Chapter 158 - SCATTERED LEAVES, ANCHORED SOULS (THE BLACK DEVIL'S PAST: PART IX)

"Sakura, hold still—"

His voice wasn't a low, gravelly, fake whisper anymore. It came out in his perfectly natural tone—clear, smooth, deeply comforting, and filled with a gentle, protective authority that he had used a thousand times in his own timeline.

The words hung in the icy air of the alley.

Time froze.

Minato's soul practically left his body. His hands snapped back from her back as if he had just touched a roaring fire. Underneath his heavy hood, his eyes went completely wide, and a wave of pure, unadulterated panic crashed over him.

'Oh my goodness! I said it! I actually said her name!' Minato screamed inside his head, his heart hammering so hard he thought it would burst right through his ribs.

'What is wrong with me?! Why did I just speak?! My instincts just took over because she looked hurt! Oh no, oh no, Sasuke is going to absolutely destroy me for ruining the timeline! I am dead, I am so dead!'

He immediately clamped his mouth shut, locking his jaw tightly, and went completely silent, desperately praying he could magically turn invisible.

In front of him, Sakura went entirely rigid. Her green eyes widened in absolute shock, staring blankly at the stone wall. The pain in her back was completely forgotten. Her mind began to race at a million miles an hour.

'Wait...' Sakura thought, her chest tightening as a chill ran down her spine. 'Did he... did he just say my name?'

Slowly, very carefully, she began to turn her head around. Her gaze was incredibly sharp, fixed intensely on the dark shadow of his hood.

"How... how do you know my name?" she asked, her voice guarded, heavy with sudden suspense and deep suspicion.

Minato didn't move an inch. He kept his face tilted down toward the snow, his brain working frantically to find a way out of this disaster. He couldn't speak to fix it, because speaking again would only make it worse.

'Think, Minato, think!' he panicked internally, sweat pouring down his face. 'How do I fix this without talking? Wait... her hair! Yes! Her hair is bright pink! It looks exactly like cherry blossoms!'

'It's a completely common thing for someone to look at a pink-haired girl and just call her 'Sakura' as a nickname or a guess! Please let her think that! Please let her think I was just making a comment about her hair!'

He forced his body to remain perfectly still, acting as cold and unbothered as a statue, hiding the absolute chaos screaming inside his mind.

Sakura kept staring at his cloaked figure, her eyebrows furrowed as the silence stretched between them. She was deeply confused.

'Wait a minute...' she thought, starting to question her own ears.

'Did he really say my name? Or did I just overhear it wrong because of the loud wind and the shouting people in the market? The wind is whistling really loudly against these stone pillars... and my back was hurting a lot. Maybe my mind is just playing tricks on me because I'm so stressed and tired.'

She looked closely at his steady, silent posture. He wasn't acting like someone who had just slipped up; he was completely quiet, totally unreadable.

'Yeah... that must be it,' Sakura told herself, though a small, lingering feeling of doubt stayed in her chest.

'There is no way a random, masked ninja in Tetsu no Kuni would know who I am. I must be losing my mind from exhaustion. But still... why did that voice feel so strangely familiar for a split second?'

Minato slowly raised his hands again, keeping his hood pulled low, and gently returned his palms to her back.

He restarted the green medical chakra, completely silent now, but mentally sighing with a massive wave of relief.

'That was too close,' Minato thought, his heart slowly calming down as he focused entirely on finishing the task before she could analyze him any further.

'No more talking. Absolutely no more talking.'

He tried hard to stop his hands from shaking, keeping his chakra flat and hard to read.

'But still...!!!'

'...Why in the whole world did I have to run into Sakura?! Out of all the kids from Konoha, why her?! Couldn't it have been someone gentle like Hinata? She would've politely thanked me and left… But no, I get the one who demands a precise medical treatment!'

Minato's internal screaming reached a crescendo as he desperately looked around the snowy corner, praying for a miracle.

'Where the hell are you, Sasukeee?! You're the one who is supposed to be managing this timeline! Come save me from her before she realizes my voice is completely fake and shatters my ribs!'

Minato slowly pulled his hands back as the injury in her spine vanished completely, leaving her at full strength. He quickly hid his arms back inside his cloak and tilted his head away as Sakura began to turn around to look at him.

"Thank you," Sakura said softly, her voice still carrying that sharp edge of suspicion as she swung her legs around to face him completely.

She purposefully moved a bit slower this time, her green eyes wide and intensely focused, trying to catch any small detail she could under his heavy hood.

