"This might work."
The Grave Cartographer that had returned from one of the eastern passages apparently interpreted my approval as permission to approach, because the undead crossed the cavern toward me while a cluster of crystal tablets and thin sheets of rune-covered bone rotated around its body. A three-dimensional projection unfolded above its hands as it moved, recreating the enormous central cavern before branching outward through dozens of partially explored passages. Underground water glowed blue, geothermal regions burned orange, mineral deposits shone silver, and the Class 5 Ley Line twisted beneath the mountain in enormous intertwined currents of gold and white. Most of the outer mountain was still dark, but considering my hundred SS-Ranked specialists had only been working for a few hours, the amount they had already mapped was fucking impressive.
"Preliminary survey available, my Queen."
I turned away from the lake and studied the projection. "How preliminary? Are we at 'the ceiling probably won't fall on my head' or 'you've checked enough of the mountain that placing a permanent fortress isn't going to make me feel like an idiot tomorrow'?"
"The central cavern and immediate supporting geological formations have been evaluated to sufficient confidence for temporary occupation and controlled construction. Thirty-seven major connected passages have been identified. Eleven expand into secondary cavern networks of significant size. Full mapping of the mountain, glacier, submerged passages, magical ecology, mineral deposits, and external access routes remains incomplete."
"Good. Keep going, and if you find anything living down there that's intelligent enough to own property, report before anybody starts digging through its bedroom."
The Cartographer bowed.
"Dragons included," I added, although that was more a matter of courtesy than personal safety. At this point an ordinary dragon breathing fire on me would probably feel like standing near a pleasant fireplace. Hell, considering what my Primordial body and Hellfire affinity had become, I suspected I'd have to bathe in my own Hellfire before temperature alone became uncomfortable. "If you find a dragon, don't attack it unless it attacks first. I don't particularly care if it breathes fire, but I would rather not build my house on top of somebody else's lair and then act surprised when they get pissed."
"As you command."
The Cartographer returned to work, leaving one copy of the expanding map hovering near the lake for my Parallel Minds to monitor. The hundred undead were doing exactly what I summoned them to do without requiring me to stand over them like the world's most overqualified construction supervisor, which meant I had finally run out of respectable excuses for avoiding the truly horrifying task waiting inside my Inventory: organization.
I lowered myself onto a relatively flat section of stone beside the lake and immediately spent the next thirty seconds fighting with my own fucking wings. More than twenty feet of beautiful black feathers looked fantastic when I was flying, intimidating people, or standing dramatically in a magical wasteland. They were substantially less convenient when I wanted to sit down without bending a joint underneath myself or crushing half a wing beneath my ass.
"Furniture designed for wings," I muttered.
Several Parallel Minds added it to the growing infrastructure list.
I shifted again, gave up on being comfortable, and opened the Inventory.
The first category I wanted to deal with contained hundreds of artifacts I had stolen from Vask without ever stopping long enough to seriously consider what I was going to do with them.
Infrastructure Cores:
1 SS-Ranked Damaged Kingdom Ward Core.
14 S-Ranked Runic City Cores.
86 A-Ranked Town Cores.
419 B-Ranked Village and Estate Cores.
6 S-Ranked Monster Breeding and Agricultural Cores.
42 A-Ranked Monster Ranch Cores.
"System, show me exactly what happens when I deploy a B-Ranked Village Core."
The answer came with a simple projection.
B-Ranked Village Core.
Deployment requires sufficient compatible construction materials.
When activated, the Core uses the supplied materials to construct one modest central building appropriate to the selected purpose of the settlement.
A two-story stone hall appeared in miniature. It looked sturdy without being extravagant, with several rooms, a small tower, and a larger central chamber containing a glowing crystal mounted beneath a magical map.
The Infrastructure Core becomes permanently housed inside the central structure and creates a magical map and control interface covering its supported territory.
Additional settlement buildings are not automatically created.
The projection changed as several separately constructed houses appeared around the central hall. One after another, glowing runic lines extended from the hall to the buildings.
Additional buildings may be manually constructed and connected to the Core's magical grid. Once linked, compatible shared systems may be managed through the central interface.
Supported systems may include wards, magical power distribution, communication, identification, lighting, heating, cooling, water supply, waste handling, alarms, environmental regulation, and other installed infrastructure.
I stared at the little glowing village for a few seconds before nodding.
"Sure, that totally makes sense."
The Core wasn't a magical city-in-a-box. It was the beginning of a grid. Give it materials, choose where to put it, and it constructed one central building containing the Core and the magical interface. Everything else still had to be built, but once a house, workshop, warehouse, hospital, laboratory, farm, or whatever other structure existed, I could connect it to that central grid instead of giving every building an entirely independent collection of wards and utilities.
"Town."
The projection became a larger hall with multiple floors and a broader map room.
A-Ranked Town Core.
Functions according to the same fundamental principle as a B-Ranked Village Core but creates a larger central structure and supports greater territory, more linked buildings, stronger shared systems, and greater network complexity.
"City."
The building became a substantial administrative complex, closer to a keep crossed with a government hall than a house.
S-Ranked Runic City Core.
Creates one high-grade central administrative structure containing the City Core and its primary interface.
May coordinate large numbers of connected structures and incorporate compatible subordinate Infrastructure Cores into a unified network.
"That's useful as fuck."
A City Core could eventually sit at the center of everything I built here. Town Cores could coordinate industrial districts, agricultural zones, harbor facilities, or satellite settlements, while Village Cores could run small research outposts or mines. Once I followed that thought far enough, there was no fucking reason any of those Cores needed to stay on Earth. A Village Core could establish the heart of a mining base on an asteroid, a Town Core might coordinate a research colony on some habitable moon, and a City Core could eventually anchor an entire off-world settlement if I found a planet worth colonizing.
That also forced me to appreciate something I had been too focused on Lindsey to really enjoy yet: her planet existed, which proved Earth wasn't the only inhabited world in the universe.
There was at least one other planet somewhere among the stars with people, monsters, kingdoms, magic, and enough civilization for an Empire Building System to dump Vera into the middle of it and expect her to establish a territory. There was absolutely no guarantee it was the only one. If finding Lindsey required years of moving between star systems, then I might encounter another inhabited world long before I reached hers, and the possibility of alien civilizations, completely foreign magical traditions, unknown species, strange technology, impossible ecosystems, and cultures that had developed without humanity anywhere nearby sounded fucking amazing.
Several Parallel Minds reacted immediately. One created FIRST CONTACT PROCEDURES, another started a folder for ALIEN LANGUAGE RESEARCH, and a particularly optimistic one added AVOID ACCIDENTALLY STARTING INTERSTELLAR WAR. A fourth added HOT ALIEN WOMEN?, which earned several seconds of consideration before I said, "Obviously, but Lindsey first." The note stayed exactly where it was, and I made no effort to delete it.
I was a Primordial Devil Queen of Lust, not a fucking nun. In fact, the longer I existed in this body, the clearer it became that Queen of Lust wasn't merely an aesthetic title slapped onto my race because I had Succubus blood. Lust and sexual fulfillment were actual components of my infernal nature. My body could go for several days without caring, but somewhere around the one-week mark the need became increasingly intrusive until ignoring it would start interfering with my magical and emotional equilibrium.
A small Status notice appeared when I deliberately focused on the sensation.
Primordial Lust Requirement.
As a Primordial Devil Queen of Lust, regular sexual fulfillment is a component of optimal racial and infernal equilibrium.
Recommended maximum interval between satisfactory sexual activity: 7 days.
"Yeah, figured."
I still had plenty of time before that became urgent, and when it did I could summon a Succubus or some other thing to fuck into oblivion.
Still, if I eventually met an attractive alien woman who was interested? That sounded like a culturally enriching first-contact experience. I returned to the Cores as my Parallel Minds started designing diplomatic pickup lines.
"Show me the Agricultural Cores."
S-Ranked Monster Breeding and Agricultural Core.
Deployment requires sufficient compatible construction materials.
Creates one central farmhouse, agricultural hall, or management structure and a small initial cultivated area appropriate to the selected configuration.
Additional fields, greenhouses, orchards, barns, storage structures, irrigation systems, paddocks, and other agricultural facilities may be built separately and linked to the Core's magical grid.
"And Ranch Cores work the same way but focus on animals?"
Notice: Correct.
"Do they create animals?"
Notice: No. Infrastructure Cores build and coordinate infrastructure; Barracks are the living-production artifact category.
I looked at the hundreds of Cores again.
"Do these work here?"
Notice: Yes. Vaskian Infrastructure Cores are independent magical artifacts and do not require an active Empire Building System after manufacture.
"Another planet?"
Notice: Yes, assuming compatible magical power and deployment conditions.
"Then we're keeping a reserve."
Five percent became the minimum almost immediately, but I had enough that there was no reason to be stingy with myself. Of the 419 B-Ranked Village and Estate Cores, I kept fifty. Ten of the 86 A-Ranked Town Cores stayed with me, along with three of the fourteen S-Ranked City Cores, two of the six S-Ranked Agricultural Cores, and ten of the 42 A-Ranked Monster Ranch Cores. The damaged SS-Ranked Kingdom Ward Core never entered the discussion because there was no universe where I was voluntarily giving away a damaged national defensive artifact when I had Master Artificer, Master Runesmith, several hundred thousand books, and enough time to eventually figure out how to fix the fucking thing.
