...

Now only ninety minutes remained to discover how well that preparation would stand against one of Europe's finest footballing nations.

Night gradually settled over Amsterdam.

The streets surrounding the Johan Cruijff Arena were already alive hours before kick-off.

Orange shirts flowed toward the stadium from every direction, filling the pavements with anticipation. Dutch supporters sang as they walked together, scarves wrapped tightly around their necks in the cool evening air.

Mixed among them were pockets of England fans.

White shirts.

St George's flags draped over shoulders.

The familiar chant of "England! England!" echoed from outside cafés and along the streets leading toward the stadium.

Although officially listed as an international friendly, the atmosphere suggested something far more significant.

England against the Netherlands had always carried its own weight.

It was a fixture built on history, pride and generations of memorable encounters.

At England's team hotel, the atmosphere contrasted sharply with the excitement outside.

Everything remained calm.

Measured.

Routine.

Dinner had been served several hours earlier before players returned to their rooms for a short period of rest.

There were no unnecessary conversations.

No loud music.

Everyone understood that the preparation was complete.

Now it was simply a matter of performing.

At exactly six o'clock, Gareth Southgate's message arrived through the team group.

Lobby. 6:15 PM.

Room 614 remained unusually quiet.

Francesco sat tying the laces of his trainers while Walker adjusted the collar of his England tracksuit.

Walker glanced across the room.

"Big night."

Francesco nodded.

"It is."

Walker smiled.

"You captain England tonight."

Francesco looked down for a second before exhaling quietly.

"I know."

"No pressure then."

Francesco laughed softly.

"I don't think that's how pressure works."

Walker stood up and picked up his backpack.

"You'll be fine."

"You've captained Arsenal in Europe."

"This isn't much different."

Francesco smiled.

"It feels different."

Walker understood exactly what he meant.

Club football was one thing.

Leading your country onto the pitch was something else entirely.

He simply placed a reassuring hand on Francesco's shoulder.

"Enjoy it."

The England squad gathered in the hotel lobby exactly as instructed.

Nobody was late.

Southgate looked around with quiet satisfaction before speaking.

"Evening, gentlemen."

The players answered together.

"Evening, boss."

"The work is done."

"There are no new tactical meetings."

"No last-minute changes."

He paused.

"I want you to trust everything we've prepared this week."

"Trust yourselves."

"And enjoy the occasion."

Several players nodded.

Southgate smiled.

"Let's go."

Outside, the team coach waited beneath police escort.

Equipment staff loaded the final bags into the luggage compartment before players climbed aboard.

The journey toward the Johan Cruijff Arena lasted barely twenty minutes.

As the coach approached the stadium, the atmosphere outside became increasingly vibrant.

Thousands of supporters surrounded the area.

Orange smoke drifted through sections of the crowd.

England fans answered with songs of their own.

Several supporters applauded as the Three Lions coach slowly passed through the security gates.

Lingard looked through the window.

"Good atmosphere."

Henderson nodded.

"They always create one here."

Walker looked toward Francesco.

"You alright?"

Francesco smiled.

"Yeah."

"Just taking it in."

"This is one of those nights."

Walker agreed.

"It definitely is."

The team coach eventually disappeared beneath the stadium into the underground arrival area.

Security staff directed the squad toward the players' entrance.

Inside, the familiar routine immediately took over.

Medical staff.

UEFA officials.

Equipment managers.

Everything operated with quiet efficiency.

England's dressing room had already been prepared perfectly.

Each player's match shirt hung neatly above their locker.

Boots stood polished beneath every seat.

Energy drinks and recovery snacks had been arranged carefully around the room.

Francesco walked toward his place before stopping for a brief moment.

Above his locker hung a white England shirt.

Across the back…

FRANCESCO

10

Folded carefully beside it rested something else.

The captain's armband.

He picked it up slowly.

For just a second he simply looked at it.

Walker noticed.

"You've earned it."

Francesco smiled quietly.

"I just hope I do it justice."

"You will."

Nearby, Harry Kane walked over.

Kane extended his hand.

"Congratulations."

"It suits you."

Francesco shook it warmly.

"Thank you."

"I appreciate it."

Kane smiled.

"You don't need to change anything."

"Just be yourself."

Those words settled naturally.

That had always been Francesco's approach.