She looked at the fit of his dark traveler's cloak, the specific width of his shoulders, and the way his hands immediately disappeared back into his sleeves. She was practically begging him to make another sound, to say even a single word, so she could compare it to the voice she thought she had just overheard.

But Minato was a legendary Hokage for a reason. His short-circuiting panic from a moment ago was completely locked away behind decades of elite shinobi training. He didn't say a word. He didn't even breathe heavily.

Instead, he simply gave her a slow, respectful nod—the universal sign of a silent traveler acknowledging a patient.

Before Sakura could open her mouth to question him further, the rhythmic, heavy thudding of iron-soled boots echoed from the main street.

"Search the alleys!" a loud Samurai voice roared over the whistling wind. "The intruders split up near the market! Leave no corner unchecked!"

Sakura's head snapped toward the opening of the alleyway, her instincts instantly shifting back into combat mode. Her hand dropped straight to her kunai pouch. 'Darn it, they're already here!' she thought, her teeth clenched.

That one-second distraction was exactly what Minato was waiting for. It was the perfect, natural window he needed to escape without making a sound or leaving a trace.

By the time Sakura turned her gaze back to the snow directly in front of her, the tall traveler was completely gone.

There was no puff of smoke. There was no sound of rushing wind. He hadn't even kicked up a single flurry of white powder.

The space where the cloaked ninja had been kneeling just a fraction of a second ago was entirely empty, leaving behind nothing but two perfectly neat knee prints pressed into the cold snow.

Sakura blinked in absolute bewilderment, her hand freezing on her kunai pouch as she stared at the empty space.

'He... he's gone?' her mind raced, a chill running down her spine that had nothing to do with the winter weather.

'I didn't even see him move. My eyes were right on him! To disappear that fast without a single hand sign or a flicker of chakra... who on earth was that?'

She slowly stood up, testing her back. It felt perfectly light, completely healed, and brimming with a warm, steady energy.

She looked up at the grey, cloudy sky, a deep sense of mystery settling over her chest as the wind howled against the stone pillars.

She couldn't shake the lingering feeling that this strange town was hiding secrets far bigger than a simple mission.

But with the heavy clanking of Samurai armor getting closer by the second, she knew she couldn't stay a minute any longer. Turning on her heel, she sprinted into the deeper shadows of the alley, moving to regroup with the others.

While the shopkeeper was busy dealing with the Samurais, Tenten was having a much rougher time on the other side of the street.

She was lying flat on her back in a thick drift of snow, her breath hitching as the cold seeped through her clothes, turning the fabric dark, heavy, and soaking wet.

"Ow... my head," she muttered, squeezing her eyes shut as the five-story drop left her brain rattling.

Suddenly, a firm, warm grip closed around her hand. Tenten's eyes snapped open to see Neji leaning into view. Without a word, he hoisted her effortlessly onto her feet. Even though she stumbled on the ice, he didn't let go, keeping his fingers steady and warm against her cold palm.

Neji glanced at the chaos, leaned in close, and whispered, "Don't fall behind."

With a sharp tug, he pivoted on his heel and began to sprint toward the dark mouth of an alleyway.

"NEJI!!!"

The shout ripped through the air. It was Naruto, standing in the middle of the ruined market, his chest heaving. "Where the hell are you going, leaving us behind?!"

Neji didn't slow down or turn his head. "Run anywhere!" he screamed back over the whistling wind. "Just get out of here!"

Naruto's hands curled into tight fists as a hot, stinging anger bubbled in his chest. 'Is he serious?' Naruto thought, a sharp pang of betrayal hitting his heart.

'After everything we've been through, he just grabs Tenten and runs alone dattebayo? No plan, no teamwork... just running away?'

To Naruto, seeing the 'most responsible person' do this felt like a punch to the gut.

Then, his eyes darted to the side. Sasuke was adjusting his grip on Mini-Sasuke, his body already angled away.

"Sasuke!" Naruto yelled, his voice cracking with emotion. "You too? Are you guys really going to leave us alone here?!"

Sasuke paused for only a heartbeat, his dark eyes meeting Naruto's. "Naruto, there is no time. Just run."

"But where?!" Naruto cried out to the hostile crowd. "Where are we supposed to go dattebayo?!"

"Just anywhere!" Sasuke called back, fading into the shadows. "We will regroup later!"

Naruto stood frozen, a bright orange target in a grey world. He watched his friends scatter like leaves, and a cold, heavy feeling of loneliness settled deep in his stomach.

'So that's how it is,' Naruto thought bitterly. 'When things get real, everyone just looks out for themselves. Neji, Sasuke... they don't care about the group.'