Strategic and Colonial Core Reserve:
1 SS-Ranked Damaged Kingdom Ward Core.
3 S-Ranked Runic City Cores.
10 A-Ranked Town Cores.
50 B-Ranked Village and Estate Cores.
2 S-Ranked Monster Breeding and Agricultural Cores.
10 A-Ranked Monster Ranch Cores.
Available for Dominion Transfer:
11 S-Ranked Runic City Cores.
76 A-Ranked Town Cores.
369 B-Ranked Village and Estate Cores.
4 S-Ranked Monster Breeding and Agricultural Cores.
32 A-Ranked Monster Ranch Cores.
One of my Parallel Minds immediately presented the next useful question.
"System, are Cores manufactured, or does everybody over there just pray their System gives them one?"
Notice: Both sources exist.
I sat up slightly.
"People can make them?"
Notice: Yes. Multiple civilizations and specialist organizations within the Empire Building world manufacture standardized lower- and middle-Ranked Infrastructure Cores. Difficulty, cost, rarity, required knowledge, and manufacturing complexity increase significantly with Rank and specialization.
That went directly into its own research project.
CORE RESEARCH AND REPRODUCTION
I wasn't about to randomly tear apart one of the SS-Ranked artifacts like a toddler dismantling a clock, but once I had a dedicated researcher, I wanted every part of a B-Ranked Village Core studied. Runes, materials, interface magic, construction enchantments, network logic, power handling, territorial mapping, everything. If somebody else had figured out how to manufacture these things, then eventually so would we.
I opened the Infernal Contract.
"Zaric."
Mistress.
"Do you know how people make settlement Cores?"
There was a brief pause.
Somewhat. Lower-Ranked Cores are produced by specialist artificers generally called Corewrights. Several neighboring kingdoms possess Corewright guilds or state workshops. High-Ranked examples are significantly more restricted.
"Can we hire one?"
Possibly. Your destruction of Vask has made certain neighboring rulers cautious about associating with us.
"Understandable. Apparently erasing a kingdom makes people weird."
Yes, it has that effect.
"Start looking anyway. Hire somebody if they'll come willingly, buy manuals, buy damaged Cores, buy apprenticeship records, trade for construction methods, bribe officials, and if somebody decides basic infrastructure engineering is a sacred state secret, steal copies of the books before you start kidnapping people."
I appreciate that kidnapping is no longer first on the list.
"I'm becoming a better person."
Remarkable progress.
"Fuck you."
As you command, Mistress.
I smiled before remembering another question I should have asked sooner.
"How's Vera's System doing?"
Zaric took longer to answer that one.
I'd gotten to leave. Vera was still stuck with an Empire Building System that apparently expected the bimbo I created to keep building an empire, which meant Zaric was probably doing ninety-nine percent of the actual work.
Calling that estimate generous to Vera wasn't particularly unfair. Puppet of Lust had reduced her so thoroughly that she was basically a walking sex toy that somehow retained enough cognition to speak, obey instructions, interact with her System, and complete straightforward tasks when somebody explained exactly what she needed to do. She wasn't independently managing supply routes, organizing city defenses, negotiating treaties, or solving economic policy unless the goal was to see how quickly an empire could collapse under the leadership of a woman who occasionally looked confused by doors.
That was why Zaric was Regent.
Her System remains active, he replied. It continues to recognize her as the territory's Lord and continues issuing objectives, milestones, construction options, rewards, territorial events, and progression opportunities.
"What fresh bullshit has it dumped into your lap?"
The immediate objectives following your departure concerned food security, replacement of lost infrastructure, maintenance of the three surrounding towns, defensive readiness, trade stability, and preventing significant population decline. The emergency resources you returned completed several objectives automatically.
"So I stripped half the city, realized I fucked up, returned enough supplies to bury you alive, and accidentally completed reconstruction quests."
That is substantially accurate.
"How much is Vera contributing?"
She receives the System prompts. I instruct her which options to select when choices are required. She can place authorized System structures when given exact locations, acknowledge rewards, and complete simple personally assigned objectives. Everything requiring judgment is handled by me, or the administrative staff.
"So you're running an empire through a bimbo-shaped user interface."
Zaric remained silent just long enough to make me grin.
An offensive description.
"Wrong?"
No.
"Thought so."
I ordered him to send me copies of Vera's important System notices going forward. Her Empire Building System was still an active source of information about that world, and there was no reason to ignore it just because its official owner had the strategic planning ability of an enchanted sex doll.
Then my thoughts shifted toward the person I actually cared about.
"How's Lindsey?"
The change in my voice happened before I could stop it.
Healthy. She ate less than an hour ago and is currently asleep. The Flesh Mimic remains with her. Both Hellhound Mistresses remain on guard. No illness or abnormal magical development has been detected.
"Good."
I closed my eyes for several seconds and let the relief settle instead of trying to shove it into some organized corner of my Mind Palace. Lindsey was six months old, safe, alive, and still so far away that the System couldn't even tell me whether we were in the same galaxy. The first three facts kept me functional; the last one was becoming increasingly fucking unacceptable.
"I need an actual way to find you."
Mistress?
"Not you specifically. The planet."
I looked at my materials and started designing the solution before Zaric could answer.
The basic artifact wasn't difficult. I was already a Master Artificer and Master Runesmith, which meant building an advanced magical device out of runes, enchanted metals, resonance structures, and Mana Gems was comfortably inside the category of things I could do without reinventing my entire understanding of magic. The hard part wasn't fabrication. It was deciding what information the artifact actually needed to provide.
I already had a permanent magical Contract with Zaric, Devil Queen's Dominion linking me to Lindsey, and the blood and familial resonance between us. What I lacked was a reliable direction, so I built a paired beacon.
Soul Silver formed the primary resonance ring, reinforced with Orichalcum and Royal Star Gold. An S-Ranked Royal Mana Gem provided independent power, although I also designed external connections so Zaric could eventually wire the thing into Vera's magical grid. Layers of microscopic runes encoded my Dominion signature, Lindsey's familial resonance, Zaric's Contract signature, identity validation, self-repair, tamper resistance, signal amplification, and a deliberately repetitive magical pulse unlike any natural background pattern.
The second half of the artifact was a palm-sized locator crystal keyed only to the first.
From a runic perspective, it was almost relaxing. Master Runesmith let me compress systems that would have required entire walls of inscriptions when I first arrived in this world into layers of interlocking symbols small enough to fit beneath my fingernail, while Master Artificer made finding structural conflicts and unstable magical pathways so intuitive that several mistakes died in my head before they ever reached the metal.
Less than an hour later, the System appraised the result.
SS-Ranked Paired Astral Homing Beacon.
Creator: Valentine Silver.
Primary Beacon: 1.
Paired Locator: 1.
The Primary Beacon emits a continuous sympathetic magical signature keyed to Valentine Silver's Dominion authority, the Infernal Contract binding Zaric to Valentine Silver, selected familial resonance associated with Lindsey Silver, and the paired Locator.
The paired Locator may determine the magical bearing of the active Primary Beacon across extreme astronomical distances, subject to sufficient metaphysical continuity and interference.
Absolute distance is not provided.
Primary Beacon Power Source: 1 S-Ranked Royal Mana Gem.
Estimated independent operational duration: 1,386 years.
Compatible external power may extend operational duration indefinitely.
"Good enough to start."
I held the Locator in one hand and waited, only for absolutely nothing to happen because the other half of the paired artifact was still sitting beside me. "Right. Fucking genius." One Parallel Mind laughed at me until I told it to shut up, then I opened the Fulfillment Circle.
"Zaric, incoming artifact."
Received.
"Take that to the central administrative hall. Put it somewhere physically protected, connect it to the local magical grid if you can, and activate it. Do not bury it under every anti-detection ward you own because the entire purpose is for me to find the fucking thing."
Understood. Give me several minutes.
I waited instead of pretending the Locator could somehow find an inactive beacon that hadn't even been installed yet.
A few minutes later Zaric returned through the Contract.
The device is installed in the upper ward chamber of the administrative hall and has been connected to the hall's primary magical supply. Activating now.
The crystal in my hand moved instantly, rotating hard enough that I nearly dropped it before settling at a steep angle through the cavern floor. The direction wasn't north, south, east, or west because Earth had inconveniently rotated until Lindsey's planet lay below my local horizon and, from where I stood, somewhere through the planet. "Holy shit." I moved the crystal, turned completely around, and watched the pointer correct itself every single time.
Several Parallel Minds started recording orientation, exact local time, geographic position, celestial reference information, and the Earth's rotation so we could eventually convert repeated measurements into something astronomically useful.
"Zaric, it's working."
Good.
"Don't let anyone break that beacon."
I had not intended to use it as a doorstop.
"Smartass."
I ended the call smiling.
