Chapter 17 - chapter 15-the boy inside the ruin

The Black Archive collapsed around them.

Stone crashed from the ceiling.

Ancient shelves shattered apart.

Dust and black smoke filled the air while the entire tower groaned like it was being torn apart from the inside.

Kyle barely dodged a falling chunk of stone.

"WHY IS THIS SCHOOL ALWAYS EXPLODING?!"

Nobody answered him.

Because at the center of the collapsing archive—

Zeal Greyhound stood frozen.

And the gigantic creature beneath the floor was bowing to him.

Not attacking.

Not threatening.

Bowing.

The claw remained lowered beneath the broken ground while black chains wrapped around it tightly, glowing with ancient golden runes.

Seals.

Thousands of them.

And every single one was weakening.

The hooded figure stayed kneeling too.

Its golden eyes never left Zeal.

Like everything in that room had already accepted him as their ruler.

That terrified Lucius more than the creature itself.

Lightning sparked violently around his body.

Not from fear.

Instinct.

His authority reacted whenever Zeal's pressure surged now.

Like the world itself was warning him.

Zeal barely noticed any of them anymore.

The voice inside his head had returned.

Not the creature's.

Not the hooded figure's.

His own.

Cold.

Ancient.

You remember now.

"No," Zeal muttered quietly.

His breathing grew uneven.

"I don't."

Another pulse exploded from his chest.

THUMP.

The room shook violently.

The dragon silhouette behind him became clearer for a split second.

Huge wings.

Golden eyes.

A crown-like shape above its head.

Kyle stared at it in horror.

"…That thing is getting less imaginary every minute."

Chloe stepped closer carefully.

Smoke curled around her body protectively while she kept the black-scaled book clutched tightly in her hand.

"Zeal."

No response.

"Zeal, look at me."

Slowly—

his golden eye shifted toward her.

And for a moment—

Chloe froze.

Because that wasn't Zeal's gaze.

It looked older.

Empty.

Like someone staring across centuries instead of seconds.

Then he blinked.

And Zeal returned.

Barely.

"…I can hear them."

Lucius frowned.

"Hear who?"

Zeal grabbed his head.

"…Everything."

The pressure exploded again.

BOOOOOOM.

The remaining chains across the archive chamber snapped apart.

The gigantic eye beneath the floor widened instantly.

The creature was waking faster now.

The hooded figure finally rose slowly to its feet.

"The prison cannot survive another awakening."

Lucius immediately stepped forward.

"Then shut it down."

The hooded figure looked at him for the first time.

And somehow—

despite having no visible face—

its disappointment was obvious.

"You cannot stop eternity with lightning, child."

Lucius' lightning surged harder.

"…Want to test that?"

Kyle pointed between them.

"Can we MAYBE not start another fight next to the ancient dragon prison?!"

A massive tremor interrupted everyone.

The floor beneath the archive cracked wider.

And this time—

something else appeared.

A second claw.

Larger than the first.

Black-gold scales scraped against the broken stone while ancient chains dragged behind it from the darkness below.

The creature wasn't alone.

Chloe's expression changed instantly.

"…There's more than one."

That sentence hit harder than anything else so far.

Because everyone had assumed the thing below the academy was a single monster.

But now—

more golden eyes were opening beneath the darkness.

Watching.

Waiting.

The hooded figure spoke quietly.

"The Monarch's Legion still remembers."

Zeal's chest tightened violently.

More visions crashed through his mind.

An endless battlefield.

Towering dragons covered in chains.

Armies kneeling beneath black banners.

And himself—

walking through fire while the world burned around him.

Not smiling.

Not raging.

Just watching.

Like destruction was normal.

Like it belonged to him.

Zeal staggered backward.

"…Stop…"

But the visions kept coming.

A woman crying beneath falling ash.

A kingdom collapsing into darkness.

A voice screaming one final sentence before the world shattered.

"Seal the Monarch before the world ends!"

Zeal dropped to one knee.

The pulse inside him became unbearable.

Kyle immediately moved toward him.

"ZEAL!"

But before he could reach him—

black pressure exploded outward.

BOOOOOOOOM.

Kyle was thrown backward.

Lucius planted his feet instantly as lightning erupted around him to block the shockwave.

Chloe's smoke shield shattered instantly.

Even the hooded figure stepped back.

Zeal slowly lifted his head.

And for the first time—

both of his eyes glowed gold.

Silence filled the chamber.

The creature beneath the archive lowered itself even further.

The second creature did the same.

Then—

all the eyes in the darkness bowed together.

Dozens of ancient beings.

Kneeling.

Lucius stared silently.

Because now he understood something terrifying.

Zeal wasn't controlling monsters.

These creatures already belonged to him.

The realization sent cold tension through the entire room.

Zeal slowly stood.

The scales had spread farther now, covering parts of his face and neck completely.

Yet his voice sounded calm.

Too calm.

"…How long was I asleep?"

Kyle froze.

Chloe's eyes widened slightly.

Lucius immediately realized—

that wasn't Zeal talking again.

The hooded figure lowered itself once more.

"Since the fall of the First Age, my king."

The tower shook violently again.

Outside—

the academy barriers shattered across the sky.

CRAAAAACK.

Red emergency sigils disappeared one after another.

Students across the academy screamed as black clouds gathered directly above the western district.

Instructor Vael looked upward in horror.

"…No…"

Mana cannons along the academy walls activated instantly.

Military-level defensive formations ignited throughout the campus.

Because the academy finally understood the truth.

This was no longer a containment failure.

This was an awakening.

Back inside the archive—

Lucius stepped forward again.

Lightning exploded around him brighter than ever before.

"If that thing inside him fully wakes up," he said coldly, "everyone dies."

Chloe immediately glared at him.

"You think attacking him helps?!"

"I'm not attacking him."

Lucius' eyes never left Zeal.

"I'm stopping whatever's taking him over."

Kyle slowly stood again, bruised and exhausted.

"…Can somebody ask the giant ancient dragon things for a timeout?"

Nobody listened.

Because Zeal had started walking toward the broken floor.

Toward the creatures below.

Toward the darkness.

The hooded figure moved aside instantly to let him pass.

Like a servant opening a throne room door.

The creatures beneath the archive growled softly.

Not threatening.

Welcoming.

Zeal stopped at the edge of the abyss.

And deep below—

something enormous finally opened its eyes completely.

Not gold this time.

Black.

The entire academy shook.

Every creature beneath the archive bowed instantly.

Even the hooded figure lowered itself completely to the floor.

Fear crawled down Lucius' spine for the first time in years.

Because the presence below the archive—

was infinitely worse than the others.

Then the ancient voice echoed upward through the darkness.

Slow.

Heavy.

Powerful enough to shake reality itself.

"So… you finally returned."

Zeal's golden eyes widened slightly.

Because somehow—

he recognized that voice.

And far away beyond the academy walls—

inside the capital of Astravia—

a man dressed in white military armor slowly opened his eyes.

Then smiled.

"…The Monarch woke up."
