Chapter 72 - [H:F.S.T.T.S] [071]

[Chapter 71: A New Arena, But The Same Monarch.]

[Alternative Titles: A Different Stage, But The Same Spotlight.

A Controller in One Hand & A Camera in the Other.]

Last Time on Chapter 070 of From Shadows To The Spotlight —

"Don't sweat it," Tall Guy said, waving him off. "I'll cover the rest. Just hook me up next time." He placed a few more bills onto the counter. "Yo, Steve, sign us up."

Steve nodded, punching info into the register. "Name and age?"

"Henry Cavill, seventeen," The tall Guy said, standing a bit taller.

Steve printed the membership card, handed it over with the games, and flashed a grin. "You're all set. Enjoy, guys." As they turned to leave, he called after them, a knowing smile creeping onto his face. "Oh, and one last thing — hire good people in that game, and treat 'em right. Like you'd want to be treated."

Henry glanced back, tossing a quick "Thanks, man!" before he and his friend pushed through the door, the bell jingling behind them. Steve leaned back, still buzzing from the sale, already imagining those two losing their minds when they hit that moment in Dino Dynasty.

Now Continuing —

Henry's bedroom was a geek's paradise, lit by the flickering glow of his 20-inch CRT TV. A No Doubt poster hung crookedly above his bed, and empty Mountain Dew cans cluttered the floor next to a bag of half-eaten Cheetos.

His PlayStation whirred, the disc drive grinding as Jurassic Park: Dino Dynasty booted up. The game's opening hit like a thunderbolt: Morgan Freeman's deep, velvety voice narrating over sweeping shots of Isla Nublar.

"Welcome to a world lost in time,"

Freeman intoned, and Henry's jaw dropped. "Yo, Jake, isn't that Morgan Freeman's voice! Damn they really went all out on this game."

"Yeah, I feel like this one's gonna be worth those 50 bucks!" Jake who was sprawled out on a beanbag, just nodded, eyes glued to the screen, as he watched his friend play.

Henry was hooked, his heart racing as he dove into the park-building mechanic of the game. Steve's hype at Archmon Store echoed in his mind—that grin, swearing Dino Dynasty was a masterpiece.

The man really wasn't bluffing or overselling the game. The game was a beast, packed with features that had Henry and Jake geeking out for hours.

Hours turned into days, as they designed sprawling enclosures, tweaking fence heights and adding moats for just protection but style. Henry obsessed over the incubation lab, where he poured most of his budget into crafting a hybrid dinosaur.

"Check this beast," he had said, punching in the name, "MegaRex." The screen rendered a massive dino with glowing eyes and claws like scythes. "Cost me a fortune, but MegaRex is gonna pull crowds like crazy from all over the world."

Jake snorted, tossing a Dorito chip at him. "Yeah, 'til it eats your tourists. You spent, like, all your budget on that thing."

Jake then whistled, as he thought about his own park. "Dude, you blew your whole budget on that thing. My velociraptors got a sweet jungle vibe—trees, waterfalls, the works." He smirked, nudging Henry. "Bet my park score smokes yours."

"Keep dreaming," Henry shot back, scrolling through the staff management screen. He remembered Steve's weird advice—hire good people, treat 'em right—and took it seriously, hunting for employees with traits like "Honest," "Loyal," and "Kind."

He snagged a "Loyal" vet who was actually voiced by Drew Barrymore, her character looked just like her, with her cute ponytail bouncing whenever she checked on the dino vitals. He also hired a "Kind" tour guide, a Keanu Reeves look-alike with a chill "Whoa, dinosaurs!" line that cracked them up.

The game was stacked with even more celebs—Henry spotted RDJ's voice and looks in a snarky scientist, while Jake had a maintenance guy with Jim Carrey's wild energy, and hints of River Phoenix, Brooke Shields, Brandon Lee, and Johnny Depp in other roles, blowing their mind.

But MegaRex's price tag had hurt his bank. Henry's budget was tapped, and he couldn't afford all the top-tier staff. Grumbling, he had to finally hire a "Dishonest" security guard to save cash, ignoring the game's warning about low morale.

"Guy's cheap, whatever," he had muttered to himself confirming the appointment. He also picked a "Selfish" maintenance worker, her sprite smirking as she slacked off.

"Hope she at least fixes the fences," Henry said, brushing off Jake's concern. To balance it, he had splurged on an "Honest" manager, but his funds were stretched thin, leaving gaps in his dream team.

They dove deeper, customizing every detail. Henry tweaked MegaRex's genome for extra aggression, heightened intellect and even the ability to camouflage itself, gleefully laughing at having created the apex predator of the dinosaur kingdom as it roared on-screen.

Young Cavill even earned an achievement for said feat, something which he still loved bragging about to Jake to this day. The achievement had raised his park's popularity bringing in an even larger crowd of tourists that wished to see the new king of the prehistoric era.

He had used the extra budget to build a neon-lit gift shop selling dinosaur themed merch, upgraded snack stands with "Cretaceous Corn Dogs," and set ticket prices to rake in cash. Jake focused on visitor flow, adding monorails and a petting zoo for baby triceratops.