For the first time, Lindsey's location wasn't simply somewhere. I had a direction. That didn't solve distance or tell me which star, galaxy, or planet I needed to reach, but once I built a serious magical observatory I could start searching along an actual line instead of checking the entire universe like the world's most desperate idiot. Unfortunately, the beacon also forced me to acknowledge the part I'd been trying not to think about: this could take years.
Even with obscene magical resources, I still needed to understand orbital mechanics, build experimental spacecraft, develop propulsion, test vacuum survival, create navigation systems, identify Lindsey's star, and then physically cross whatever distance existed between us. She might be walking before I reached the Moon, talking before I left Earth's solar system, or old enough to understand exactly what it meant that her mother wasn't there before I ever arrived. I couldn't fix the distance today, but I could at least make sure she knew me while I fought my way across it.
Hogwarts had magical portraits, and Vask had possessed several traditions of responsive enchanted artwork. Between the Royal Library, the thirteen Regional Archive Crystals, and my own magical knowledge, I had more than enough references to develop something similar. What I did not have was the ability to paint anything better than a deformed potato.
"Well. Guess I'm fixing that."
Painting became my next project.
With 4,680 Intelligence, Genius Mind, Speed Reading, perfect memory, thirty-nine Parallel Minds, and access to hundreds of books on pigments, anatomy, perspective, magical portraiture, noble art, enchanted paints, and responsive artwork, learning was less about struggling to understand technique and more about forcing my hands to catch up with what my brain already knew.
The first several attempts were ugly enough that I destroyed them out of self-respect. After that, improvement accelerated rapidly. I painted hands until the fingers stopped looking like sausages, faces until eyes stopped drifting into different dimensions, fabric until folds actually resembled cloth, crystal light reflected across the lake, one of my Grave Cartographers standing motionless while several Parallel Minds argued over how much blue fire should be visible through its skull, and eventually complete figures that looked like actual people rather than victims of a poorly supervised Body Sculptor.
Painting Life Skill acquired.
Painting: Beginner.
Hours of concentrated practice pushed Beginner into Intermediate and then Advanced. Master took longer because the System apparently expected more than technical competence before handing out the designation, so I stopped treating the work like an exercise and painted Lindsey. I remembered her perfectly: pale skin, soft blonde hair, faint golden eyes, tiny hands, the shape of her face when she slept, and the way the Flesh Mimic held her against its chest while the Hellhound Mistresses guarded the nursery. I also remembered standing beside that same nursery before the merger and intellectually understanding that she was my daughter while emotionally feeling so little that the memory now made something twist painfully inside me. I kept painting until the canvas matched what lived inside my head, corrected details nobody else would ever notice, and then painted her a second time because the first one was technically perfect and still didn't feel good enough.
Notice: Painting has reached Master Rank.
"About fucking time."
I kept both Lindsey portraits for myself and started a third canvas for her. This time I painted myself as I looked now, with long silver-white hair, snow-white skin, curved black horns, cyan-blue eyes containing their faint pink glow, the muscular body my evolution had given me, and the titanic fucking breasts apparently required for the pinnacle of Devil Queen biology. My wings spread loosely behind the chair I painted myself sitting in, while the expression on my face was deliberately warm instead of the vaguely predatory look I seemed to wear whenever I stopped paying attention. Painting the image was the slow part; enchanting it was easier.
I refused to use Soul Weaver to create an actual consciousness. I already knew I could construct new souls, which was precisely why I was being careful. Lindsey needed a mother-shaped presence, not an independently sapient copy of me trapped inside a canvas and forced to spend eternity pretending it wasn't a person.
The portrait received copied information rather than pieces of my soul. Selected memories were translated into enchanted records. Behavioral enchantments modeled the way I spoke, joked, swore, answered questions, and responded emotionally. Adaptive conversation magic allowed the portrait to remember its interactions with Lindsey and adjust future responses without developing independent desires or self-awareness. Voice enchantments reproduced my actual speech rather than some overly formal magical approximation, because if Lindsey grew up believing her mother talked like Rowena Ravenclaw and then eventually met me, the shock might cause permanent psychological damage.
I also made damn sure the portrait understood the important things: I hadn't intentionally abandoned Lindsey, I had made a mistake, I loved her, I was alive, I was trying to find her, and I would keep trying for as long as it took. Once those memories and behavioral limits were in place, I made the System verify the finished enchantment repeatedly.
Sapient consciousness detected: No.
Independent soul detected: No.
Capacity for suffering: No.
Independent desires: No.
Adaptive conversational memory: Yes.
Behavioral model: Valentine Silver.
Risk of spontaneous sapience under ordinary operation: Negligible.
"Good."
I activated the portrait.
The painted version of me blinked, looked around the room painted behind her, and then focused on me.
"Well," she said, glancing down at herself, "this is fucking weird."
I laughed.
"Hearing myself from outside my own skull is worse than expected."
"You made me sound like you. What the fuck did you think would happen?"
"Maybe a little gratitude?"
"For being painted?"
"Yeah."
"Go fuck yourself. Knowing you, you'll probably figure out how to make that work with a painting eventually."
I tested the portrait for almost an hour, deliberately asking it questions Lindsey might eventually ask. It knew it was a magical portrait rather than the real Valentine and would explain that distinction when Lindsey became old enough to understand it. It could tell stories about my life, answer questions using the information I had given it, remember Lindsey's preferences, and adapt the tone of its responses as she grew.
Then I asked the questions that mattered.
"If Lindsey asks why I'm not there?"
Portrait Me's expression softened. "Because you fucked up and ended up unimaginably far away, but you're trying to come back."
"If she's little, maybe don't lead with 'your mother fucked up.'"
"I can adjust vocabulary by developmental stage."
"Good. If she thinks I left because I didn't want her?"
"I tell her that's wrong."
"If she asks whether I love her?"
The painted version of me looked directly into my eyes.
"I tell her that her mother loves her enough to cross the fucking universe to get home."
My throat tightened.
"Perfect."
I sent the portrait through the Fulfillment Circle.
"Zaric."
Mistress.
"Another delivery."
It appears to be you.
"It's a portrait."
A few seconds passed.
It just told me my glasses make me look like a disappointed librarian.
"Accurate."
It has also informed me that I am the responsible parent.
I grinned. "Very accurate."
His response was quieter when it came.
This is for Lindsey.
"Yeah. Put it in her nursery for now. When she's older, let her decide where she wants it. I know it isn't actually me, but if getting there takes years, I'm not letting my daughter grow up with nothing but stories about some asshole she doesn't remember."
She will know you.
"Make sure she knows I'm coming."
I will.
It helped, but not enough. Nothing would be enough until I physically reached her, yet it was still something I could give Lindsey now. After that, I spent hours moving half a fucking kingdom back through the Fulfillment Circle.
The Contract ignored astronomical distance beautifully; warehouse management did not.
Cores went first because they were easy to categorize. Then food, medicine, seed stock, tools, clothing, low- and middle-Ranked Mana Gems, construction supplies, military equipment I didn't intend to study, spare enchanted gear, preserved biological resources, currency, and more raw material than several medieval nations could have transported in a lifetime.
I kept meaningful reserves of everything, never less than five percent, and considerably more whenever something looked useful for future colonies or research. Rare metals stayed mostly with me. Royal Star Gold, Orichalcum, Soul Silver, and Mythril were far harder to replace than ordinary stone.
Zaric got most of the currency as well. I kept five percent of each denomination for archival, trade, and emergency use, then sent the rest back.
Mistress.
"What?"
Stop transferring Stone to Receiving Zone Seven.
I glanced at the transfer queue. "Why?"
Because Receiving Zone Seven is currently beneath approximately forty-two thousand tons of it.
I stared for several seconds before laughing.
"I made a hill."
You buried a magical logistics Circle.
"Same basic concept."
It is not.
"You're being picky."
Zaric established bulk receiving fields outside the city after that and made me promise not to send anything weighing more than a thousand tons without warning him first.
Somewhere during the sixth hour of transfers, the larger implication finally clicked. I froze with another shipment halfway selected. The Fulfillment Circle didn't care that I was on Earth. It cared that the Contract existed. Which meant if I was standing on Mars, floating inside an asteroid belt, orbiting an alien star, or halfway across the galaxy, I should still be able to send nonliving materials through the same link.
"Zaric."
What did you realize?
I blinked. "How did you know I realized something?"
Experience.
"Fair. I can use you as a factory."
The silence lasted long enough to become judgmental.
You may wish to rephrase that.
"The Dominion. Not you personally."
Better. Marginally.
"If I'm traveling through space and find an asteroid with ten million tons of useful ore, I can mine the thing and send the material to you. Your people refine it, manufacture whatever I need from the designs I send, and ship the finished product back through the Contract."
Zaric understood immediately.
Assuming we possess the necessary industrial capacity.
"Which means every forge, refinery, alchemy lab, mine, artificer workshop, factory, and research institution you build becomes infrastructure I can access from anywhere."
Potentially.
"Fuck."
My Parallel Minds were already planning around it.
