Chapter 141 - The Demonstration Begins

The low hum of voices, the soft clink of glasses, and the occasional whirr of machinery filled the spacious event hall at Empire State University. Bright lights highlighted the centerpiece—the fusion reactor, gleaming like a caged sun, ready to be unveiled to the world. It was Vee Octavius' greatest work, and today was the day everyone would see it.

Gwen Stacy adjusted the cuff of her blazer, trying to appear composed, but her stomach was a knot of anxiety.

The success from the private test run still lingered in her mind, but so did the conversation with Wanda afterward—the one where they agreed to destroy the arms after this demonstration.

The arms were growing stronger, and Vee was losing herself.

Today was supposed to be a celebration, but to Gwen, it felt like a farewell.

Wanda Maximoff entered the hall with effortless confidence, wearing a sleek crimson dress that drew the attention of several investors the moment she stepped in. She cut through the crowd like a queen inspecting her kingdom, but her eyes flicked straight to Gwen—checking in—before moving to Natasha and Talia, who were already in position, watching for trouble.

Fracture slithered under Wanda's skin, the symbiote's tendrils barely visible beneath the surface of her arm.

Its voice was there, always there.

**"The arms grow restless. Their master does not know she is their servant."**

Wanda didn't respond aloud but gave the subtlest nod. Today was the end of those arms.

A sharp click of heels announced Mary Jane Watson's arrival, her arm looped tightly around Harry Osborn's.

She was a vision in a fitted emerald dress, her red hair styled perfectly, and the kind of presence that made sure cameras would find her.

"Oh good, the nerds haven't blown themselves up yet," MJ said loudly as she glanced around, earning a groan from Peter Parker, who was adjusting a monitor display nearby.

"MJ, we literally just got here. Can you give it five minutes?" Peter muttered.

"Nope."

MJ's eyes locked onto Gwen's outfit—smart, professional, but still casual compared to the socialite crowd.

"Oh no. Babe. Gwen. We talked about this. You're dating a billionaire. Why do you still look like you shop at the clearance rack?"

Gwen blushed instantly. "It's not that bad—"

MJ waved her hand dismissively.

"Babe, no. You're with Wanda Maximoff. Sokovia's tax revenue is her personal bank account now. I'm saying—elevate."

Wanda smirked as she joined them.

"You heard the lady," Wanda said smoothly, wrapping an arm around Gwen's waist. "Shopping after this?"

Gwen's face flushed pink.

"I—yeah. Okay."

MJ clapped her hands in delight.

"Yes! Finally! You're learning, babe. Get the bag. I'm so proud."

She beamed at Harry, who was already checking his watch.

"See? My best friend's becoming a gold digger, just like me."

Harry sighed but smiled. "Whatever makes you happy."

Near the reactor, Dr. Octavia "Vee" Octavius stood with her husband, Otto, reviewing her final notes before the presentation.

Vee's mechanical arms shifted slowly around her, adjusting cables without her needing to give any direct commands.

To most of the room, it looked like seamless precision.

But Wanda and Gwen noticed what the others couldn't—the arms were moving too much, even when Vee wasn't focused on them.

Otto kissed her temple.

"You've got this."

Vee smiled, but Gwen could see the strain beneath it.

Gwen leaned toward Wanda, keeping her voice low.

"She's not controlling them anymore, is she?"

Wanda's gaze hardened.

"No. They're controlling her. After this demonstration, those arms are gone."

Gwen nodded.

It was the only way.

The lights dimmed slightly, and a soft murmur passed over the crowd as the event formally began.

University officials welcomed guests, highlighting the potential of the fusion reactor to revolutionize energy across the globe.

When Vee took the stage, she looked every bit the visionary scientist, but Gwen saw the tension in her jaw—the arms coiled around her back like a predator waiting to strike.

"Today, we stand on the edge of a new era," Vee began, her voice steady but firm.

"This reactor isn't just power. It's possibility. It's freedom. It's the future."

Otto stood proudly in the front row, beaming up at her.

MJ, meanwhile, leaned toward Gwen.

"Okay, she's good. But if she melts my jewelry with this thing, I'm invoicing someone."

Peter whispered to Harry.

"I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think MJ's scarier than the reactor."

Harry snorted. "You're not wrong!"

As the reactor powered up, the core glowed softly—beautiful, but dangerous.

The room hushed, awe filling the air.

As Wanda surveyed the hall, her gaze briefly swept across her team, taking in Natasha and Talia positioned near the exits, their eyes sharp and alert.

Jean Grey and Storm lingered nearby, blending into the crowd of investors, but their presence was no less imposing.

Jean's eyes occasionally flashed with faint psychic energy, subtly scanning the area for threats, while Storm's tall, elegant figure gave off a quiet authority, her silver hair catching the light like a beacon.

They were ready—silent sentinels, each a force of nature in their own right.

If anything went wrong today, L.U.S.H. would be prepared.

Fracture whispered into Wanda's mind.

**"Do you feel it? The shadow's hand is here. Death lingers."**

Wanda's eyes narrowed. She felt it too. Something was coming.

Unseen by the crowd, several masked mercenaries moved into position, their weapons concealed under jackets, their eyes locked on the fusion reactor.

Their orders were clear:

Steal the blueprints. Destroy the reactor if necessary. Leave no witnesses if they resisted.

They didn't know it yet, but their lives were about to become very short.

Because they weren't just facing a scientist's team today.

They were walking into a den of lions.

Vee completed her speech, the reactor humming steadily behind her, a symbol of progress, hope—and impending disaster.

Otto clapped the loudest.

MJ sipped champagne, muttering something about needing better photographers.

Peter took notes, oblivious.

But Gwen and Wanda only saw one thing:

The arms.

Moving. Watching. Tightening.

Fracture's final whisper came softly into Wanda's ear: **"The blade is already falling. They do not see it. But you do."**
