Hero Killer
Chapter 6: The Heart of the Abyss
---
A Dark Alliance
Jin-Woo's footsteps echoed through the narrow alleyways of the city, the shadows around him dancing as if alive, attuned to his every thought. His body felt heavier after the trial, and his mind was clouded with an unsettling sense of power that had awakened within him. The deeper he delved into the Obsidian Order, the more he realized just how far gone he was becoming.
But he couldn't stop. Not yet.
The darkness had a hold on him now, a gnawing hunger for power, for control. The thought of going back to his old life, the weak and insignificant brother, felt like a distant memory. The strength he had just tasted—his Kore—was a force unlike anything he had ever imagined.
"I'm not going back," he muttered to himself, his voice cold and resolute.
But even as he told himself that, something inside of him trembled at the thought. A nagging doubt. A voice—soft, almost imperceptible—whispered in his mind: Are you sure?
His phone buzzed, interrupting his thoughts. The screen lit up with a message from Ara:
"I'm coming for you. Don't do something you'll regret."
Jin-Woo's eyes darkened as he read the words. He didn't want her involvement in this, but he knew she wouldn't back down. She cared about him, despite everything, and that made her dangerous.
He quickly typed a reply: "Stay out of this."
But as he hit send, the weight of her concern hung over him. She didn't understand. No one did.

A Deadly Proposition
The next day, Jin-Woo was summoned back to the hidden station by the mysterious figure he had met before. There, in the shadows of the underground labyrinth, the figure awaited him, a cold smile tugging at the edges of their masked face.
"You passed the trial," the figure said, their voice smooth and eerie. "But you must prove yourself again. The true path to power lies deeper within."
Jin-Woo stood tall, his shadowy aura flickering ominously. "I've come this far. What's next?"
The figure's smile widened. "You seek to control your Kore. But that will only take you so far. To truly ascend, you must embrace the Abyss."
Jin-Woo raised an eyebrow. "The Abyss?"
"The Abyss is the heart of the Obsidian Order's power. Only those who truly understand the depths of their Kore can enter it. But beware," the figure continued, their voice lowering to a whisper. "It will test you in ways you cannot imagine. Only the strongest survive."
Jin-Woo didn't hesitate. "I'm ready."
The figure nodded slowly. "Very well. Follow me."
They led Jin-Woo deeper into the station, passing through a labyrinth of hallways that seemed to stretch on endlessly. The air grew colder, thicker, as they descended into the heart of the Obsidian Order's domain. Jin-Woo could feel the oppressive weight of the darkness around him, and his shadows recoiled at the unfamiliar energy.
Finally, they reached a large chamber. In the center was a swirling vortex of dark energy, the Abyss. It pulsed and writhed like a living creature, its power palpable in the air.
"This is it," the figure said. "Step into the Abyss, and your true potential will be unlocked. But remember, it doesn't come without cost."
Jin-Woo stared into the vortex, his heartbeat quickening. It beckoned to him, calling him to surrender, to embrace the darkness. He could already feel the power resonating within him, the promise of strength beyond anything he had ever imagined.
Without a second thought, he stepped forward.

Descent into Darkness
The moment Jin-Woo entered the Abyss, the world around him twisted. The air grew thick, suffocating, and the shadows that had once obeyed him seemed to turn against him, becoming a storm of chaotic, writhing tendrils. He was consumed by darkness, his senses disoriented as if he had been thrown into a different dimension altogether.
His shadows clawed at him, tearing at his skin, seeking to drown him in their endless void. He struggled, but every time he tried to regain control, the Abyss seemed to tighten its grip on him, forcing him to confront his deepest fears.
In the distance, he saw a figure—something more monstrous than human, its form shifting and undulating with each passing second. It was the manifestation of his own doubts, his own desires, the darker side of his Kore that he had been trying to suppress.
This is who you are, the figure whispered, its voice echoing in his mind. A killer. A monster. You are nothing more than a shadow of destruction.
Jin-Woo gritted his teeth, his fists trembling as he tried to summon his Kore to fight back. But the Abyss was relentless. It fed on his insecurities, his anger, and the darkness that had been festering inside him for so long.
"Shut up!" Jin-Woo shouted, his voice breaking through the noise in his mind. "I'm not like you. I'll never be like you."
His Kore surged around him, forming an impenetrable shield of darkness. With a primal roar, he pushed back against the Abyss, fighting to maintain his sense of self.
For a moment, the Abyss relented, and the figure in the distance flickered. Jin-Woo seized the opportunity, launching himself at it. His shadows coiled around the figure, crushing it into nothingness. The darkness screamed, but it was no match for Jin-Woo's will.
As the Abyss began to crumble, Jin-Woo stood victorious, his body trembling with exhaustion but alive with power. The chamber around him started to warp and dissolve, and he was pulled back to the real world.

The Price of Power
Jin-Woo stumbled back into the station, his body sore and covered in sweat. The figure was waiting for him, a satisfied look on their face.
"You've passed the trial," they said, their voice tinged with something darkly approving. "You've tasted the Abyss and survived. Now you are truly one of us."
Jin-Woo's breathing was heavy, his mind still reeling from the experience. "What now?"
The figure smiled. "Now, we begin the real work. The Obsidian Order's influence is vast, and there is much more to be done. But you are ready now. Ready to take your place among the strongest."
Jin-Woo nodded, his resolve hardening. "I'll do whatever it takes."
But as he stood there, facing the darkness he had embraced, a lingering question gnawed at him. Was he truly in control of his power? Or was the darkness slowly consuming him, just as it had threatened to do in the Abyss?

Ara's Plea
Back in the city, Ara stood outside a crowded cafe, her phone clenched tightly in her hand. She had tried to reach Jin-Woo, but his replies had become increasingly cold, distant. Every attempt to warn him, to pull him back from the brink, had been met with silence or defiance.
She couldn't let him go. Not like this.
"I have to stop him," Ara whispered to herself, determination in her eyes.
But she had no idea what Jin-Woo was truly capable of now, nor what kind of monster he had become in his pursuit of power.
And deep inside, she feared it was already too late.