The spacecraft still needed serious onboard manufacturing because depending completely on another planet would be suicidal if the Contract was ever blocked, but there was no reason to cram an entire planetary steel industry into one ship. I could carry emergency fabrication, precision workshops, laboratories, spare parts, and enough industrial capability to keep myself alive while Zaric's world handled bulk manufacturing. A damaged engine could go home for rebuilding, alien alloys could be shipped back as samples for analysis, forty thousand identical hull fasteners could be manufactured from a design I transmitted, and if I found a mountain made of some magical crystal nobody had ever seen before, I could mine enough of it to ruin a geologist's week and dump the material straight into the Dominion's industrial chain.
"You're my industrial support base."
We remain a sovereign civilization containing your daughter, not a warehouse.
"Planet-sized logistics hub."
No.
"Remote factory world."
Absolutely not.
"Fine. Dominion."
Thank you.
"But build factories."
Zaric sighed.
We are currently rebuilding food infrastructure.
"Factories after food."
Roads require repair.
"Factories after roads."
Warehouses—
"Zaric, I am not asking you to stop feeding people because I want spaceship parts tomorrow. I'm saying long term. This project will take years."
That silenced both of us.
Eventually Zaric answered.
Then we will use those years.
"Yeah."
By the time I finally paused the transfer queue, I had been sitting beside the lake long enough for my wings to become a recurring source of hatred.
I shifted again.
A feather caught beneath my hip.
"Fuck this."
I opened my Mind Palace and began designing a summoning array.
I could have used Infernal Command's default templates, but manually designed summoning had been one of my specialties for months. The System's default approach was wasteful and boring, while my own arrays let me specify exactly what I wanted. Five runic languages overlapped across the cavern floor as black symbols carved themselves into the stone, silvery-gold circles formed in the air, and smaller linking structures tied every requirement into the primary multidimensional array.
I wasn't summoning a researcher or a combatant. I wanted furniture—specifically living furniture with breasts large enough to use as a bed—so I encoded the requirements directly into the linked circles: an adult female body from a giant species, extremely oversized soft mammary structure, livestock-level intelligence without self-awareness, extreme docility, physical durability, warm body temperature, comfort-oriented domestication traits, simple bonded command comprehension, infernal or magical compatibility, and no aggressive instincts.
The System analyzed the growing array.
Notice: Custom multidimensional summoning structure detected.
Master Runesmith optimization recognized.
Selection parameters substantially restrict eligible targets.
"That's the fucking point."
One Parallel Mind checked every requirement while another monitored the five runic languages for interference. The final linking rune expanded across the others and guaranteed that the summoning wouldn't decide six out of nine conditions were close enough.
I raised one hand and spoke the compressed activation word I had created for complicated runic structures. "ⵞⴱↈ." The sound vibrated through the cavern with enough force to disturb the lake as every rune expanded at once and space bent around the array. For several seconds, the portal network flickered through multiple strange environments before locking onto somewhere warm and red-lit where enormous humanoid shapes moved through broad pastures, then the entire structure collapsed inward and completed the summon.
A thirty-two-foot-tall creature appeared on the cavern floor.
She looked like an exaggerated giant human woman crossed lightly with domestic cattle, with warm cream-colored skin, patches of soft brown fur along her limbs and back, small rounded bovine ears, short curved horns, thick legs, wide hips, and a chest so absurdly oversized that each breast was large enough for me to comfortably lie across without approaching the edge.
Her eyes were calm and almost entirely vacant.
The System appraised her.
S-Ranked Hearth-Cow Titaness.
Classification: Domesticated Non-Sapient Humanoid Livestock.
Height: 32 feet.
Intelligence: Instinctive.
Sapience: None.
Primary bred functions: warmth, milk production, carrying, domestic comfort, resting furniture, and low-complexity household service.
Temperament: Extremely docile.
Command comprehension: Simple bonded instructions.
I stared.
"Perfect."
The Titaness looked at me without speaking.
There wasn't enough intelligence behind the eyes for language.
Vera could at least hold a basic conversation.
This thing was closer to a very large, extremely comfortable cow shaped by generations of magic and selective breeding into something humanoid.
I pointed beside the lake.
"Lie down."
The summoning bond carried the intent even if she couldn't understand the words perfectly.
She obeyed.
I climbed onto her.
Her chest was fucking magnificent.
I sank into warm softness deep enough that my entire body settled comfortably against the upper curve of one breast while the other rose beside me like a living wall.
"Oh, fuck yes."
The Titaness made a quiet contented sound and remained still.
Several Parallel Minds objected to the classification of this as a productive use of SS-Ranked summoning magic.
"You're jealous because none of you have bodies."
They went silent.
Then my left wing folded underneath me.
I stopped smiling.
"Motherfucker."
The Titaness wasn't the problem; my anatomy was. I shifted sideways, trapped the other wing instead, muttered a disgusted "No," and sat back up.
There had to be a solution better than redesigning every chair, bed, bath, vehicle seat, toilet, and couch I ever intended to use.
Soul Weaver made the answer embarrassingly obvious.
I entered Soul Space mentally and selected several low-Ranked beast souls whose individual identities had no particular strategic value. Memories, instincts, emotions, self-recognition, personality patterns, and identity were carefully separated and stored while I reduced the remaining structures into purified soul substrate.
Then I turned that substrate into thread.
Soul Weaver still felt disturbingly similar to sewing.
Conveniently, I was also a seamstress.
I used the soul-thread as a metaphysical anchor and designed two stabilized folds in space, one behind each shoulder. They weren't proper pocket dimensions large enough to enter. They were simply folded volumes capable of containing my wings while maintaining their biological and magical connection to my body.
The first test failed dramatically enough that my left wing disappeared halfway, snapped back into normal space, and slapped me across the face.
"Ow! Fuck!"
The Hearth-Cow Titaness stared at me blankly.
"Don't judge me."
She continued staring.
"Good."
I reinforced the spatial anchors, added emergency release structures, tied authorization to my Primordial Soul Core, and made sure blood, nerve, regeneration, and magical pathways remained metaphysically continuous even while the wings were outside ordinary space.
The second test worked. My wings dissolved into violet-blue lines and folded smoothly behind my shoulders until my back became completely clear, and when I leaned backward nothing got trapped beneath me. I rolled around on the Titaness's chest simply because I finally could.
"Oh, this is staying."
Custom Soul-Woven Enchantment completed.
Wingfold.
Stores Valentine's physical wings within bonded stabilized folds of space.
Stored wings remain biologically and metaphysically connected to Valentine Silver.
Deployment and storage are controlled consciously.
Emergency restoration occurs automatically if spatial integrity becomes unsafe.
I summoned my wings and watched black feathers explode outward behind me, then dismissed them again just as easily. "Fucking fantastic."
I settled back into my living mattress and opened the treasure chest inventory.
5 Legendary Lottery Tickets.
1 World Challenge Completion Chest.
1 SSS-Ranked Kingdom Erasure Chest.
4 SS-Ranked Royal Dominion Chests.
18 S-Ranked City Conquest Chests.
96 A-Ranked Regional Destruction Chests.
640 B-Ranked Settlement Chests.
2,400 C-Ranked Resource Chests.
There were enough randomized rewards sitting in front of me that opening them with 41,920 unspent Attribute Points and only 567 Luck started feeling irresponsible.
Not enough to justify dumping ten thousand points into an attribute I didn't fully understand.
But a hundred?
"System. Add one hundred Attribute Points to Luck."
Luck: 567 → 667.
Unspent Attribute Points: 41,920 → 41,820.
"Good."
I opened two C-Ranked Resource Chests first.
The first contained considerably more than one Item.
C-Ranked Resource Chest opened.
100 bushels C-Ranked Preserved Winter Wheat.
10 C-Ranked Silver Trade Pouches.
20 gallons C-Ranked Purified Spring Water.
8 rolls C-Ranked Heavy Wool Cloth.
4 C-Ranked Agricultural Tool Sets.
12 C-Ranked Basic Healing Draughts.
1 C-Ranked Reinforced Combat Boots.
1 C-Ranked Rabbit Breeding Warren Barracks.
The Barracks appeared as a small bronze token.
C-Ranked Rabbit Breeding Warren Barracks.
Undeployed Living-Production Structure.
Deployment Cost: None.
When placed, manifests its own structure directly and begins producing supported living rabbit livestock populations according to its internal production cycle.
That clarified the Barracks distinction nicely. They needed no supplied materials or construction crews; I placed the Item, the Barracks manifested itself, and after that it produced living things according to whatever template it contained.
The second C-Ranked chest gave me another pile of resources and one particularly useful coincidence.
C-Ranked Resource Chest opened.
60 bushels C-Ranked Ironroot Potatoes.
12 C-Ranked Copper Trade Pouches.
30 gallons C-Ranked Mineral Spring Water.
20 pounds C-Ranked Obsidian Salt.
6 C-Ranked Field Medicine Kits.
1 C-Ranked Cold-Weather Bedroll.
1 C-Ranked Magical Snake Farm Barracks.
I opened a B-Ranked Settlement Chest next.
B-Ranked Settlement Chest opened.