----------

"This is the best zoo ever, man," Henry said, pride swelling as his park's stats soared—visitor counts spiking, profits climbing. The controller's clicks mixed with the TV's hum, and the room buzzed with their hype. "We're crushing this, dude!"

They argued over enclosure budgets, Jake yelling, "Your Mega T-Rex pen is eating up all your budget man, you got no variety with the big ones!" Henry just laughed in return, adding spotlights for flair.

Hours melted away, as the day soon turned into night, the screen was alive with roaring dinos and cheering crowds. Henry's park was a masterpiece, and he leaned back, smug. "Steve wasn't lying—Monarch really nailed this. My score's gonna be untouchable."

Finally, a pop-up flashed: "Park Complete. Congratulations!"

Henry whooped, tossing his controller onto the bed. "That's it, Jake! My park's a legend—bet I crushed your score." Jake groaned, as his park wasn't completed yet but his grin said that he was stoked too.

The credits rolled, names scrolling over a triumphant dino roar. Henry leaned back on the beanbag, ready to brag, already picturing his name on some online leaderboard.

But then the screen flickered, static crackling. A low, eerie hum buzzed through the speakers, not the victory tune Henry had expected. He squinted, a weird knot forming in his gut. "Yo, is the music supposed to be this creepy or what?" he said, glancing at Jake, who just shrugged.

"What's with this janky crap?" Jake muttered, taking the controller from Henry and tried to bring the main menu but failed no matter how much he mashed the buttons. The hum grew louder, and the screen flickered again, red warning lights began pulsing across the park map.

Henry's pulse quickened, the vibe shifting from chill to wrong. "Maybe it's a secret level," he said, trying to sound pumped, but his voice cracked.

Then it hit like a freight train. Alarms screamed, shrill and relentless, blasting through the TV. The screen snapped from a top down park simulator view to a first-person view, dropping Henry's character into the park—his park, which had now become a nightmare of shattered fences and flickering lights.

A velociraptor's eyes glinted in the dark, claws scraping concrete, its sound way too close for comfort. Henry's stomach dropped, the controller nearly slipping from his sweaty hands. "Dude, this is nuts!" he yelped, heart slamming as he fumbled to move.

Chaos exploded. Dinosaurs roared, their shadows lunging across the screen. A sparking control panel lit up the path, but his "Dishonest" security guard's voice—who was played by Jeff Daniels panicked as he yelled, "Screw this, I'm out!"

A gate slammed shut behind, trapping Henry's character in a dead-end. "No way, you jerk!" Henry shouted, mashing buttons. His "Selfish" maintenance worker appeared, smirking as she ignored a broken fence, letting a raptor slip through. Jake was losing it too, yelling, "Yo! What the hell is this?!"

Henry's mind flashed to Steve's cryptic words at Archmon. 'Wait, is this why he said to hire the right people and treat them right?' His "Loyal" vet, Drew Barrymore's voice, crackled through a radio, as she guided him to a discarded keycard—his one lifeline and his first save point of this new game.

MegaRex's roar shook the screen, his own creation now a monster hunting him and every living thing in the park for he was the apex predator and they were all just prey. His perfect park was now a death trap, every budget cut biting back.

Henry froze, pulse pounding, as the raptor lunged, jaws snapping inches from the screen, ready to tear his world apart as he tried to make his escape. But not all hope was lost, cause despite the chaos and ruin, this place still remained the Jurassic Park that he had poured hundreds of hours in. He knew exactly where the security forces stored their more lethal variety of gear.

The game had only just begun.

----------

The Los Angeles night buzzed outside the tinted windows of Alex's Rolls Royce, the city's neon glow blurring as they cruised towards Studio Monarch HQ. The world outside never slept, but inside the cabin, time slowed to a luxurious hum.

Tasha, Alex's fiercely competent and stunningly poised personal secretary, straddled his lap with practiced intimacy, her elegant figure a silhouette against the muted lighting. Her smooth ebony skin caught the dim glow of the recessed monitor nestled in the Seraph's mahogany-paneled partition.

The supple leather creaked beneath them as she worked her fingers into his scalp, massaging his temples with rhythmic precision, chasing away the tension that clung to him after a whirlwind night.

Alex dressed in his signature outfit, a defiance of Hollywood formality—a fitted black tee and jeans that hugged his tall athletic frame—sank deeper into the plush leather seat. His eyes fluttered shut as the calming scent of jasmine from Tasha's perfume mingled with the clean, high-end aroma of the car's interior: a mixture of cedar polish, leather, and just a hint of petrichor from the fragrance diffuser built discreetly into the armrest.

It had been a month since Jurassic Park: Dino Dynasty dropped, and the world was still spiraling in its wake. Video game critics were losing their minds, fans were creating artwork, mods, conspiracy theories. The cultural takeover was real. Earlier that night, Alex had breezed through an interview on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, promoting Spider-Man: First Swing.

