Chapter 145 - 150. The Report in the Dark

Chapter 150: The Report in the Dark

The Edelmere did not release its victims gently. Even at its very edge, where the primordial trees gave way to rocky foothills and scrubland, the air still held a charge of latent menace. The perpetual green gloom thinned to a dirty twilight, but the silence remained, a listening, hungry silence.

Menato moved through the last of the undergrowth not with his earlier predatory grace, but with a stiff, pained deliberation. The burns on his forearms, blackened and etched with the ghost-scars of ruined Tier Two runes, throbbed with a deep, persistent ache. His left shoulder, where the girl's desperate fire-lance had struck, was a tightly bound mass of numb flesh and healing salve beneath his tunic. Each breath tasted of ozone, burnt fur, and failure.

He broke the tree line.

A simple, unmarked black carriage waited on the worn dirt track that passed for a road. It was drawn by two horses so still and dark they seemed carved from shadow. No driver sat atop the bench. The air around the carriage was utterly still, as if even the wind dared not approach.

Menato didn't hesitate. He walked to the carriage door, wincing slightly as the motion tugged at his shoulder, and opened it. The interior was pitch black, a darkness so complete it seemed to swallow the fading twilight. He stepped inside and pulled the door shut behind him.

The outside world vanished. There was no sound of the forest, no creak of the carriage. Only a profound, velvety silence and the scent of old parchment, cold stone, and something faintly metallic.

He sat on the plush, unseen seat opposite the source of the darkness.

"Report." The voice was androgynous, soft, yet it vibrated in the small space with an undercurrent of immense, restrained power. It came from the shapeless gloom facing him.

Menato straightened his back, ignoring the protest from his injuries. He was a Magic Hunter of sort. Even in disgrace, protocol was marrow-deep.

"The retrieval mission for the Philosopher's Stone was a failure," he began, his voice flat, clinical. "The artifact is lost. It was not taken by a rival faction. It was consumed."

A ripple, subtle as a shift in gravity, passed through the darkness. "Consumed. Explain."

"The agent the Duchess of Korka sent was not a standard adventurer. He possesses no mana. He wields a form of… void energy. It is anathema to structured magic. Resilient, adaptive, and deeply personal. He engaged me in the central chamber of Fort Defal. While outmatched, he executed a high-risk maneuver, stealing the Stone and absorbing its energy directly during combat."

"He survived assimilation?" The voice held a flicker of genuine curiosity now.

"Not only survived. He thrived. The energy merged with his void-core. His physical capabilities increased mid-fight. He developed a crude but effective personal combat style. I engaged him at Tier Two to conclude the matter." Menato's jaw tightened. "He wounded me. Superficially, but he wounded me. Then the Black Lion announced its presence."

This time, the silence from the darkness was longer, heavier. "The Guardian of the Deep Edelmere stirred?"

"A territorial roar. A warning. It forced a… cessation." Menato chose the word carefully, avoiding 'retreat'. "The anomaly and his companions were beneath its notice. As was I."

"Companions." The word was a prompt, sharp as a needle.

"The twins," Menato said, a trace of disdain finally coloring his tone. "The City Lord of Torak's get. The girl has some minor elemental talent, fire, uncontrolled. The boy is a blunt instrument with a title. They were with him."

A low, soundless hum seemed to fill the carriage. It was the sound of calculation. "The Duchess sent the City Lord's own children on a black operation to retrieve an imperial relic. How… delightfully brazen. Or desperate. The King in his marble palace thinks he's playing a game of spies and shadows. He has no idea the pieces he's moving are already on our board."

Menato waited. The politics of the surface kingdoms were a frivolous game, but one his masters played with deadly seriousness.

"This Ki user," the voice mused. "An unknown variable. A hole in the tapestry of magic. He is more valuable than the Stone ever was. The Stone was a tool. He is a question. And questions must be answered."

"He is resilient. And now empowered," Menato stated. "His potential for disruption is high."

"Disruption can be useful. If channeled." The darkness seemed to lean forward. "The Empire's eyes are opening wider, Menato. The Envoy approaches. The pretenses of the past generation are becoming… inconvenient. The Princess thinks her little disguise, playing the wandering Duchess, throws scent from the trail. She forgets. Detalia blood may be diluted, but it never forgets its own. We have ears in her court. Eyes in her shadows. Her belief that she operates in secrecy is her greatest weakness."

Menato understood. The "Duchess Helena" was the lost Princess of the shattered Detalia line, hiding in plain sight, gathering strength and relics. His masters had known for years. They watched. They waited. They harvested the information her efforts uncovered.

"The Envoy will be interested in this 'Kaizen,'" the voice continued. "A man who eats legends and fights with emptiness. Prepare a full transcript of your sensor-readings during the engagement. Every energy spike, every void-signature. The Envoy will wish to dissect it."

"Understood." Menato's injuries pulsed in time with his heartbeat. A reminder. "And the twins? The City Lord's involvement?"

"Leave them. They are messengers now, whether they know it or not. Let them return to their father and their disguised Princess. Let them whisper of a beastkin hunter, of a stolen Stone, of a man who glows with strange power. It will stir the pot. Fear and confusion are excellent fertilizers for our plans." The voice held a final, dismissive note. "Go to the safehouse in Korka's lower district. Heal. Await the Envoy's arrival. You are dismissed from the Stone operation. Your new assignment is observation. Watch the Ki user. Do not engage unless ordered. We must understand what he is before we decide what to do with him."

The dismissal was clear. The failure was acknowledged but superseded by a greater priority.

Menato bowed his head, a gesture lost in the dark. "By your will."

He opened the carriage door. The muted twilight of the outside world felt blinding and insubstantial. He stepped out, and the door shut silently behind him. Before he could take three steps, the black horses stirred for the first time, turning the carriage with an uncanny silence, and moved down the road, dissolving into the gathering dusk as if they had never been.

Menato stood alone on the empty track, the vast, brooding wall of the Edelmere at his back. He looked down at his burned arms, then clenched his good fist.

Kaizen.

The name was no longer just a target. It was a datum. A subject of study. A variable in an ancient, resurgent equation.

He turned and began walking north, towards the distant, smoke-stained silhouette of Korka, where shadows held secrets and an Envoy from a fallen Empire waited to meet a man who was made of void.