400 bushels B-Ranked Preserved Mixed Grain.
80 barrels B-Ranked Preserved Vegetables.
40 barrels B-Ranked Preserved Meat.
240 gallons B-Ranked Enriched Spring Water.
24 B-Ranked Construction Tool Sets.
8 B-Ranked Enchanted Heating Stones.
4 crates B-Ranked Medical Supplies.
18 B-Ranked Gold-and-Silver Trade Pouches.
2 B-Ranked Reinforced Field Shelters.
1 B-Ranked Village Water-Purification Array.
1 B-Ranked Enchanted Longsword.
1 B-Ranked Slime Woman Farm Barracks.
1 B-Ranked Ember Strawberry Seed Packet.
"Slime women."
I opened the Barracks description.
B-Ranked Slime Woman Farm Barracks.
Undeployed Living-Production Structure.
Deployment Cost: None.
Produces living B-Ranked Slime Woman livestock according to internal reproductive and population-management parameters.
"That raises several questions I am not answering today."
I stored it.
The Ember Strawberry seeds were less complicated.
Then I opened one SS-Ranked Royal Dominion Chest.
The black-and-gold container that appeared was large enough for me to sleep inside, and the magical pressure rolling off it made every lower-Ranked chest seem like cheap luggage.
The first reward froze my attention.
Legendary Skill acquired: Ranked Synthesis.
I tried to sit upright, but my hand slipped into the cleavage I was lying across and the rest of me followed. Five humiliating minutes of flailing later, I finally hauled myself back onto the upper curve of the Titaness's breast and sucked in a lungful of clean air instead of warm boob sweat. "Fuck. If I had somehow managed to die by suffocating between a giantess's boobs, that would have been the most pathetic and awesome death imaginable." Once I had my dignity mostly reassembled, I focused on the golden window again. "Expand."
Ranked Synthesis.
Compatible nonliving Items, materials, consumables, undeployed structures, and System-recognized resources of equal Rank may be merged into a new synthesized result.
Synthesis may combine traits, improve quality, integrate enchantments, create hybridized functions, increase Rank, or generate a new Item derived from the supplied components.
Any number of compatible equal-Ranked inputs may be used in one synthesis.
Living beings cannot be used as inputs.
Undeployed Barracks, undeployed Infrastructure Cores, seeds, harvested food, beverages, textiles, ores, refined materials, potions, books, weapons, armor, tools, magical artifacts, and unopened reward containers qualify as nonliving Items.
Standardized Reward Container Ratios:
10 C-Ranked Reward Containers → 1 B-Ranked Reward Container.
50 B-Ranked Reward Containers → 1 A-Ranked Reward Container.
100 A-Ranked Reward Containers → 1 S-Ranked Reward Container.
250 S-Ranked Reward Containers → 1 SS-Ranked Reward Container.
500 SS-Ranked Reward Containers → 1 SSS-Ranked Reward Container.
1,000 SSS-Ranked Reward Containers → 1 God-Ranked Reward Container.
I stared at the last line for a while.
"Oh, that is fucking dangerous."
I looked from my Luck stat to the already-open SS-Ranked chest and made a decision. "You know what? Fuck it." Another hundred Attribute Points moved.
Luck: 667 → 767.
Unspent Attribute Points: 41,820 → 41,720.
I looked at the chest I'd already opened.
"I wonder what I would have gotten if I'd done that 7 minutes earlier."
The System naturally offered no refund on hindsight.
"Oh well." I already had Ranked Synthesis, so complaining about what I might have rolled with another hundred Luck would have been impressively greedy even for me.
Then I remembered Vera.
"Zaric."
Mistress?
"Tell the bimbo she is not allowed to open another treasure chest."
There was a pause.
Reason?
"I can combine unopened treasure chests into higher-Ranked ones now. So from this point forward, unless Vera's life somehow depends on opening something immediately, every chest her System gives her gets sent to me first."
Understood.
"Make sure she understands."
I will tell her that opening a treasure chest without your permission will make you unhappy.
"Perfect."
I closed the Contract and immediately pulled the Rabbit Breeding Warren and Magical Snake Farm back out.
"Okay, let's do something stupid."
One Parallel Mind objected.
"Educationally stupid."
That was better.
I put both C-Ranked Barracks into Ranked Synthesis.
Inputs:
1 C-Ranked Rabbit Breeding Warren Barracks.
1 C-Ranked Magical Snake Farm Barracks.
Compatibility: Moderate.
Proceed?
"Absolutely."
The two bronze tokens dissolved into green and white light.
The magic intertwined, twisted several times, and condensed into a darker silver token.
Synthesis successful.
1 B-Ranked Coilhare Breeding Barracks created.
I laughed before even opening the description.
B-Ranked Coilhare Breeding Barracks.
Undeployed Living-Production Structure.
Produces living B-Ranked Coilhares.
Coilhare: A magical hybrid livestock species combining the rapid reproduction, soft fur, grazing diet, and social temperament of rabbits with serpentine flexibility, mild venom production, enhanced thermal sensing, and scale growth along the spine and tail.
Primary harvests: B-Ranked Coilhare Fur, B-Ranked Shed Scales, B-Ranked Diluted Coilhare Venom, meat.
"That is fucking adorable and horrifying."
I was keeping it.
Then I tested materials.
One pound of A-Ranked Hellfire Wool and one pound of A-Ranked Arctic Sheep Wool entered Ranked Synthesis together. The result was one pound of S-Ranked Frostfire Wool, silver-white through most of the fiber with ember-red tips, capable of resisting extreme cold and heat while storing small amounts of Fire and Ice Mana.
The spaceflight minds immediately became interested.
Then I pushed harder.
Several A-Ranked rewards from my existing Inventory went into the next experiment.
Inputs:
1 A-Ranked Arctic Sheep Farm Barracks.
1 A-Ranked Emberhorn Goat Ranch Barracks.
100 gallons A-Ranked Geothermal Spring Water.
10 pounds A-Ranked Hellfire Wool.
Compatibility: High.
"Do it."
The resulting synthesis took longer.
Synthesis successful.
1 S-Ranked Frostfire Hornsheep Ranch Barracks created.
Produces living S-Ranked Frostfire Hornsheep.
Frostfire Hornsheep possess dense temperature-regulating wool, high resistance to Fire and Ice Magic, heat-storing horns, strong cold tolerance, and the ability to produce nutrient-rich magically warmed milk.
Primary harvests: S-Ranked Frostfire Hornsheep Wool, S-Ranked Frostfire Horn, S-Ranked Enriched Hornsheep Milk, meat.
I stared at the new Barracks.
"So I can feed the Skill two Barracks, magical water, and fucking wool, and it understands the assignment."
Notice: Correct.
"Oh, we're going to abuse the shit out of this."
The rest of the first SS-Ranked chest contained:
1 SS-Ranked Arcane Environmental Laboratory.
1 S-Ranked Royal Scholar Barracks.
4 S-Ranked Precision Fabrication Arrays.
6 S-Ranked High-Capacity Mana Reservoirs.
12 A-Ranked Automated Artisan Workshops.
2,000 tons S-Ranked Royal Structural Composite.
1 S-Ranked Royal Infrastructure Archive.
40 tons A-Ranked Alchemical Silver.
80 tons A-Ranked Rune-Cut Crystal.
600 gallons S-Ranked Royal Mana Solution.
37 A-Ranked Rainbow-Silk Blankets.
I stared at the blankets.
"Thirty-seven?"
Notice: Correct.
"Specific."
The S-Ranked Royal Scholar Barracks interested me more.
Once deployed, it would produce living scholars specializing in magical theory, runes, alchemy, history, magical engineering, natural philosophy, and related fields.
That solved the first part of my Core research problem.
I still needed somebody specifically experienced with Cores.
Maybe Luck would help.
I started processing the C-Ranked stockpile.
Instead of opening every chest, I split them. I eventually opened one thousand C-Ranked Resource Chests in total, counting the first two samples, while another thousand C-Ranked chests were synthesized into one hundred B-Ranked Settlement Chests. The remaining four hundred C-Ranked containers stayed unopened as emergency or future synthesis stock.
With Luck at 767, the Barracks rate was fucking absurd.
The consolidated results from the thousand opened C-Ranked containers included mountains of basic supplies and 614 separate C-Ranked Barracks.
The System summarized the larger categories.
C-Ranked Bulk Food and Agriculture Rewards:
184,000 bushels C-Ranked Preserved Grain.
31,400 bushels C-Ranked Ironroot Potatoes.
18,600 bushels C-Ranked Cold-Wheat Seed.
11,200 bushels C-Ranked Salt-Barley Seed.
6,840 barrels C-Ranked Preserved Vegetables.
4,710 barrels C-Ranked Preserved Meat.
680 tons C-Ranked Obsidian Salt.
824,000 gallons C-Ranked Purified Spring Water.
C-Ranked Civilian and Construction Rewards:
18,440 C-Ranked Tool Sets.
22,318 C-Ranked Clothing Sets.
9,410 C-Ranked Heavy Wool Blankets.
8,204 C-Ranked Cold-Weather Bedrolls.