A member of England's support staff entered.

"Warm-up in fifteen minutes."

The players immediately began changing.

Instead of their match shirts, they pulled on navy England training tops designed specifically for pre-match warm-ups.

GPS vests were fitted beneath their clothing.

Boots were laced.

Tape was applied.

Music played quietly through a portable speaker in one corner of the dressing room.

Nothing loud.

Just enough to maintain a relaxed atmosphere.

Walker bounced lightly on his toes.

"I always enjoy this part."

"The warm-up?"

"No."

"The moment before the warm-up."

Francesco laughed.

"That makes absolutely no sense."

"I know."

Eventually the tunnel steward appeared.

"England."

"Five minutes."

Southgate stood.

"Let's go."

The squad rose together.

One by one they followed the tunnel toward the pitch.

As soon as they emerged, the noise struck them.

More than fifty thousand supporters filled the Johan Cruijff Arena.

Almost every seat had been taken.

Orange dominated the stands.

England's travelling supporters occupied one corner, proudly waving St George's flags.

A warm round of applause greeted the visiting players as they stepped onto the pitch.

Several England fans immediately spotted Francesco wearing the captain's armband around his sleeve.

A chant began almost instantly.

"England!"

"England!"

"England!"

The warm-up itself followed familiar routines.

Short passing sequences.

Acceleration runs.

Shooting drills.

Crossing exercises.

Pickford worked separately with the goalkeeping coaches.

At one end of the pitch, Francesco and Kane exchanged quick one-touch combinations before finishing from different angles.

Southgate watched everything carefully.

Steve Holland occasionally offered brief reminders.

"Tempo."

"Sharper."

"Good."

After twenty-five minutes, the final shooting drill concluded.

Francesco received one last pass from Sterling before placing his finish neatly into the corner.

The England supporters applauded loudly.

Walker jogged over.

"Save one of those for later."

"I'll try."

"You'd better."

The referee signalled that warm-ups had ended.

Both squads applauded their supporters before disappearing back down the tunnel.

Inside the dressing room, the atmosphere changed immediately.

Training tops came off.

Match shirts replaced them.

White shirts.

Blue shorts.

White socks.

Each player quietly completed their own routine.

Some listened to music.

Some stretched.

Some simply sat in silence.

Francesco carefully wrapped the captain's armband around his left arm before tightening it.

He looked around the room.

Nobody seemed nervous.

Focused.

Yes.

Nervous.

No.

Southgate walked toward the tactics board positioned at the front of the room.

The conversations stopped immediately.

"Lads."

He picked up a magnetic marker before arranging the formation.

"We start in our 4-1-2-3."

The board quickly filled with names.

Jordan Pickford in goal.

Danny Rose at left-back.

John Stones and Joe Gomez in central defence.

Kyle Walker at right-back.

Jordan Henderson sitting in front of the back four.

Jesse Lingard and Dele Alli playing slightly ahead in midfield.

The front three.

Francesco.

Harry Kane.

Raheem Sterling.

Southgate looked toward each player individually.

"Jordan."

He nodded toward Pickford.

"Keep organising."

"Danny."

"Stay aware of their wide runners."

"John."

"Joe."

"I want calm possession."

"Don't force anything."

He moved through the team.

"Hendo."

"You control our rhythm."

"Lingard."

"Find the spaces."

"Dele."

"Support the front three whenever you can."

Finally his attention settled on the attack.

"Raheem."

"Stretch them."

"Harry."

"Link the play."

He looked directly at Francesco.

"And lead us."

Francesco simply nodded.

"I will."

Southgate then turned the tactics board around.

"This is what Ronald Koeman is sending out."

He began placing the Dutch names into position.

"Jeroen Zoet in goal."

"Patrick van Aanholt."

"Matthijs de Ligt."

"Stefan de Vrij."

"Virgil van Dijk."

"Hans Hateboer."

"Kevin Strootman."

"Georginio Wijnaldum."

"Quincy Promes."

"Memphis Depay."

"Bas Dost."

Several players studied the board carefully.

Southgate continued.

"Van Dijk will organise everything."

"We know how good he is."

Francesco smiled faintly.

He knew that better than most.

"They're strong physically."

"They're comfortable keeping possession."

"And they'll try to draw us out before attacking quickly."

