Chapter 83 - [H:F.S.T.T.S] [082]

[Chapter 82: A Name That's Worth Betting On.]

[Alternative Titles: Blueprint of a Cultural Revolution.]

Last Time on Chapter 081 of From Shadows To The Spotlight —

"Well, well," Robert said, arms spread wide. "Boss man and Lady Potts, enjoying the sunset without me?"

Monica laughed, stepping back. Alex turned, smirking. "Robert. How was day one living in Stark's shoes?"

"Glorious," Robert declared, dropping into an armchair like a king returning to his throne.

"I can't wait to lean into the Iron Man side. Playboy Tony is fun, but the transformation in his character that I read in the script after he becomes Iron Man? That's gonna be my crown jewel, I can feel it."

Now continuing —

Alex raised a Salut and smiled. "Glad to hear it."

Robert leaned forward, eyes glinting. "Tell me something though — did Spider-Man's opening shock you? Do you think it will really hit a billion dollars?"

"The networks are losing their minds over the numbers you just pulled in September. Last I heard.. the studio execs are scrambling in a panic to study how you did it and replicate your success."

Alex set his glass aside, crossing his arms with a thoughtful hum, no smugness or pride to be seen on his face. "I'll be honest, the opening beat even my best predictions. But I guess that just proves Spider-Man's not just an IP — he's the superhero for an entire generation worldwide."

"With the Fellowship and John Wick I already stress-tested my new international distribution pipeline's capabilities. Right now Spider-Man is dominating domestically, but trust me—" He smiled slowly, a hunter's grin. "—when it starts releasing globally it'll easily swing past a billion dollars."

Robert whistled low in surprise. "Then what about Iron Man? Gimme a number, boss. How high do you think we are going to fly?"

Alex laughed in jest, but his face soon got serious as he replied. "Robert, right now we're filming an origin story. The mission is to win hearts and build the core fanbase — not squeeze every dollar out of them."

"But if we all do our jobs right and execute my vision to a T? At the very least I would wager we'll still make about 500 million dollars worldwide."

Robert whistled again, impressed. Then his grin turned sly. "So, what's next after you wrap up Monica's scenes? Back to counting Spider-Man's millions?"

Alex shook his head. "No. I'm heading off to Japan, actually. There's an animation studio I'm about to buy out. The owner wants a personal meeting. Usually I'd send someone, but he's got real integrity — wants to protect the interests of his team and I respect that."

Robert raised a brow, teasing, "What no toppling governments? Or destabilizing a nation's economy?"

Alex chuckled as a good sport but on the inside he was surprised by how close his friends' words hit home. "No, nothing of the sorts, just plain old business if something interesting doesn't happen to mess up my schedule."

"Honestly, I'd welcome a good surprise. Life's been… predictable lately. Last time I got blindsided was when Fellowship's screens were slashed by rival studio backdoor deals. Even that was fun in hindsight."

Robert threw his hands up. "You sound like you want something to mess it up and what do you mean by something interesting?"

"Nothing much. Just something worthwhile to shift my focus to this new problem or opportunity that I hope comes my way. Something challenging for me to overcome."

"Hmm, that's a clever way to look at things. I'll be taking that, it sounds like something Tony would say after not being challenged enough." Robert replied with an appreciative grin,

"Happy to help." Alex grinned back.

They both laughed — until another knock echoed through the room.

"Come in," Alex called again.

The door opened this time to Donna — poised as ever, her calm steps betraying nothing, but her eyes sparking with a hint of urgency.

She gave Robert a polite nod before turning to Alex. "Sir, Ms. Jin requests a meeting at your earliest convenience. She says she'd like to introduce you to some important people.

"Did she say who these important people would be?" Alex asked with a small hopeful smirk tugging at his lips.

"Yes, sir." She replied as she subtly glanced at Robert as if asking if he was alright with her answering that question in his presence.

"Out with it." Alex replied nonchalantly, as he knew that after saving him from prison and helping restart his career Robert wouldn't betray him that easily.

Especially not when he was the man who could help him take his career to heights the actor couldn't have even imagined before. He just hoped his friend didn't get too greedy and started asking for more than his fair share.

"Ms. Jin said that it was the Director-General of the Cultural Industry Bureau… and a Senior Official from the Film and Video Division." Donna replied smoothly as if she was talking about the weather.

Alex felt the smile pulling at the corner of his mouth — the thrill of the unexpected blooming behind his eyes.

"Interesting," he murmured, lifting his glass one last time to Monica and Robert.

Robert's eyes widened in surprise, as he muttered under his breath. "May you live in interesting times, my friend."

"Looks like boredom will have to wait." Alex said, grinning back at him.

