only because their bodies had been permanently damaged, but because the culprit had clearly been toying with them.

The framing methods had been absurdly crude.

The killer had deliberately forced two victims to face each other and compare their suffering.

Whoever did this was probably laughing somewhere.

Recently, the White family had devoted nearly all their attention to the game.

Every family member had entered the game, and after the beta ended, they immediately began searching everywhere for information on other players.

They especially sought out Divine Gifts related to divination and prophecy.

The evidence had long vanished.

The only remaining option was relying on supernatural means.

Unfortunately, after finally locating a player with a divination-type Divine Gift, they discovered the culprit could not be traced at all.

Now that the two families sat down and exchanged information, they quickly reached the same conclusion.

The culprit must hold grudges against both the Lopez family and the White family.

As for the dead White family driver, he was probably nothing more than a disposable accomplice silenced afterward.

The older generation began investigating everyone who had conflicts with both families.

Meanwhile, the younger generation cooperated, using Divine Gifts to search for clues.

Which was why Zoey had approached Rita.

The buzz-cut young man possessed a divination-type Divine Gift, and Zoey wanted Rita to boost his Luck and see whether that changed anything.

The result, however, was obvious.

Still nothing.

Although the young man failed to divine any information, his luck that day became absurdly good.

On his way home, he casually bought a lottery ticket while passing a convenience store and actually won.

The matter was immediately reported to Sanchez.

And naturally, Sanchez later mentioned it to Zoey during conversation, partly because she wanted to gather more information about Rita.

After all, Rita's Divine Gift was genuinely useful.

Eventually, someone would need it again.

In truth, Sanchez had already known about this Divine Gift long ago.

Back when she possessed the Chávez Eye, after the first beta test ended, she had used it on everyone in the White family.

Naturally, she had seen driver Daniel White's Divine Gift as well.

She simply chose not to publicize it at the time.

Instead, she privately informed the family patriarch about the game while quietly observing whether Daniel would develop dangerous ambitions after gaining supernatural power.

Before she could test him properly, however, he died.

So even now, hearing Rita mention a Divine Gift with the same name and abilities, Sanchez did not suspect anything.

After all, it was merely a B rank talent.

And its current owner had only become a player during the second beta.

In Sanchez's mind, it worked just like game mechanics.

Once the previous owner died, [Wheel of Fate] probably returned to the Divine Gift pool to be drawn again.

Or perhaps lower-ranked Divine Gifts simply lacked uniqueness altogether.

Not everyone could be a chosen prodigy like her and draw an S rank Divine Gift.

The White family alone had nearly a thousand players now.

And so far, she remained the only one with an S rank talent.

Most importantly, the White family had already confirmed something critical.

Divine Gifts could not be stolen by killing their owners.

Because of this, Sanchez never connected Rita, an insignificant nobody she had never even met before, with her family's incidents.

That evening, Rita received a message from Zoey.

"Looking forward to working together more in the future~"

Rita was not remotely surprised by Zoey's reaction.

One million dollars for six hours of Luck 10 was absolutely worth it.

The very next day, she pocketed the money and headed out.

She rented a small yacht and went out to sea.

The ocean was an incredible location for Phantom Shift escapes.

Safe, hidden, and almost as useful as a secret base.

Nobody would witness her appearing there.

And in the future, if she ever killed someone, she could teleport there afterward, clean away evidence, then leave again.

Afterward, Zoey periodically contacted her to buff people with [Wheel of Fate].

And naturally, Rita never hid the changes from her targets.

Honestly, she practically wanted to grab a loudspeaker and shout:

"Congratulations! Your Luck stat is 10 now!"

Over time, her reputation spread through wealthy social circles.

At the same time, however, her rules became equally well known.

She only granted good fortune.

Never bad luck.

Technically, Rita could have simply claimed her Divine Gift only allowed her to raise Luck values.

But that would make her seem too harmless.

Too perfect.

People would become suspicious.

Besides, future dungeon raids would absolutely require using the skill offensively against monsters.

So from the beginning, she had no intention of hiding the darker side of it.

Ironically, her rules extinguished much of the hostility toward her.

Some people privately approached her with offers reaching twenty million dollars, hoping she would break her principles.

She refused every single one.

Eventually, everyone accepted it.

People merely thought she was clever, cautious, and knew her place.

More importantly, she was technically tied to the Lopez family now.

That alone made her difficult to target.

Even Rita herself had not expected the very skill that ruined her previous life to become her money printer in this one.

With the third beta now over, she no longer worried much about others discovering she was a player.

The Lopez family and the wealthy people benefiting from her Divine Gift would protect her interests.

Her talent lacked offensive power but remained uniquely useful.

Just like divination, someone somewhere would eventually need it.

And unlike many players hiding their abilities, Rita openly treated hers as a business.

Anyone could approach her at any time.

Even if cannon fodder became necessary someday, nobody would push her forward first.

Most importantly, there were countless powerless players with no backing whatsoever.

No one would waste energy targeting someone connected to multiple elite families.

Rita now earned money far faster than during her celebrity career.

And whenever conducting transactions, she accepted cash only.

Even though many of these wealthy clients had far easier access to rare weapons than she did, she still preferred buying things herself afterward.

What if the item mutated later?

It was basically like buying a lottery ticket.

Imagine someone owed her two dollars.

Instead of repaying her directly, they bought a random lottery ticket and handed it over.

Then later, the ticket won millions.

People would not think Rita had foresight.

They would think Rita stole their luck.

If a weapon they gave her later mutated into something valuable after the game invasion, then if it was merely average, fine.

But if it turned into a top-tier item?

They might demand it back.

Honestly, Rita felt she herself would probably be furious in that situation too.

Nowadays, she spent two or three hours a day using her Divine Gift to earn side income.

She saved every dollar.

Toward the end of November, she planned another trip to Thailand.

That place had countless bizarre supernatural artifacts and occult items.

She wanted to stockpile some and gamble on future mutations.

But before that, there was one thing she wanted to recover first.

An old costume from her acting days.

Back when she first debuted, she had played a female shadow guard hopelessly in love with the male lead in a historical drama.

The series had thirty-six episodes.

For thirty-five of them, she wore the same black outfit and boots.

It had been a low-budget production.

Unexpectedly, though, the drama became a modest hit.

And Rita rose to fame because of it, climbing from complete rookie to a recognizable third-tier actress.

Popular dramas often sold off costumes afterward to recover production costs.

One of Rita's fans had bought that costume years ago.

Later, during her previous life, after Rita became buried beneath endless scandals and online hate, that fan sadly gave up supporting her and sold the costume away.

Then after the game invaded reality, the outfit mutated into an extremely powerful blue-grade equipment set.