5,881 C-Ranked Healing Supply Crates.
73,200 tons C-Ranked Prepared Building Stone.
26,400 tons C-Ranked Preserved Lumber.
8,700 tons C-Ranked Iron Construction Fittings.
C-Ranked Magical Agriculture Rewards:
48 C-Ranked Ember Strawberry Seed Packets.
31 C-Ranked Frost Pumpkin Seed Packets.
22 C-Ranked Ironroot Potato Seed Lots.
19 C-Ranked Minor Mana Grape Vines.
16 C-Ranked Moonlit Rice Seed Lots.
11 C-Ranked Necrotic-Cleansing Moss Cultures.
7 C-Ranked Mana Coffee Saplings.
"Coffee survives."
The System continued.
C-Ranked Barracks acquired: 614.
The list was insane: C-Ranked Rabbit Warrens, C-Ranked Sheep Farms, C-Ranked Goat Farms, C-Ranked Cat Ranches, C-Ranked Magical Snake Farms, C-Ranked Glow-Moth Houses, C-Ranked Giant Medicinal Snail Farms, C-Ranked Fish Hatcheries, C-Ranked Cold Lizard Ranches, C-Ranked Beetle Farms, C-Ranked Slime Farms, several C-Ranked humanoid livestock Barracks, and one C-Ranked Giant Cabbage Farm Barracks that produced living mobile cabbage creatures for reasons I did not understand and refused to question.
I sent Zaric a catalog instead of blindly transferring everything.
He immediately requested most conventional food-producing Barracks.
The weird shit stayed with me.
The B-Ranked stockpile became even more interesting. After adding the one hundred synthesized containers, I had 739 B-Ranked chests remaining after my original sample. I opened three hundred, and 238 of those contained at least one Barracks.
The more notable rewards included:
12 B-Ranked Slime Woman Farm Barracks.
8 B-Ranked Arctic Fox Ranch Barracks.
17 B-Ranked Firehorn Sheep Farm Barracks.
6 B-Ranked Mermaid Coastal Hatchery Barracks.
9 B-Ranked Alchemical Serpent Farm Barracks.
4 B-Ranked Mushroom Folk Cultivation Barracks.
2 B-Ranked Honey-Bee Woman Apiary Barracks.
1 B-Ranked Giant Otter Ranch Barracks.
"We are definitely keeping the otters."
The B-Ranked plant rewards were just as useful.
44 B-Ranked Ember Strawberry Seed Packets.
18 B-Ranked Lightning Apricot Seeds.
12 B-Ranked Frost Plum Saplings.
8 B-Ranked Mana Coffee Groves.
6 B-Ranked Fire-Peach Seeds.
5 B-Ranked Silverleaf Tea Groves.
3 B-Ranked Poison-Eating Vine Cultures.
Then came the A-Ranked containers.
I opened fifty.
Forty-six contained at least one Barracks.
"Luck is absolutely doing something."
The A-Ranked Barracks included living-production structures for advanced magical livestock, humanoid subjects, high-end beasts, specialized agricultural creatures, magical craftsmen species, and several things whose descriptions were sufficiently fucking strange that I marked them for researcher review.
Then I opened all eighteen S-Ranked City Conquest Chests.
Seventeen contained Barracks.
That was ridiculous even by my standards.
The most important included:
1 S-Ranked Royal Scholar Barracks.
1 S-Ranked Arcane Engineer Barracks.
1 S-Ranked Master Alchemist Barracks.
1 S-Ranked Deep-Sea Merfolk Researcher Barracks.
1 S-Ranked High-Elven Agriculturalist Barracks.
1 S-Ranked Rune-Smith Dwarf Barracks.
1 S-Ranked Beast-Tamer Academy Barracks.
1 S-Ranked Giant Artisan Barracks.
1 S-Ranked Phoenix Keeper Barracks.
1 S-Ranked Basilisk Ranch Barracks.
1 S-Ranked Storm Roc Aerie Barracks.
1 S-Ranked Frost Giant Labor Barracks.
1 S-Ranked Infernal Cow-Woman Dairy Barracks.
1 S-Ranked Dryad Orchard-Keeper Barracks.
1 S-Ranked Succubus Palace Barracks.
1 S-Ranked Oceanic Beast Ranch Barracks.
1 S-Ranked Rune-Scribe Barracks.
The eighteenth chest had no Barracks but instead contained several high-Ranked Items, including:
1 S-Ranked Municipal Sanitation Nexus.
1 S-Ranked Regional Water-Purification Array.
1 S-Ranked Long-Duration Cold Storage Vault.
20 tons S-Ranked Spellglass.
400 gallons S-Ranked Restoration Spring Water.
12 S-Ranked Arcane Engineering Reference Books.
I stared at the sanitation nexus.
"Keeping that. Civilization collapses very fucking quickly when everybody's toilets stop working."
The remaining three SS-Ranked Royal Dominion Chests were opened individually.
The second contained:
1 SS-Ranked Royal Artificer Barracks.
1 SS-Ranked Leviathan Keeper Barracks.
1 SS-Ranked Universal Environmental Laboratory.
4 S-Ranked Pressure-Sealed Material Test Chambers.
1 S-Ranked Gas and Atmosphere Analysis Array.
60 tons SS-Ranked Royal Magitech Alloy.
500 gallons S-Ranked High-Purity Mana Suspension.
The third contained:
1 SS-Ranked Golden Crow Barracks.
1 SS-Ranked Kitsune Barracks.
1 SS-Ranked Royal Crystal-Growth Furnace.
1 SS-Ranked Precision Measurement Array.
8 S-Ranked High-Accuracy Tracking Mounts.
24 S-Ranked Star-Metal Reference Samples.
40 A-Ranked Astronomical Treatises.
The fourth contained:
1 SS-Ranked Royal Magitech Engineer Barracks.
1 SS-Ranked Oceanic Explorer Barracks.
1 SS-Ranked Precision Runic Fabrication Nexus.
2 S-Ranked Deep-Pressure Research Chambers.
6 S-Ranked High-Capacity Industrial Enchanters.
120 tons S-Ranked Arcane Structural Ceramic.
88 A-Ranked Rainbow-Silk Expedition Tents.
High Luck apparently liked giving me blankets and tents almost as much as it liked giving me living-production structures.
Then came the SSS-Ranked Kingdom Erasure Chest.
The container that manifested above the cavern floor looked less like a chest and more like somebody had built a shrine around the concept of excessive rewards.
I opened it.
SSS-Ranked Kingdom Erasure Chest opened.
1 SSS-Ranked Imperial Artificer Corps Barracks.
I sat upright so fast I nearly rolled off the Hearth-Cow Titaness.
"You're fucking kidding me."
SSS-Ranked Imperial Artificer Corps Barracks.
Undeployed Living-Production Structure.
Deployment Cost: None.
Produces living high-Rank artificers, runesmiths, machinists, magical construction specialists, and artifact analysts with broad training in infrastructure engineering.
The produced specialists do not possess proprietary Corewright construction methods and must research unfamiliar Infrastructure Cores before attempting reproduction or major modification.
"Now that's useful."
These people could give me a serious Core research team without magically handing me the answer, which meant Zaric's search for actual Corewright manuals, damaged examples, and somebody willing to teach us still mattered. The rest of the chest was almost as obscene.
1 SSS-Ranked Grand Arcane Foundry Heart.
1 SS-Ranked Royal Magitech Research Barracks.
1 SS-Ranked Moon Rabbit Woman Barracks.
1 SS-Ranked Ancient Beast Breeder Barracks.
3 SS-Ranked Strategic Mana Reactor Hearts.
12 SS-Ranked Industrial Enchantment Engines.
40 S-Ranked Heavy Arcane Fabricators.
120 S-Ranked Industrial Golem Control Cores.
25,000 tons SSS-Ranked Reinforced Arcane Feedstock.
8,000 gallons SS-Ranked Primal Mana Solution.
1 SSS-Ranked High Magical Metallurgy Archive.
1 SSS-Ranked Megastructure Engineering Archive.
The Foundry Heart didn't design anything by itself, which I appreciated. It was an industrial system capable of coordinating high-Ranked smelting, alloying, casting, magical material processing, component fabrication, and large-scale manufacturing from supplied designs.
In other words, once I knew how to build a spaceship, I had something capable of helping manufacture the fucking thing.
Then I opened the World Challenge Completion Chest.
Its gold looked completely different from the Vaskian containers.
World Challenge Completion Chest opened.
Unlike the higher-Ranked Vaskian chests, the rewards weren't suspiciously tailored toward whatever problem happened to be occupying my thoughts today. They looked more like what I would actually expect from completing a world-scale Empire Building challenge: infrastructure, skilled labor, reference material, agricultural resources, and enough high-quality construction supplies to make founding another settlement dramatically easier without magically doing the work for me.
1 SSS-Ranked Imperial Civil Works Archive.
The archive contains 11,420 texts, engineering records, construction reports, failure investigations, diagrams, and historical case studies covering roads, bridges, aqueducts, sewers, canals, dams, fortifications, subterranean construction, magical utility grids, large-scale wards, city planning, harbor construction, agricultural infrastructure, disaster recovery, and long-term settlement maintenance.