He then turned back to Donna and said, "Prepare Room 9 at the White Lotus and tell the chefs to prepare an excellent full course Korean supper for our special guests."

Outside, the ocean roared, as if applauding the king who never stopped chasing storms.

--------

~One Month Ago~

The polished mahogany table stretched nearly the length of the windowless conference room, its glossy surface reflecting the tense faces of the men seated around it.

Cigarette smoke drifted lazily toward the ceiling, the stale scent lingering despite the clatter of ceiling fans spinning on low.

A single framed plaque on the wall — Cultural Industry Bureau, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Republic of Korea — reminded everyone that they were here to shape a new future, not just breathe on stale air.

Deputy Director Park Jae-Hyun tapped the pad of his fountain pen on his notepad, eyes flicking to the clock mounted near the door. 11:17 a.m.

They had been at this for nearly two hours now — and for most of it, he had listened in thinly-veiled disappointment.

"Next," the man at the head of the table barked, voice tired but commanding. Almost done with this tirade, but still hopeful that one of his subordinates will name someone worthy of being called in.

An older gentleman, glasses perched precariously on his nose, cleared his throat and stood up, pushing back his creaky chair. He shuffled to the front, adjusted his tie, and faced the room of officials.

"I propose that we reach out to Mr. Richard Chamberlain," he said directly without any flowery words in his speech, and while it was a breath of fresh air.

The way his voice quivered with forced conviction told him all he needed to know. "He is an accomplished director of several historical miniseries in the West, with a style quite adaptable to our traditional dramas. He—"

Park had already tuned him out halfway through. 'Chamberlain? He might have been a household name in television circles a decade ago, but he had neither the modern edge nor the reach to pull Korea forward into the new century.'

'Pathetic,' Park thought, eyes drifting to the condensation on his half-empty water glass.

The next man up — a sharp-suited, younger assistant deputy — delivered his pitch with more flair and confidence: "Esteemed colleagues, my candidate is Mr. Jean-Pierre Montclair. He's an award-winning French cinematographer, and his visual aesthetics are praised from Cannes to Berlin. Imagine how our local films would benefit from his artistry—"

Park exhaled slowly, fighting the urge to roll his eyes. Another narrow-minded pick: a master of style, but clueless about the scale and marketing machine that goes on behind blockbusters that dominate the international film markets. Korea needed more than pretty frames; it needed a revolution.

The third speaker, a wiry man with a nose for gossip and ass-kissing, swaggered up to the front. "Gentlemen, I put forward Mr. Thomas Welker. A former executive producer for a major American network. He's known for pushing edgy TV dramas and boosting ratings. He understands youth culture—"

Youth culture? Park bit back a sardonic chuckle. That man knows how to spin scandal, not how to build an empire.

As Welker's enthusiastic defender returned to his seat to a polite, uninspired applause, Park felt his pulse steady. Enough.

When the chair's eyes met his, Park set down his pen, rose smoothly, and buttoned his dark suit jacket. His leather shoes made a soft, resolute click as he strode to the front of the room.

"Deputy Director Park, who will you be recommending?" The chair prompted leaning forward with anticipation.

Park inclined his head in a short bow. He looked over the men—some seasoned bureaucrats, some fresh faces barely out of prestigious universities, and raised his chin proudly for he knew he would succeed.

"Gentlemen," he began, voice calm but ringing clear in the crowded room tasked with raising the Korean entertainment industry. "With all due respect," though to be honest he didn't hold any for these fools. "The names you have heard so far are fine choices — for polite exchange programs or a lecture circuit at best."

"But if we truly wish to close the gap between ourselves and Hollywood, if we want our Korean culture to be appreciated by the world. We need someone who has done what no textbook can teach: build an empire from the dirt.. from the scratch."

He clicked the remote in his hand. The small screen behind him flickered to life, revealing a grainy photograph of a tall, broad-shouldered young man on a bustling film set, sleeves rolled up, talking with his crew with a giant sci-fi set behind him.

"This man," Park said, gesturing to the photo, "is Alex Masters."

A soft ripple of murmurs danced across the room. Even the chair leaned forward, eyebrows lifting in mild surprise.

"It is rumoured," Park continued, "that he started in this industry as a teenager. A nobody on studio backlots. He has worked as a runner. A light boy. A prop handler. Over the years, he learned every job worth learning."

"By the time he was twenty-three, he had already supervised major effects teams. By his late twenties, he had directed the second unit of Phantom Menace, a summer blockbuster. And then—"

He clicked again: a bold image of the Studio MONARCH logo, and under it a montage of four stills: Jurassic Park, Star Wars: Phantom Menace, The Fellowship of the Ring and John Wick.

