The night air was thick with tension as Sans and Kaylar approached the secure facility on the outskirts of the city. The towering walls loomed high above them, adorned with security cameras and flickering lights that cast eerie shadows across the ground. The faint hum of machinery echoed from within, a reminder of the advanced technology housed inside.
Sans adjusted his hoodie, a habit he'd picked up from countless adventures, and scanned the perimeter. "Looks like they didn't skimp on security for this place," he muttered, a grin creeping onto his face. "But that just makes it more fun, right?"
Kaylar smirked, eyes narrowed in concentration. "Fun is one way to put it. We need to be careful. The Federation won't take kindly to intruders, especially not with something as dangerous as that weapon."
"Right, right. Let's keep it stealthy," Sans replied, his tone light despite the gravity of their mission. "I'll handle the tech stuff. You just point me to the nearest terminal."
As they crept closer, the sounds of the bustling facility grew louder. Guards patrolled the area in shifts, their armor glinting under the harsh lights. Sans and Kaylar ducked behind a stack of crates, observing the guards' movements.
"See that control panel over there?" Kaylar whispered, pointing to a small structure tucked away near the entrance. "If you can disable the security systems, we'll have a clear shot at getting inside."
"Got it," Sans replied, his eye glowing with excitement. "Just keep an eye out for me, will ya?"
With a nod of agreement, Kaylar stayed low while Sans slipped through the shadows toward the control panel. His heart raced, but he felt a familiar thrill—the kind that came with facing challenges head-on.
Reaching the panel, Sans pulled out his hacking device and set to work. His fingers danced over the controls as he accessed the facility's security network. The interface flickered to life, lines of code scrolling rapidly across the screen.
[Hacking - Skill Activated]
"Come on, come on…" he muttered, focusing intently. He bypassed firewalls and encrypted protocols, his mind racing as he worked to disable the alarms and cameras.
Suddenly, a warning flashed on his screen: Unauthorized Access Detected.
"Uh-oh," Sans said, glancing over his shoulder. "Looks like they're onto me."
"Just a little longer!" Kaylar urged, his voice barely a whisper. "We need that door open!"
Summoning all his concentration, Sans accelerated his hacking. He could feel the pressure building as he navigated through layers of security. Just as alarms began to blare, he found the main control for the facility's systems.
With a final keystroke, a wave of relief washed over him as the alarms cut out, and the security cameras went dark. "Got it!" Sans exclaimed, a grin spreading across his face. "You're clear to move!"
Kaylar wasted no time, rushing toward the entrance as the guards still processed what had just happened. "Let's go!"
They slipped through the door, entering a dimly lit hallway filled with the hum of machinery. The air was cooler here, and the smell of oil and metal was strong. Sans scanned the area, looking for any signs of the weapon they were after.
"Where do we start?" Kaylar asked, glancing around.
Sans pulled out the data pad Dalia had given him. "According to this, the weapon should be in a secured lab on the second floor. We'll need to find a way up there without drawing too much attention."
Kaylar nodded, his expression serious. "Then let's move."
They made their way deeper into the facility, sticking to the shadows. Sans's drone floated silently behind him, its blue light dimmed to avoid detection. As they passed through the hallways, they encountered locked doors and monitoring equipment, but Sans's skills proved invaluable.
With each terminal he encountered, he swiftly disabled security measures, allowing them to progress further into the bowels of the facility. They eventually reached a staircase leading to the upper levels.
"Here we go," Kaylar whispered, taking the lead. They ascended the stairs, the sound of their footsteps muffled by the thick metal.
As they reached the second floor, they were met with a long corridor lined with doors. The atmosphere felt charged, and Sans could sense the weight of what they were about to uncover.
"Let's check the first door," Kaylar suggested, gesturing to the nearest one.
Sans approached, pressing his ear to the door. He could hear muffled voices inside—guards discussing the shipment. "Sounds like we're in the right place," he said, stepping back. "Let's keep moving."
They carefully made their way down the corridor, checking each door until they found one that stood out—a reinforced door with a digital lock.
"This must be it," Kaylar said, glancing at Sans. "Can you get us in?"
Sans nodded, pulling out his hacking device again. "Just give me a sec."
As he worked on the lock, he could feel the tension in the air. The voices from the other side grew louder, and he knew they were running out of time. The last thing they needed was to be caught before they secured the weapon.
With a final beep, the lock clicked open. "We're in!" Sans said, pushing the door open slowly.
Inside, the lab was filled with high-tech equipment and large containment units. In the center of the room, a massive device hummed ominously—a sleek, metallic weapon surrounded by glowing energy fields.
Sans's eyes widened. "That's it. That's the weapon."
Kaylar stepped forward, surveying the room. "We need to secure it and get out of here before they realize we're inside."
As they moved closer, the lights in the lab flickered, and a loud alarm blared once more.
"Too late!" Kaylar shouted, reaching for his weapon. "We've been spotted!"
Sans spun around, his grin fading. "Let's make this quick!"
With guards rushing into the lab, Sans summoned a barrier of bones to provide cover. Kaylar opened fire, taking down the first wave of guards as they entered.
"Keep them off me!" Sans shouted as he concentrated on disabling the weapon's security protocols. "I need a minute!"
Kaylar nodded, his focus unwavering as he fought off the incoming Federation soldiers. "Just hurry up!"
Sans's fingers flew over the controls, his glowing eye pulsing with energy. The tension in the room was palpable as he worked against the clock.
"Almost there…" he muttered, sweat forming on his brow.
Just as he bypassed the final locks, a blast from a guard's weapon shattered the control panel beside him, sending sparks flying.
"Sans!" Kaylar shouted, dodging behind a stack of crates. "Get that thing online!"
With a final push, Sans activated the weapon, and it hummed to life, the energy fields surrounding it stabilizing.
"Got it!" he yelled, a triumphant grin returning as he turned to Kaylar. "Now what?"
Kaylar glanced at the weapon, then back at the guards closing in. "We need to get it out of here—now!"
As they prepared to make their escape, Sans could feel the thrill of the chaos surrounding them. The fight wasn't over yet, and he was ready for whatever came next.
"Let's do this!" he called out, summoning a barrage of bones to shield them as they charged toward the exit.
