Kyle's eyes fluttered open to darkness.
Not complete darkness—the kind that came from blackout curtains and a door left slightly ajar. The room was bathed in the soft glow of a bedside lamp he didn't remember turning on. Someone must have come in while he slept.
"Someone took care of me."
He sat up slowly, his body protesting the movement. His muscles ached, but it was a good ache—the kind that came from deep, uninterrupted rest. The sleep had hit all the right spots. His mind felt clear. His limbs felt heavy but functional.
"How long was I out?"
Kyle reached for his phone on the nightstand. The screen glowed to life, illuminating his face in the darkness.
[11:47 PM.]
"Well into the night. Past eleven but not yet midnight."
He had slept through the entire afternoon and evening. The day had slipped away while he was unconscious, and now he was wide awake with nowhere to go and nothing to do. He changed into new clothes, a short and singlet.
