The inside of the ruined tower was much darker than it looked from outside.
John stepped through the broken entrance first, his eyes quickly adjusting to the lack of light. The floor was covered in dust and small pieces of stone, but there were clear signs that someone had been living here.
There was a small table near the wall.
A few wooden chairs.
Several candles.
And on one side of the room, someone had placed a collection of books and old papers in neat stacks.
Lythriel looked around.
"Someone actually lives here."
Serah, who had already walked farther inside, glanced over her shoulder.
"Sometimes."
Darius frowned.
"Sometimes?"
Serah shrugged.
"I don't stay here all the time."
"Then where do you stay?"
"Wherever I need to."
Darius looked at John.
"She answers questions with more questions than actual answers."
"I noticed," John said.
Serah smiled.
"You're free to leave."
Darius opened his mouth.
Lythriel immediately grabbed his arm.
"Don't."