The archive contains no complete spacecraft designs, orbital engineering knowledge, or technology automatically compatible with Valentine's future projects.
"Good. Actual information I still have to fucking learn from."
The next rewards appeared underneath it.
1 SS-Ranked Master Surveyor Barracks.
Produces living SS-Ranked Master Surveyors trained in terrestrial cartography, geology, mineral identification, land assessment, structural surveying, hydrology, and magical terrain analysis.
1 SS-Ranked Royal Physician Barracks.
Produces living SS-Ranked physicians and healers trained in mundane medicine, magical trauma care, disease treatment, anatomy, surgery, and long-term public health.
1 SS-Ranked Imperial Seed Vault.
Contains 4,800 individually preserved seed, spore, tuber, cutting, and sapling varieties ranging from C-Rank to SS-Rank. Contents include staple crops, medicinal plants, fibers, timber species, fruit crops, animal-feed crops, alchemical plants, decorative species, and magical agricultural varieties.
4 S-Ranked Regional Ward Anchors.
20 S-Ranked Heavy Construction Golems.
800 tons SS-Ranked Imperial Structural Composite.
2,400 gallons S-Ranked Purified Mana Spring Water.
600 tons S-Ranked Preserved Fertile Agricultural Soil.
240 A-Ranked Civil Engineering Field Manuals.
96 A-Ranked Rainbow-Silk Expedition Blankets.
I stared at the final number.
"Ninety-six fucking blankets."
Notice: Correct.
"Somewhere there is a god responsible for randomized loot tables who really wants me to be comfortable."
Still, the overall reward was excellent. The Master Surveyors could tell me what I was actually building on instead of relying entirely on undead specialists, the physicians would become important the moment I started filling this place with living researchers and workers, and the Civil Works Archive contained thousands of examples of people discovering the hard way that a bridge, sewer, dam, tunnel, or city wall had been designed like shit. Failure reports were usually more valuable than perfect blueprints because they explained what had gone wrong and why.
None of it gave me a spaceship.
None of it taught me orbital mechanics.
None of it told me how to keep a living crew alive between stars.
It gave me resources and people who could help build the civilization that would eventually solve those problems.
That was considerably more useful in the long term.
That left the five Legendary Lottery Tickets.
I had been carrying the damn things for long enough, and with Luck sitting at 767 there probably wasn't going to be a much better time to use them unless I started dumping thousands of Attribute Points into probability and accidentally turned myself into some kind of reality-warping casino demon.
"Open them individually."
The first ticket dissolved into spiraling gold.
Legendary Lottery Ticket consumed.
Legendary Perk acquired: Linguistic Savant.
Linguistic Savant dramatically improves the speed at which you identify patterns within spoken, written, symbolic, coded, magical, and nonhuman languages.
The Perk does not automatically translate unknown languages or provide knowledge you have never learned. Sufficient examples, context, study, experimentation, or interaction are still required.
I smiled.
"Okay, that's useful without being fucking cheating."
If I eventually met aliens, I still had to actually listen to them, study their writing, establish context, and figure out what their symbols meant. The Perk merely meant I'd be exceptionally good at doing it.
Considering I had already created my own compressed magical language and learned multiple runic systems, that fit me disturbingly well.
The second ticket burned away.
Legendary Lottery Ticket consumed.
1 SSS-Ranked Stormglass Astral Lens acquired.
A circular slab of blue-black crystal appeared in Inventory. It was nearly six feet across and several inches thick, with tiny silver flashes moving through its interior like distant lightning.
SSS-Ranked Stormglass Astral Lens.
A magically grown optical crystal possessing exceptional light transmission, magical-spectrum clarity, distortion resistance, and long-distance focusing properties.
The Astral Lens is a component rather than a complete observation device. Effective astronomical use requires a properly designed supporting instrument, mounting system, calibration array, secondary optics or magical equivalents, tracking system, and appropriate observational methodology.
I laughed.
"Now that's more like it."
The System hadn't handed me a magical telescope capable of finding Lindsey.
It had handed me an absurdly good fucking lens.
What I did with it was my problem.
Several Parallel Minds immediately opened a project for testing its refractive properties, magical-spectrum behavior, structural tolerances, and whether several smaller lenses could eventually be synthesized or combined into something better.
The third ticket disappeared.
Legendary Lottery Ticket consumed.
Legendary Skill acquired: Failure Analysis.
I raised an eyebrow.
Failure Analysis allows detailed inspection of a failed, broken, damaged, or destroyed nonliving construct to improve identification of contributing structural, magical, material, runic, mechanical, or energetic faults.
Information provided is limited by Valentine's existing knowledge, available evidence, condition of the remains, complexity of the failure, and quality of examination.
Failure Analysis does not reveal unknown scientific principles, supply missing knowledge automatically, or guarantee that a corrected design will succeed.
I slowly grinned.
"Oh, I am going to break so much shit."
That was almost perfect for what I wanted. I could build something, test it, watch it explode, collect the pieces, figure out why it exploded, and make the next version slightly less inclined to kill everyone involved. That was actual fucking engineering rather than the System politely handing me the answer.
The fourth Lottery Ticket vanished in another flare of gold.
Legendary Lottery Ticket consumed.
1 SSS-Ranked Archive of Applied Mechanics acquired.
Contents: 7,806 S-Ranked to SSS-Ranked books, experimental records, engineering journals, mechanical diagrams, mathematical texts, material studies, and failure reports collected from multiple magical civilizations.
Primary subjects include gears, bearings, pumps, pressure systems, fluid movement, mechanical advantage, vibration, structural loading, heat transfer, magical-mechanical interfaces, precision manufacturing, large machinery, clockwork, hydraulic systems, and enchanted mechanisms.
The Archive contains no complete modern aerospace technology, orbital mechanics curriculum, interstellar propulsion design, or ready-made spacecraft engineering system.
I stared at the description for several seconds.
"That is a fuckload of homework."
One of my Parallel Minds created an entire new library wing inside the Mind Palace.
Another immediately started cross-referencing the Archive with the Vaskian airships.
A third added the Civil Works Archive.
Within seconds I had several thousand years of engineering experience from civilizations that had solved completely different problems using completely different combinations of magic and machinery.
None of them had solved my problem for me.
But I could learn from all of them.
"Yeah. Keeping that very fucking safe."
The fifth and final ticket burned more slowly than the others before collapsing into a single dark seed wrapped in faint green-gold light.
Legendary Lottery Ticket consumed.
1 SSS-Ranked Worldroot Seed acquired.
SSS-Ranked Worldroot Tree.
A non-sapient magical tree capable of developing exceptionally deep and resilient root systems, gradually adapting to difficult terrestrial environments, stabilizing damaged soil and rock, storing large amounts of ambient magic, and supporting compatible surrounding ecosystems.
Worldroot Trees require suitable soil, water, magical energy, nutrients, and time to mature.
Environmental adaptation occurs gradually rather than instantly.
The tree does not create planetary Ley Lines, terraform entire worlds, generate unlimited resources, or make otherwise lethal planets automatically habitable.
I turned the seed over inside the Inventory interface. It was still potentially incredible, just not immediately. Planting it somewhere didn't magically produce a colony; it needed soil, water, nutrients, magic, decades of growth, and an environment it could actually survive long enough to adapt to. On Earth, it could become the center of an enormous magical ecosystem. On another world, assuming I ever found one suitable for it, the tree might become one important part of a long-term settlement project rather than the entire fucking solution.
I stored it beside the God-Ranked Ley Line Seed and immediately put a warning around both of them.
DO NOT PLANT IRREPLACEABLE MAGICAL SEEDS BECAUSE THEY LOOK INTERESTING.
Several Parallel Minds acknowledged the rule, and one added SERIOUSLY underneath it for emphasis. "Yeah, yeah."
The five Lottery Tickets were gone, and none of them had handed me an answer to Lindsey.
Instead I had become better at learning languages, gained an extraordinary optical component I still needed to build an instrument around, acquired a Skill that would make failed experiments more informative, received thousands of engineering texts I would actually have to study, and obtained a tree that might become incredibly valuable several decades after I eventually figured out where the fuck to plant it.
The treasure processing had taken most of the day.
It had also turned my Inventory into something substantially more insane than it had been when I started.
I now possessed entire living-production chains for species I'd never heard of, enough agricultural genetics to make a fantasy biologist orgasm, a much deeper pool of researchers and technical specialists, industrial facilities, optical and measurement equipment, survey specialists, magical crops, settlement Cores, and Ranked Synthesis sitting in the middle of it all waiting for me to start throwing incompatible shit together in the name of science. None of those people or tools magically knew how to build the things I actually wanted, but I finally had enough adjacent expertise to start asking serious questions.
I still didn't immediately deploy half the researcher Barracks because I had nowhere appropriate to put them yet. The mountain survey solved that problem several hours later.
An Ossuary Geomancer approached with four Grave Cartographers and three Sepulchral Architects while an expanded model of the entire region formed above the lake. The visible cavern system had become enormous enough that my original mental image of an underground base seemed almost embarrassingly small.
