Chapter 6 - Chapter 6 The Tri-Fold Flame

The surge of raw Yang hit Yue like an avalanche of molten silver.

Her breath caught, a sharp, choked gasp tearing from her throat. For a Guardian raised on centuries-old ice mantras, the sheer, untamed heat of Ye Chen's core was an assault. It wasn't just heat—it was alive, unyielding, and ravenous.

Her violet eyes dilated, pinning onto his. Her porcelain skin flushed a feverish pink from collarbone to earlobes.

"You fool..." Yue grit her teeth, her knuckles turning white as she fought to keep her feet beneath her. "Control... your intent! It's invading my spirit sea!"

"I told you," Ye Chen rasped, the veins along his neck glowing a fierce, translucent gold. "I don't weave it. You do."

He refused to pull back. Instead, he drove his other arm around Xiao Mei's limp waist, dragging her cold body flush against his chest.

*Three heartbeats. One circuit.*

Yue's instinct screamed to sever the link, to purge this insolent mortal from her meridians before his primordial Yang corrupted her lifelong cultivation. But then she looked at Xiao Mei.

The girl's lips had gone black. Her pulse was a dying ember.

"Damn you," Yue hissed under her breath.

With her free hand, she snapped the seal off the jade vial using her thumb. A solitary drop of Moon-Lotus Dew floated into the air, radiating an aura of pale, shimmering frost. Yue blew softly across the droplet.

"Guide your flame behind mine!" Yue commanded, her melodic voice strained to its absolute limit. "Follow my Qi, Ye Chen! One stray spark and you incinerate her lungs!"

Ye Chen locked his jaw. He closed his eyes, surrendering to the terrifying pull of Yue's refined energy.

Her Yin was nothing like Xiao Mei's wild, desperate warmth. Yue's Qi was a subterranean glacier—immense, ancient, and cuttingly sharp. Where it met his Yang, friction sparked like flint on iron.

Yet, as their energies collided, the jade embedded in Ye Chen's ribs hummed an ancient tone. The jagged edges smoothed. The fire and ice suddenly wound around each other like two dragons in flight, spiraling down Ye Chen's arm and into Xiao Mei's paralyzed chest.

The drop of Moon-Lotus Dew sank straight into the center of Xiao Mei's sternum.

Xiao Mei's back arched violently. A soundless scream tore from her lips.

Under the skin of her throat and wrists, the corrupted indigo poison met the advancing golden-silver wave. A terrible, hissing sound echoed in the clearing—the sound of flesh and venom boiling away. Black mist erupted through the pores of her forearms, vanishing into the damp mountain air with the stench of scorched bile.

Color returned to Xiao Mei's cheeks in a violent rush.

She gasped, drawing in a ragged, desperate lungful of air, her eyes snapping open. But before she could comprehend her survival, she saw Ye Chen's hand locked tightly in Yue's.

She saw the flush on Yue's neck, the intimate resonance of gold and silver light bleeding between their palms, and the way their breath rose in the exact same cadence.

A sharp pang, colder than any poison, flashed through Xiao Mei's dark eyes. Even weak and shaking, her hand reached out, clawing at Ye Chen's chest.

"Let go of her," Xiao Mei rasped, her voice thick with raw possessiveness. "Ye Chen... break the link!"

Yue's gaze flickered to the recovering girl, a cold, mocking superiority returning to her violet eyes despite the sweat beading along her hairline. "Ungrateful creature. I just saved your life."

"You want his core," Xiao Mei spat, her teeth bared. "Get away from him!"

"Enough, both of you!" Elder Li's harsh bark shattered the tension.

The old man stood at the edge of the clearing, his ironwood pipe held horizontally like a drawn short-sword. His amber eyes were fixed entirely on the treeline behind them.

"The banquet's over," the elder growled. "The viper didn't come with his pups. He brought the executioner."

A heavy silence smothered the forest.

The mountain rain seemed to stop mid-air. The sound of rustling bamboo, the rush of the distant river—everything went dead.

Fifty paces away, the canopy didn't part. It dissolved.

Black miasma rolled across the damp soil like thick ink, withering the moss and killing the ferns in a steady, expanding ring. Through the rotting brush walked a tall man clad in obsidian lamellar armor. A silver viper mask concealed his face, leaving only two slit-pupiled, amber eyes visible.

In his right hand, he dragged a two-handed jagged executioner's blade. The edge left a smoking trench in the wet earth behind him.

"Impressive," the masked man spoke. His voice sounded like dry bones grinding together underfoot. "To think the fugitive core would bloom so early. And in the arms of the Gate Guardian no less."

Yue's expression hardened into pure frost. She tried to pull her hand from Ye Chen's grasp, but the resonance had rooted their energies together. "Commander Feng."

"The Sector Commander himself..." Elder Li spat onto the dirt, his weathered knuckles white on his pipe. "They emptied the main camp for you, boy."

Commander Feng didn't look at the elder. His serpentine gaze fixed squarely on Ye Chen, then slowly drifted down to Xiao Mei, and finally to their locked hands with Yue.

"A dual cultivator who cannot sever his own circuit," Feng said, lifting the massive black blade with one effortless motion. The steel screamed as pure, corrupted Yang fire burst along the fuller. "You are not a warrior, boy. You are a walking furnace ripe for harvesting."

Feng took a single step forward. The ground beneath his iron boot shattered.

"Give me the core," the commander whispered, the air around him twisting into a vortex of killing intent. "Or I will sever the arms of both your women before I carve it from your ribs."
