Chapter 48 - What if Hiatus

I was summoned to the council's emergency meeting. The problem is that the military and werewolves were searching the length and breadth of the cities nearby to make sure I didn't make it there. So the vampires came with a solution. The vampires sent a human courier to deliver me to the meeting. He was waiting at the edge of the forest. He was Hispanic. He dressed like he was either a gangster or rapper. I smiled as an elderly man in his fifties explained the rules. I slipped into a duffel bag as he was told to take it to the next city. He will be well compensated and his family problems will go away. The man's response was disrespectful. He said a few words of profanities. Before taking the bag. He drove off and after a few minutes he stopped the car. I can see he got out and was trying to rethink his life choices. He wasn't happy with the situation but he needed the money. He took several deep breaths and looked up in prayer. He stared at the sky as though he was trying to summon the strength to finish the task. He drove for an hour and he was stopped by the army. I slightly unzipped it and pushed out a sweatshirt. They saw the duffel bag was open and its contents. They asked him to open the trunk and had the sniffer dogs search before they asked him to keep driving. He saw the bag was unzipped so he rezipped it. He drove for another six hours. We were moments away from reaching our destination. Which had several road blocks. He was swearing profusely. After the fifth he asked them if there was a biohazard incident. They assured him that there was no biohazard incident. They are trying to catch a predator. He thanked them and drove off. The vampires were waiting for him. They let him in and he was given an envelope full of cash and they took the duffel bag. Once they were sure he was long gone they unzipped it and carried me in.

I walked into an elevator and we went up several floors. The governor, a few werewolves and a few personnel from the military were talking to the vampires when we walked in. They were shocked to see me. They wanted to know how I snuck in. I smiled, "None of your business" the werewolf growled and changed. I wolf whistled and he changed back. He stared, "Alpha!" I walked towards the throne and bowed with respect. I asked them if my services were required. The vampires ushered me to my seat. I sat on the left to the vampire. The werewolf watched me. The soldier demanded the vampires lend their men and women to the depleting troop. The civilians were distancing themselves since they believe the military were trying to keep everyone trapped. They were hoping everyone to put aside their differences for the greater good. The King at the time wasn't Soren. His name is Alaric. He made it clear that they will help the locals fight the undead but that won't extend to the army since they had been dishonest and dishonorable. They had gone above and beyond. All of the werewolves eyed me with interest. I smiled as they stared. I waved and spoke the shorthand the werewolves use. They asked me where I learned it. I smiled, "Cain taught me when I saved him. It was when the army sold him as a slave." He muttered, "You are making it up." I simply changed my eyes and showed him the memories. He stared at me with amazement.

The Colonel made it clear that we will regret it. The werewolves and soldiers walked out and I listened to the governor's idea to lure these things to the empty slums and blow them to bits. I asked if I could sweep the streets for stragglers. The King refused my request. He wanted me to stay by his side since I am the one they openly avoid. I was allowed to clean myself and sit by his side. I was annoyed that I was allowed to watch the very limited scenery from the window. I used echolocation to see everything. The vampire covens joined the werewolves clans to assist locals to fight zombies. They didn't assist the soldiers. This was openly called out and they ignored them as a rule. The king was sitting in his seat and he watched as his subordinates ran all over to find out what was happening.

I kept my mouth shut as they gave him partial info. They tried to make it look like the werewolves were sleeping on the job and the vampires were doing all the heavy lifting. He played with his champagne glass filled with blood. He was bored but he seemed genuinely happy with the report. Soren came out and mentioned the rule that dictates the king fighting. He was told he will do that once it is his turn to rule. Until then he should keep his mouth shut. He is the crown prince so he is ordered to stay here in the throne room. Soren wanted to protest but kept his silence as he stood on the other side. I decided that I don't want the disguise anymore. So I went back to my childish looks. Soren stared with amusement. The king gave me one look and went back to listening to the progress outside.

I don't know what took over him but he suddenly ordered the vampires to form a perimeter around this property. The clock on the wall was counting down to something. It took me several minutes to realise the sun was rising and they will be baked if they can't come indoors on time. So I politely excused myself to welcome my family. The king waved me off. I stepped out of the front door and summoned an army of bats to cover the sky. They each thanked me as they went inside. Once everyone was inside the door was bolted shut and the governor sent his thanks. He expected them to come out once the sunsets. The king wasn't interested in loosing numbers so he told him that he can't spare his coven tonight. The other covens were still recovering from the ill treatment from the soldiers and scientists. He promised to punish them in exchange for service rendered. The king promised to think about it. Soren summoned the council and they concurred that the other king was a fool so they terminated his term in rule. He protested but stepped down since the council had the authority to do so.

Soren was placed as leader and I asked if I could step out alone. The yelling almost blew out the roof. Soren asked if I had a specific talent that could work. I told him that I developed a new gift that has deterred these menaces. So once the sunsets I will unleash my gift and put an end to these things forever. He and the others don't need to sacrifice their numbers to kill these things. They were all pleased to hear. They knew I wasn't happy they were outside in harm's way. They gave me an appreciative smile as they all waited till the sun was down. The governor was told that only one was coming out and this one will handle all of the zombies. He was told to mind his own business. The doors opened and I walked out and screamed as loud as possible. They fell backwards and began to spasm. They spat out black blood before going still. I went back inside and the door shut behind me. Soren gave me a thumbs up as the others cheered loudly. The governor called asking for reinforcement and he was told to hold the line. I zipped out and screamed at the zombies and they all died. Then I came back to the mansion.

The governor thanked Soren for his quick thinking. They both talked logistics and I went upstairs to read a book. The fighter class were practicing marital arts and practicing their aim. They used guns but a few even used bow and arrow. They fought each other with swords and with their bare hands. I watched them fight and they stopped to show their respects. I bowed and requested a few lessons since I am by myself. I am not allowed to interfere with politics. I can be useful as a fighter. They happily began lessons. I spent most of my time on the mat than on my feet but it was worth it. They were harsh and unapologetic. The lessons continued till Soren came to tell me I had to go with soldiers. I put my foot down. I don't trust them unless I have a few vampires for company I am not going anywhere with them. Soren smiled as he walked away. He had told the governor that as crown princess I had the right to refuse. And I will refuse since it was the army. I had a history with them. I don't trust them even as far as I can throw them. The governor tried to plead the case but Soren made it clear I am not going anywhere with the army. They went back to negotiating.