The central mountain was stable enough for the scale of construction I had in mind. Several areas required reinforcement before heavy excavation, but the main cavern could comfortably support the fortress and substantial future expansion. Four major freshwater networks crossed the region, seven significant geothermal areas had been identified, one submerged tunnel reached the fjord directly, and another partially flooded passage led to a concealed coastal cavern that could eventually be widened into a protected harbor.
There were magical creatures throughout the outer mountain and ocean caves but no sapient settlement, no permanent civilization, no active territorial claimant, and no existing Guardian connected to the Class 5 Ley Line.
One Abyssal Delver had been attacked by an A-Ranked aquatic predator.
"It broke its teeth?"
"Three."
"Poor thing. Leave it alone."
Mineral deposits lit the map next: iron, copper, nickel, chromium, coal, huge quantities of mundane construction stone, magical crystals, and several veins of unknown magically saturated ore near the Class 5 Ley Line. "Nobody touches the weird ore until the Environmental Laboratory, proper assay equipment, and actual researchers get a look at it."
The Architects acknowledged the order and showed me the proposed fortress site. It fit easily, as did the Agricultural Domain, while the SSS-Ranked Imperial Artificer Corps Barracks could eventually anchor a research campus and the SSS-Ranked Grand Arcane Foundry Heart had several viable industrial locations if I decided to deploy it here.
The future harbor had room for submarines and surface vessels. A vertical shaft could eventually connect a spacecraft construction area to the surface. The Class 5 Ley Line ran safely beneath the settlement zone.
I stared at the projection for several minutes before grinning. "This is fucking ridiculous." For once, I meant that entirely as a compliment.
The Hearth-Cow Titaness had fallen asleep beneath me sometime during the reports, her slow breathing gently lifting and lowering her gigantic udders under my body.
I rolled off her chest, restored my wings, and headed toward the deep access route. The Class 5 Ley Line waited beneath hundreds of feet of stone, and unlike the first time I had claimed one, I now knew exactly what I was touching: a physical, immovable magical structure running through the world, an external source of power that was effectively inexhaustible for anything I was likely to do locally, and—most importantly—currently unclaimed.
I rested one hand against the nearest gold-and-white current and allowed my authority to spread through the contact.
Notice: Unclaimed Class 5 Ley Line detected.
Active Guardian: None.
Conflicting custodial authority: None.
Establish Guardian Authority?
Yes/No
"Yes."
The flow responded almost immediately.
There was tremendous magical pressure, but nothing remotely threatening. My Primordial body tolerated it without effort, and the heat-like sensation generated by raw magical friction barely registered. I could probably have stood inside a dragon's breath while doing this and wondered when somebody planned to turn the temperature up.
Several seconds later, the Ley Line recognized my authority.
Guardian Authority established.
Claimed Class 5 Ley Lines: 2.
"Excellent."
Then I hid it, just like the one in the Black Forest.
The concealment system grew from what I had learned in the Black Forest, but this time I had an entire mountain and a hundred SS-Ranked specialists available to help install physical anchors. The eventual goal wasn't merely hiding a Ley Line. I needed to hide laboratories, factories, magical agriculture, living populations, airship hangars, harbor traffic, excavation, and eventually a fucking spacecraft program.
The Class 5 Ley Line powered the passive layers. Divination moved around the region. Magic Sight from outside saw harmless background flows. Surface travelers found easier routes elsewhere. Known fissures became almost impossible to recognize without authorization. Heat could be distributed through natural geothermal structures.
Construction vibrations could be dispersed through the mountain. Future entrances, ocean access, and launch structures were reserved inside the ward architecture from the beginning. I deliberately left the permanent Infrastructure Core installation for later.
The SSS-Ranked Imperial Artificer Corps Barracks had just fallen into my lap, along with several lower-Ranked research and engineering Barracks. None of them possessed proprietary Corewright methods, but I would still be a fucking idiot to permanently choose a city-grid design before giving actual specialists time to study the artifacts and compare them against whatever Zaric managed to acquire from the people who knew how to build them.
The fortress didn't need that delay. I had surveyed everything that mattered: fresh water, geothermal energy, ocean access, mining potential, an unclaimed Class 5 Ley Line I had now taken custodianship of, and enough room for a city far larger than anything I needed immediately. I opened Inventory.
SS-Ranked Necromancer Fortress & Infernal Agricultural Domain.
Unique Placeable Dominion Item.
Permanent placement under ordinary conditions.
The translucent structure appeared over the prepared location.
Current Site Evaluation: Excellent.
Proceed with placement?
"Yes."
The mountain shook as black stone unfolded into reality along the western side of the cavern and the fortress anchored itself to Earth. Walls and towers rose around massive gates while workshops, laboratories, storage complexes, summoning halls, living quarters, and the Soul Forge reappeared inside. Spatial expansions stabilized in sequence, and the Infernal Agricultural Domain unfolded beside the main structure, reconnecting its evolved internal farmland, livestock environments, cultivation zones, and everything else that had been carried across worlds inside the combined Item.
The manifestation took nearly ten minutes.
When it finally finished, the fortress dominated an entire side of the cavern while still occupying only a fraction of the available space.
Permanent placement completed.
External Class 5 Ley Line detected.
Establish regulated infrastructure connection?
"Yes. Regulated only."
The fortress came alive. Purple, green, blue, and silver light moved across its walls. Laboratories began environmental checks. The Agricultural Domain stabilized.
I looked from the Hearth-Cow Titaness sleeping near the lake to the fortress and then to the ridiculous number of undeployed Barracks waiting in my Inventory. "Okay." The SS-Ranked Royal Magitech Research Barracks and SSS-Ranked Imperial Artificer Corps Barracks were obvious early candidates for deployment, followed by the S-Ranked Royal Scholar, Arcane Engineer, Rune-Smith Dwarf, and other specialist Barracks that could help me build an actual research institution instead of relying entirely on myself and thirty-nine versions of me arguing inside one skull. None of them knew Corewright trade secrets automatically, so the Core research project would still begin with observation, disassembly of expendable examples, comparison against the Royal Infrastructure Archive, and whatever Zaric managed to acquire from actual Corewrights.
Then there were the airships: three S-Ranked Royal Airships and forty-two A-Ranked Military Airships. Most of the research examples I kept were eventually going to be disassembled, but not tomorrow and definitely not all at once. First they would be documented, scanned, mapped, and tested intact; only then would the simplest military model come apart piece by piece until we understood every fucking component.
One Parallel Mind opened the project.
MAGICAL AIRSHIP REVERSE ENGINEERING
The research categories expanded naturally: lift, propulsion, power distribution, structural runes, hull materials, navigation, control systems, ward integration, environmental systems, failure modes, maintenance access, magical efficiency, and then eventually vacuum behavior.
This was going to take a while, and for once that felt right. I had researchers, laboratories, a Foundry Heart I still needed to decide how and where to deploy, fabrication systems, and an industrial civilization on another planet that could eventually manufacture components for me once Zaric rebuilt enough of it. More importantly, I had a beacon pointing toward Lindsey and a magical portrait sitting near her nursery so she would grow up knowing my face, my voice, my stories, and exactly how fucking determined I was to reach her.
I also had a biological reminder that sometime within the next week I needed to find an intelligent adult sexual partner unless I wanted my own Lust-aligned nature becoming increasingly distracting, although considering the collection of high-Ranked Succubi I could summon, that was probably the easiest problem on my schedule.
One Parallel Mind brought up HOT ALIEN WOMEN? again.
I laughed.
"Eventually."
The paired Locator rested in my palm, still pointing through the planet toward Lindsey's world. There could be thousands of inhabited planets between us, which meant the route might eventually include alien nations, alien magic, alien monsters, alien women with giga-sized boobs and huge hips, mining colonies, research stations, and worlds where I might eventually plant Infrastructure Cores. Maybe I would even find some nearly dead planet where the God-Ranked Ley Line Seed could turn inaccessible ambient magic into an actual planetary magical network. The universe had gone from an empty distance separating me from Lindsey into something enormous, dangerous, unexplored, and potentially fascinating.
That didn't make the distance hurt less. It just gave me more reasons to cross it. I stored the Locator safely and walked toward my fortress while the Class 5 Ley Line flowed silently beneath the stone.
I had several thousand remaining low- and middle-Ranked reward containers to process, hundreds of Barracks to catalogue, bizarre synthesis experiments to perform, magical researchers to deploy, an entire mountain to convert into a hidden city, and forty-five airships waiting to teach me how another civilization had solved magical flight.
Finding Lindsey could take years, and as much as I fucking hated that, I could work with it. I had nearly a thousand years before Harry Potter was supposed to walk into Hogwarts, a body that didn't give a shit about aging, an industrial supply line spanning astronomical distance, and thirty-nine extra minds incapable of leaving me alone. Time wasn't the problem; making sure I used it well was.
The fortress gates opened as I approached.
"All right," I said, smiling as I stepped inside. "Let's start building some fucking impossible shit."