A mocking, sad smile touched his lips—a lonely, hollow expression. He looked down at the snow, his vision blurring slightly.

"Shame on me..." he muttered to himself, his voice barely a whisper.

'Shame on me for thinking this group was actually a team. I guess I'm still just that kid on the swing... all alone.'

He felt like a complete fool. He stood there in the freezing slush, entirely ready to give up.

"NARUTO!"

The blinding white snow of the Tetsu no Kuni blizzard cut through the narrow, dead-end alleyways behind the central market, reducing visibility to a mere few feet.

Pressed tightly against a freezing stone wall, Hinata's breath came in ragged, white puffs. Her shoulders were pulled in, and her fingers trembled as she forced her hands into the traditional Gentle Fist stance.

Her knuckles were stark white against the grey, dim morning light. Her chakra felt dangerously low, still strained from the chaotic five-story drop from the Grand Pavilion, and her vision blurred slightly as the howling wind whipped her violet hair across her face.

In front of her, five elite Samurai from the Border Patrol advanced slowly, their heavy, iron-plated armor clanking ominously against the frozen ice.

Their katanas were already drawn, the polished steel gleaming dully under the clouded sky as waves of sharp, blue chakra vibrated along the edges of the blades.

"Nowhere left to run, little ninja," the lead Samurai rumbled, his voice muffled behind his heavy iron faceplate. He leveled the tip of his katana directly at her chest. "Surrender quietly, or we will clear you from this street by force."

Hinata swallowed hard, her heart hammering violently against her ribs. She took a half-step back, but her heel hit the unyielding, rock-hard stone of the dead-end wall.

She was completely trapped, outnumbered, and entirely alone in the freezing slush.

The leader didn't wait. With a harsh grunt, he lunged forward, his katana slicing through the falling snow in a swift, lethal downward arc meant to completely disable her. Hinata instinctively closed her eyes, bracing her arms in front of her face as the whistling wind of the blade neared her skin.

CLANG!!!

The sound of metal colliding was so violent, so deafeningly sharp, that it echoed off the narrow stone walls like a localized explosion.

The lethal downward swing never touched her.

A massive, towering shadow had descended from the grey sky like a dark, sudden meteor, crashing straight onto the ice directly in front of Hinata.

The sheer force of the landing sent a violent wave of white powder exploding outward, instantly blinding the guards.

Standing right between Hinata and the blades was a tall, imposing figure wrapped in a massive, travel-worn dark cloak. He hadn't even drawn a sword. With his left arm raised beneath the heavy fabric, he had effortlessly blocked the heavy, chakra-infused katana using nothing but the hidden, reinforced gauntlet on his forearm.

The air in the alleyway went instantly dead silent. The whistling wind seemed to drop, and the heavy atmosphere became thick, heavy, and suffocating with a sudden spike of raw, unreadable power.

The Samurai leader's eyes bulged behind his helmet as his blade remained completely frozen against the stranger's arm, unable to move an inch forward.

"What... what on earth are you?!" the guard stammered, his boots slipping back on the ice as the stranger's mere presence began to push him backward.

Underneath the deep, impenetrable shadow of his heavy hood, the mysterious traveler didn't say a single word. He stood there like an immovable stone wall, shielding the small, frightened girl behind him completely from the rest of the world.

Hinata opened her mouth, her voice small but steady. "Who... who are you?"

Before the traveler could even attempt to respond, a harsh, ragged cough echoed from the snowbank at the mouth of the alley. The lead Samurai was desperately trying to push himself back up onto his knees, his heavy iron armor dented from the force of the blast.

He gripped his shattered katana with a trembling hand, his faceplate covered in slush as he glared at the dark figure with pure, terrified rage.

"You... you monster..." the guard wheezed, his voice shaking violently over the howling wind.

"Interfering with the military jurisdiction of Tetsu no Kuni... attacking the Border Patrol... identify yourself! Who the hell are you?!"

The towering traveler stayed completely silent for a long moment. He slowly turned his head back toward the mouth of the alley, his long, dramatic shadow stretching across the frozen stone walls.

With a slow, deliberate movement, he reached up with his single gloved hand and adjusted the edge of his heavy hood. He didn't run. He didn't hide. He just stood there like a god of the dark sky, an absolute enigma wrapped in a travel-worn cloak.

He tilted his face just enough for the dim morning light to catch the sharp, aristocratic line of his jaw.

"Then..." his voice rang out through the freezing air, smooth, incredibly cold, and heavy with an ancient, terrifying authority.

"Allow me to introduce myself—"