Steve Holland stepped forward.

"Our distances have to stay compact."

"No unnecessary pressing."

"Choose the right moments."

Southgate nodded.

"The first twenty minutes will be about understanding the rhythm."

"Be patient."

"The opportunities will come."

He paused before looking around the room one final time.

"Most importantly…"

"Enjoy representing your country."

The dressing room remained silent.

Those words needed no explanation.

The tunnel steward appeared once again.

"Two minutes."

Players stood together.

Francesco moved toward the front of the line.

Captain.

England.

The responsibility felt enormous.

Yet strangely calming.

Walker stepped alongside him.

"You ready, skip?"

Francesco smiled.

"Let's go."

The tunnel doors opened.

The roar from inside the Johan Cruijff Arena flooded through immediately.

Both teams walked side by side toward the pitch.

Television cameras followed every step.

Children serving as mascots looked around the stadium with wide eyes.

The floodlights illuminated every corner of the magnificent arena.

Francesco exchanged a respectful handshake with Virgil van Dijk before the coin toss.

"Good luck."

"You too."

The captains then joined their teammates.

Moments later, both teams lined up shoulder to shoulder.

The Dutch national anthem came first.

The home supporters sang with enormous pride.

Orange scarves rose throughout the stadium.

When it finished, applause echoed respectfully around the arena.

Then came God Save the Queen.

England's players stood tall.

Francesco sang every word.

So did Kane.

Henderson.

Walker.

Sterling.

Thousands of travelling England supporters joined them from the away section.

For ninety seconds, club football disappeared completely.

There was only England.

The referee checked both assistants before glancing toward the captains.

One whistle.

Kick-off.

The match began.

Exactly as both managers had expected.

Nobody flew recklessly into attack.

Nobody wanted to expose themselves too early.

Instead, both sides spent the opening minutes carefully measuring one another.

England circulated possession patiently through Stones, Gomez and Henderson.

The Netherlands answered with controlled passing of their own.

Wijnaldum and Strootman dictated the Dutch midfield.

Depay drifted intelligently into pockets of space.

Promes stayed wide, testing Walker's positioning.

Bas Dost battled physically with England's central defenders.

The tempo remained steady.

Every challenge carried purpose.

Every pass seemed designed to gather information.

Southgate stood calmly in his technical area.

Across the touchline, Ronald Koeman mirrored him almost exactly.

Both managers watched.

Both waited.

England gradually began finding small spaces between the Dutch midfield.

Lingard drifted intelligently into half-spaces.

Dele linked neatly with Kane.

Sterling repeatedly forced Van Aanholt backwards.

Francesco constantly tested the positioning of De Ligt and De Vrij.

The Dutch defenders communicated well.

But every few minutes another run forced them to think.

Van Dijk barked instructions from the back.

"Stay together."

"Don't step too early."

The first genuine opportunity arrived after twenty-three minutes.

Sterling burst beyond Hateboer before delivering a dangerous low cross toward Kane.

De Vrij intercepted just in time.

Seconds later England attacked again.

This time Lingard shot narrowly wide.

The visitors were growing.

Then, in the twenty-seventh minute, everything came together.

It began with Henderson.

The Liverpool midfielder intercepted a loose Dutch pass before immediately finding Dele Alli between the lines.

One quick touch.

Dele turned smoothly before feeding Harry Kane.

The England captain dropped deep, exactly as Southgate had instructed throughout the week.

Van Dijk stepped forward.

For just a fraction of a second…

Space appeared.

Kane saw it immediately.

Without hesitation he slipped a perfectly weighted first-time pass through the gap.

Francesco had already begun his run.

His timing was flawless.

Level with the last defender.

One touch carried him clear of De Ligt.

Zoet rushed from his line.

The stadium collectively held its breath.

Francesco remained wonderfully composed.

He opened his body before guiding a precise right-footed finish beyond the goalkeeper.

The ball rolled calmly into the bottom corner.

Goal.

England.

The travelling supporters exploded.

The corner of the stadium occupied by England supporters became a sea of white shirts and waving flags.

Francesco spread his arms before pointing immediately toward Kane.

"You saw it!"

Kane sprinted over laughing.

"Exactly like training!"

Walker arrived seconds later.

"I told you to save one!"

Francesco smiled.

"I listened."

