The countdown to the Marquis's arrival felt like a tightening noose. With every passing day, the Zaqor Manor buzzed with a manic, nervous energy. Ralph's training sessions in the main courtyard grew louder, his clumsy Tier 2 light magic splashing flashy, superficial bursts of yellow-white light across the stone targets to the applause of his doting mother, Tere.
But in the pitch-black silence of the midnight hours, Nard's training was of an entirely different nature.
Within the damp, suffocating confines of the servant's passage, Beru had erected a complex barrier of isolating mana. The air was thick, smelling of ozone and damp earth.
"Ralph's Tier 2 consolidation is a joke," Beru said, his deep baritone cutting through the quiet. He stood tall in his human form, his amber eyes reflecting the faint, emerald-white pulse hovering over Nard's chest.
"He has simply gathered ambient light and compressed it into a shallow, single-layer puddle around his heart. It is flashy, but brittle. If a Tier 2 battle mage struck his core, it would shatter like cheap glass."
Nard sat cross-legged on the cold stone, sweat dripping from his chin, his breathing rhythmic. "Then how is my Tier 2 different, Beru?"
"You are not just compressing light, Nard. You are reconstructing the shattered pathways of a genius," Beru explained, stepping closer. "To reach Tier 2, you must force your emerald-white core to split and forge a secondary, outer ring. It must spin in the opposite direction of your primary core, creating a self-sustaining binary system. One side of raw, destructive white light; the other of restorative emerald. It is like forging steel from raw iron and ice. If you lose focus for even a microsecond, the conflicting energies will tear your mana pathways to shreds."
Nard swallowed hard. His pathways were still heavily scarred from the tragic incident of his youth. The mere thought of expanding them felt like dragging shards of glass through his veins. But he looked up at the legendary morpher and nodded. "Do it."
"Good," Beru muttered. He raised a hand, and a wave of golden, heavy pressure descended upon Nard, anchoring him to the floor. "Begin. Push the core to its limits. Force the expansion."
Nard closed his eyes and plunged into his inner world. Near his heart, the dense, emerald-white core pulsed like a miniature sun. With a silent roar of willpower, Nard clamped down on the core and forced it to expand.
Immediately, an agonizing white-hot heat surged outward. Nard's body convulsed. It felt as though his veins were being filled with liquid fire. The dense core resisted, fighting against the expansion, thrumming violently against his fragile pathways.
"Don't back down!" Beru's voice echoed in his mind, sharp and commanding. "Your pathways are scarred, yes, but those scars are your armor. Use them to channel the friction! Separate the white from the emerald!"
Nard ground his teeth so hard he tasted copper. He focused on the wild energy, using his willpower as a scalpel. He peeled away a layer of the pure, destructive white light, pulling it into a wide, sweeping arc around his heart. Simultaneously, he drew a thread of the soothing, cool emerald magic, wrapping it around the white arc to contain its volatility.
The pain was blinding. His skin turned a flushed, feverish red, and faint trails of steam began to rise from his shoulders. His body screamed at him to stop, to let the energy disperse. But the memory of his father's mocking laughter, Tere's venomous smile, and Ralph's arrogant sneers flashed before his eyes.
I am not a hollow shell.
With a final, desperate surge of resolve, Nard forced the two opposing forces to bend. He slammed them together into a perfect circle, forcing the newly formed outer ring to spin.
For a terrifying second, everything went completely silent. Nard's heart seemed to stop.
Then, a profound, resonant hum vibrated through his entire being.
A secondary, dual-layered ring of emerald and white mana snapped into place around his primary core, spinning smoothly and silently. The excruciating pain vanished in an instant, replaced by a cool, rushing wave of absolute, revitalizing power. His senses expanded. He could hear the faint scuttling of insects behind the stone walls; he could feel the subtle flow of the wind outside the narrow high window.
He had done it. He had consolidated a dual-core Tier 2 magic.
"Suppress it! Now!" Beru's sharp command broke Nard's awe.
Nard didn't hesitate. Grabbing hold of the newly expanded power, he dragged it inward, pulling both the primary core and the spinning Tier 2 ring deep into the absolute center of his heart. He clamped down with his suppression, locking the energy behind his dull, pathetic facade.
Within seconds, the emerald-white glow faded. To any outside observer, Nard was once again nothing but a magicless, hollow boy.
Nard collapsed forward, catching himself on his hands, panting heavily. But when he looked up, his eyes were blazing with a sharp, triumphant clarity.
Beru looked down at him, a deep, genuine pride softening his stern features. He reached down, helping Nard to his feet.
"A dual-nature Tier 2 core," Beru whispered, reverting back into the form of the small, scarred bird and landing on his shoulder. "In terms of pure mana density and versatility, you have already eclipsed your stepbrother by a landslide. Ralph plays with sparks, Nard. You are carrying the storm."
Nard stood tall, adjusting his worn tunic. For the first time in years, the heavy weight in his chest didn't feel like a curse. It felt like a promise.
"Let the Marquis come," Nard whispered, a cold, confident smile gracing his lips. "I am ready.
