Wang Lian came over, bringing a few pairs of handmade cloth shoes and a large bag of freshly picked eggplants from her home garden.
"Here, Sister Liu, try these on and see if they fit,"
Wang Lian said, squatting down in front of Liu Yumei with a green embroidered shoe, preparing to help her take off her shoes.
Liu Yumei put down her teacup, bent over, and grabbed Wang Lian's wrist:
"Could you go to the kitchen and bring me a thermos? My water's gone cold."
"Alright."
When Wang Lian returned with the thermos, Liu Yumei had already changed into the new shoes.
The shoes weren't particularly delicate, but the stitching was solid, and although the embroidery wasn't very lively, it was clear that a lot of thought had gone into them.
"Not bad, they fit well and are comfortable."
Wang Lian said, "That's good. I also made a pair each for Ting Hou and Li Hou, but none for the kids; young people nowadays don't like wearing cloth shoes."
