Chapter 275 - Chapter 272. The Hedgehog Man

Chapter 272. The Hedgehog Man

The night air was a cold, biting caress against Noah's skin as he descended through the gloom. With the silent grace of a predatory bird, he glided down from the urban heights, his boots meeting the cracked asphalt of a narrow alleyway with a muffled thud. Nearby, the subject of his curiosity—a man Noah had already dubbed the «Hedgehog»—was far too preoccupied to notice his new guest.

The alley reeked of copper and stagnant waste. The Hedgehog was hunched over a pile of broken bodies, his fingers dancing feverishly through the pockets of the small-time thugs he had just slaughtered. He moved with a twitchy, manic energy, his eyes darting hungrily between wallets and loose watches.

The nickname was more than just a whim; it was a literal description of the nightmare before him. Thich, needle-sharp quills erupted from the man's skin, piercing through his clothes and even sprouting from the jagged contours of his face. The corpses at his feet were a testament to his lethality—they were riddled with hundreds of tiny, weeping puncture wounds. The most unfortunate of the group looked like a human pincushion, the victim of a «warm embrace» that had turned into a perforated death sentence.

Watching the gruesome scene, Noah tilted his head, a faint glimmer of intrigue in his dark eyes. He reached up, tapping the discreet comms unit nestled in his ear to activate his link with Lissandra. Though he hadn't donned his full combat suit for this excursion, his auxiliary gear—the sleek headphones and the multifunctional utility belt—remained a marvel of integration.

From the center of his belt, a slender, crystalline beam of light lanced out. It swept over the Hedgehog's hunched form in a silent blink of emerald radiance, performing a deep-tissue and biometric scan.

[Subject: Male, Korean descent, 27 years old. Name: [Data Not Found]. Criminal Record: Multiple convictions for violent felonies, including aggravated assault and manslaughter...]

The cold, synthesized voice of the AI echoed in Noah's ear, laying bare the man's sordid history.

«Well now, what a charming little 'gift of fate' I've stumbled upon,» Noah murmured to himself, the corners of his mouth twitching into a wry, dangerous smile. Any lingering hesitation about intervening vanished. Knowing the Hedgehog's criminal past made the upcoming 'disposal' feel less like a chore and more like public service.

Throughout the entire process, the killer remained oblivious. Noah's communication with Lissandra occurred on a sub-vocal, neural level, leaving the alley in a heavy, oppressive silence.

Ahem.

Noah cleared his throat, the sound echoing off the damp brick walls like a gunshot.

«Ah?!» The Hedgehog spun around with a violent start, his quills rattling like dry bone. His gaze darted frantically toward the source of the noise until it landed on Noah, who stood framed by the dim light of the streetlamp at the alley's mouth.

«You got a death wish, kid?!» the man snarled, his body coiling like a spring. He scanned the shadows behind Noah, searching for backup, but when he saw only a lone Asian man standing unarmed, the tension in his shoulders bled into a cruel, arrogant smirk.

The Hedgehog's initial shock curdled into a foul, murderous rage. His blood was still singing with the adrenaline of the kill, and seeing a witness—a calm, seemingly defenseless one at that—stoked his fury to a boiling point. His eyes grew bloodshot, the pupils dilating until they were twin pits of obsidian.

When the distance between them closed to a mere five meters, the Hedgehog felt a surge of predatory triumph. He knew his range. From this distance, he could lunge, and his quills would find their mark before the stranger could even blink.

Without a word of warning, he kicked off the ground, his boots kicking up a spray of grit. He surged forward like a living projectile, arms outstretched to deliver a lethal, spiked shove directly into Noah's chest.

Noah didn't flinch. He didn't even shift his stance. He merely looked up, his expression one of bored detachment. Just as the deadly spikes were inches from his throat, Noah's hand moved in a blur of motion too fast for the human eye to track. He reached out and caught the Hedgehog's attacking wrist in a vice-like grip.

Crunch.

The sound of shattering bone and splintering keratin rang out, sharp and discordant in the narrow space.

The Hedgehog froze, his mouth falling open in a mask of pure, unadulterated shock. He stared down at his wrist. This stranger had stopped his momentum as if he were a child. But it wasn't just the strength that terrified him; it was the impossibility of what he saw.

Noah's palm was unscathed. The quills that should have skewered his hand like soft fruit had simply snapped. A strange, metallic crackling had filled the air for a fraction of a second, and now the broken remnants of the Hedgehog's «unbreakable» spikes were falling to the pavement like discarded toothpicks.

«You... what the hell are you?!» the man wheezed, his voice cracking. He pulled back with all his might, his face turning purple with the effort, but Noah's hand was an iron shackle. He couldn't move his arm a single millimeter.

«Heh,» Noah chuckled softly, his eyes finally focusing on the trembling man.

In truth, Noah was barely paying attention to his victim. He was staring at the translucent blue interface of his system, checking for updates. As he suspected, a new notification was pulsing with a soft, rhythmic glow:

[B-Level Quest: Mutant?]

[Description: While patrolling your territory, you have discovered a feral mutant whose body contains traces of the Mind Stone's energy. Capture him and uncover the origin of his sudden evolution.]

Before Noah could finish reading the fine print, the Hedgehog, driven by blind panic, prepared to strike again with his free hand.

«Tell me,» Noah asked calmly, his finger hovering over the virtual 'Accept' button on the floating panel. «When exactly did you start growing these... accessories?»

As he spoke, he tapped the screen. The interface vanished into a cloud of digital sparks.

«Damn you to hell!» the Hedgehog screamed, his voice trembling with a mixture of agony and terror. «Let go of me! Let go or I'll gut you!»

In a desperate frenzy, the man's left arm began to swell, thick, jagged quills erupting through his sleeve in a sickening display of biological horror. With a guttural roar, he swung the mass of spikes toward Noah's head.