The entire England bench rose together applauding.

Southgate allowed himself a brief smile before immediately clapping his hands.

"Focus!"

"Keep going!"

The goal changed little tactically.

The Netherlands responded with greater urgency.

Depay became increasingly influential.

Wijnaldum pushed further forward.

Promes tested Walker repeatedly down the left.

England defended superbly.

Stones won important headers.

Gomez stayed composed.

Pickford made one excellent save from Dost after a dangerous cross.

The contest became fiercer.

Every challenge drew louder reactions from the crowd.

Neither side backed away.

Yet despite the intensity, neither defence made another mistake.

The minutes slipped away.

Thirty-five.

Forty.

Forty-three.

One added minute.

The referee finally raised the whistle.

Half-time.

The Netherlands 0-1 England.

England's players exchanged quick words of encouragement before walking together toward the tunnel.

Inside the dressing room, nobody celebrated.

The scoreline remained too narrow.

Southgate waited until every player had taken a seat.

Then he stepped toward the tactics board once more.

"Good first half."

He looked around the room.

"We've earned that lead."

"But the match is far from over."

Several players nodded while reaching for water bottles.

Southgate pointed toward the tactical board.

"They're beginning to leave more space."

"Wijnaldum is pushing higher."

"Their full-backs are taking greater risks."

He looked directly at the midfielders.

"Hendo."

"Keep controlling the tempo."

"Lingard."

"Dele."

"I want quicker support around Harry and Francesco."

Steve Holland stepped in.

"When we win possession…"

"…play forward earlier."

"The opportunities are there."

Southgate nodded again.

"Most importantly…"

"I want the first twenty minutes of this second half to belong to us."

His voice grew firmer.

"Dominate the ball."

"Dominate the territory."

"And if we play with the same discipline…"

"…more goals will come."

The room remained completely silent.

Every player understood the message.

The job was only half finished.

Then the dressing room remained silent for several seconds after Gareth Southgate finished speaking.

No dramatic speeches.

No pounding on lockers.

No promises about headlines waiting tomorrow morning.

Just clarity.

England had done the difficult part by taking the lead.

Now they had to prove they could control the match.

Southgate looked around the room one final time before clapping his hands together.

"Right."

"Let's finish the job."

The players stood almost as one.

Water bottles were emptied.

Shin pads were adjusted.

A few final stretches loosened tired muscles that had already endured forty-five demanding minutes.

Francesco tightened the captain's armband around his left arm once more before exchanging a glance with Harry Kane.

Kane smiled.

"Same again."

Francesco nodded.

"Only better."

Walker overheard as he walked past.

"I like that plan."

The referee appeared at the dressing-room entrance.

"England."

"Time."

The players formed a line behind their captain.

The familiar tunnel suddenly felt quieter than before.

The adrenaline was still there, but now it was mixed with concentration.

As they emerged back into the Johan Cruijff Arena, another wave of noise rolled down from every stand.

The Dutch supporters hadn't stopped believing.

Far from it.

Their team was only one goal behind.

One good attack could change everything.

Francesco looked briefly towards the section packed with England supporters.

St George's flags continued to wave proudly.

The travelling fans answered every Dutch chant with one of their own.

The referee checked both captains before blowing his whistle.

The second half began.

Immediately, England looked different.

Southgate's instructions were obvious.

Instead of sitting deeper to protect their advantage, England stepped forward together.

Henderson positioned himself almost permanently inside the Dutch half whenever England had possession.

Lingard and Dele Alli moved intelligently between the Dutch midfield and defensive lines, constantly offering passing options.

Most importantly, the front three never allowed the Netherlands to settle.

Francesco drifted across the entire attacking line.

Sometimes he appeared on the left.

Sometimes through the middle.

Occasionally he even dropped into midfield to link play before bursting forward again.

Harry Kane mirrored those movements perfectly.

Whenever Francesco came short, Kane attacked the space behind.

When Kane dropped deep, Francesco sprinted beyond the defence.

Sterling's pace stretched the Dutch back line relentlessly.

Van Aanholt could barely afford to venture forward anymore because Sterling was waiting behind him every time possession changed hands.

Virgil van Dijk barked instructions continuously.

"Stay compact!"

"Watch the runners!"

"Don't get dragged out!"

