The battlefield simulation had fully shifted.
Ruins stretched endlessly across the horizon.
Broken towers leaned into a red sky that wasn't real—but felt real enough to bleed.
Rift Echoes surrounded them.
Dozens.
No—more.
They were multiplying.
Kyle Gale landed beside Zeal with a sharp wind burst, skidding across broken stone.
"Okay," Kyle said, slightly out of breath. "This is officially unfair."
Chloe Ashfield stood a few meters away, smoke swirling tighter around her arms now.
Her eyes narrowed.
"They're not spawning randomly," she said. "They're converging."
Lucius Lockwood stepped forward calmly, lightning flickering across his hand like it had a mind of its own.
"…On him," Lucius finished.
Silence.
Kyle blinked.
"…On Zeal?"
Zeal didn't respond immediately.
Because he already felt it.
Every Echo in the battlefield was facing him.
Not attacking randomly.
Not reacting to everyone.
Targeting.
Like he was a signal.
Or a beacon.
A broken memory they all recognized.
One of the Echoes stepped forward.
Its body distorted, shifting like unstable smoke wrapped in bone fragments.
Then it spoke.
"Prototype vessel confirmed."
Kyle immediately turned.
"…Okay, I'm really tired of that word."
Zeal finally spoke quietly.
"Stop calling me that."
The Echo tilted its head.
Then more voices responded across the battlefield.
"Signal resonance increasing."
"Calamity marker detected."
"False Monarch trace confirmed."
Chloe's expression tightened.
"This isn't a normal simulation," she said. "It's reacting to him specifically."
Lucius glanced at Zeal.
"…No," he said slowly. "It's remembering him."
That statement made the air colder.
Kyle frowned.
"…Remembering what exactly?"
No one answered.
Because the Echoes moved again.
All at once.
A wave of distorted bodies surged forward like a collapsing tide.
Kyle reacted instantly.
"Wind Barrier!"
A spiral of wind exploded outward, knocking several Echoes back.
Chloe raised her hand.
"Smoke Dominion."
Black smoke expanded rapidly, swallowing sections of the battlefield and disorienting incoming attacks.
Lucius didn't wait.
"Lightning Step."
He vanished in a burst of electricity, reappearing mid-air and striking down three Echoes instantly.
BOOM—CRACK—BOOM.
But Zeal—
didn't move.
Not yet.
Because something inside him was responding.
The black pulse.
Not on his body.
Inside it.
THUMP.
Faster now.
Like something was waking up because it recognized this place.
Zeal exhaled slowly.
"…So this is what they meant."
Kyle shouted from the side.
"Hey! Philosophical moment later, surviving now!"
An Echo lunged toward Zeal.
Fast.
Closer than the others.
Zeal lifted his hand instinctively.
And something changed.
Black markings spread from his wrist upward like cracks in reality itself.
His fingers hardened.
Claws forming partially—not fully transformed, but unstable.
BOOM.
He struck.
The Echo was thrown backward violently, crashing into a ruined wall.
But it didn't disappear.
It reformed.
Kyle's eyes widened slightly.
"…Yeah, that's new."
Chloe's smoke tightened.
"…He's adapting."
Lucius narrowed his eyes.
"No," he said. "He's responding."
Zeal looked at his hand.
The markings were glowing faintly.
Not burning.
Not painful.
Alive.
Another Echo approached.
Then another.
And another.
All converging again.
Zeal's breathing slowed.
Not fear.
Focus.
Something inside him whispered again.
Not a voice.
A pressure.
A memory that wasn't his.
"If they cannot define you… then you are already beyond them."
Zeal blinked slightly.
"…What?"
The Echoes attacked again.
All at once.
Kyle shouted.
"ZEAL—!"
But Zeal moved first.
Not fast.
Not chaotic.
Controlled.
For the first time since entering the academy—
his body stopped resisting itself.
BOOM.
He stepped forward.
The ground cracked slightly beneath him.
Black energy pulsed outward in a thin wave.
Not explosion.
Not aura blast.
Pressure.
The Echoes stopped mid-charge.
Just for a fraction of a second.
That was enough.
Lucius noticed immediately.
"…That pressure."
Chloe's smoke flickered.
"…It's not mana."
Kyle swallowed slightly.
"What is it then?"
Lucius answered without looking away.
"…Something older."
Zeal raised his hand slowly.
The markings spread further up his arm.
His voice came out quieter than before.
"I don't know what I am."
A pause.
"But I know this is mine."
The black pulse inside him responded violently.
THUMP—THUMP—THUMP.
The Echoes moved again.
Faster this time.
Zeal didn't retreat.
He stepped forward.
And for the first time—
he accepted it.
BOOM.
A wave of black pressure exploded outward.
Not destructive.
Dominating.
The Echoes froze.
Their movements slowed.
Distorted.
Like reality itself was hesitating to continue their existence.
Kyle blinked.
"…Okay. That's definitely not fair."
Chloe's eyes narrowed.
"…Domain influence?"
Lucius stared directly at Zeal now.
"No," he said quietly.
"That's instinct."
Zeal moved.
One step.
Then another.
Each step carried pressure that wasn't physical.
The Echoes began collapsing under it.
Not dying.
Losing structure.
Like they were forgetting how to exist properly.
Kyle watched in disbelief.
"Okay… I take it back," he muttered. "This is VERY unfair."
Then—
a deeper sound echoed through the simulation.
Not from the battlefield.
From beneath it.
A rumble.
Like something enormous turning its head.
Zeal froze slightly.
His markings reacted instantly.
The black pulse surged violently.
Chloe noticed immediately.
"…Something reacted to him again."
Lucius narrowed his eyes.
"…Outside the simulation."
Kyle looked around nervously.
"Please tell me I'm imagining that."
Zeal whispered quietly.
"…It's under us."
And at that moment—
the entire simulation cracked slightly.
Like reality itself had just blinked.
