Chapter 193 - New Year, New Goals

The first morning of the new year arrived quietly over Tokyo, painting the city in pale shades of winter blue. Snow from the previous night still clung to rooftops and tree branches, turning the streets into a calm and reflective landscape. The usually crowded city seemed softer, almost as if it too was pausing to welcome the beginning of something new.

Haruto stood near the balcony window of his small apartment, his hands wrapped around a warm cup of tea. The steam rose gently into the cold air as he looked out at the skyline.

It was the first sunrise of the year.

For a long moment, he simply watched the light slowly creep across the horizon, brushing the buildings with gold.

New Year always carried a strange feeling—part hope, part reflection. It was a quiet reminder that time never stopped moving forward.

Behind him, the soft rustle of fabric broke the silence.

"Are you watching the sunrise again?"

Haruto turned to see Aiko stepping into the room, still half-wrapped in a warm sweater. Her hair fell loosely over her shoulders, slightly messy from sleep, yet her eyes carried that same gentle warmth he had grown familiar with over the years.

"I didn't want to miss it," Haruto replied. "The first sunrise of the year feels important somehow."

Aiko walked over beside him and looked out at the sky. The golden light had begun spreading wider now, slowly melting the gray of early morning.

"It's beautiful," she murmured.

For a moment they stood side by side, quietly sharing the view.

Then Aiko stretched her arms lightly and smiled.

"Ready to go?"

Haruto blinked. "Already?"

"You promised we'd visit the shrine this morning," she reminded him.

He chuckled softly. "Right… the New Year visit."

Every year, people across Japan visited shrines during the first days of January to pray for luck and success in the coming year. The tradition had followed Haruto and Aiko through childhood and into adulthood.

Some things never changed.

And maybe that was comforting.

The shrine sat on a quiet hill not far from the university district. When they arrived, the path leading up to it was already lined with visitors. Lanterns glowed softly along the stone walkway, and the cold air carried the faint scent of incense.

Snow crunched under their shoes as they climbed the steps.

Aiko held her scarf closer around her neck. "It's colder than last year."

Haruto nodded. "Tokyo winters can be unpredictable."

When they reached the shrine entrance, the familiar red torii gate stood tall against the pale sky. Beyond it, people approached the main shrine one by one, tossing coins into the offering box before bowing and making their wishes.

Aiko stepped forward first.

She tossed a small coin into the box and closed her eyes gently.

Her hands pressed together in quiet prayer.

Haruto waited beside her, watching the peaceful expression on her face. Even after all these years, moments like this reminded him of the small girl who once stood beneath the cherry blossom tree making innocent wishes.

When Aiko finished, she stepped aside and smiled at him.

"Your turn."

Haruto moved forward and repeated the ritual. The metallic sound of his coin echoed softly in the wooden box.

He bowed his head and closed his eyes.

For a moment, his mind filled with thoughts of the year ahead.

The astronomy program.

The research he hoped to pursue.

The dreams he had been chasing for so long.

And beside all of those thoughts… was Aiko.

He opened his eyes slowly and stepped back.

"So?" Aiko asked playfully. "Did you make a big wish?"

"Maybe," Haruto replied.

She tilted her head. "Are you going to tell me?"

"That would ruin it."

Aiko laughed quietly. "Fair enough."

They walked along the shrine grounds afterward, where small stalls sold warm snacks and traditional charms for good fortune. The cheerful chatter of visitors mixed with the distant ringing of shrine bells.

At one stall, Aiko stopped and examined a collection of wooden ema plaques—small boards where visitors could write wishes and hang them near the shrine.

"Let's write one," she suggested.

Haruto raised an eyebrow. "Isn't the prayer enough?"

"Extra luck never hurts."

He couldn't argue with that.

They each took a small wooden plaque and borrowed a marker from the vendor. Aiko crouched beside a wooden stand and began writing carefully.

Haruto watched her for a moment before turning to his own plaque.

The marker hovered in his hand as he thought about what to write.

Finally, he began.

Work harder.

Chase the stars.

Don't give up.

When he finished, he glanced toward Aiko.

"What did you write?" he asked.

She quickly covered the plaque with her sleeve. "It's a secret."

"That's unfair."

"You didn't show me yours either."

He smiled slightly. "Point taken."

Together they tied the plaques among dozens of others hanging beneath the shrine roof. The small wooden boards swayed gently in the winter breeze.

Aiko stepped back and looked at them thoughtfully.

"It's strange," she said. "Every year feels like turning a new page."

Haruto nodded.

"But the story keeps going," he added.

She looked at him, her eyes bright.

"Exactly."

Later, as they began walking back down the hill, the winter sun had risen fully, casting warm light over the snowy streets below.

The city looked alive again.

People moved through the roads, shops opened their doors, and the distant sound of train bells echoed through the air.

Aiko walked beside him, her hands tucked into her coat pockets.

"So," she said suddenly, "what are your goals this year?"

Haruto considered the question carefully.

"I want to get accepted into the research program at the observatory," he said.

Aiko smiled immediately. "You will."

He laughed softly. "That confident?"

"Of course. You've been preparing for it forever."

"And you?" he asked.

Aiko looked ahead toward the horizon.

"I want to hold my own art exhibition someday," she said quietly. "Not just small displays… a real gallery."

Haruto nodded.

"That sounds like you."

"Like me?"

"Ambitious, but beautiful."

She laughed at the description.

The two of them continued walking down the snowy path together, their footsteps leaving quiet marks in the white ground behind them.

A new year had begun.

New dreams waited ahead.

And though the future was uncertain, one thing remained clear.

They would continue walking toward it—side by side.