"—he founded Studio MONARCH in 1988. A studio which, in just a decade, has grown to stand shoulder to shoulder with the Big Six studios in Hollywood. Recently, he has acquired Lucasfilm's distribution pipeline."

"This is not a man who simply directs pretty art films. This is a man who understands how to build a distribution pipeline, a loyal fanbase, and an exportable product — this is exactly what we need to achieve our dream of laying the foundation of the Korean Entertainment export."

Park paused to let it sink in. He read the room. Skepticism mixed with begrudging awe.

One of the senior officials spoke up directly without bothering to raise his hand. "Director Park, Alex Masters isn't really an unknown figure. But how would he treat our culture, wouldn't he just westernize our stories and present it as his own to the world?"

"How can we trust a white man to not take advantage of us?" He said at the end showing his distrust and bias towards foreigners.

Park let out a sigh, which soon turned into a polite yet fake smile. "You say that you know of him as well, but it seems you've heard of the surface level information that most people treat as gossip."

"What isn't known to the general public is that Alex is a man who respects art, culture, and the power stories hold in them to shape individuals. He has deep ties with Japan's animation studios, and even owns some of them, using them to raise the bar of animation."

He has personally championed anime and manga in the American entertainment market. But he did not do this for profit alone — but because he admired their craft and people who made them."

"The animation studios owned by the monarch are the most sought after studios that animators young and old want to join because of how well they treat their staff."

"If he was smart enough to do so while making a hefty sum at the same time, then I believe it only speaks to his cunning and business savvy approach."

A junior official raised his hand. "Deputy Director Park... even if he is all you say, why would such a titan care about us? Our domestic box office is small potatoes to a man who just broke records with Fellowship and has Spider-Man lined up."

Park allowed himself a thin smile. He clasped his hands behind his back, moving closer to the table, voice lowering into quiet certainty.

"You are right — Alex Masters is not a man you tempt with mere money. But he is a man who loves stories, especially those from different cultures, because they hold a different perspective."

"In a recent interview, he said that one of his favourite stories till date is from a Japanese manga called Berserk. He had vehemently advised against reading it until one is in their late 20s and well adjusted as it really messes with one's mind."

"That one interview tripled the sales of the manga the very next day when the interview was printed. It is believed he did so because despite being one of the better stories, it wasn't selling well due to its niche."

"He has personally championed various causes to improve the working conditions of manga creators and artists so that more people would go into the field. He believes everyone has a story to tell, good or bad and he wants those stories to see the light of day."

"And I believe he won't find stories like we make them anywhere else, all we have to do is to give him an offer so good he'd be crazy to turn it down.

He glanced at each face, driving it home.

"And I have already secured a bridge to reach him."

The chair stiffened. "A bridge?"

Park nodded once, his tone casual yet iron-clad. "Ms. Lee Boo-Jin, of the Samsung Group. She is a close acquaintance and friend of Mr. Masters. She trusts him, as he had helped her and her siblings with investing in American companies."

"He trusts her as well, a sign of which can be seen by how much he invested into Samsung after the crisis causing it to remain stable despite their manufacturing department taking a big hit."

"She has agreed to introduce me to the man, and if we play our cards right, even vouch for us."

Gasps and murmurs burst out this time. Even the most skeptical leaned back, wide-eyed.

"Ms. Boo-Jin? From Samsung?" A woman in the back asked, her tone clearly envious.

"Yes." Park did not hide his pride. "She understands that Korea cannot remain a passive consumer of foreign entertainment forever and hopes for Samsung to dip its toes into the entertainment industry and shape our culture."

"She wants to see our films and music become household names worldwide — and so does Mr. Masters. Gentlemen, we have a chance to enlist the mind who cracked open Hollywood itself, and who respects Asian culture enough to guide us without trampling our roots."

The room fell silent. Then the chair slapped the table so hard that a few teacups rattled.

"Deputy Director Park!" he barked, a big grin splitting his weathered face. "Brilliant initiative to reach out to Ms. JIn. You have my approval. I hope your colleague will learn from your example. Make this happen — and if you succeed, expect a bigger office and more stripes on your shoulder."

A round of laughter and scattered claps followed, celebrating Mr. Park's proposal.

Mr. Park dipped his head in thanks, masking the flood of satisfaction warming his chest. Alex Masters, he thought as he returned to his seat, 'I do not know if you will accept our hand — but if you do, you may well shape Korea's tomorrow.'

And as the room buzzed with excitement and fresh plans, Park Jae-Hyun allowed himself one quiet, rare smile — the smile of a man who knew he had just opened the doors to something truly monumental.