Even for a defender of his quality, England's movement demanded constant concentration.

Walker charged forward from right-back to support another attack before clipping a pass inside.

Lingard allowed the ball to run cleverly between his legs.

Francesco collected it before spinning away from De Ligt.

Within seconds England were flooding forward again.

Southgate folded his arms.

Exactly what he wanted.

Possession.

Movement.

Patience.

The Netherlands were chasing shadows.

Every successful pass from England was greeted by louder applause from the travelling supporters.

"Olés" even began echoing from one corner of the stadium as England pieced together a sequence of more than twenty uninterrupted passes.

Koeman stepped towards the edge of his technical area.

"Press!"

"Press together!"

But England were moving the ball too quickly.

Henderson switched play effortlessly.

Walker overlapped.

Sterling darted inside.

Lingard appeared in another pocket of space.

It became increasingly difficult for the Dutch midfield to keep up.

Francesco glanced over his shoulder.

He noticed Kane beginning another familiar movement.

The same pattern they had rehearsed repeatedly during three days at Ajax's training ground.

He smiled to himself.

The opportunity was coming.

It arrived in the fifty-eighth minute.

The move began with Pickford calmly rolling possession towards Stones.

Instead of forcing a long ball, England built patiently.

Stones found Henderson.

Henderson turned away from Wijnaldum before sliding possession towards Dele.

One touch.

Another pass.

Walker surged down the right flank.

Sterling dragged Van Aanholt away with an intelligent run inside, opening space for Walker to advance.

The Manchester City full-back delivered a firm pass into Francesco's feet just outside the penalty area.

Immediately, De Ligt stepped forward.

Van Dijk edged across to provide cover.

Exactly as expected.

Francesco resisted the temptation to turn.

Instead, with the outside of his right boot, he produced a perfectly weighted reverse pass between both centre-backs.

Harry Kane had already anticipated it.

The England striker burst into the gap without breaking stride.

One touch.

Then another.

Zoet rushed from his line, desperately trying to narrow the angle.

Kane remained calm.

His finish was clinical.

Low.

Accurate.

Inside the far post.

Goal.

England.

0-2.

The away section erupted again.

Kane wheeled away with both arms spread before pointing immediately towards Francesco.

"What a pass!"

Francesco sprinted across laughing.

"You finished it."

The two embraced before the rest of the squad arrived.

Walker wrapped an arm around both of them.

"There it is."

"Now we're talking."

Lingard grinned.

"We've worked on that all week."

Southgate punched the air once.

Only briefly.

Then his focus immediately returned.

"Reset!"

"Concentrate!"

The players nodded.

There was still over half an hour to play.

Koeman responded immediately from the touchline, urging his side further forward.

The Dutch had little choice now.

Two goals behind in front of their own supporters.

Their attacks became more adventurous.

Depay drifted centrally searching for more possession.

Wijnaldum pushed beyond the midfield line almost every opportunity.

England welcomed the challenge.

More space appeared.

Exactly as Southgate had predicted during half-time.

Francesco nearly added another goal just after the hour mark.

Lingard threaded a delightful pass into his path before Van Dijk recovered magnificently with a perfectly timed sliding challenge.

The two exchanged appreciative nods as they got back to their feet.

Outstanding attacking.

Outstanding defending.

The contest between them had become one of the evening's highlights.

England refused to slow down.

Sterling danced past Hateboer before forcing Zoet into another save.

Moments later Kane's header drifted narrowly over the crossbar.

The pressure continued building.

The Dutch supporters tried desperately to lift their team.

Every successful tackle was cheered.

Every attack was encouraged.

But England looked increasingly comfortable.

In the seventy-first minute, they produced another moment of quality.

It began, once again, with patience.

Henderson recycled possession after another Dutch clearance.

Rather than forcing an immediate attack, England calmly moved the ball from one side of the pitch to the other.

Walker to Stones.

Stones to Henderson.

Henderson across to Rose.

Rose inside to Dele.

Dele found Francesco between the lines.

Francesco held off Strootman before laying the ball into Kane's feet.

Kane immediately spotted Lingard arriving late outside the penalty area.

A short pass rolled perfectly into his path.

"Hit it!"

Walker shouted from the opposite flank.

Lingard didn't need asking twice.

Without taking another touch, he struck through the ball with his right foot.