The buzz in the studio was electric, but here, with Tasha's warm hands gliding over his temples, the roar of adoration gave way to something softer. Something grounding.

"Sir, you really shouldn't spill such personal stuff on national TV," Tasha said, her tone both scolding and affectionate as her fingers pressed expertly into a nerve behind his right ear. "It's risky."

Alex groaned, not from annoyance, but from the sheer bliss of her hands moving down to the back of his neck. Her touch was confident and exact—she knew every pressure point. "What're you talking about, Tash?" he mumbled, his voice heavy with relaxation, his eyelids drooping like velvet curtains at the end of a performance.

Wordlessly, she leaned back just enough to reach the monitor controls and tapped the play button with a manicured finger painted deep plum. The high-definition screen sparked to life with a soft chime, the colors sharpening to reveal the Tonight Show set. Jay Leno leaned forward, flashing his signature grin.

"Alex, I've never seen you in a suit," Leno teased, his voice bright. "You've been to red carpets, the golden globe, Oscars, and tons of other events. But never in a suit. I'm not saying you don't look good—I just can't help myself but ask.. why?"

Laughter rolled through the studio audience. Onscreen, the version of Alex sitting opposite Leno wore the same confident smirk that now tugged at the corners of his mouth in real time. "I just hate wearing 'em, Jay," the recording said, his voice as easygoing and casual as ever. "So stuffy, so formal. You'll never catch me in a suit unless it's a funeral, and even then, it's gotta be someone real close."

Tasha paused the playback, freezing the image on Leno's open-mouthed laugh. She slid off his lap with graceful ease, kneeling beside him on the plush carpet, her expression unreadable but her eyes sharp.

"Sir," she said, her voice soft but firm, "you really need to be more careful. That's too much for the world to know."

Alex chuckled, tilting his head to study her. "C'mon, Tash, I was humanizing myself. Audiences eat that up—makes me relatable." He flashed a trademark grin, but her expression didn't budge. He sighed and pivoted. "Alright, alright. Enough about Leno. The Dino Dynasty numbers came in, right? It's been a month—hit me with it. How are we looking?"

Her eyes softened slightly at his shift in tone, but her professionalism returned like a mask sliding back into place. She began easing off his custom leather loafers, setting them aside like precious artifacts. "Would you like me to read it to you, sir?" she asked, already pressing firm, practiced thumbs into the soles of his feet.

"God, yes," Alex exhaled, reclining into the seat as her fingers moved in slow, concentric circles over his arches. "And throw in the projections while you're at it."

Tasha nodded, her dark hair falling slightly over one shoulder. Her hands moved with an almost hypnotic rhythm, alternating between his calves and the pressure points along the arch of his soles. Her voice was calm, modulated, but carried just the right amount of reverence. "Jurassic Park: Dino Dynasty is shaping up to become a cultural phenomenon, sir," She began.

"Just the first-month sales have hit 1.4 million copies in the U.S.—1.2 million on PlayStation, another 200,000 on PC. That puts us ahead of Final Fantasy VII's launch. We are the biggest game this year, though Nintendo's new Zelda game has yet to come out. But our analysts at MIG are hopeful of eking out a win even over Nintendo.

Alex let out a low whistle, his fingers flexing on the armrests.

"Analysts at Monarch are projecting 3 to 3.5 million U.S. sales by year's end, with holiday bundles pushing us past Final Fantasy VII's 1.5 million projection," she continued, shifting seamlessly to knead the muscles along his calves. "Globally, it's harder to pin exact numbers yet, but we're trending toward 9 million, possibly 10, especially if momentum holds in Europe and Asia."

"Damn," Alex murmured, a grin stretching across his face. "Keep going—how's the sales distribution and what's our primary demographic?"

Tasha's nails traced lightly across his scalp, sending shivers down his spine. "California leads in sales, around 450,000 copies—driven by L.A.'s gaming scene and Silicon Valley's tech crowd. New York and Texas are close behind at 250,000 each."

"The primary demographic? It's Fifteen-to-twenty-year-olds, sir. They make up about 40% of the player base. These are the kids from the Archmon Store event—the ones who freaked out over the raptor animatronic. They're flooding AOL message boards and GameFAQs, building hybrid dinos, sharing park layouts, obsessing over tricks to escape different situations, and how to optimize the layout so that survival comes just a little easier.."

Her eyes glimmered with pride as her hands moved up to his shoulders again, thumbs digging into old knots from weeks of interviews and studio sessions. "The broader 13-to-34 age group makes up 70%, and we're seeing strong pickup from both casual and hardcore gamers."

"It's cutting across genre lines—sim heads, horror fans, even younger kids and older gentlemen are being pulled in by the Jurassic Park nostalgia. But what really ties them together is the experience and innovative gameplay."

"They're naming their dinosaurs—competing to see who can create the most deadliest apex predator—and Mr. Freeman's voice narrating made it an instant classic. Ms. Shield's tour guide lines are loved by all."

"The old man's voice just has that gravitas." Alex nodded in causal acceptance.