The effort flew low at first before rising slightly as it arrowed towards the far corner.

Zoet launched himself full stretch.

He never reached it.

The ball crashed into the inside of the side netting.

Goal.

0-3.

Lingard sprinted away punching the air repeatedly before dropping to his knees in celebration.

The England supporters behind the goal erupted once more.

Francesco reached him first.

"What a strike!"

Lingard laughed.

"I've been waiting for one of those."

Kane arrived moments later.

"Worth the wait."

Even Henderson allowed himself a broad smile.

England had been outstanding.

Southgate applauded loudly from the technical area.

The goal perfectly reflected everything England had worked on throughout the week.

Patient possession.

Quick combinations.

Late midfield runners.

Clinical finishing.

Koeman stood with his hands on his hips for a moment before turning towards his bench.

Changes were needed.

Southgate reached the same conclusion.

With fifteen minutes remaining, the fourth official stepped forward holding the electronic substitution board.

The numbers lit up.

Francesco.

Sterling.

Joe Gomez.

Danny Rose.

Off.

Rashford.

Jamie Vardy.

Harry Maguire.

Ashley Young.

On.

The Johan Cruijff Arena applauded respectfully as Francesco walked towards the touchline wearing the captain's armband.

Several England supporters stood to recognise his performance.

He applauded them in return before removing the armband.

Instead of handing it to a teammate at random, he passed it carefully to Jordan Henderson, who would lead England through the closing stages.

Henderson slipped it onto his arm.

"Well played."

"You too," Francesco replied.

Southgate met him near the technical area.

The England manager extended his hand.

"Excellent."

Francesco shook it firmly.

"Thank you."

"You led exactly as I hoped."

Those words meant almost as much as the result itself.

Walker, still on the pitch, pointed towards the bench.

"Don't get too comfortable."

Francesco laughed before taking his seat beside the coaching staff.

Across the field, Ronald Koeman also made changes.

Bas Dost left the pitch to warm applause from the Dutch supporters, replaced by Wout Weghorst.

Quincy Promes made way for Davy Pröpper, adding another body to midfield.

Stefan de Vrij was withdrawn, with Ryan Babel introduced as Koeman reshaped his side in search of something positive during the final quarter of the match.

Fresh legs briefly increased the tempo.

Rashford immediately tested the Dutch defence with his pace.

Vardy chased every loose ball with relentless energy.

Maguire settled comfortably alongside Stones, winning two important aerial duels almost immediately.

Ashley Young added valuable experience down the left.

The Netherlands continued searching for a consolation goal.

Depay curled a free-kick narrowly over the crossbar.

Weghorst forced Pickford into a comfortable save with a header from a corner.

Babel looked lively after coming on, driving inside from the left before seeing Walker recover brilliantly to block his cross.

England, however, never looked rattled.

Their organisation remained excellent.

Every player understood their responsibilities.

Whenever the Dutch tried to build momentum, Henderson slowed the game intelligently.

Kane retained possession.

Rashford carried the ball into open space.

The clock gradually ticked away.

Eighty-two minutes.

Eighty-six.

Ninety.

The fourth official indicated three minutes of added time.

England's supporters began singing again.

"Lions on the shirt…"

The players on the bench joined in by clapping towards the away section.

Francesco sat watching quietly, occasionally shouting encouragement towards his teammates.

"Keep going!"

"Stay switched on!"

There would be no late drama.

No unexpected twist.

England had controlled the evening from start to finish.

When the referee finally blew for full-time, the travelling supporters erupted once more.

Netherlands 0.

England 3.

The England players embraced one another across the pitch.

Kane hugged Lingard.

Walker wrapped an arm around Maguire.

Pickford punched the air before applauding the supporters.

Francesco walked back onto the pitch from the bench to congratulate every teammate individually.

Southgate remained calm as always, shaking hands with Ronald Koeman before applauding his players.

It had only been a friendly.

Everyone knew that.

Yet the performance had been far more important than the label attached to the fixture.

England had gone away from home against one of Europe's strongest footballing nations and produced a disciplined, mature and convincing display.

Three goals.

A clean sheet.

Confidence growing with every match.

As the players walked together towards the England supporters to thank them for their backing, the applause continued to echo around the Johan Cruijff Arena.
